Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, serving as the Chairman of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB), has sanctioned ₹30.14 crore for direct online transfer to eligible beneficiaries under various welfare schemes. This announcement comes amid deep sadness over a tragic bus accident involving Indian pilgrims in Saudi Arabia.
Officials confirmed that the sanctioned amount will be allocated to all Assistant Labour Commissioners who will facilitate the immediate transfer into the bank accounts of registered construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This swift action seeks to support those in need through various beneficial schemes.
The Labour Department identified the assistance as part of flagship welfare initiatives. The schemes include:
- Education support for workers’ children
- Disability assistance
- Aid for chronic illness
- Support for the next of kin of deceased workers
- Marriage assistance
- Meritorious awards for children of registered workers
During the 22nd meeting of JKBOCWWB held in July, Chief Minister Abdullah underscored the importance of redefining ‘construction worker’ to ensure broader inclusivity. He aimed to guarantee that all vulnerable labourers in the unorganised sector can access welfare measures targeted for them.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Abdullah stated his intention to explore innovative policy mechanisms. “We aim to expand coverage, ensure financial security for workers, and align our operations with national best practices in labour welfare,” he mentioned.
He emphasized the critical role of construction workers in the infrastructure sector, saying, “Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support.” This statement reaffirms his government’s promise to protect labour rights and dignity.
CM Expresses Grief Over Bus Accident in Saudi Arabia
In a separate yet deeply related context, the Chief Minister expressed profound sorrow regarding a tragic bus accident in Medina, Saudi Arabia, early this morning. This incident involved a bus carrying Indian Umrah pilgrims and resulted in heartbreaking casualties.
He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and extended prayers for the swift recovery of the injured passengers. Initial reports indicate that the bus, transporting 46 Indian pilgrims, collided with a tanker while en route from Mecca to Medina. Tragically, this accident led to the loss of 45 lives, leaving only one survivor with serious injuries.
The Chief Minister’s empathetic response highlights not only the government’s commitment to welfare and support for construction workers but also its compassion for those affected by bereavement and tragedy.
