Life Imprisonment for Nine RSS Workers in CPI(M) Worker’s Murder Case

0

In a verdict delivered on Tuesday, a court in Thalassery, Kerala, sentenced nine RSS workers to life imprisonment for the murder of a CPI(M) worker 19 years ago. The case has been a long-standing reminder of the political tensions in the region.

The Incident

On October 3, 2005, Rijith Sankaran, a 25-year-old member of CPI(M) from Kannapuram Chunda, was brutally attacked and killed near a temple in Chunda. The incident occurred during a period of heightened political unrest between the CPI(M) and the RSS in the area.

Rijith was ambushed by the accused, armed with weapons, while he was walking home with friends. The attack left three of his friends injured and resulted in his tragic death.

The Convicts and Charges

The court convicted nine of the ten accused, as one of them had died in a road accident during the trial. The convicts include:

  • Sudhakaran (57)
  • Jayesh (41)
  • Ranjith (44)
  • Ajeendran (51)
  • Anilkumar (52)
  • Rajesh (46)
  • Sreekanth (47)
  • Sreejith (43) (Sreekanth’s brother)
  • Bhaskaran (67)

The convicts were found guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:

  • Section 302: Murder
  • Section 307: Attempted murder
  • Section 143: Unlawful assembly
  • Section 147: Rioting
  • Section 341: Wrongful restraint
  • Section 324: Voluntarily causing hurt with weapons

The Verdict

On January 4, the Additional District Sessions Court in Thalassery pronounced the accused guilty, culminating in Tuesday’s sentencing. The life imprisonment sentences underscore the severity of the crime and the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice.

Background Context

The case is emblematic of the violent political rivalries in north Kerala, especially between the RSS and CPI(M), which have often resulted in clashes and casualties over the years. Rijith’s murder was a flashpoint in this history of conflict.

This ruling brings a measure of closure to the victim’s family and highlights the consequences of politically motivated violence.

Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Asaram on Medical Grounds

0

In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to the controversial self-styled godman Asaram in a 2013 rape case, citing medical grounds. The bail is valid until March 31, with strict conditions attached to his release.

Medical Considerations and Conditions

A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal acknowledged that the 86-year-old Asaram suffers from multiple age-related health issues, including a severe heart ailment. Taking these factors into account, the apex court agreed to grant him temporary relief.

However, the court imposed a strict directive:
🔹 Asaram must not meet any of his followers during his bail period.

This condition aims to prevent any undue influence or potential misuse of his release.

Background of the Case

Asaram was convicted by a Gandhinagar court in 2023 in connection with a rape case filed by a woman who had lived in his ashram near Gandhinagar when the crime occurred in 2013. He is currently serving a life sentence in this case, apart from being incarcerated in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan for another rape conviction.

The Supreme Court clarified that its decision to grant bail would be restricted solely to medical considerations, setting aside other aspects of his conviction.

Timeline of Legal Proceedings

  • August 29, 2024: The Gujarat High Court rejected Asaram’s plea seeking suspension of his life sentence, finding no grounds to provide relief.
  • January 2023: The Gandhinagar trial court convicted Asaram in the 2013 case.
  • Current Plea: The Supreme Court sought a response from the Gujarat government regarding his petition, focusing only on his medical condition.

Future Outlook

Asaram’s interim bail period will expire on March 31, and the court has emphasized the temporary nature of this relief. Further hearings will determine the continuation or cessation of his sentence suspension based on health evaluations.

This interim decision reflects the court’s attempt to balance compassion for health issues with strict adherence to legal accountability.

Bahadur Singh Sagoo Elected as New AFI President

0

In a significant transition within Indian athletics, Asian Games gold medalist and former shot putter Bahadur Singh Sagoo was elected unopposed as the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday. Sagoo takes over from Adille Sumariwalla, who held the top position for over a decade.

A New Chapter for AFI

The 51-year-old Sagoo, who will serve a four-year term, has an illustrious sporting history. He clinched the men’s shot put gold at the 2002 Busan Asian Games with a throw of 19.03m and participated in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. With a lifetime best of 20.40m, Sagoo’s contributions to Indian athletics were recognized with the Padma Shri award.

His election was confirmed during the two-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the AFI. As a member of the AFI Athletes Commission, Sagoo emerged as the sole candidate after Anju Bobby George, the incumbent senior vice president, chose not to contest.

Leadership Updates

  • Sandeep Mehta: Former senior joint secretary of the outgoing council, Mehta has been elected unopposed as the new AFI Secretary.
  • Stanely Jones: Appointed as the Treasurer.

The elections for other posts were similarly uncontested, continuing a trend seen in the previous AGM in 2020.

Legacy of Adille Sumariwalla

Sumariwalla, who served as AFI president since 2012, was ineligible to contest under the National Sports Code. During his tenure, Indian athletics saw historic achievements, including Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a silver at the Paris Games.

Sumariwalla’s influence extends beyond national borders, as he is currently a member of the executive board of World Athletics, a position of global significance.

Looking Ahead

Sagoo’s election marks the beginning of a new era for the Athletics Federation of India. With his extensive experience as an athlete and administrator, expectations are high for continued progress in Indian athletics on both domestic and international stages.

YUVRAJ SINGH: LOSING TO NEW ZEALAND HURT MORE THAN BORDER-GAVASKAR LOSS

0

World Cup-winning former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has weighed in on Team India’s recent cricketing setbacks, asserting that the 0-3 home whitewash by New Zealand was a bigger disappointment than the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) defeat to Australia. However, he refused to join the criticism aimed at senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

A Historic Low at Home

India’s Test journey has been turbulent over the past months, with a 0-3 drubbing by an under-strength New Zealand on home soil — a first in India’s cricketing history. This was followed by a 1-3 loss to Australia in the BGT.

“Losing to New Zealand is more hurtful because they lost 3-0 at home. That is not acceptable,” Yuvraj told PTI Videos. “Losing the BGT is still acceptable; India has won twice in Australia before. Australia has been a dominant side for years.”

Under Fire: Kohli and Rohit

India’s batting lineup has come under scrutiny, with the spotlight on Kohli and Rohit’s struggles. While Kohli scored a hundred in the BGT, he struggled with deliveries outside the off stump. Rohit, on the other hand, managed just 31 runs across the series and chose to drop himself for the final Test.

Yuvraj defended the stalwarts: “We are talking about greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but people forget what they’ve achieved. They are among the greatest cricketers of this time. They are hurting more than us.”

Faith in the Team

Optimistic about a turnaround, Yuvraj placed his trust in the team and leadership, including new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“I feel Gautam Gambhir as coach, Ajit Agarkar as selector, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah are the best minds in cricket right now. They will decide the future of Indian cricket,” he said.

Rohit’s Selflessness Praised

Yuvraj lauded Rohit for his decision to step down for the final Test, calling it a selfless act.

“I’ve never seen a captain drop himself when out of form. Rohit kept the team ahead of himself. This shows his greatness as a captain. Whether India wins or loses, Rohit will always be a great leader,” he added.

Criticism and Support

Urging restraint, Yuvraj highlighted the media’s role in critiquing players.

“When players don’t perform, it’s easy to criticize them. But it’s hard to support them. Media’s job is to criticize, but my job is to support my brothers. They’re my family.”

A Legend’s Perspective

Having represented India in 304 ODIs, 40 Tests, and 58 T20s, Yuvraj amassed over 11,000 runs across formats. Drawing from his experience, he concluded: “I am a student of the game. I give my opinion, and my opinion is to back these players, not bring them down.”

Tragic IED Blast Claims Lives of Eight Security Personnel in Bijapur

0

In a devastating attack, Naxals detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) weighing approximately 60 to 70 kilograms, killing eight security personnel and a civilian driver in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh, on Monday. This marks the deadliest strike on security forces in the region in two years.

The incident occurred at around 2:15 PM near Ambeli village under Kutru police station limits. The victims, including four members each from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and Bastar Fighters, were returning from a three-day anti-Naxalite operation when their Scorpio vehicle was targeted. The blast created a crater over 10 feet deep, splitting the concrete road and obliterating the vehicle.

Inspector General of Police (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P. confirmed that all passengers, including the driver, died on the spot. The operation, conducted across the borders of Narayanpur, Dantewada, and Bijapur districts, had resulted in the elimination of five Naxalites and one DRG head constable prior to the attack.

Preliminary Investigation and Response

Officials believe the IED was planted long before the attack, with evidence suggesting buried wires concealed under a layer of soil and grass. A 150-meter-long wire connected to the device’s trigger was recovered from the scene. Forensic experts are currently analyzing the site to gather more details about the explosive device.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (South Bastar) Kamlochan Kashyap acknowledged lapses that may have led to the tragedy but refrained from elaborating. Reinforcements have been deployed, and search operations are underway to apprehend those responsible.

Victims Identified

The deceased security personnel include:

  • DRG Head Constable: Budhram Korsa
  • DRG Constables: Pandaru Ram Poyay, Baman Sodhi, Dumma Markam
  • Bastar Fighters Constables: Somdu Vetti, Sudarshan Vetti, Subarnath Yadav, Harish Korram
  • Civilian Driver: Tuleshwar Rana

The victims hailed from Bijapur, Dantewada, and Bastar districts. Their bodies have been transported to Dantewada for a wreath-laying ceremony scheduled for Tuesday.

Condolences and Commitments

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. President Droupadi Murmu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Chhattisgarh Governor Ramen Deka, and Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed their grief and resolute determination to eradicate Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).

President Murmu stated, “The country is determined to completely eradicate Naxalism.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured, “The sacrifice of our soldiers will not go in vain. We will end Naxalism from India by March 2026.”

Chief Minister Sai labeled the attack as an act of frustration by Naxalites facing intensified counter-insurgency operations. “The martyrdom of our jawans will not go in vain,” he asserted.

A History of Naxalite Violence

This incident is the first major Naxal attack in 2025 and comes amid the government’s push to eliminate LWE. In April 2023, ten security personnel and a civilian driver were killed in a similar IED blast in Dantewada district.

Moving Forward

Authorities are intensifying counter-Naxalite measures in the Bastar region, with enhanced security protocols and sustained operations aimed at dismantling Naxalite networks. Despite this tragic loss, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to restoring peace and security in affected regions.

JAMMU CONNECTED: CM OMAR ABDULLAH ASSURES REGION’S GROWTH WITH NEW RAILWAY DIVISION

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today dispelled concerns regarding the direct rail service between Kashmir and the rest of the country, affirming that the project will significantly benefit the Jammu region. Speaking at the virtual inauguration of the Jammu Railway Division by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Abdullah assured residents that his government will ensure robust economic growth stemming from the long-anticipated project.

Prime Minister’s Commitment to Connectivity
Addressing the function virtually from New Delhi, Prime Minister Modi hailed the Jammu Railway Division as a historic milestone in integrating Jammu and Kashmir into India’s national railway network. “This inauguration is a testament to our commitment to ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,’ bringing unparalleled connectivity and opportunities to the region,” Modi said.

Abdullah lauded Modi’s efforts in infrastructure development, emphasizing the role of connectivity in fostering growth. He highlighted complementary projects like the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway, the four-laning of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, and the Zojila and Z-Morh tunnels, which will ensure all-weather connectivity to Ladakh.

Addressing Local Concerns
Abdullah acknowledged apprehensions among Jammu residents, drawing comparisons to Pathankot’s economic challenges when rail service extended to Jammu. He reassured, “The rail service to Kashmir will not harm Jammu. On the contrary, it will enhance trade, tourism, and regional connectivity, benefiting both areas immensely.”

Abdullah highlighted the steep costs of air travel during winters, stating, “Airfares often surge to Rs 25,000 for a Rs 5,000 ticket. The new rail service will not only benefit passengers but also boost trade and industries with cargo train facilities.”

Jammu Railway Division: A Long-Pending Dream Fulfilled
Abdullah expressed gratitude for the establishment of the Jammu Railway Division, which now oversees 742.1 kilometers of railway tracks, including sections extending to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. “This division ensures administrative control remains in Jammu, enabling better coordination and recruitment opportunities,” he said.

The Jammu Railway Division will manage critical projects such as the Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway arch bridge—and the Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge, both engineering marvels located in Reasi district. These projects symbolize progress and will facilitate economic prosperity across the region.

Expanding Rail Service Across Jammu and Kashmir
Reflecting on the railway’s expansion over the decades, Abdullah outlined its trajectory: from Pathankot to Jammu, then Udhampur, Katra, and now towards Srinagar and Baramulla. “In my previous tenure as Chief Minister, I inaugurated the Katra railway station. Today, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, we celebrate another milestone,” he said.

He also emphasized future plans for extending the railway to Poonch-Rajouri in Jammu and beyond Baramulla in Kashmir. “This expansion will further unify the region, promoting tourism, trade, and cultural exchange,” Abdullah stated.

A Bright Future for Jammu’s Railways
Congratulating the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah affirmed, “The Jammu Railway Division is not just a development milestone but a promise of progress for generations to come.” The Chief Minister extended gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for their dedication to the region’s development.

As Jammu embraces its role as a key hub in India’s railway network, Abdullah’s assurances offer hope for a connected and prosperous future. With enhanced connectivity and infrastructure, the region is poised for a new era of growth and development.
