Delhi HC Permits Jailed MP Engineer Rashid to Visit Ailing Father

The Delhi High Court granted jailed Member of Parliament Engineer Rashid the permission to visit his ailing father at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on October 3, 2023. This decision comes under strict police escort and reflects the court’s consideration of humanitarian grounds.

The court emphasized the crucial need for adequate security arrangements during the visit, aiming to ensure both Rashid’s safety and compliance with judicial protocols. While addressing the plea, the judges clearly stated that the visit should be time-bound and strictly supervised to maintain order.

Engineer Rashid, currently held in judicial custody, filed his appeal stressing his father’s grave health condition. The plea detailed the urgency of the situation, seeking temporary relief for the visit, which the court ultimately granted, subject to specific restrictions.

In its ruling, the High Court acknowledged the importance of the situation and approved the request while highlighting the need for strict adherence to security protocols. This reflection of concern underscores the human aspect within the legal framework, revealing the court’s balance between justice and compassionate considerations.

The exact duration and modalities of the visit are yet to be determined by the relevant authorities. As authorities prepare for this supervised visit, further statements and guidelines are anticipated to ensure that everything proceeds within the established legal framework.

Lotus Blooming From Gangotri To Gangasagar: PM Modi On BJP’s Assembly Election Win

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the lotus is now blooming from Gangotri to Gangasagar with the BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal and asked all parties to work for change, not revenge, and ensure that the state’s future trumps over fear.
Addressing BJP workers at the party headquarters after the win in assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry, Modi said it was a special day in many ways as it heralds a bright future for the country.
“It is a day of trust in the great democracy of India, trust in the politics of performance, trust in the resolve of stability, trust in the spirit of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.
“I bow before the people of West Bengal, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Keralam,” he said at the victory celebration event where BJP President Nitin Nabin, Union ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, among others, were present.
Modi said on November 14 last year, when the Bihar election results came in, he told the BJP workers from this very spot that the Ganga flows onward from Bihar all the way to Ganga Sagar (in West Bengal).
“And today, with victory in West Bengal, from Gangotri (Uttarakhand) to Ganga Sagar (West Bengal), it is nothing but the lotus in full bloom. Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal today, in these states surrounding Mother Ganga, there are BJP-NDA governments,” he said.
Democracy, not fear, won in this festival of democracy in West Bengal, Modi said.
When the BJP has won in Bengal, there should be talk of ‘badlav’ (change) not ‘badla’ (revenge), ‘bhavishya’ (future) not ‘bhay’ (fear), he said.
The Prime Minister said winning and losing are a natural part of democracy and politics, but the people of the five states have shown the world why the country is the mother of democracy.
“Democracy is not just a system for us; it is the river of traditions in our veins. Today, not only has India’s democracy triumphed, but India’s Constitution has also triumphed. Our constitutional institutions have triumphed; our democratic processes have triumphed,” he said.
Modi said the nearly 93 per cent voter turnout in West Bengal has been historic in itself, and new records of voting have also been set in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.
He said women’s participation in this election has been exceptionally high and this is emerging as the brightest picture of Indian democracy.
” Today is a historic day, unprecedented. When years of penance transform into attainment, the joy that appears on the face, that joy today I am seeing on the faces of BJP workers across the country,” he said.

The Prime Minister also congratulated the Election Commission, all its employees, all the personnel involved in the voting process, especially the security forces, for the successful conduct of the assembly elections. “History will always remember your contribution to maintaining the dignity of India’s democracy,” he said. India Describes Attack On Fujairah ‘Unacceptable’

India on Tuesday described the wounding of three Indians in an attack on the United Arab Emirates’ port city of Fujairah as “unacceptable” and pressed for an immediate cessation of hostilities targeting innocent civilians.
New Delhi’s reaction came a day after the Indians were injured after a drone attack caused a fire at a major oil industry zone in Fujairah. The UAE had accused Iran of carrying out the strike.
“The attack on Fujairah that resulted in injury to three Indian nationals is unacceptable,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
“We call for immediate cessation of these hostilities and the targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians,” the spokesperson said.
Jaiswal said India continued to stand for dialogue and diplomacy to deal with the situation so that peace and stability could be restored across West Asia. “We also call for free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz in keeping with international law.
India stands ready to support all efforts for a peaceful resolution of issues,” he said. (Agencies)

KKR Beat SRH by 7 Wickets as Narine Reaches 200-Wicket Milestone in IPL

A clinical all-round performance powered Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a convincing seven-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), ending the latter’s five-match winning streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday.

Bowlers Set Up the Win

KKR’s triumph was set up by their spinners, led by Varun Chakravarthy (3/36) and veteran Sunil Narine (2/31), who combined to dismantle SRH for 165 in 19 overs.

Chakravarthy continued his impressive run, picking at least two wickets for the fourth consecutive match. Narine, meanwhile, achieved a major milestone, becoming only the third bowler in IPL history to reach 200 wickets. He joined Bhuvneshwar Kumar (215 wickets) and Yuzvendra Chahal (228 wickets) in the elite club.

SRH Collapse After Strong Start

Opting to bat, SRH looked dominant early on, racing to 77/1 in the powerplay and 107/2 at the halfway stage. Travis Head smashed a quickfire 61 off 28 balls, while Ishan Kishan contributed 42 off 29 balls.

However, the innings unraveled dramatically after Head’s dismissal in the ninth over. SRH lost nine wickets for just 60 runs in the final 10 overs, marking their first all-out innings of the IPL 2026 season. Kartik Tyagi added two wickets to aid KKR’s bowling effort.

Steady Chase Seals Victory

Chasing 166, KKR got off to a flying start with Finn Allen smashing 39 off just 13 balls before falling early.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane (43) and young Angkrish Raghuvanshi (59) then steadied the innings with an 84-run partnership, ensuring there were no further hiccups.

Rinku Singh finished the match in style, remaining unbeaten on 22 and hitting the winning boundary as KKR reached 169/3 in 18.2 overs, with 10 balls to spare.

Match Summary

  • SRH: 165 all out (19 overs) — Head 61, Kishan 42; Chakravarthy 3/36, Narine 2/31
  • KKR: 169/3 (18.2 overs) — Raghuvanshi 59, Rahane 43

The win marks KKR’s third consecutive victory, boosting their momentum in the tournament, while SRH will look to regroup after a rare batting collapse.

Supreme Court Seeks Centre’s Response on Vacancies in Armed Forces Tribunal

The Supreme Court of India on Monday took note of significant vacancies in the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) and sought responses from the Centre and other authorities on a plea demanding timely appointments.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi agreed to hear the petition and requested R Venkataramani to assist the court in the matter.

Concern Over Functioning of Tribunal

The plea, filed by the Armed Forces Tribunal Bar Association (Regional Bench), highlighted that out of the 11 AFT benches across the country, only three may remain functional by the end of the year if vacancies are not filled promptly.

The bench directed the petitioner’s counsel to share a copy of the petition with the Attorney General’s office and scheduled the next hearing in two weeks.

Demand for Time-Bound Appointments

The petition urges the government to complete the selection process and fill vacant posts in a time-bound manner, in compliance with provisions of the Armed Forces Tribunal Act, 2007.

Section 5 of the Act governs the composition and functioning of the tribunal and its benches. The plea also requested that existing judicial and administrative members be allowed to continue in their roles—with their consent—until new appointments are made.

Impact on Justice Delivery

The issue of vacancies is seen as critical, as delays in appointments could severely impact the tribunal’s ability to handle cases related to service matters and disputes involving armed forces personnel.

The court’s intervention is expected to expedite the appointment process and ensure that the tribunal continues to function effectively without disruption.

NCB Officials Suspended After BSF Constable’s Custodial Death; Probe Underway

Two officials of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), including an investigation officer and an assistant director, have been suspended following the custodial death of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable last month, sources said on Monday.

The deceased, Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Chakroi in the R.S. Pura area of Jammu, died in the early hours of March 20 after suffering cardiac arrest while in custody.

Arrest and Transit

Singh had been arrested by the NCB in connection with a narcotics-related case registered in Amritsar. A special NDPS court in Jammu had remanded him to custody, citing links to Punjab in the case.

According to sources, Singh was being transported from Jammu to Amritsar when he first complained of severe chest pain. Although his condition briefly improved, he again experienced discomfort upon reaching Amritsar on the night of March 19. He was admitted to a local hospital, where he suffered two cardiac arrests and died around 4 a.m. on March 20.

Allegations and Investigation

NCB sources indicated that Singh was allegedly in contact with operatives using virtual numbers linked to Pakistan. Investigators also pointed to a relative of Singh—also a BSF constable—who has previously been arrested in multiple narcotics cases.

Following the incident, procedures laid down by the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRC) for custodial deaths have been initiated. A post-mortem examination was conducted by a panel of three doctors, and a magisterial inquiry is currently underway.

The Jammu Police have registered a zero FIR, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the post-mortem report and the ongoing inquiry.

Family Demands Justice

Singh’s family has alleged lack of transparency regarding his detention. His mother, Gurmeet Kaur, said he had returned home on leave before being taken by the NCB on March 3.

“We were only informed about his deteriorating health on March 20. We were not told why he was detained. We want justice,” she said.

The matter has been reported to the NHRC, which has sought a detailed report and is expected to take further action based on the findings. The case is also under consideration in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Official Action

“The investigation officer and the assistant director concerned have been suspended,” a source confirmed, adding that internal and external probes are ongoing.

The incident has raised serious concerns over custodial safety and accountability, with authorities promising strict action if any wrongdoing is established.

BJP Surges Ahead in West Bengal Assembly Trends, TMC Trails as Counting Continues

Kolkata, May 4: Early trends in the West Bengal Assembly election counting on Monday संकेत a potentially dramatic राजनीतिक बदलाव, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) taking a commanding lead over the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).

According to data from the Election Commission of India, the BJP was leading in 185 seats in the 294-member विधानसभा, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 148. The TMC, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was trailing with leads in 91 constituencies as counting progressed.

Tight Battle, Early Momentum for BJP

The early trends suggest a possible breakthrough for the BJP in a state where the TMC has been in power since 2011. The चुनाव, widely seen as a referendum on Banerjee’s bid for a fourth consecutive term, has witnessed intense campaigning and high voter turnout.

While the BJP gained significant ground across border areas, tribal belts, and industrial regions, the TMC managed to hold on to parts of Kolkata and select rural strongholds, indicating a geographically divided mandate.

Key Constituency Highlights

  • In Bhabanipur, Mamata Banerjee was leading by over 16,700 votes against BJP challenger Suvendu Adhikari after five rounds of counting.
  • In Nandigram, Adhikari was ahead by over 3,100 votes against TMC’s Pabitra Kar in early rounds.

Several TMC heavyweights were trailing, raising concerns within the ruling party:

  • Udayan Guha trailed in Dinhata.
  • Manas Ranjan Bhunia lagged in Sabang despite a strong electoral history.
  • Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee was behind in Baruipur Paschim.

In Kolkata, BJP’s Purnima Chakraborty led TMC minister Shashi Panja, pointing to cracks in urban क्षेत्रों.

Vote Share and Deeper Trends

Preliminary estimates showed the BJP’s vote share rising to around 44.8%, while the TMC’s stood near 41.7%, indicating erosion in its traditional support base. The BJP also appeared to be making inroads into constituencies previously dominated by the TMC, particularly in segments affected by significant voter list revisions.

Poll Countermanded in Falta

The Election Commission cancelled polling in the Falta constituency in South 24 Parganas district, citing “severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process.”

Other Parties

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) was leading in Domkal, while the Indian Secular Front (ISF) was ahead in Minakhan. Smaller players also showed isolated leads in parts of Murshidabad.

Outcome Still Uncertain

Despite the BJP’s strong शुरुआती बढ़त, officials cautioned that trends could shift as counting progresses through multiple rounds. Clearer results are expected later in the day.

If the current trends hold, the outcome could significantly reshape West Bengal’s political landscape, marking one of the most consequential electoral contests in the state’s recent history.
