Commonwealth Games 2022: Boxers Amit Panghal, Nitu Ghanghas strike gold

Birmingham, August 7: Indian boxers Nitu Ghanghas won the women’s 48kg Commonwealth Games title before Amit Panghal (men’s 51kg) joined her on the top of the podium, here on Sunday.
Panghal bettered his silver from the last edition as he out-punched European Championship silver medallist England’s Kiaran MacDonald by a 5-0 verdict in the men’s flyweight.
Nitu, on the other hand, upstaged 2019 world championships bronze medallist Demie-Jade Resztan of England by a 5-0 unanimous verdict.

Despite the height disadvantage, Asian Games gold medallist Panghal was the far better pugilist among the two.
But MacDonald upped the ante in the final round despite managing a nasty cut.
The first Indian boxer to take the ring, the 21-year-old Nitu, competing in her first CWG, looked completely in control throughout the nine minutes, giving the home boxer no chance.
The Southpaw continued to dazzle in the ring as she threw sharp, accurate combination of punches and controlled the pace of the contest. (AGENCIES)

Commonwealth Games 2022: Indian women’s hockey team wins bronze

BIRMINGHAM, AUGUST 7: The Indian women’s hockey team beat defending champions New Zealand 2-1 in shootout to win the bronze medal and finish its campaign at the Commonwealth Games on a high note in BIrmingham on August 7, 2022.
Leading 1-0, India conceded a penalty corner with less than 30 seconds to go for the final hooter, as the match went into shootout after Olivia Merry’s equaliser.
India though held their nerves in the shootout to emerge winners.
Coming off their heartbreaking loss to Australia in a controversial semifinal, India showed the intent to wrap up their campaign with a win and earn a podium finish.
Salima Tete’s goal gave India the lead and they led 1-0 at half time, paving the way for an entertaining second half.
Neha Goyal almost doubled the lead after the break, but good defending by New Zealand prevented the Indians from consolidating their position.
New Zealand have had to do a lot of defending and they’ve done quite well to remain disciplined until that Tete’s goal. (Agencies)

Amid decline in arrival of devotees, Amarnath yatra remains suspended from Jammu

0

JAMMU, Aug 7: The Amarnath yatra remained suspended from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp here for the second day on Sunday owing to a sharp decline in the arrival of pilgrims, officials said.
However, a fresh batch of 378 pilgrims left the base camp to pay obeisance at the shrine of Buddha Amarnath in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, they added.
The 43-day annual pilgrimage to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine commenced on June 30 from the twin routes — the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag and the 14-km shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal — and is scheduled to end on August 11 on the occasion of ”Shravan Purnima” coinciding with ”Raksha Bandhan”.
”The Amarnath yatra remained suspended from Jammu due to the non-availability of adequate number of pilgrims…. We might send one more batch before the culmination of the yatra, depending on the availability of pilgrims,” an official said.
The officials said the Bhagwati Nagar base camp is wearing a deserted look for the last few days, prompting the community kitchen operators to wind up their services.
On August 2, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had appealed to the pilgrims to visit the cave shrine before August 5 in view of a forecast of inclement weather and more rains after that.
Nearly three lakh pilgrims visited the cave shrine, housing a naturally formed ice-shivling, this year.
Meanwhile, the 11-day Buddha Amarnath pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 8 with the departure of the ”Chari Mubarak” from Shri Dashnami Akhara in Poonch.
There were 90 women and two children in the fresh batch of pilgrims that left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp on Sunday morning, the officials said.
They said the pilgrimage is progressing smoothly and thousands of devotees have so far visited the shrine since the commencement of the yatra on July 29. (Agencies)

Avinash Sable, the man who beat a Kenyan in 3000m steeplechase at Commonwealth Games

As he walked through the mixed zone at the Alexander Stadium here, Kenya’s 3000m gold medallist Abraham Kibiwot was asked whether he ever felt under pressure from the young Indian who was giving him the chase.

“I know the guy who was following me (silver medallist Avinash Sable of India) and I know he is not that fast. I was not afraid of him so that is why I controlled the race at the front,” Kibiwot said.

Well, Kibiwot may put up a brave face but to all those who watched the race, it was clear that the Kenyan had his heart in his mouth as he realised that Sable was bearing down at him with a brilliant late kick and was virtually on his shoulder as he crossed the finish line just a fraction of seconds ahead to claim the gold medal.

Kibiwot is a very experienced racer having won the silver medal in 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and has represented his country in the World Championships too.

He finished the race at 8:11.15 while Sable crossed the line in 8:11.20 a new national record for Sable and his personal best. The Armyman from the Beed district of Maharashtra was expected to be an also-ran in the race dominated by the Kenyans since 1994.

But on Saturday, Sable was not bothered by the reputation nor the number of Kenyans in the race (there were three) and ran his own race. 2018 Commonwealth Games 3000m steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya, the Rio 2016 Olympic Games gold medallist and a two times World Champion, finished sixth and was effusive in praise for the way Sable upstaged them to win the silver medal.

Indeed, Sable was awesome on Saturday as he became the first non-Kenyan to win a medal in the 3000m steeplechase at the Commonwealth Games since 1994. The Kenyans have won every steeplechase race at the last 10 CWG editions, claiming all the spots on the podium. Sable entered the Kenyan bastion and came out with a silver medal.

He also set a national record with a timing of 8:11.20, which is his personal best, finishing second behind Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot, who took gold at 8:11.15, nearly ending the race in a photo finish as he tapped into some unknown reserves of energy to produce a brilliant kick, literally finishing on the heels of Kibiwot. Kenya’s Amos Serem won the bronze medal in 8:16.83 seconds.

Though he claimed the silver, Sable was not happy with his last lap and said it could have been better.

“My last lap was a bit disappointing, but I’m really happy because it is a long (time) since India won a long-distance medal,” he later told the reporters.

Sable completed his first 1000m in 2 minutes, 40.5 seconds and the second in 2:47.2 while the third too was slightly slower at 2:43.4.

Though Sable said he was a bit disappointed with his last lap, he did make history on Saturday.

To beat one Kenyan in 3000m steeplechase is very difficult, Avinash Sable on Saturday got the better of two runners from that country to win a silver medal. The enormity of his achievement soon dawns on him. But considering how down-to-earth he is, the 27-year-old will just take this achievement in his stride as he prepares for his biggest dream — a medal at the Olympic Games.

India should use small modular reactors to meet energy demands: NITI Aayog member V. K. Saraswat

NEW DELHI, Aug 7: NITI Aayog member and scientist V. K. Saraswat on Sunday suggested that the government should focus on setting up small modular reactors as it would help meet India’s energy needs and also in replacing aging thermal power plants.
Saraswat also said nuclear power plant projects which have been set up under the fleet mode production, should be accelerated, so that India is able to meet base load requirements at the earliest.
“We are suggesting that in future we should go for small modular reactors which will be able to meet this (energy) requirements in a distributed manner.”
“And we are also thinking that it will be the best approach for replacing the aging thermal power plants,” he said in an interview.
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are advanced nuclear reactors that have a power capacity of up to 300 MW(e) per unit, which is about one-third of the generating capacity of traditional nuclear power reactors.
Under the fleet mode, a nuclear power plant is expected to be built over a period of five years from the first pour of concrete.
According to Saraswat, the advantage of an advanced modular reactor is that it is factory fabricated and can be operated by any agency and there could also be a larger participation of the private sector in that.
Currently, India operates 22 reactors with a total capacity of 6,780 MW in operation.
Last year in December, Minister of State in the Department of Space and Department of Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh had said the share of nuclear power in the total electricity generation in the country was about 3.1 per cent in 2020-21.
“The net-zero targets are expected to be met through a combination of various clean energy sources, including nuclear power. In this context, the present nuclear power capacity of 6,780 MW is planned to be increased to 22,480 MW by 2031 on progressive completion of projects under construction and accorded sanction. More nuclear power reactors are planned in future,” Singh had said.
Replying to a question on India’s energy security, Saraswat, a former chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation said, ”Our energy security per se has improved drastically as we are not an energy starved nation any more.”
He asserted that today India is meeting all its energy demands domestically.
“As far as power generation is concerned, we are better off. We have solar power, which is almost the cheapest in the world…And the cost of setting up a solar plant has come down,” Saraswat noted.
Asked to respond to Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s allegation that the Centre is forcing states to import coal for thermal power stations, Sarasawat said these statements need scrutiny.
“Coal import is going on, in case of coastal power plants. It is cheaper for coastal power plants to import coal compared to transporting across states for example from Odisha to down south in Karnataka,” he argued.
Asserting that coal has been made available to all thermal power plants, Saraswat said, “Landlocked states which already have thermal power plants, are supplied coal even when loads have gone up.” For example, he recalled that during this summer, the loads peaked up and there was hue and cry over coal availability for power plants.
“And by working with the Railways in tandem, we were able to provide coal (to power plants across states). So managing, what is called increased demand has been done in a very efficient manner,” Saraswat said.
Recently, Rao had alleged that the BJP-led NDA government is corrupt, and the government at the Centre would be replaced and there would be inquiry on the ‘misdeeds’ such as coal import pressure on states. (Agencies)

Restrictions in Srinagar city areas to thwart Muhurram processions

0

SRINAGAR, Aug 7: Authorities on Sunday imposed curfew-like restrictions in the city to prevent members of the Shia community from taking out Muharram processions to mark the eighth day of the 10-day mourning period, officials said.
They said restrictions on the movement and assembly of people have been imposed in several areas of the Srinagar city.
The restrictions were imposed to maintain law and order in view of the eighth day of Muharram, they said.
The officials said security forces have been deployed in strength to prevent any untoward incident.
Shops and other business establishments in the areas, where restrictions are in place, were shut, while public transport was off the roads, they said.
District authorities decided that processions related to Muharram on Guru Bazar towards Buchwara and Abi Guzar towards Zadibal routes respectively will not be allowed keeping in view public security and law and order, the officials said.
Citing past incidents of violence, the district magistrate, Srinagar, said law and order and security concern is the top most priority of the government keeping in view the larger public interest and safety of its citizens.
“In view of the above stated facts and circumstances read in conjunction with the reports of intelligence agencies thereof, more particularly the security concerns of district Srinagar with respect to Muharram, the processions therein cannot be allowed on Gurubazar toward Buchwara and Abi-Guzar towards Zadibal routes respectively, keeping in mind public interest, law and order and security,” the order said.
It said it has been witnessed from past instances and upon analysis of reports and data from different security agencies with regard to incidents which have occurred during Muharram, “it is evident that not only there has been breach in peace and law and order, but also there have been sectarian clashes which have resulted in breach of peace and threat to maintenance of law and order and also resulted in damage to public property and injuries to civilians and security forces as well”.
The district magistrate said that alternate routes for conducting Muharram processions have already been provided to perform the ceremonies peacefully.
He warned that in case of violation, security agencies will take cognisance of the matter under the law.
The traditional Muharram procession, to mark the eighth day of Muharram mourning period, used to pass through these areas, but have been banned since the eruption of militancy in 1990, as authorities maintain that the gatherings have been used for propagating separatist politics. (Agencies)
