40 Trainee Civil Judges Visit FSL Srinagar for Forensic Science Exposure

SRINAGAR, JULY 31: A group of 40 trainee Civil Judges, along with the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Srinagar, visited the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Srinagar today. This visit was part of an exposure programme designed to deepen their understanding of forensic science’s role in the criminal justice system.

The programme kicked off with an introductory presentation by Sheikh Suhail Ahmad, a Scientific Officer in the Fingerprints Division. He provided an overview of the FSL’s mandate, organizational structure, and scientific capabilities. The presentation highlighted FSL Srinagar’s crucial role in supporting investigating agencies and the judiciary through the scientific examination of evidence.

After the presentation, the participants embarked on a guided tour of the laboratory, led by Dr. Rais Ahmad, a Scientific Officer in the Narcotics & Chemical Division, and Sheikh Suhail Ahmad. During the tour, the trainee judges engaged with experts across various forensic disciplines. They learned about the operations of different divisions, modern analytical techniques, and quality assurance practices, as well as the scientific procedures involved in examining forensic exhibits.

Later, Dr. Qazi Danish Mushtaq, the Deputy Director of JKFSL Srinagar, spoke with the visiting judicial officers about the operations of the District Mobile Forensic Units (DMFUs). He emphasized the essential role these mobile units play in providing immediate scientific assistance at crime scenes. They ensure proper collection, preservation, and documentation of physical evidence, facilitating timely forensic support for investigating agencies throughout the Union Territory.

This exposure programme offered the trainee judges valuable insights into the practical applications of forensic science in criminal investigations and judicial proceedings. The participants actively engaged with forensic experts, discussing the evidentiary value of scientific findings and the importance of forensic reports in promoting fair and effective justice.

Speaking during the visit, Dr. Mushtaq stated, “The criminal justice system increasingly relies on scientific evidence. Such exposure visits enhance judicial officers’ understanding of forensic processes and foster closer cooperation between the judiciary and forensic experts, which is vital for delivering justice effectively.” Sheikh Suhail Ahmad further noted, “The programme aims to familiarize judicial officers with modern forensic science capabilities and provide firsthand exposure to the scientific procedures used in the laboratory.”

The visiting officers expressed their appreciation for the state-of-the-art facilities and professional expertise at FSL Srinagar, describing the interaction as highly informative and beneficial. The programme wrapped up with a strong reaffirmation of the need for ongoing collaboration between the judiciary and forensic institutions to strengthen the criminal justice system.
