Melbourne, Nov 14: Tournament’s leading run-getters Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav were on Monday named in the “Most Valuable Team” of ICC 2022 T20 World Cup.
Indian superstar Kohli ended as the tournament’s most prolific batter with 296 runs at a stunning average of 98.66.
Kohli kick-started his campaign with a pivotal 82 not out against arch-rivals Pakistan to anchor his side to a heart-thumping final-ball four-wicket victory.
And further knocks of 64 not out against Bangladesh, 62 not out against the Netherlands, and 50 against England in the semi-finals helped round off an individual competition to savour for one of the greatest white-ball batters of the modern era.
Fellow Indian Suryakumar finished as the tournament’s third highest run-scorer with 239 runs overall.
Three half-centuries— 51 not out against the Netherlands in Sydney, 68 against South Africa in Perth, and 61 not out off just 25 balls against Zimbabwe in Melbourne— helped haul his side into the semi-finals as he scored at a staggering strike rate of 189.68 in his six innings.
Another Indian, Hardik Pandya was named as the 12th man of the side.
“Players from six different teams have been named in the Upstox Most Valuable Team of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022,” the ICC said in a statement a day after England won their second world title in the shortest format.
Captain, wicketkeeper, and opening batter Jos Buttler, fellow opener Alex Hales, and seamer Sam Curran all made the cut for England.
New Zealand star Glenn Phillips and Zimbabwe ace Sikandar Raza occupy the No.5 and 6 positions in the playing eleven. Phillips’ stunning century against Sri Lanka catapulted his team to a comfortable 65-run victory in Sydney.
Another innings of 62 against England helped him reach a total of 201 runs at an average of 40.20.
For Raza, 219 runs and 10 wickets, proved pivotal assets for Zimbabwe with both bat and ball.
He scored a polished 82 off his 48 balls in his country’s opening game against Ireland in Hobart, before further batting contributions against Scotland, Netherlands, and India— bolstered by a brilliant three for 25 as Zimbabwe stunned Pakistan in Perth— rounded off a tournament to remember.
Completing the middle order is Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan, who grabbed an impressive 11 wickets at an average of just 15.00.
And he was similarly impressed with the bat, striking a solid 92 runs at an average of 24.50 to help fire his side to the final in Melbourne.
Sam Curran and Anrich Nortje line up at No.8 and 9, with the former being crowned Player of the Tournament after a series of spellbinding bowling displays.
The left-arm seamer claimed remarkable figures of 3 for 12 off his four overs in the final after getting his tournament underway with a similarly scintillating five for 10 against Afghanistan.
Another bowler who starred was pace ace Nortje, who functioned as a vital weapon in South Africa’s armoury after finishing with a tournament-best average of just 8.54.
Nortje conceded just 94 runs while in the process of taking his 11 wickets as four scalps against both Bangladesh and Pakistan helped him become one of the competition’s most fearsome bowlers.
Rounding off the side at No.10 and 11 are fellow pace bowlers Mark Wood and Shaheen Shah Afridi, who took nine and 11 wickets respectively for England and Pakistan.
Despite being ruled out of the semi-finals and final through injury, Wood’s consistency throughout the Super 12s— spearheaded by three wickets against Afghanistan and Ireland— saw him finish the tournament with an average of just 12.00.
And for Afridi, who also suffered an unfortunate injury in Sunday’s final, his figures of four for 22 against Bangladesh and three for 14 against South Africa helped him emulate his new-ball heroics in last year’s tournament as Pakistan were narrowly denied in Melbourne.
Taking his place as the 12th man is Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who starred with both bat and ball by racking up 128 runs and eight wickets.
The dangerous middle-order ace blasted 63 against England in the semi-finals after also taking key wickets against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe throughout the Super 12s.

Srinagar-Leh highway, Mughal road closed amid rain, snowfall
Srinagar/Jammu, Nov 14: Snowfall on Monday forced the closure of Srinagar-Leh highway as well as historic Mughal road, connecting twin districts of Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian.
A traffic department official said that Srinagar-leh Highway was closed amid snowfall around areas of Sonamarg.
DySP Traffic Rajouri-Poonch Range Aftab Bukhari said that the historic Mughal road was closed following snowfall in Pir Ki Gali and other areas along the thoroughfare.
Meanwhile, Jammu-Srinagar was through for the traffic when this report was filed. Sources said that it was raining at several places along the thoroughfare.
“Traffic plying on Jammu-Srinagar Highway. Mughal road & SSG road closed for vehicular movement due the fresh snowfall,” traffic Police said in a tweet also. (Agencies)
J&K police finds another airplane shaped balloon with BHN, Emirates written on it
JAMMU, Nov 14: Jammu and Kashmir police found an aircraft-shaped balloon with the letters BHN and Emirates written on it, on Jammu-Pathankot National Highway. The incident was reported on Sunday morning in the vicinity of Indo Pakistan Border. Similar airplane-shaped ballons were retrieved at different locations earlier along the International Border in the Nadd area of Jammu’s Samba district. Meanwhile, some other balloons found in the past had ‘PIA’ written on them which stands for Pakistan International Airlines along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as along the International Border.
The balloon recovered by the Jammu and Kashmir police on Nov 13 was of green and white colour. It depicted the crescent moon and star that symbolises the Pakistani flag printed on it. BHN and emirates were written on the balloon with text in the Urdu language that translates to “Emirates.” The police received the information about the suspicious balloon hovering in the area and responded to the scene immediately. A probe was launched into the matter to ascertain more details. The balloon apparently landed close to the Indo-Pak border. But such incidents have been significantly recurring on the International Border and the Line of Control (LoC) over the past several months. (Agencies)
Tremors felt as 4.1 magnitude earthquake hits Punjab’s Amritsar
AMRITSAR, Nov 14: An earthquake of 4.1 magnitude was felt across Punjab’s Amritsar on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, informed National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors were felt at around 3:42 a.m.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said, “Earthquake of Magnitude:4.1, Occurred on 14-11-2022, 03:42:27 IST, Lat: 31.95 & Long: 73.38, Depth: 120 Km, Location: 145km WNW of Amritsar, Punjab.
“Earlier on Saturday evening, an earthquake rocked Delhi-NCR. The tremors were felt at around 8 p.m. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) said an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred in Nepal, at around 7:57 p.m. on Saturday. “The depth of the earthquake was 10 km below the ground,” it had said. PM to discuss issues of global concerns at G20 summit in Bali
New Delhi, Nov 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that he will have bilateral discussions with G20 leaders during the upcoming summit in Bali on issues of global concerns like food and energy security, health and environment among others.
In his statement before departing for Bali to participate in the summit, Modi said, “I will be visiting Bali, Indonesia on 14-16 November 2022, to participate in the 17th G20 Leaders’ Summit, to be chaired by Indonesia. I will have extensive discussions with other G20 leaders on key issues of global concern, such as reviving global growth, food & energy security, environment, health, and digital transformation.”
The Prime Minister further said that on the sidelines of the G20 summit, he will meet with leaders of several other participating countries and review the progress in India’s bilateral relations with them.
“In a significant moment for our country and citizens, President of Indonesia Joko Widodo will hand over the G20 Presidency to India at the closing ceremony of the Bali Summit. India will officially assume the G20 Presidency from 1st December 2022. I will also extend my personal invitation to G20 Members and other invitees to our G20 Summit next year,” he added.
Prime Minister Modi further informed that during his interaction at the G20 summit, he will highlight India’s achievements and it’s unwavering commitment to collectively address global challenges.
Blast in Istanbul likely act of terror: President
Istanbul, Nov 14: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the blast that hit Istanbul on Sunday was likely an act of terror.
“Although it is too early to confirm 100 per cent, initial reports and information from the governor’s office show (the blast) smells like terror,” Erdogan said at a press conference in Istanbul before heading to Indonesia for the G20 summit.
“It looks like a single woman had a role in it,” added the President, noting a full-scale investigation was underway, Xinhua news agency reported.
Earlier, reacting to the blast, Erdogan has said that the security and health units were sent to the scene of the incident, and the wounded were quickly transferred to the surrounding hospitals. He also asserted that efforts to take over Turkey through terrorism will not work.
India conveyed its condolences to the Turkish government and people following the blast.
India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi in a tweet said, “India conveys its deepest condolences to the Government and people of Turkiye on the tragic loss of lives in the blast that took place in Istanbul today. Our sympathies are also with those who sustained injuries. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
An explosion hit the busy pedestrian Istiklal avenue on the European side of the city at 4:20 p.m. local time, killing at least six people and wounding 53 others.
The blast caused severe panic in the city, particularly in the historic Beyoglu district where loud sound rippled through.
A large number of health personnel arrived at the scene to tend to the wounded, and the police are now on high alert.

Twitter suspends $8 subscription program after fake accounts propagate
New York: Twitter Inc. suspended the $8 subscription program it launched earlier this week to combat a growing problem of users impersonating major brands, a person familiar with the move said.
As per the media reports, existing subscribers will still have access to their account, said the person who asked not to be identified because the information is private.
The company has also reinstated “official” badges for high-profile accounts, with the gray badge reappearing below the profiles of businesses and major media outlets Friday based on an internal approved list, according to the person. The identification marker was rolled out earlier this week before being scrapped.
Twitter is struggling with impostor accounts since the company allowed paying subscribers to get verified blue check marks. One account claiming to be Nintendo Inc. posted an image of Super Mario holding up a middle finger, while another posing as pharma giant Eli Lilly & Co. tweeted that insulin was now free — forcing the company to issue an apology. A purported Tesla Inc. account joked about the carmaker’s safety record.
“To combat impersonation, we’ve added an ‘Official’ label to some accounts,” Twitter Support tweeted on Friday.
Elon Musk tweeted the same day that all accounts engaged in parody must include “parody” in their name.
Supreme Court seeks details about Ukraine returned medical students
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India asked the Centre to provide details of those medical students of Ukraine who availed its academic mobility programme under which they could complete their courses in Universities or Colleges of other countries.
The Centre said it cannot accommodate the medical students studying in Universities of Ukraine, who have returned to the country due to war there, in Indian Medical Institutes or Universities as it “would disrupt the entire medical education system” here.
A bench of justices Aniruddha Bose and Vikram Nath on Friday asked Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, to file an affidavit specifying the details of the number of medical students who have been accommodated in third countries and how the scheme was progressing.
The top court was hearing a batch of petitions filed by undergraduate medical students of first to fourth-year batches in their respective foreign medical colleges/universities. These students are primarily seeking transfer to medical colleges in India in their respective semesters.
LG Sinha sets ‘Top 20’ target for NIT Srinagar

Citing the multifold increase registered in acquiring patents by the IITs of the country, the Lt Governor called for setting a target of patent registration every year to promote innovation. We must build the institutional infrastructure to scale-up research, ideas for new services and invest in human capacity, he added.
The Lt Governor asked the faculty and the administration of the NIT Srinagar to make every effort to include NIT in the top 20 institutions of the country and develop this prestigious institute as one of the best institutes in the country keeping in mind the civilisational values, he added.
Observing that the power of innovation can help the society to flourish, the Lt Governor entrusted upon the technical institutes to strive to re-invent the incubation and innovation centres to better meet the expectations of society.
In-house innovative solutions play an important role in critical areas like security, technical & healthcare for ease of living. Our Education Campuses should encourage and nurture curiosity, motivate students for research and provide empowerment and space for experimentation.
The Lt Governor also congratulated the concerned faculties and Director NIT Srinagar for the ongoing cotton industry and space application projects with Russia and Uzbekistan.
Dr. Rakesh Sehgal, Director NIT, in his address said that improvement in rankings over the last three years has been made possible due to support provided by the government.
