Delhi, Aug 2: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken a significant step by eliminating 2,181 positions across its 14 departments. This move follows an independent audit conducted by the multinational company EY (formerly Ernst & Young), as reported by the Hindustan Times.
According to the audit findings, the total number of posts in the MCD has decreased from 147,172 to 144,991, effective from July 1 this year. However, it is essential to note that these cut positions will not lead to any lay-offs. Instead, the changes will be reflected in the next round of recruitment. The decision to conduct an independent study was to streamline the executive wing after unification.
EY engaged in exhaustive consultations with various departments, as stated in the report presented by Delhi Muncipal Corporation Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti to the civic body’s elected wing. While three departments, namely assessment and collection, DEMS (sanitation), and hospital administration, requested a minor increase in posts, several others, including education, IT, land and estate, toll tax, and veterinary department, found their current posts to be adequate for the existing workload. As a result, 2,181 posts were deemed surplus and were eliminated from 14 departments.
Mukesh Goyal, the leader of the Aam Aadmi Party in the house, informed that the proposal had been approved by the house. However, the legal implications of certain changes will be examined closely.
On the other hand, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, expressed discontent with the lack of open discussion on the restructuring of the civic body in the house. Sehrawat accused AAP of creating distractions by raising unrelated issues, as reported by Hindustan Times. He emphasized the need for open debates and consultations with the executive wing before agreeing to such changes.
Before the unification in May 2022, the North, South, and East MCDs collectively held 150,557 posts. The recent decision to streamline and reduce positions indicates the MCD’s commitment to optimizing efficiency and resource allocation within its departments. With no lay-offs expected, the corporation aims to maintain its workforce while enhancing operational effectiveness
