Farooq Abdullah Urges Government to Learn from Leh Violence

0

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) President Farooq Abdullah has called on the BJP-led Central government to heed lessons from the recent violence in Leh, Ladakh. The unrest erupted due to long-standing demands for statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule, reflecting deep-seated local frustrations.

During a press conference held on Thursday, Abdullah attributed the violent protests to unfulfilled promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir over the years. He highlighted that these demands resonate with the citizens’ aspirations for greater autonomy and rights.

Abdullah emphasized that the unrest stems from local grievances rather than external influences. He noted the initiatives of social activist Sonam Wangchuk, who organized peaceful protests, including a hunger strike and a barefoot march from Leh to Delhi, emphasizing non-violence as a way to voice local concerns.

The JKNC chief also issued a stark warning about the potential risks facing border areas like Ladakh, particularly in light of China’s destabilizing actions in the region. He urged the Central government to engage in earnest dialogue with the people of Ladakh, aiming to address their needs and aspirations effectively.

In the wake of the violence, four people lost their lives, and over 80 individuals sustained injuries, including police personnel. Protesters expressed their discontent by setting fire to the BJP office, police vehicles, and various buildings. In response, law enforcement deployed tear gas and opened fire to control the situation.

Abdullah’s remarks echo a growing concern that the region’s stability relies heavily on the government’s ability to respond to the legitimate demands of its citizens. He concluded that to maintain peace and prevent further escalation, the government must prioritize dialogue and address the core issues that lead to unrest.

Jammu to Srinagar Vande Bharat Train Extension Announced

0

The Railways Department has confirmed plans to extend the Vande Bharat Express from Jammu to Srinagar, enhancing connectivity for travelers in the region. This semi-high-speed train will significantly benefit commuters, pilgrims, and tourists alike.

Divisional Railway Manager Jammu, Vivek Kumar, announced that preparations are underway to implement this expansion. He acknowledged that the plan faced delays due to extensive damage to railway tracks from recent floods and heavy rains.

“We are working on it. The delay occurred because of massive damage to tracks due to floods and heavy rains,” Kumar stated. “But sooner or later, this service will be available to the people of Jammu.” He emphasized that restoration work is progressing rapidly, and officials will launch the service once they receive safety clearances.

The introduction of the Katra–Srinagar Vande Bharat service earlier this year dramatically decreased travel time between the scenic Valley and the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine base camp. With this new extension to Jammu, the Railways aims to further enhance regional connectivity.

Upon becoming operational, the Jammu–Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is expected to operate daily. This service will provide improved travel comfort and reduced journey times compared to existing rail and road options.

The Vande Bharat train has already proven to be a pivotal component in the modernization efforts of Indian Railways, positioning it as a hassle-free transport solution in the Union Territory.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has constituted a high-level committee on Thursday to develop a Single Window System aimed at streamlining the processing of Recruitment Rules. This initiative seeks to enhance efficiency in handling recruitment norms across various departments.

An official order from the General Administration Department (GAD-JK) outlines the formation of this committee, appointing the Principal Secretary of the Public Works (R&B) Department as its Chairman. The committee comprises several key officials, including the Commissioner/Secretary of the General Administration Department, the Secretary of the School Education Department, the Secretary of the Information Technology Department, and the Secretary of the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Additionally, members from the Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission and the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board, all holding ranks no lower than Additional Secretaries, will also be part of the committee. The Chairman retains the authority to invite other members as deemed necessary.

The committee’s primary task involves finalizing the digitization of Recruitment Rules, aligning its processes with the efficient “Delhi Model”. This model aims to expedite the recruitment process through systematic integration. The committee will also collaborate with BISAG-N, designated as the digital partner, to ensure a seamless integration of technology.

This initiative reflects the Jammu and Kashmir government’s commitment to improving operational efficiency in public recruitment. By establishing a Single Window System, officials hope to simplify bureaucratic hurdles and accelerate the recruitment process for various government positions.

The ARI & Trainings Department will provide necessary support to the committee, ensuring that its objectives align with the broader goals of enhancing government services and accountability.

As recruitment processes often face scrutiny regarding their transparency and efficiency, this committee’s formation signals a proactive approach by the Jammu and Kashmir government. By adopting digital solutions, the aim is to foster a more responsive and transparent system that meets the needs of job seekers in the region.

A Pakistani intruder faced arrest along the International Border in the R S Pura sector on Thursday, officials confirmed. This incident marks the second Pakistani national apprehended by the Border Security Force (BSF) in this area within September.

The BSF personnel, remaining vigilant, detected the movement of an individual attempting to cross into Indian territory from Pakistan. They promptly responded, overpowering the intruder as soon as he crossed the border.

No incriminating items were discovered on the arrested individual, who is currently under interrogation by combined teams from various security agencies. This comprehensive investigation aims to ascertain the intentions behind the intrusion and gather intelligence about potential network links.

Earlier this month, on September 8, another Pakistani intruder was detained in the same R S Pura sector, enhancing concerns over border security. The troops engaged in the earlier incident fired warning shots after challenging Siraj Khan, a resident of Sargodha in Punjab, Pakistan, who tried to breach the border fence.

During the September incident, BSF personnel recovered several Pakistani currency notes from Khan, highlighting the persistent infiltration issue along the Indo-Pak border. As tensions continue to simmer, this latest arrest underscores the concerted efforts of the BSF to maintain national security.

Authorities emphasize the importance of heightened surveillance and proactive measures to deter such incursions. Highlighting their commitment, a BSF spokesperson stated, “We remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard our borders and protect the integrity of our nation against such infiltration attempts.” These apprehensions reflect ongoing challenges faced by security forces amid escalating border tensions.

With the region’s security dynamics in constant flux, the BSF’s operational readiness remains critical. The frequent arrests of Pakistani nationals attempting to infiltrate India reinforce the ongoing need for vigilance. Stakeholders are increasingly focused on enhancing intelligence-sharing protocols and coordination among various defense agencies to counteract these challenges effectively.

Omar Abdullah Conducts Aerial Survey of Flood-Hit Kathua Areas

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected villages in Kathua district on Thursday, assessing the extent of damage from recent heavy rainfall and flooding.

During the survey, Abdullah interacted with local residents who suffered losses, particularly in the village of Duggain in Billawar, where many houses sustained significant damage. This direct engagement aimed to provide emotional support and gain first-hand insights into the community’s needs during this crisis.

Following the aerial assessment, the chief minister convened a high-level meeting with district administration officials. He emphasized the urgency of delivering relief aid to the affected households, showcasing his administration’s commitment to addressing the immediate needs of the victims.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Abdullah reiterated the government’s resolve to assist all families impacted by the flood. He stated, “We will ensure that all possible assistance reaches those affected by this natural calamity.” This promise aims to restore hope among residents struggling with the aftermath of the flooding.

In addition to his visit to Kathua, Chief Minister Abdullah plans to travel to the Mahore area of Reasi district to further gauge the situation, where flash floods have wreaked havoc. His commitment to personal involvement in these assessments illustrates a proactive approach to managing disaster recovery in J&K.

Data from the region indicates that the recent monsoon has brought unprecedented rainfall, a significant 150% above average, leading to severe flooding. As the government mobilizes resources, officials note that rural areas experience the most challenges in recovery, primarily due to infrastructure damage.

Experts highlight the importance of timely relief operations, stating that swift action can minimize long-term psychological and economic impacts on affected families. Abdullah’s immediate response aligns with these concerns, reflecting a government focused on compassionate governance.

As the chief minister leads the charge in recovery efforts across flood-affected areas, residents in Kathua and Reasi remain hopeful for swift government action to navigate these challenging times. Curfew in Ladakh: 50 Detained After Violent Clashes

0

On Thursday, authorities imposed a curfew in Leh, Ladakh, following violent clashes that left four dead and over 89 injured. The unrest began on Wednesday as protestors called for a shutdown to demand statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh. Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary forces enforced the curfew after widespread violence erupted in the region.

Protests erupted when the Leh Apex Body (LAB) organized a shutdown to further discussions with the Centre on critical issues including statehood. The situation deteriorated, resulting in arson, vandalism, and violent street battles. Witnesses reported incidents of burning vehicles and the BJP office.

In support of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, a shutdown occurred in Kargil. Meanwhile, in Leh, the local police detained around 50 individuals involved in the clashes. A police spokesperson stated, “The situation in the curfew-bound areas is well under control, with no incidents reported.”

As per reports, three of the injured citiens are from Nepal. Investigations are underway to uncover possible foreign involvement in the violence.

The LAB and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have pressed for their demands over the past four years. Officials revealed that the next round of negotiations with the Central government is scheduled for October 6, an important date for stakeholders seeking solutions.

District Magistrate Rakesh Kumar implemented several prohibitory orders in Kargil. These include prohibitions against gatherings of five or more, public demonstrations, and the use of sound amplifying devices without prior permission. The orders intend to maintain public peace during this turbulent period.

Fears escalated when two protestors from the ongoing hunger strike were hospitalized on Tuesday. Following this, the LAB youth wing initiated a call for protests that spiraled out of control. Claiming that the unrest was provoked by misleading statements, the Central government cited a lack of satisfaction among politically motivated individuals regarding progress in talks.

“The government stands committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Ladakh by providing adequate constitutional safeguards,” the home ministry stated late Wednesday. Lt. Governor Kavinder Gupta described the violence as part of a conspiracy, stating, “Curfew has been imposed as a precaution to prevent further casualties.”

During an online conference, Sonam Wangchuk appealed to protesters to halt violence. He emphasized that such actions only serve to jeopardize their cause, saying, “We do not want instability in Ladakh and the country.” Commenting on the situation, he stated, “Today is the saddest day for Ladakh and for me personally… Our previous peaceful efforts seem overshadowed by recent violence.”

The developments in Ladakh highlight the continuing struggle over regional identity and governance, underscoring the need for peaceful dialogue moving forward. While the curfew continues, local authorities remain vigilant, preparing to manage any further unrest.
