Govt Has No Role in India-Pak Track-II Dialogues, Says Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Monday clarified that the Government of India has no involvement in Track-II discussions on India-Pakistan relations involving retired diplomats, military officials or members of civil society, stating that such participants attend in their personal capacities and do not represent the official position of the government.

Misri made the remarks while responding to media queries during his visit to Victoria in Seychelles, following reports that retired Indian and Pakistani diplomats, military officers and politicians participated in Track-II discussions on the sidelines of a regional security conference held in Colombo last week.

“Dozens of these kinds of events take place in dozens of places around the world on a whole variety of subjects. There is nothing new or special about these events,” Misri said.

Describing them as private initiatives, the Foreign Secretary said the meetings are organised by private entities and have no official backing from the Government of India.

“As far as we are concerned, these are private events organised by private parties. There is nothing official about them,” he said.

Misri stressed that retired officials or civil society members attending such interactions express only their personal views.

“It should be obvious that anybody from India who is participating in these events, whether they are retired diplomats, retired military officials or members of civil society, speaks for themselves and represents only their own point of view,” he said.

He reiterated that the Government of India neither participates in nor extends any official support to such engagements.

“As far as the Government of India is concerned, there is no official participation, no official support or involvement in these visits,” Misri said.

The Foreign Secretary further asserted that New Delhi does not attach any official significance to such discussions.

“They do not in any way represent the view of the Government of India. We really take no cognisance of these events. They really don’t hold much value as far as we are concerned,” he added.

His remarks come amid renewed attention to unofficial India-Pakistan interactions following reports of the Colombo meeting, even as official bilateral engagement between the two countries remains limited.

Ireland Stun India by One Run to Seal Historic 2-0 T20I Series Victory

Ireland scripted one of the biggest upsets in international cricket by defeating reigning T20 World Champions India by one run in the second T20 International at Stormont on Sunday, sealing a historic 2-0 series victory.

The memorable triumph ranks among the greatest achievements in Irish cricket, surpassing even some of the nation’s most celebrated victories, as the hosts humbled a star-studded Indian side featuring several IPL stars.

The architect of India’s batting collapse was Rajasthan-born software engineer Jai Moondra, who produced a sensational spell of 3 for 32. Moondra, who still holds an Indian passport, struck decisive early blows by dismissing Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma off successive first balls before removing captain Shreyas Iyer to leave India reeling.

Chasing a modest target of 155, India never recovered from the early collapse and finished at 153 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs, falling agonisingly short by a single run.

Tilak Varma fought a lone battle with a composed 55 off 46 balls, adapting well to the swinging and seaming conditions. In the closing stages, Harshit Rana smashed a quickfire 21 off just 10 deliveries to keep India’s hopes alive before being dismissed off the penultimate ball of the match.

Earlier, Ireland posted 154 for 8 after opting to bat. Harry Tector anchored the innings with 53, while Ben Calitz contributed a valuable 37. For India, Prince Yadav claimed 3 for 22, while Arshdeep Singh and Shivam Dube picked up two wickets each.

The defeat ended India’s remarkable streak of 16 consecutive T20I bilateral series victories, which had begun in mid-2023.

The loss also added to a series of disappointing milestones for the Indian men’s team under head coach Gautam Gambhir. Following a 0-3 home Test series whitewash against New Zealand in 2024 and India’s first ODI series defeat to New Zealand in early 2026, the latest setback against Ireland marks another low point for the team.

Ireland, meanwhile, celebrated a landmark achievement as they completed their first-ever T20I series win over India, showcasing disciplined bowling and determined batting throughout the two-match contest.

Brief Scores:

Ireland: 154/8 in 20 overs (Harry Tector 53, Ben Calitz 37; Prince Yadav 3/22, Arshdeep Singh 2/35, Shivam Dube 2/25).

India: 153/9 in 20 overs (Tilak Varma 55; Jai Moondra 3/32, Matt Hollard 3/26).

Ireland won by 1 run and clinched the two-match series 2-0.

Omar Abdullah Urges Punjab CM to Stop Unauthorized Charges on Livestock Vehicles

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking his immediate intervention to address the alleged unauthorized collection of fees from livestock transport vehicles passing through Punjab and to ensure the smooth movement of consignments destined for Jammu and Kashmir.

In his letter, Omar Abdullah highlighted concerns raised by the All Kashmir Wholesale Mutton Dealers Union regarding the difficulties being faced by livestock traders and transporters while transporting livestock through Punjab.

The Chief Minister stated that livestock-laden vehicles carrying valid permits and statutory documentation are reportedly being stopped by certain contractor groups operating in connection with cattle fairs and compelled to pay unauthorized charges during transit.

He said such practices are resulting in avoidable delays, financial losses for transporters and traders, and unnecessary hardship, while also adversely affecting animal welfare.

Referring to the findings of an internal committee constituted by the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Omar Abdullah said the committee had found that transporters were allegedly being forced to make substantial payments per vehicle without any apparent legal sanction.

The Chief Minister further noted that livestock movement is exempt from Goods and Services Tax (GST), adding that the continued imposition of such unauthorized charges is placing an additional financial burden on the livestock trade. He warned that the increased transportation costs could eventually impact meat prices, affecting consumers across Jammu and Kashmir.

Emphasising the longstanding relationship between Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah said the two neighbouring states share strong bonds of friendship, cooperation and economic interdependence. He observed that if such practices are indeed occurring, they are inconsistent with the spirit of mutual cooperation that has traditionally existed between the two governments and have caused concern among the trading community.

The Chief Minister also drew attention to reports that the tendering process for cattle fairs in Punjab is likely to begin shortly. He conveyed the apprehensions expressed by stakeholders that unless appropriate safeguards are introduced, the alleged unauthorized fee collection could continue during the upcoming contract period, resulting in recurring financial hardship for livestock traders.

Seeking Punjab’s intervention, Omar Abdullah requested Bhagwant Mann to have the matter examined and to ensure the smooth, secure and unhindered movement of livestock transport vehicles through Punjab. He also urged that no unauthorized interference or collection of charges be permitted from transporters carrying valid documents and complying with all statutory requirements.

Expressing confidence in the spirit of cooperation between the two governments, Omar Abdullah thanked the Punjab Chief Minister in advance for extending support to resolve the issue in the interest of traders, consumers and the seamless movement of essential livestock supplies between the two neighbouring regions.

Faizabad Bar Resolves Not to Defend Ram Temple Donation Case Accused, Seeks CBI Probe

Ayodhya, June 27: The Faizabad Bar Association on Monday resolved that none of its members would represent the eight accused arrested in the alleged embezzlement of donations received at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. The association also decided that any lawyer violating the resolution would be required to deposit ₹5 lakh per accused with the Bar Association.

The decision was taken unanimously at the association’s general body meeting, with lawyers stating that the alleged misappropriation of temple donations had deeply hurt their sentiments.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Bar Association President Kalika Prasad Mishra said no advocate affiliated with the association would appear on behalf of the arrested accused.

“If any lawyer still wishes to represent the accused, he or she will first have to submit an application and deposit ₹5 lakh per accused with the Bar Association as a contribution. The amount will be utilised by the association to pursue the prosecution of the case,” Mishra said.

The Bar Association also resolved to seek a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged embezzlement. Mishra said the association would first write to the CBI and subsequently approach the Allahabad High Court seeking directions for a CBI investigation. If necessary, it would move the Supreme Court.

The lawyers further announced plans to seek registration of an FIR against Champat Rai, Gopal Rao and Anil Mishra under Section 156(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which empowers a magistrate to direct police to investigate a cognizable offence if no action has been taken on a complaint.

“We will first approach the police for registration of the case, and if no action is taken, we will seek legal remedy through the courts,” Mishra said.

Bar Association Secretary Shailendra Jaiswal said the legal fraternity in Faizabad had collectively decided not to defend the accused in view of the allegations involving temple offerings.

“The sentiments of all of us have been hurt by the alleged theft of temple offerings. The lawyers of Faizabad have agreed not to plead on behalf of the arrested accused,” he said.

The eight accused—Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Lav Kush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Ram Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava and Ramashankar alias Tinnu Yadav—were associated with the counting of cash and valuables received as donations at the Ram Temple. They were arrested in connection with the alleged embezzlement and have been remanded to judicial custody until June 29.

Police teams on Sunday conducted simultaneous searches at the residences of all eight accused as part of the ongoing investigation.

Although Champat Rai and Anil Mishra were not named as accused in the FIR, the Bar Association demanded that they, along with Gopal Rao, leave Ayodhya within three days. The lawyers warned that if the demand was not met, they would launch a blockade of the city.

PTI repeatedly attempted to contact trustees Champat Rai and Anil Mishra, but they were unavailable for comment. However, Ravi Mishra, son of Anil Mishra, defended his father, stating that he had worked tirelessly in the service of the temple and denied any wrongdoing.

“My father was given responsibility for the temple, and he worked there day and night,” Ravi Mishra said, adding that temple-related matters were never discussed at home.

Meanwhile, media access outside the main entrance of the Ram Temple was restricted on Monday morning. Police personnel deployed at the temple complex informed journalists that media coverage had been prohibited at the location under official instructions.

The investigation into the alleged embezzlement of temple donations is continuing.

SIA Files Chargesheet in 1990 Murder of SKIMS Nurse Sarla Bhat After 35 Years

Srinagar, June 27: In a significant development in one of Jammu and Kashmir’s oldest unresolved terror cases, the State Investigation Agency (SIA), Kashmir, has filed a 737-page chargesheet before a Special Court in Srinagar in connection with the abduction and murder of SKIMS staff nurse Sarla Bhat in April 1990.

The chargesheet was filed before the Court of the Additional Sessions Judge, TADA/POTA and Special Judge designated under the NIA Act, Srinagar, marking a major step in the investigation nearly 35 years after the incident.

According to officials, the investigation was transferred to the SIA by the Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, on March 18, 2024. Following the transfer, the agency conducted an extensive investigation involving protected witnesses, eyewitness accounts, forensic and ballistic examinations, medical records, documentary evidence, electronic material and field investigations.

The SIA stated that the comprehensive chargesheet is supported by oral testimonies, forensic findings, documentary records and other evidence gathered during the course of the investigation.

According to the agency, Sarla Bhat, a staff nurse at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), was allegedly abducted near the hospital on April 18, 1990. Investigators allege that she was subjected to torture before being shot dead in the Omer Colony area of Malbagh, Srinagar.

Officials said the case remained unresolved for decades due to the prevailing security situation and an atmosphere of fear that discouraged witnesses from coming forward. Following the reopening of the investigation, the SIA reconstructed the sequence of events with the help of protected witnesses, eyewitness testimonies and scientific evidence.

The chargesheet names former JKLF chief Mohammad Yasin Malik along with Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi alias Idrees and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo as accused in the case.

According to the SIA, three of the accused—Abdul Hamid Sheikh, Mohammad Yousuf Sofi alias Idrees and Ghulam Mohammad Taploo—have since died, while Mohammad Yasin Malik is presently in judicial custody in another case. The agency also stated that proclamation proceedings have been initiated against Khurshid Ahmad Chalkoo, who is alleged to have fled to Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The chargesheet invokes offences under Sections 364, 341, 302 read with 34, 201 and 120-B of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC), relevant provisions of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA), 1987, and Sections 7 and 27 of the Arms Act, 1959.

According to the investigation, allegations portraying Sarla Bhat as an informer were found to be baseless and were allegedly used as a pretext for her targeted killing. The agency has alleged that the murder formed part of a broader campaign intended to spread fear and facilitate the displacement of members of the Kashmiri Pandit community during the early years of militancy.

The SIA described the filing of the chargesheet as an important milestone in its efforts to pursue justice in long-pending terror-related cases. The agency reiterated that the passage of time would not prevent investigation into serious offences and reaffirmed its commitment to bringing those allegedly responsible before the judicial process in accordance with law.

The matter will now proceed before the designated Special Court, which will examine the chargesheet and determine the subsequent course of legal proceedings.

Security Alert Issued for Delhi, Uttarakhand Over Alleged Khalistani Threat

Intelligence agencies have issued a security alert for Delhi and Uttarakhand following an alleged threat suggesting that Khalistani terrorists could target key locations in the coming days, official sources said.

According to intelligence inputs, the threat primarily concerns possible attacks on prominent temples in Delhi and Uttarakhand. Government establishments, railway stations, and police installations have also been identified as potential targets.

Sources said the alert was triggered after an email containing alleged threats was received. The email reportedly mentioned several temples, government offices, and political leaders as possible targets, prompting security agencies to initiate precautionary measures.

Following the alert, Delhi Police, Uttarakhand Police, and central intelligence agencies have been placed on high vigilance. Security arrangements at sensitive religious places, government buildings, transportation hubs, and other vulnerable locations are being strengthened to prevent any untoward incident.

Officials said Delhi Police has launched an investigation to verify the authenticity of the email and trace its origin. Cyber experts and intelligence agencies are examining technical details to determine whether the threat is credible.

Authorities have not disclosed specific locations or operational details for security reasons but have assured that all necessary preventive measures are being taken.

This is not the first such alert this year. Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations in January, intelligence agencies had warned of possible attempts by proscribed Khalistani outfits and Bangladesh-based terrorist organisations to target New Delhi and several other cities.

Similarly, in February, security agencies issued another alert after receiving intelligence inputs regarding a possible terror threat near the Red Fort in Delhi. Intelligence reports at the time indicated that terrorists could target a temple in the Chandni Chowk area, prompting heightened security around religious places and heritage sites.

Security agencies continue to maintain close coordination with local police forces and other law enforcement agencies to monitor developments and ensure public safety.

Officials have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity or unattended objects to the nearest police station or emergency helpline, while avoiding rumours or unverified information circulating on social media.

PM Modi Departs for Three-Day Seychelles Visit, To Attend Golden Jubilee National Day Celebrations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday departed on a three-day State Visit to Seychelles, where he will attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the island nation’s National Day as the Guest of Honour and hold bilateral talks with President Patrick Herminie to deepen strategic and maritime cooperation.

In his departure statement, Prime Minister Modi described Seychelles as a valued maritime neighbour and a key partner in India’s Vision MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) as well as New Delhi’s commitment to the Global South.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles, rooted in mutual trust, shared democratic values, respect for diversity, and deep people-to-people ties,” the Prime Minister said.

During the June 27–29 visit, Modi will participate in Seychelles’ Golden Jubilee National Day celebrations and become the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles, a milestone reflecting the close democratic and parliamentary ties between the two countries.

The Prime Minister said he looks forward to comprehensive discussions with President Patrick Herminie to further strengthen the enduring friendship and expand cooperation in maritime security, economic development, and regional stability in the Indian Ocean.

“Together, we will work to advance the progress of our peoples and promote security and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region,” Modi said.

He will also interact with the Indian community in Seychelles, acknowledging its longstanding contribution in strengthening the special relationship between the two nations.

According to officials, an Indian Armed Forces contingent and two Indian Navy ships will participate in the National Day celebrations, underscoring the growing defence and maritime partnership.

Prime Minister Modi last visited Seychelles in 2015. His latest visit follows President Patrick Herminie’s State Visit to India in February 2026 and is expected to further enhance bilateral ties, reinforce maritime cooperation, and advance the shared vision of a secure, peaceful, and prosperous Indian Ocean region.

Sonia Gandhi Slams Centre’s Silence on Gaza, Calls Modi Government’s Stand ‘Morally Reprehensible’

: Launching a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday criticised the Centre’s continued silence over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing its stance as “morally reprehensible” and “strategically inexplicable.”

In an opinion article published in The Indian Express, Gandhi accused the government of abandoning India’s long-standing commitment to justice, peace, and support for the Palestinian cause. She argued that New Delhi’s silence has weakened India’s diplomatic standing while distancing the country from its historical allies, including Palestine, Iran, and several nations across the Middle East.

Gandhi alleged that India has failed to respond to growing international concern over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, despite increasing global criticism and legal scrutiny. Referring to findings of a United Nations Commission of Inquiry, she highlighted reports documenting the large-scale destruction of civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and the heavy toll on children during the conflict.

She stated that India’s traditional foreign policy had always been guided by anti-colonial solidarity, respect for sovereignty, and humanitarian values. According to Gandhi, the present government’s silence has undermined those principles and isolated India from the broader international community.

The Congress leader also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagement with Israel, describing his visit ahead of the Israel-Iran conflict as a “bewildering strategic decision.” She argued that India has sacrificed both its moral standing and strategic interests while allowing Pakistan to project itself as a mediator in regional affairs.

Gandhi further claimed that several countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Latin American nations, have taken stronger positions on the Gaza conflict, while India has remained largely silent despite its historical leadership role among Global South nations.

Calling for a reassessment of India’s foreign policy, Gandhi urged the government to reclaim its independent diplomatic tradition and speak with “moral clarity” on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed Gandhi’s views, stating that her article serves as a reminder that India’s current foreign policy has alienated the country from its long-standing partners in the Middle East. Rahul Gandhi also shared the article, asserting that India should uphold humanitarian values and restore its independent voice in international affairs.

Action Begun on Ayodhya Ram Temple Donation Embezzlement Case, Guilty Will Not Be Spared: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said action has commenced against those accused in the alleged embezzlement of donations received at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, following the submission of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report.

Addressing a public gathering in Deoria, the Chief Minister asserted that anyone found guilty of misappropriating temple donations would face strict legal action and no one would be granted immunity.

Referring to his earlier announcement made in Ayodhya on June 19, Adityanath said the State Government had constituted an SIT to investigate the allegations and had assured that action would begin immediately after the report was submitted.

“The SIT report has been received, and action has started without delay. As I had promised, the truth will be separated from falsehood, and justice will be ensured,” the Chief Minister said.

Describing Ayodhya as a sacred symbol of Sanatan Dharma and the faith of millions, Adityanath warned against any attempt to undermine public trust or exploit religious sentiments.

“Ayodhya represents the faith of every devotee. No one will be allowed to play with the sentiments of the people. Whoever tampers with the faith of Sanatan Dharma will have to face the consequences,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government remains committed to maintaining transparency and accountability and emphasized that those responsible for any wrongdoing in connection with temple donations would not be spared under any circumstances.

Shafali Verma’s Blazing Fifty Powers India to Five-Wicket Win Over Bangladesh in Women’s T20 World Cup

Opener Shafali Verma smashed a brilliant half-century as India defeated Bangladesh by five wickets in their Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match at Old Trafford on Thursday, keeping their semifinal hopes alive despite another disappointing fielding display.

Chasing a target of 137, India reached 137/5 in 16.5 overs, thanks largely to Shafali’s explosive 53 off 34 balls, which included an array of attacking strokes against both pace and spin. She brought up her second Women’s T20 World Cup half-century in just 29 deliveries, giving India a commanding start.

After Smriti Mandhana departed early, Shafali dominated the Bangladesh bowlers and guided India to 63/1 in the powerplay. Her innings ended in an unusual manner when she was stumped after attempting a non-existent single off spinner Nahida Akter.

A brief slowdown in the middle overs was overcome by Jemimah Rodrigues, whose quickfire 26 off 15 balls ensured India comfortably crossed the finish line.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 136/8 after India’s fielding once again came under scrutiny. The Indian side dropped four straightforward catches inside the powerplay, continuing a worrying trend after similar lapses in the previous defeat against South Africa.

Bangladesh opener Juairiya Ferdous was the biggest beneficiary of India’s poor fielding, receiving three reprieves before eventually scoring 33 off 31 balls. Indian fielders Nandni Sharma, Yastika Bhatia, and Radha Yadav were among those guilty of missed opportunities.

Despite the fielding errors, India’s bowlers managed to restrict Bangladesh. Radha Yadav starred with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs, including the crucial dismissals of captain Nigar Sultana (32) and Sobhana Mostary (22). Spinner Shree Charani delivered an excellent final over, picking up two wickets while conceding just three runs, while Renuka Singh Thakur, making her first appearance in the tournament, struck in her opening over.

India’s discipline with the ball, however, remained a concern as they conceded seven wides and three no-balls.

With the victory, India remain in contention for a place in the semifinals but face a must-win clash against Australia on June 28 to keep their campaign alive.
