State Cancer Institute Honoured in J&K Government Calendar, Medical Fraternity Hails Recognition

Jammu: In a moment of immense pride for the medical community of Jammu and Kashmir, the Government of Jammu and Kashmir has formally recognised the significant advancements made in the healthcare sector by the Department of Health and Medical Education. The recognition comes with the inclusion of the State Cancer Institute in the official government calendar, marking its growing importance in the region’s medical landscape.

The State Cancer Institute has emerged as a symbol of progress and commitment in the fight against cancer, offering advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities to patients from across Jammu and Kashmir and neighbouring areas. Over the past few years, the institute has witnessed steady infrastructural growth, adoption of modern medical technologies, and strengthening of specialised oncology services, significantly reducing the need for patients to seek treatment outside the Union Territory.

Medical professionals and healthcare administrators have welcomed the government’s acknowledgment, describing it as a morale booster for doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and all those involved in strengthening public healthcare delivery. The recognition reflects the government’s focus on upgrading tertiary healthcare institutions and ensuring accessible, quality cancer care for the people.

Calling the State Cancer Institute the pride of Jammu and Kashmir, senior officials reiterated their resolve to further enhance its standards. “This recognition motivates us to work with greater dedication. Our collective effort will be to transform the State Cancer Institute into one of the finest centres for cancer care in the country,” an official statement noted.

The inclusion of the institute in the official calendar is being seen not merely as a symbolic gesture, but as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to healthcare reforms and excellence in medical education and services. It also highlights the growing confidence in locally developed medical infrastructure, reinforcing hope for a healthier future for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah Launches e-Pathshala Initiative to Boost Digital Learning in J&K

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday launched the e-Pathshala initiative of the School Education Department, emphasising that digital platforms are intended to supplement classroom teaching and help bridge learning gaps, not replace teachers.

The e-Pathshala channel will be available on DTH Channel 53, enabling home-based learning across the Union Territory. On the occasion, the Chief Minister also inaugurated new hostel buildings and other development projects under the Samagra Shiksha scheme.

Addressing the gathering, Abdullah said the initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort to expand digital learning resources, with a long-term vision of providing a dedicated channel for each class.

“This is just a small step. Our intention should be that every class has its own channel. Gradually, we will expand these channels, and there will be a separate channel for each class,” he said.

He clarified that the introduction of e-classrooms and digital channels should not be seen as an attempt to reduce the role of teachers.

“Whether connectivity exists or not, physical teachers cannot be replaced, and we have no intention of replacing them. The relationship between a teacher and a student cannot be substituted by any device or technology,” Abdullah said.

Highlighting the transformative role of good teachers, the Chief Minister shared a personal anecdote from his student days to underline how effective teaching can help even weak students excel.

“A good teacher can take even the weakest students to great heights,” he remarked.

Recalling his school days, Abdullah said he had little interest in science as a child and was expected to struggle in physics and chemistry. He credited teacher Sat Lal Razdan for changing that perception through dedicated guidance and discipline, adding that he scored his highest marks in science under Razdan’s mentorship.

Congratulating the education department and all stakeholders, Abdullah said the e-Pathshala initiative, if used effectively, has the potential to transform the lives of children across the Union Territory. He also called for regular feedback from students and teachers to ensure that the content remains relevant and beneficial.

The Chief Minister noted that 14 out of the 20 districts in Jammu and Kashmir have been made education-literate, while the remaining districts—mostly remote areas—stand to benefit significantly from the new digital channel.

On the use of mobile phones and screens, Abdullah stressed that technology should be used constructively for education, learning and mental development, while cautioning against excessive screen time for gaming. He also emphasised the importance of cultivating reading habits among children, encouraging them to read books, magazines and newspapers in addition to textbooks.

Supreme Court Defers Hearing on Pleas Challenging Electoral Roll Revision to January 13

0

The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred to January 13 the final hearing on a batch of petitions challenging the Election Commission’s decision to carry out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in several states, including Bihar.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, which had listed the matter for hearing during the day, said the proceedings would resume on Tuesday. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing on behalf of the Election Commission, is expected to continue advancing his arguments.

Earlier, on January 6, the Election Commission told the bench that it has the constitutional power and competence to undertake a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The poll panel also asserted that it has a constitutional duty to ensure that no foreign nationals are enrolled as voters.

The petitions challenge the Election Commission’s decision to undertake the SIR exercise in multiple states, including Bihar, and raise important constitutional questions relating to the scope of the Commission’s powers, issues of citizenship, and the right to vote.

The court will hear further arguments in the matter on January 13.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the Somnath Swabhiman Parv is an occasion to remember the countless sons and daughters of Bharat Mata who never compromised with their principles and cultural ethos, despite facing the most challenging times.

The year-long Somnath Swabhiman Parv commemorates the resilience of Indian civilisation, symbolised by the repeated rebuilding of the Somnath temple at Veraval in Gujarat after it was ravaged multiple times by foreign invaders.

“Jai Somnath! Somnath Swabhiman Parv begins today. A thousand years ago, in January 1026, Somnath faced its first-ever attack. The attack of 1026 and the subsequent attacks couldn’t diminish the eternal faith of millions, nor break the civilisational spirit that rebuilt Somnath time and again,” the Prime Minister said in a post on X.

Mr Modi is scheduled to participate in the Somnath Swabhiman Parv celebrations at the historic temple on January 11. He also shared photographs from his previous visits to Somnath and encouraged people to post their pictures using the hashtag #SomnathSwabhimanParv.

“Somnath Swabhiman Parv is about remembering the countless children of Bharat Mata, who never compromised with their principles and ethos. However daunting the times were, their resolve remained unshaken and their commitment to our ethos unwavering,” he said.

The Prime Minister also shared glimpses from a programme held at Somnath on October 31, 2001, which marked 50 years since the rebuilt temple was inaugurated in 1951 in the presence of then President Rajendra Prasad.

Recalling the reconstruction of the temple, Mr Modi said the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, K M Munshi and several others were noteworthy. He noted that the 2001 programme was attended by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home Minister L K Advani and several other dignitaries.

“In 2026, we will mark 75 years since the grand ceremony of 1951,” the Prime Minister added.

Several places, including Srinagar, experienced the coldest night of the season as cold conditions tightened grip in Kashmir with a significant fall in the minimum temperature in most parts, officials said on Thursday.

The bone-chilling cold conditions led to the freezing of the fringes of several water bodies, including the famous Dal Lake here.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, down 3.5 degrees from minus 1.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday night, they said.

The officials said it was the season’s coldest night in the city so far this season, and the minimum temperature was 3.2 degrees below the season’s normal.

The tourist resort of Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district was the coldest recorded place in Jammu and Kashmir as it shivered at a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, they said.

The night temperature in Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district settled at a low of minus 9.2 degrees Celsius, down from minus 7.6 degrees Celsius, they said.

It was the lowest night temperature at the resort so far this winter, they added.

In south Kashmir’s tourist resort of Pahalgam, the minimum settled at a low of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius, down from minus 7.2 degrees Celsius the previous night, the officials said, adding, the Wednesday night was the season’s coldest in the resort.

The minimum in Qazigund, the gateway town of the valley, went down by over five degrees to record a minimum of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius, the season’s coldest, the officials said.

Kokernag recorded a low of minus 3 degrees Celsius and Kupwara minus 5.1 degrees Celsius, they added.

Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, a 40-day period of extreme cold, during which night temperatures often drop several degrees below the freezing point and chances of snowfall are the highest.

‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, which began on December 21 last year, ends on January 30.

The plains of the valley have not received any snowfall so far this season.

The India Meteorological Department has said the weather is likely to remain dry but cloudy till January 20.

It said the night temperatures would witness a significant fall in the valley till January 10. (Agencies)

Rahul Gandhi Targets Centre Over Trump Remarks, Cites Indira Gandhi’s 1971 Stand

Against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tariffs on India, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took a swipe at the central government, invoking former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s leadership during the 1971 war.

Gandhi shared an old video of himself on social media platform X, in which he had contrasted Prime Minister Modi’s approach to the United States with that of Indira Gandhi, claiming she had stood firm despite pressure from Washington during the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Accompanying the post, Gandhi wrote, “Farq samjho, sir ji!” (Understand the difference, sir).

Trump, speaking on Tuesday at the House GOP Member Retreat, said that Prime Minister Modi was “not that happy” with him due to tariffs imposed by the US on India over its purchases of Russian oil. He also claimed that Modi had personally sought a meeting with him.

“I have a very good relationship with him. He’s not that happy with me because they’re paying a lot of tariffs now… but they have reduced it very substantially from Russia,” Trump said.

In the video shared by Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader alleged that Prime Minister Modi had “surrendered” following a phone call from Trump during a past India-Pakistan military standoff. He contrasted this with Indira Gandhi’s response in 1971, when, according to him, she did not relent despite the US sending its Seventh Fleet to the region. “This is the difference,” Gandhi had said in the video.

Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh also criticised the prime minister, sharing a clip of Trump’s remarks. “From Namaste Trump to Howdy Modi to Donald bhai and now this. What next?” Ramesh posted on X.

Trump has imposed tariffs of up to 50 per cent on India, including a 25 per cent levy linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil. He also claimed that India had been waiting for five years for Apache helicopters and said the US was now expediting the process. “India ordered 68 Apaches,” Trump said.

Earlier this week, the Congress had criticised the government over Trump’s comments that Washington could raise tariffs on India “very quickly”, stating that events such as “Namaste Trump” and “Howdy Modi” and public displays of camaraderie with the US president had yielded little benefit for India.

The ruling BJP has not yet responded to the latest remarks by Congress leaders.

BJP Attacks Congress, Alleges Nehru Opposed Reconstruction of Somnath Temple

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday launched a fresh attack on the Congress, alleging that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru opposed the reconstruction of the Somnath temple after Independence due to what it described as “appeasement politics”.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, BJP national spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi alleged that while the Somnath temple was plundered by invaders such as Mahmud of Ghazni and Alauddin Khilji in the past, it faced opposition in independent India from Prime Minister Nehru.

Trivedi claimed that Nehru did not support the rebuilding of the Somnath temple and instead prioritised what the BJP termed as “external appeasement” over preserving India’s civilisational and cultural heritage. He further alleged that Nehru glorified Mughal invaders and downplayed historic Hindu symbols.

The BJP leader cited a letter allegedly written by Nehru to Pakistan’s then Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan on April 21, 1951, as evidence. According to Trivedi, Nehru addressed Khan as “Dear Nawabzada” and described reports about the reconstruction of the Somnath temple as “completely false”.

“Somnath was plundered by Mahmud Ghazni and Khilji in the past, but in independent India, Pandit Nehru harboured the greatest hatred towards Lord Somnath,” Trivedi said in his post.

He alleged that by writing to Liaquat Ali Khan, Nehru attempted to reassure Pakistan that no such reconstruction was taking place. “Pandit Nehru, in a way, surrendered to Liaquat Ali Khan by stating that nothing like the reconstruction of the Somnath temple was happening,” Trivedi claimed.

Questioning Nehru’s intent, Trivedi asked what compelled the then Prime Minister to write to the Pakistani leadership on the issue. “What exactly was Pandit Nehru’s fear from Liaquat Ali Khan that he felt the need to write him a letter about the Somnath temple?” he said, alleging that it reflected “blind appeasement politics”.

The Congress party has not yet responded to the BJP’s allegations.

Light Snowfall in Higher Reaches Brings Sharp Temperature Drop Across Jammu and Kashmir

Light snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir and parts of the Jammu region has led to a significant drop in temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Tuesday.

Under the influence of a feeble western disturbance, light snowfall was recorded in several high-altitude areas, including Mughal Road, Sinthan Top, Pir Panjal hills of south Kashmir, and upper reaches of Ganderbal district. Several inches of snow have accumulated in some of these areas, while snowfall continued in parts of the Pir Panjal range late Tuesday evening.

An official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said there is a possibility of light snowfall over isolated higher reaches of north, south, and central Kashmir during the day. “After that, the weather is likely to remain dry but cloudy till January 20,” the official said, adding that temperatures are expected to fall further till January 10, followed by a rise of 1–2 degrees Celsius.

Gulmarg, the famous ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, recorded the coldest night temperature in the region at minus 8.6 degrees Celsius. Srinagar registered a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the previous night’s minus 3.6 degrees Celsius.

Other minimum temperatures recorded across the Valley included minus 6.8 degrees Celsius at Pahalgam, minus 3 degrees Celsius at Qazigund, minus 2 degrees Celsius at Kokernag, and minus 3.1 degrees Celsius at Kupwara.

Despite the cold nights, day temperatures remained above the freezing point. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, Qazigund 8.6 degrees, Pahalgam 5.6 degrees, Kupwara 11 degrees, Kokernag 5.8 degrees, and Gulmarg 1.6 degrees Celsius.

In the winter capital Jammu, night temperatures witnessed a sharp fall, with the minimum dropping to 5.2 degrees Celsius from 8.7 degrees Celsius recorded on Monday. The maximum temperature stood at 15.4 degrees Celsius, about 2.6 degrees below the normal for the day.

Katra recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 17.6 degrees. Bhaderwah registered a low of minus 2.2 degrees and a high of 10.5 degrees Celsius, while Banihal recorded a minimum of 1.5 degrees and a maximum of 10.9 degrees Celsius. Batote registered temperatures between 1.7 and 10.4 degrees Celsius.

Other areas of the Jammu region also witnessed low night temperatures, with Rajouri recording 0 degrees Celsius, Poonch 2.3 degrees, Doda 3.1 degrees, Kishtwar 2.2 degrees, Ramban 2.7 degrees, and Udhampur 4.5 degrees Celsius.

Jammu and adjoining plains remained under fog conditions, though sunshine during the day improved visibility after 11 a.m. Flight operations at Jammu Airport improved compared to the previous day, with only four flights arriving late, while all scheduled flights operated. Train services also showed improvement due to moderate fog conditions in the northern region.

The Kashmir Valley is currently experiencing Chilla-e-Kalan, the 40-day harshest phase of winter marked by extreme cold and frequent snowfall. However, the plains of the Valley have yet to receive any snowfall so far this season.
