Only Cong can challenge BJP in Gujarat, Himachal: Azad
Srinagar, November 7 :
Former Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Sunday said only the Congress could challenge the BJP in Gujarat and Himachal elections.
“AAP is merely a party of Delhi,” he said. Months after quitting the party, Azad said he was not against its policy of secularism, but its “weak party system”. “I would still want the Congress to perform well in Gujarat and HP. AAP can’t do anything in these states. They have failed in Punjab and Punjabis will not vote for them again,” he said. Azad is scheduled to address many rallies in Doda.
He had quit the Congress on August 26.
Polls ahead, UT BJP leaders in HP for rallies
Jammu, November 7:
With most of the BJP leaders from J&K camping in the neighboring poll-bound Himachal Pradesh, political activities of the saffron party have almost come to a halt in the UT. Elections in Himachal are scheduled on November 12 for which many former MLAs, ministers and MPs not only from J&K but also from Ladakh are camping in the hill state. As Himachal shares its border with both J&K and Ladakh, there are many cultural similarities and relations between people.
Devendra Singh Rana, senior J&K BJP leader, has been already made election co-incharge for Himachal.
From Union Minister Jitendra Singh, MP from Udhampur constituency, to former Deputy CMs Kavinder Gupta and Nirmal Singh among many former ministers of J&K, leaders are frequenting the hill state where the BJP is leaving no stone unturned to retain the power.
Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for Science and Technology, recently held a rally in Chamba and inaugurated a science museum in the district. Kavinder Gupta visited Mandi district and claimed that the development during the BJP regime in the state was far ahead than what previous governments did. Former minister Priya Sethi also visited Dalhousie and addressed a rally.
Earlier, most of these leaders had been touring different parts of Jammu to highlight the “development activities” taken up by the BJP-led Central Government in the UT since the abrogation of Article 370.
“Elections in Himachal are being taken very seriously by the party high command and leaders have been asked to tour each and every part of the state due to which most of the Jammu leaders are busy,” said a senior party leader.
He said the result of the Himachal election could impact that of the J&K Assembly poll, likely to be held early next year, due to which Himachal Pradesh has become an important task for Jammu leaders.Ladakh MP Jamyang Tsering Namgyal also visited Lahaul-Spiti district. He interacted with local populace and visited Kaza Gonpa and Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Demul, Lidhang, Lara, Shego and Nashung villages in Spiti valley. Lahaul-Spiti shares its border with Ladakh.
Mughal road shut after snowfall
Jammu, November :
Heavy snowfall on higher reaches of J&K left the vital Mughal road and the Srinagar-Leh National Highway shut on Sunday. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) worked for nearly five hours after which the traffic on the Srinagar-Leh highway was thrown open but the Mughal road remained blocked.
Snowfall on higher reaches and rain in plains of the UT was witnessed throughout the night intervening Saturday and Sunday. The Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road, connecting Kashmir with Ladakh meandering through the high mountainous pass of Zojila, was also covered under snow due to which authorities stopped the traffic from both the sides.
The Meteorological centre in Srinagar issued an advisory to the farmers, asking them to harvest the agriculture and horticulture produce as these are vulnerable to snowfall and low temperature. The weatherman also advised the travellers to know the status of the road from the traffic police before taking up any journey in the region.
The MeT centre has predicted moderate rain and snow over higher reaches at most places of J&K on November 7. “Plains of Kashmir, mainly south, will receive snowfall. Heavy snowfall is very likely over higher reaches,” it said.
Meanwhile, the police said the traffic was smooth on the Jammu-Srinagar highway. On the other hand, after the closure for nearly five hours, the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road (on Srinagar-Leh NH) was thrown open for vehicular movement.
Electricity supply in parts of Jammu region was also affected due to heavy rainfall throughout the night. Power was restored in most of the areas by Sunday morning.
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra to enter Maharashtra today
After completion of the 60-day foot march covering all the southern states, Congress’ Bharat Jodo Yatra led by party leader Rahul Gandhi will enter Maharashtra on Monday.
The yatra, which has already covered parts of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana will now enter Maharashtra on Monday evening at Madnur Naka in Degloor of Nanded district.
As per reports, Maharashtra Congress Committee has made elaborate arrangements regarding the entry and yatra. They are trying to get massive success in Maharashtra too.
Rahul Gandhi and other congress delegations are expected to start the march around 10 pm with a torch and Ekta Mashal.
During his 14-day journey in the State, the former Congress president will walk about 381 km covering 15 Assembly and six parliamentary constituencies. Nationalist Congress Party supremo Sharad Pawar will also join the yatra on November 8, making space for a massive outreach.
However, due to ongoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, Pawar will only walk less than a mile.
Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray and former minister Aaditya Thackeray are yet to confirm their schedule; both are expected to join Rahul Gandhi in his yatra. Arvind Sawant and Manisha Kayande will also join the yatra from Udhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction of Shiv Sena.
Many big congress names will be joining the Bharat Jodo Yatra including Nana Patole, Balasaheb Thorat, Bhaijagtap, Ashok Chavan and others.
Bharat Jodo Yatra, which commenced on September 7 from Kanyakumari, will cover a further distance of 2,355 km in its 3,570-km march. It will end in Kashmir next year. It is the longest march on foot by any Indian politician in the history of India, the Congress claimed earlier in a statement.
The Congress got through a debacle in the assembly polls held earlier this year and the Yatra is seen as an attempt to rally the party rank and file for the forthcoming electoral battles.
