Nine Candidates Nominate for Four Rajya Sabha Seats in J&K

0

The political landscape in Jammu and Kashmir intensifies as nine candidates file nominations for the four Rajya Sabha seats available, with the ruling National Conference (NC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vying for dominance. The nominations came in before the Returning Officer, Manoj Pandita, Secretary of the Assembly, today.

Among the first notifications, Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan of the NC and Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir of the BJP, alongside independent candidate Prabhakar Dada, have thrown their hats in for one available seat. The NC-led coalition, commanding a total of 53 MLAs, positions Ramzan as the likely winner without needing support from allies like the Congress, which holds 26 MLAs.

In the race for a second seat under the same notification, Sajad Kichloo from the NC and Rakesh Mahajan from the BJP have also submitted nominations. Based on the prevailing voting patterns, Kichloo appears to be another strong contender for victory.

This nomination process advances into the third notification stage, where two seats are open. NC candidates Gurwinder Singh Oberoi (alias Shammi Oberoi) and Imran Dar, alongside BJP candidate Sat Pal Sharma and independent Kante Sayanna, have entered the contest. Observers predict that the two candidates with the highest votes will take these seats. The NC coalition expects to allocate 29 votes to Oberoi and 24 to Dar, while Sharma is anticipated to garner all 28 votes from BJP legislators.

After filing his nomination, BJP candidate Rakesh Mahajan expressed gratitude towards the party leadership and conveyed his optimism about the results. “I am thankful to the national leadership for this honour. I am sure we will win all three seats,” he noted, emphasizing the inclusive opportunities provided by the BJP.

Sat Sharma, the BJP president and candidate, also took the opportunity to critique the ruling NC, asserting the BJP’s commitment to pursuing more than one seat this election cycle. “We will fight with all our strength and script history,” Sharma proclaimed.

Dr. Ali Muhammad Mir, another BJP nominee, conveyed his appreciation for being trusted with party representation. “Entire Kashmir is happy. I thank the central leadership for considering me competent for this responsibility,” he remarked.

On the part of NC, chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq confirmed that the nomination process proceeded smoothly. “We are confident of winning all four seats. However, it is unfortunate that Congress did not agree to what was offered. I urge all secular forces to support our candidates,” Sadiq stated, reflecting on the necessity of unity among progressive groups.

Senior NC leader Choudhary Muhammad Ramzan, competing for the Rajya Sabha seat, highlighted his commitment to address pressing developmental and political issues in Parliament. “We will come up to people’s expectations. There are a number of issues — developmental and political — that must be addressed, and we will talk about them,” he assured stakeholders.

The eagerly anticipated elections for the four Rajya Sabha seats from Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled for later this month, promising to shape the political future on several fronts.

Sonia Gandhi Unveils Statue Of Ex-Himachal CM Virbhadra Singh In Shimla

0

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Monday unveiled a statue of six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh, at Daulat Singh Park on the historic Ridge Ground in Shimla.

Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) chairperson Gandhi, accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, paid floral tributes to the late leader after inaugurating the statue.

The six-foot-tall bronze statue is placed near statues of notable leaders such as YS Parmar, the first chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Mahatma Gandhi and former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

There was a huge turnout at the event and police have beefed up security measures.

A company linked to renowned sculptor Ram V Sutar and his son Anil Ram Sutar built the statue at Rs 40 lakh — Rs 24 lakh for construction and Rs 16 lakh for installation. Ram Sutar was also behind the 182-ft Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue built to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Scion of the Rampur-Bushahr royal family, Virbhadra Singh first took office as chief minister on April 8, 1983 and spent the next four decades in public life, becoming the CM five more times. He died in 2021 after a prolonged illness.

His wife, Pratibha Singh, is the state party chief and his son, Vikramaditya Singh, is the Public Works Minister in the Himachal Pradesh government.

The statue unveiling and a rally that followed, were organised by Vikramaditya Singh, who is also the chairman of the Raja Virbhadra Singh Foundation.

The Congress’s state in charge, Rajni Patil, cabinet ministers of the state and Congress leader Rajiv Shukla also attended the statue unveiling. (AGENCIES)

Two-Way Movement For Heavy Vehicles On Jammu-Srinagar NH Restored

0

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has successfully restored two-way traffic movement for heavy motor vehicles on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, ensuring seamless transportation of essential commodities and fruit-laden trucks from the Valley to markets outside, officials said.

The 250-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was on August 26 blocked by multiple landslides and road sinking at several locations, particularly at Tharad Bridge and Balli Nallah in Udhampur district, and Maroog in Ramban district, they said.

Traffic movement on the highway had been severely disrupted following heavy rainfall, flash floods, and cloudbursts during August and September, the officials added.

The highway was disrupted on August 26 and restored for one-way traffic on September 10 after NHAI swiftly mobilized men and machinery to restore connectivity on a war footing, they said.

“Following sustained efforts, the damaged stretches were repaired and blacktopped. The most affected and vulnerable portion near Tharad, between Udhampur and Chenani, approximately 300 meters in length, was fully blacktopped on October 5, ensuring smooth passage for both HMVs and LMVs,” a NHAI official said.

The official said the restoration now enables two-way movement of all types of vehicles, reducing congestion and ensuring uninterrupted flow of traffic along the critical Lakhanpur–Jammu–Srinagar corridor.

“NHAI also requested the local administration on October 9 to resume two-way movement of all types of vehicles on the Lakhanpur–Jammu–Srinagar Highway to ensure smooth traffic flow and avoid congestion along the route,” the official added.

NHAI remains fully committed to maintaining the operational efficiency of the highway, which serves as the lifeline of Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, especially during the ongoing fruit season, they said.

“Regular monitoring and maintenance teams have been deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth and safe travel for all road users,” a NHAI spokesperson said. (Agencies)

Nisa Unnirajan – The 40-Year-Old Mother Who Beat Odds and Hearing Loss to Crack UPSC

In a world where most give up after one or two failures, 40-year-old Nisa Unnirajan from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, turned her seventh attempt into a triumph — clearing one of India’s toughest exams, the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024, with an All India Rank of 1000.

A mother of two young daughters and a hearing-impaired candidate, Nisa’s story stands as a resounding testament to the power of perseverance, purpose, and self-belief.

Seven Attempts, One Dream

For Nisa, the UPSC journey wasn’t a straight road. It began when she was already well into her 30s, juggling her duties as an Assistant Audit Officer in the Accountant General’s office and managing her home and children.

“Every attempt taught me something new — about the exam and about myself,” she said in an interview after her results. “It wasn’t about competing with others anymore; it was about not giving up on myself.”

Her seventh attempt in 2024 finally brought the breakthrough she had waited nearly a decade for.

Turning Disability Into Strength

Nisa’s hearing impairment — nearly 40% hearing loss — made conventional preparation methods especially challenging. Online lectures, discussions, and mock interviews were not easy to follow.

Instead, she crafted her own strategy: reading intensively, summarizing newspaper editorials, and revising notes during every free moment — from office breaks to late nights after putting her children to sleep.

“I had to find my rhythm. I couldn’t hear everything, but I could understand and retain what I read deeply,” she shared.

Her discipline and quiet determination soon turned her limitation into a form of strength — sharpening her concentration and focus.

Balancing Roles: Officer, Mother, and Dreamer

Between office deadlines and parenting duties, Nisa’s study schedule often began after midnight. Her husband and parents played a crucial role in supporting her dream — managing household responsibilities and encouraging her to keep trying.

Her daughters, Nandana and Thanvi, often studied beside her, unaware that their mother was chasing one of India’s most competitive dreams. “I wanted them to see that persistence matters — that even failure can be part of success,” she said.

Inspiration and Impact

Her achievement has inspired thousands across India, especially women who believe that age, family responsibilities, or physical challenges limit their aspirations.

Even Shashi Tharoor, MP from Thiruvananthapuram, took to social media to celebrate her journey, writing:

“It’s never too late — an inspiring story! A 40-year-old disabled mother from Thiruvananthapuram cracked the IAS while raising two kids.”

Her success has become a beacon for differently-abled aspirants and late starters who dream of a place in the country’s top civil services.

A New Chapter Begins

With her selection, Nisa Unnirajan is set to enter the Indian Administrative Service under the hearing-impaired quota. But beyond the rank and the title, her story speaks to something larger — the victory of resilience over circumstance.

In her own words:

“There were days I doubted everything. But every time I thought of giving up, I remembered why I started.”

For thousands of UPSC aspirants across the nation, that reminder might be all they need to keep going.
