Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary: Women expected to join Bharat Jodo Yatra in large numbers

0

SHEGOAN: The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi continued on the 13th day of its Maharashtra leg on Saturday, and women are expected to join the foot march in large numbers during the day on the occasion of former prime minister Indira Gandhi’s birth anniversary.

The participants of the yatra embarked on the day’s journey at 6 am from Gajanan Dada Patil Marketyard at Shegaon in Buldhana district and proceeded to Jalamb.

The foot march will pass through Bhastan and take a night halt at Jalgaon Jamod town in the district.

Women from Self-help groups (SHGs) and women elected representatives will join the yatra to mark the birth anniversary of late PM Indira Gandhi, the party said.

Along the route, Gandhi interacted with local residents as they walked along with him. The yatra will enter Madhya Pradesh at Burhanpur on Sunday night.

The foot march reached Maharashtra on November 7 from Telangana and covered Nanded, Hingoli, Washim, Akola and Buldhana districts, covering 15 assembly and six parliamentary constituencies.

It will cover 382 km in 14 days.

Gandhi addressed two public rallies in the Maharashtra leg – first in Nanded on November 10 and the second one at Shegaon on Friday.

Why BCCI sacked Chetan Sharma selection committee

0

The BCCI on Friday sacked the entire four-member senior national selection committee led by Chetan Sharma after the Indian cricket team failed to reach the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
On Friday, the BCCI invited applications for the position of national selectors (Senior Men). The last date of application is November 28.

That Chetan will be sacked was first reported by PTI on October 18 after the BCCI AGM but it is learnt that his committee has not even been told about the sacking.

The new chairman’s job mandate has an interesting description of “selecting captain in each format” which suggests that BCCI might be moving towards split captaincy in near future.

Chetan (North zone), Harvinder Singh (Centra Zone), Sunil Joshi (South Zone) and Debasish Mohanty (East Zone) have had the shortest stint as senior national selectors in recent times.

Joshi and Harvinder were appointed national selectors in February 2020. After the AGM in January 2021, Chetan took over as chairman of selectors with Mohanty and Kuruvilla joining him.

A senior national selector normally gets a four-year term subject to extension. There was no selector from West Zone after Abbey Kuruvilla’s tenure ended.

Once India lost in the semifinal of the T20 World Cup, the writing was always on the wall that Chetan was on borrowed time.

During Chetan’s tenure, India had also failed to reach knockout stage in the 2021 edition of T20 World Cup and lost the World Test Championships final.

For Chetan to save his job, India needed to win the T20 World Cup. Nothing less could have saved him. But once, he was asked to select four squads at one go (New Zealand and Bangladesh away series) which was unprecedented, one could read between the lines, a BCCI insider, who has been tracking the developments, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

There are multiple reasons that the BCCI mandarins were unhappy with Chetan and his committee’s shoddy performance.

It is believed that Chetan was never assertive when it came to certain decisions.

Some of the reasons believed to have led to his sacking are: not being able to have a settled squad, allowing eight international captains in just one year with some select seniors turning workload management into a joke, picking KL Rahul after a eight month hiatus from T20 cricket, going on almost each and every India tour but not being able to create a decisive set of players in co-ordination with team management.

No tangible plan as to whether a 37-year-old senior like Shikhar Dhawan would be carried to 2023 World Cup when he would be above 38 is among the issues that has never been addressed.

Chetan and his team could never reward the domestic or IPL performers and pick specialists across two T20 World Cups. Theirs is a committee under whom India have lost two T20 World Cup games by 10 wickets, something that has never happened earlier.

That Chetan’s days were numbered was understood when he cut a lonely figure during the T20 World Cup in Australia. He never travelled with the team and would stand at a fair distance from head coach Rahul Dravid at the end of bowlers’ run-up at the nets.

The media in Australia never witnessed any major conversation between the duo.

NIA chargesheet against 5 TRF operatives in arms recovery case

New Delhi, November :

The NIA has filed a chargesheet against five members of The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the banded terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba, in a Jammu special court in a case related to the seizure of arms in Srinagar’s Chanapora locality in May.

Aamir Mushtaq Ganie, Adnan Ahsan Wani, Ashaiq Hussain Hajam and Ghulam Mohideen Dar and Faisal Munir have been named in the chargesheet, said the agency.

The chargesheet has been filed under various Sections of the IPC, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act. The NIA said the case was initially registered on May 23 at the Chanapora police station in Srinagar following the seizure of 15 pistols, 30 magazines and 300 rounds. The agency re-registered the case on June 18.

“Investigations have revealed that the five accused are cadres of the TRF who conspired to supply the consignments of arms, ammunition and funds to terrorists of the TRF/LeT to carry out target killings in Jammu and Kashmir, thereby creating terror among people,” an NIA spokesperson said in the statement.

The NIA said investigation had also revealed that the accused persons used to receive these arms consignments from Pakistan.

“It has been found that the accused are associated with their Pakistan-based handlers/operative/commanders of the TRF/LeT, and radicalised, motivated and instigated vulnerable youth to join terror groups in Kashmir,” an NIA official said.

He said the seizure of incriminating material related to arms and ammunitions, chats about terror funds, besides other material from the mobile phones of the accused persons, has established that they were engaged in terror activities for a long time and threatened the security, integrity and sovereignty of India.

PM Modi to inaugurate Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar today

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh ‘Donyi Polo Airport’ at Hollangi in Itanagar on Saturday, said officials.

In 2019, PM laid the foundation stone for the construction of Greenfield Airport at Hollongi and inaugurated retrofitted Tezu airport. The terminal at Hollongi has been constructed at a cost of approximately Rs. 955 crores with an area of 4100 sq m and has a peak handling capacity of 200 passengers per hour.

The airport, which is said to be the first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh, has been developed in an area of over 690 acres, at a cost of more than Rs 640 crore. With a 2,300 m runway, the airport is perfect for all weather day operations.

“The airport terminal is a modern building, which promotes energy efficiency, renewable energy and the recycling of resources.Donyi Polo Airport will be the third operational airport for Arunachal Pradesh, taking the total airport count in the North-East region to 16. From 1947 to 2014, only nine airports were built in the North-East. In a short span of eight years since then, the Modi government has built seven airports in the North-East,” announced an official statement.

Airports in five northeastern states, namely, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have seen flights take off for the first time in 75 years.

“Aircraft movement in the North-East has also witnessed an increase of 113 per cent since 2014, from 852 per week in 2014 to 1817 per week in 2022,” pointed out the statement.

The name of the airport reflects the traditions and rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh and its age-old indigenous reverence to the Sun (‘Donyi’) and the Moon (‘Polo’).
