Chief Secretary Reviews NH Projects, Pushes for Accountability and Speedy Execution; Assesses Vibrant Villages Programme Rollout

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting with key infrastructure agencies to assess progress on various national highway (NH) projects across Jammu and Kashmir. He called for fortnightly physical and financial progress reports from executing agencies to ensure strict monitoring and timely completion of all ongoing works.

The meeting was attended by top officials including the Additional Chief Secretary (Forests), Principal Secretary (Finance), Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, Deputy Commissioners, Chief Engineers of PWD, and senior representatives from NHAI, NHIDCL, BRO, Beacon, and Project Sampark.

Dulloo emphasized that these highway projects are being monitored at the highest levels of government, and instructed officials to submit weekly updates to the PWD and biweekly reports to his office. He also directed that reports should identify individuals responsible for any delays, warning that a lackadaisical approach would not be tolerated and would invite disciplinary action.

“Work in double shifts where necessary. The administration is ready to provide all required support,” Dulloo assured the agencies.

Finance Secretary Shailendra Kumar urged Deputy Commissioners to support agencies in identifying designated mining blocks to ensure uninterrupted supply of raw materials for construction.

Focus on Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) Phase-II

In a parallel meeting, Chief Secretary Dulloo reviewed preparedness for implementation of Phase-II of the Vibrant Villages Programme, aimed at transforming life in border villages across Jammu and Kashmir.

Attended by the Secretary, Planning Development & Monitoring Department (PD&MD) and respective Deputy Commissioners, the meeting stressed the need for designating nodal officers, preferably Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), for effective execution of VVP in their areas.

“The programme should be aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision of inclusive and sustainable border development,” Dulloo said.

He instructed the Planning Department to integrate various government schemes like HADP, Mission YUVA, Daksh Kisan, and JKRLM to build model villages showcasing strengths in agriculture, horticulture, skilling, and tourism.

He also directed DCs to complete service and infrastructure gap analyses, form District and UT-level committees, and expedite submission of the first batch of Village Action Plans (VAPs) to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Secretary PD&MD Talat Parvez Rohella informed that 124 border villages in 43 blocks across eight districts—Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Rajouri, Poonch, Bandipora, Baramulla, and Kupwara—have been selected under the programme. Additionally, four vulnerable villages in Poonch have been recommended due to cross-border displacement.

India-Pakistan Truce Was Directly Negotiated, Not Brokered by US: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has clarified that the India-Pakistan understanding to cease hostilities was the result of direct negotiations between the two nations, rejecting claims by US President Donald Trump that Washington played a mediating role.

In an interview to Dutch broadcaster NOS during his ongoing Europe tour, Jaishankar emphasized that while global powers expressed concern during the military standoff, the ceasefire was a bilateral decision reached independently by New Delhi and Islamabad.

“The cessation of firing and military action was something which was negotiated directly between India and Pakistan,” Jaishankar said, underscoring India’s sovereign decision-making.

He further stated that India made it explicitly clear to all parties, including the United States, that Pakistan must convey its intent to halt hostilities directly to India.

“We told everyone, including the US, that if the Pakistanis want to stop fighting, they need to tell us directly. Their general has to call up our general – and that is exactly what happened,” he said.

This statement comes in the wake of President Trump’s repeated assertions that Washington helped broker the truce, following the dramatic escalation in military tensions earlier this month.

Operation Sindoor Still Active

Jaishankar also reaffirmed India’s right to respond to terrorism emanating from across the border. Referring to Operation Sindoor, the precision strikes carried out by India on May 7 targeting nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and PoJK, he said the operation continues as a clear message to Pakistan.

“If the terrorists are in Pakistan, we will hit them where they are. The operation continues not for the sake of conflict, but as a deterrent against future attacks,” Jaishankar asserted.

The strikes came in retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which Jaishankar described as “barbaric”. He revealed that the attackers singled out victims based on their religion, committing mass murder with the aim of igniting religious discord in India.

“It was imperative to respond. The lack of response was not an option,” he said firmly.

Ceasefire Amid Retaliatory Strikes

Following India’s surgical operations, Pakistan attempted retaliatory strikes on May 8, 9, and 10, targeting Indian military installations. These attempts were swiftly repelled with heavy retaliation, causing significant damage to Pakistani military assets.

On May 10, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri officially announced that India and Pakistan had agreed to halt all military actions across land, air, and sea.

Talks Possible – But Only on PoJK and Terrorism

Jaishankar also opened the door for dialogue with Pakistan — but with clear boundaries.

“We are willing to talk to Pakistan, but only about the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK) and on the issue of terrorism,” he said.

When asked about the potential impact of regional tensions with Pakistan and China on India’s economic growth, the minister dismissed the notion of choosing between security and prosperity.

“Security and economic growth are part of the same coin. You can’t grow without security. Our challenges are far more threatening than Europe’s, and we have prioritized accordingly,” he explained.

Jaishankar is currently on a three-nation tour of the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany, focused on strengthening diplomatic, strategic, and economic ties with European nations.

India Expels Second Pakistani Official in a Week Over Espionage Charges

In a significant diplomatic move, India on Wednesday expelled a Pakistani official posted at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on charges of espionage, marking the second such expulsion in just one week amid rising bilateral tensions.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Pakistani staffer has been declared “persona non grata” for engaging in activities inconsistent with his diplomatic status. He has been directed to leave the country within 24 hours.

“The Government of India has declared a Pakistani official, working at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, persona non grata for indulging in activities not in keeping with his official status in India,” the MEA said in a formal statement.

Following the expulsion, Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi, Saad Warraich, was summoned and handed a demarche, or diplomatic protest, by the Indian side. He was instructed to ensure that no Pakistani diplomat or official in India misuses their diplomatic privileges.

This move comes just days after a similar expulsion of another Pakistani staffer on May 13 for allegedly being involved in espionage activities. In a reciprocal move, Pakistan expelled an Indian official from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

These developments are unfolding even as police investigations in Punjab and Haryana have uncovered an espionage ring linked to Pakistani intelligence services. At least three individuals have been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive information about Indian military movements and strategic locations.

“A suspect was arrested based on credible intelligence for leaking sensitive information to a Pakistan-based handler regarding Indian Army movements,” Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav had confirmed earlier.

Last week, the Amritsar Rural Police arrested Falaksher Masih and Suraj Masih on similar charges, alleging that they had leaked photos and information of Army cantonments and air bases to Pakistani intelligence operatives.

The diplomatic tensions coincide with heightened military activity between the two nations. On May 7, India carried out precision air strikes on nine terrorist camps deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK) in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 civilians dead.

In retaliation, Pakistan attempted cross-border strikes on Indian military installations on May 8, 9, and 10, which were firmly repelled by the Indian Armed Forces, resulting in significant damage to several Pakistani air bases, radar systems, and command centres.

Subsequently, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced on May 10 that India and Pakistan had agreed to cease all hostilities across land, air, and sea, marking a temporary thaw in what has become an increasingly volatile diplomatic and military standoff.

The expulsion of Pakistani officials, however, signals India’s continued zero-tolerance stance on espionage and underscores the fragile state of bilateral ties, even amidst diplomatic overtures for de-escalation.

LG Manoj Sinha Announces Govt Jobs, Rehabilitation Package for Shelling Victims; Says Operation Sindoor Not Over, Only Suspended

In a strong message following the recent cross-border shelling, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today announced Government jobs for one family member of each person killed in Pakistan’s unprovoked firing and declared a comprehensive Central relief package for rebuilding homes and commercial properties damaged during the attacks. He emphasized that Operation Sindoor—India’s retaliatory strike on terror camps in Pakistan—was not over, but only suspended.

During his extensive visit to Rajouri and Poonch, the LG met with affected families, interacted with the injured at hospitals, reviewed security with top officials, and paid homage to the martyrs, including Dr. Raj Kumar Thapa, who was killed in the enemy shelling.

“We have taken an important decision. One member from every family of those martyred in Pakistan shelling will get a Government job,” Sinha announced.

He further stated that the Central Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, will approve a special rehabilitation package for damaged properties and ensure construction of individual and community bunkers under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme to protect civilians from future attacks.

Addressing the media and citizens, the LG said that the recent wave of shelling was Pakistan’s response to Operation Sindoor, in which the Indian Armed Forces struck nine terrorist launchpads deep inside Pakistan and PoJK in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.

“India never supports war, but it will not hesitate to defend its people. The terrorists and their sponsors who executed the Pahalgam killings were taught a lesson,” Sinha asserted.

The LG said that no civilian or military Indian targets were attacked during Operation Sindoor, only terror sites. Despite this, Pakistan retaliated by targeting civilian populations, resulting in 16 deaths—including 13 in Poonch (four of them children) and three in Rajouri.

During a high-level security review in Poonch, Sinha hailed the Indian Armed Forces for their swift and effective operation.

“Operation Sindoor is a symbol of India’s military strength. The whole world is witness to our Armed Forces dismantling terror infrastructure in Pakistan,” he said. “Our forces have demonstrated that there is no area in Pakistan that cannot be reached if provoked.”

The LG didn’t mince words on Pakistan’s financial and moral bankruptcy.

“They borrow money to fuel terrorism. But the pain we’ve inflicted will not be forgotten. If they attempt another misadventure, they will be crushed. Their seven generations will remember the consequences.”

Sinha also condemned Pakistan for targeting religious places—including Gurudwara Dera Santpura Nangali Sahib, a temple, and a mosque—in what he called an attempt to disrupt India’s social fabric.

“The people of Poonch, especially the Sikh community, have shown immense courage. Their unity has strengthened the resolve of our soldiers,” he said after paying his respects at the Gurudwara.

Later, during his visit to Dungus, one of the heavily shelled areas, the LG chaired a meeting with senior officials and directed immediate steps for restoration of essential services, construction of bunkers, medical service upgrades, and reinforcement of civil defence mechanisms. He also called for an Action Taken Report (ATR) to be submitted to the Divisional Commissioner and Chief Secretary.

The LG was accompanied by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, IG Jammu Bhim Sen Tuti, Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar, and Deputy Commissioner Poonch Vikas Kundal, among others.

LG Manoj Sinha Visits Shelling-Hit Rajouri, Assures Support to Affected Families

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today visited border areas in Rajouri district to meet families affected by the recent unprovoked heavy shelling from across the border by Pakistan. He also took stock of relief, rehabilitation and damage control measures being undertaken in the region.

During his visit, the Lieutenant Governor went to the Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, where he inquired about the health and recovery of civilians injured in the shelling. He interacted with doctors and patients, assuring all necessary support from the administration.

The LG was briefed by Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Abhishek Sharma, regarding the current ground situation, availability of essential services, emergency response, and the disbursement of relief to affected families. He was also informed about the extent of property and livestock damage and the need for additional underground bunkers in the district to ensure civilian safety.

In a solemn moment during the review meeting, the gathering paid homage to Dr. Raj Kumar Thapa, the Additional District Development Commissioner of Rajouri, who lost his life in the line of duty during the enemy shelling in a civilian area.

Later in the day, LG Sinha visited Nowshera, one of the worst-hit sectors, and assessed the damage to residential homes and public infrastructure. He met with local residents and listened to their grievances and safety concerns, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring their protection and speedy rehabilitation.

“The Government of India is fully committed to the safety and well-being of every citizen living in the border areas. Every effort will be made to strengthen relief, infrastructure, and protection mechanisms,” LG Sinha assured.

The visit comes amid escalating ceasefire violations from across the border, heightening tensions and endangering civilian lives in frontier districts.

Teen Sensation Suryavanshi Shines as Royals End IPL 2025 on a High

Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi capped off a promising debut season with a composed half-century as Rajasthan Royals signed off from a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign with a six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in an otherwise inconsequential contest on Tuesday.

The prodigious Suryavanshi, who has emerged as one of the rare positives in an otherwise forgettable season for the Royals, scored a dazzling 57 off 33 balls to help his team chase down 188 with 17 balls to spare.

Royals’ Chase: Youth and Flair Take Centre Stage

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal provided an explosive start, smashing a quickfire 36, including 18 runs off a single over from CSK’s Khaleel Ahmed. His early aggression laid the groundwork for the chase before he was bowled by Anshul Kamboj.

Suryavanshi then took charge, blending maturity with fearlessness. He targeted CSK’s spin stalwart Ravindra Jadeja, hitting him for two towering sixes and brought up his fifty with a fourth maximum off Noor Ahmad.

In partnership with skipper Sanju Samson (41), Suryavanshi stitched a match-winning 98-run stand, with Samson playing the supporting role.

Although the Royals briefly wobbled after the dismissals of Samson, Suryavanshi, and Riyan Parag (3), the chase remained in control. Dhruv Jurel (31)* and Shimron Hetmyer (12)* ensured there were no further hiccups, sealing the victory with 17 balls remaining.

It was only the Royals’ fourth win of the season, but enough to potentially avoid a bottom-place finish.

CSK Innings: Mhatre, Brevis Shine in a Disjointed Batting Display

Earlier, Ayush Mhatre once again showcased his talent with a brisk 20-ball 43, helping CSK post a competitive 187/8. The 19-year-old’s innings was crucial after early setbacks saw CSK lose half their side inside eight overs.

Openers Devon Conway (10) and Urvil Patel (0) fell cheaply to Yudhvir Singh Charak (3/47), who combined effectively with Akash Madhwal (3/29) to rip through the top and lower-middle order.

A brief revival came via Dewald Brevis (42 off 25) and Shivam Dube (39), who added 59 runs for the sixth wicket. Brevis struck three sixes in his entertaining cameo before being dismissed by Madhwal.

The home crowd erupted as MS Dhoni walked in, and the CSK skipper delighted fans with a solitary six before being dismissed for 16 off 17 balls, failing to provide the late flourish his side desperately needed.

Bowling Highlights

For the Royals, Yudhvir Singh was the pick of the bowlers with a fiery spell, including crucial wickets in the powerplay. Akash Madhwal continued his strong run with another disciplined performance, while Tushar Deshpande and Wanindu Hasaranga played supporting roles.

CSK’s bowlers had little answer to the Royals’ aggressive intent, though Ravichandran Ashwin (2/41) showed glimpses of control in the middle overs.

Brief Scores:

  • Chennai Super Kings: 187/8 in 20 overs
(Ayush Mhatre 43, Dewald Brevis 42; Yudhvir Singh 3/47, Akash Madhwal 3/29)
  • Rajasthan Royals: 188/4 in 17.1 overs
    (Vaibhav Suryavanshi 57, Sanju Samson 41; R Ashwin 2/41)

McCullum Urges England Cricketers to Show Humility, Win Back Public Trust Ahead of India, Ashes Clashes

England head coach Brendon McCullum has urged his players to display greater humility and reconnect with the public, as the team prepares for a demanding season featuring a home series against India and the Ashes in Australia.

Speaking to British media ahead of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, McCullum expressed concern over the team’s recent public perception, emphasizing that professionalism goes beyond on-field performance.

“It’s not just about what you do on the cricket field,” said McCullum. “It’s how you carry yourself. It’s how you interact with the public. It’s the messaging that you give.”

“Show Some Humility” – McCullum’s Message to Players

England’s players have come under fire following a disappointing Champions Trophy campaign in Pakistan, where they failed to register a single win. Criticism intensified after former star Kevin Pietersen lambasted the team for skipping practice in favour of golf during a lacklustre limited-overs tour of India.

McCullum noted that despite the squad’s immense talent, some players appeared out of touch with fans and public sentiment.

“The ability these guys have to play under the brightest lights and the pressure that comes with it is immense,” he said. “But the ability to remain humble, and not appear disconnected from the general population, is something we must work on.”

Missteps and Missed Opportunities

Recent comments from within the England camp have also drawn scrutiny. Fast bowler Mark Wood admitted last month that the team could be “a bit dumb” at times, while director of cricket Rob Key candidly advised the players to “stop talking rubbish.”

McCullum acknowledged that the team has sometimes failed to communicate effectively in public forums.

“What we say in that dressing room is often very different from what you expect to come out publicly. We’ve got to be smarter with our words and make sure we don’t lose touch with the English people.”

Bazball’s Promise and Pitfalls

Since taking the helm in 2022, McCullum has revolutionized England’s red-ball game with the high-octane “Bazball” philosophy – a bold, attacking brand of cricket that brought rapid early success. Under his guidance, England won 10 of their first 11 Tests after managing just one victory in their previous 17.

Now ranked second in the world, England have, however, shown signs of inconsistency, with sloppy performances and a string of defeats threatening to unravel their resurgence.

“People were excited by how we played at the start. They were enthralled by the freewheeling cricket,” McCullum reflected. “But with time, and mixed results, it’s important we look back and evaluate the opportunities we’ve seized—and those we’ve let slip.”

Looking Ahead: “We Want People to Be Proud”

With India arriving for a marquee Test series next month, followed by a much-anticipated Ashes tour, McCullum believes this is a pivotal moment for the team to reset its image and win back public confidence.

“We want fans along for the ride,” he said. “We want people to look back and say, ‘Crikey, that team in the mid-2020s was one we loved to follow, a team we felt part of.’”

FIR Filed Against BJP’s Amit Malviya, Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami for Alleged Fake News Campaign

An FIR has been registered against BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya and Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly spreading false information with malicious intent, police officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The case was filed at the High Grounds Police Station based on a formal complaint lodged by Shrikant Swaroop B N, the head of the legal cell of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC).

The FIR invokes Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Swaroop alleged that Malviya and Goswami orchestrated a “criminally motivated campaign” to deliberately mislead the Indian public by falsely claiming that the Istanbul Congress Centre in Turkiye is the overseas office of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Describing the act as a “heinous attempt to provoke unrest and manipulate nationalist sentiments,” Swaroop asserted that the misinformation campaign was aimed at damaging the credibility of a major political institution and undermining India’s democratic and national security interests.

“The accused maliciously propagated this fabricated claim with the intent to deceive, defame, and disrupt the social and political fabric of the country,” Swaroop wrote in his complaint.

He also noted the sensitive geopolitical context, referring to the strained diplomatic ties between India and Turkiye, citing Turkey’s perceived pro-Pakistan stance as a complicating factor that could amplify public backlash and instability.

“This represents an unprecedented attack on the foundations of our democracy, our national security, and the integrity of public discourse,” Swaroop said, calling for immediate and stringent action.

In addition to the FIR, the IYC legal head has appealed to the Press Council of India, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and other relevant agencies to treat the complaint as a matter of national urgency.

As of now, neither Malviya nor Goswami have officially responded to the allegations.

Speaker Om Birla Hails Armed Forces for Operation Sindoor; Launches ‘Tiranga Yatra’ in Bundi

Lauding the unmatched courage and dedication of the Indian armed forces, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday said the successful execution of Operation Sindoor was not just a military achievement, but a tribute to the feminine spirit and the sacrifices made by the families of soldiers.

Birla was speaking at the inauguration of the ‘Tiranga Yatra’—a nationwide outreach initiative launched to honour the bravery of India’s defence personnel. The event took place in Bundi and witnessed the participation of thousands of citizens, including former Rajasthan minister Prabhu Lal Saini and Bundi district BJP president Rameshwar Meena.

“In recent days, a wave of patriotism has surged in the heart of every Indian. The valour displayed during Operation Sindoor will be remembered forever,” said Birla. “It is vital to understand that the triumph of our soldiers is also the triumph of every mother, sister, and daughter of this nation.”

He highlighted the symbolic importance of the operation’s name, saying:
“More than a military manoeuvre, Operation Sindoor was a solemn vow—to safeguard the ‘sindoor’ of every woman whose husband protects the nation’s borders and its Tricolour.”

The Tiranga Yatra began from Azad Park and passed through key locations including Kota Road, Nagar-Sarag Kund, Indira Market, Ahimsa Circle, Khoja Gate, and Gayatri Nagar, concluding at the Shaheed Ramkalyan Memorial on Civil Lines Road.

Speaking briefly to PTI Videos, Birla added, “Operation Sindoor was India’s decisive strike against terrorism. Our fight will not end until terrorism is wiped out completely.

The yatra aims to stir national pride and pay homage to the sacrifices of the armed forces, reinforcing the commitment to a united and secure India.
