The J&K Industries and Commerce Department has issued cancellation notice to the 586 allottees of land under the industrial development scheme for not setting up their units. The allottees have failed to deposit the land premium and execute lease deed. If they fail to respond to the notice, their allotments will be cancelled, an official said. The step has been taken to provide opportunity to others in the queue.

The administration had in January 2021 announced the new industrial development scheme (IDS) with a total outlay of Rs 28,400 crore to encourage new investments. The land to these 586 investors was allotted by the State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO) and the Small Scale Industrial Development Corporation (SICOP) at different locations across Jammu and Kashmir.

J&K SIDCO Managing Director Smita Sethi said, “There are 4,500 applications in queue for grant of allotment for setting up units in J&K.” If the existing allottees don’t respond, there are others in the queue, she added.

Editors Guild expresses concern at recent threats to journalists in Kashmir

0

New Delhi, November 18

The Editors Guild of India on Friday expressed concern about the recent threats issued to journalists working in Kashmir, by alleged terror organisations, and the subsequent resignations of five journalists.

In a statement, it said the journalists in Kashmir find themselves in the firing line from both the state authorities as well as terrorists. Once again, media houses had been named by terror groups warning that those associated with well-known regional papers would be declared “traitors”, it added.

According to the statement, space for media freedom and active civil society has been steadily eroding in the region. It must be recalled that the editor of Rising Kashmir, Shujaat Bukhari, was killed in June 2018. The Kashmir Press Club, which had become an important institution for fighting for the protection and rights of journalists, was shut down earlier in the year, it said.

These pronouncements by terror bodies had further worsened the sense of fear and insecurity, making it impossible for the journalists to work freely, it added.

The Guild condemned such threats and called upon the state government to create an atmosphere of security and trust, wherein the media is not compelled to take sides.

India hits back as Pakistan rakes up Jammu and Kashmir at UN

United Nations, November 18

India has slammed Pakistan after it raked the Jammu and Kashmir issue during a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on Security Council reforms, saying Islamabad’s desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods and its bad habit of abusing the sanctity of multilateral forums deserves the international community’s collective contempt.

The General Assembly held a plenary meeting on Thursday on the issue of UN Security Council reforms during which Pakistan yet again raked up the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

“I am taking the floor today to exercise India’s Right of Reply to respond to Pakistan’s continued abuse of this august Assembly,” Counsellor in India’s Permanent Mission to the UN here Pratik Mathur said.

Mathur said that while the UNGA is meeting to discuss the “extremely important” topic of UN Security Council reforms, the representative of Pakistan has yet again made “unwarranted references” to Jammu and Kashmir.

“Jammu and Kashmir, let me repeat once again for his benefit, remains an integral and inalienable part of India, irrespective of what the representative of Pakistan believes or covets. Pakistan’s desperate attempts to peddle falsehoods and a bad habit of abusing the sanctity of multilateral forums deserve our collective contempt and perhaps some sympathy as well,” Mathur said.

Earlier in the day, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj had addressed the plenary meeting, delivering a statement on behalf of the G4 nations of Brazil, Germany, India and Japan. She had asserted that the longer the Security Council reform is “stalled, the greater its deficit in representation. And representation is – an inescapable precondition for its legitimacy and effectiveness”.

The G4 nations said the Inter-Governmental Negotiations process simply cannot be allowed to cocoon itself in perpetuity without letting the collective aspirations of the member states take a definite shape. “We hope this year’s IGN process will not be another missed opportunity,” Kamboj had said.

“Even a single attack is one too many”: PM Modi at anti-terror conference

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stressed that all terrorist attacks deserve equal outrage and action and noted that the intensity of the reaction to the various attacks cannot be based on its place of occurrence.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came while addressing the third Ministerial Conference on Countering Financing of Terrorism in the national capital.

“We consider that even a single attack is one too many. Even a single life lost is one too many. So, we will not rest till terrorism is uprooted. Significant that this conference is happening in India. Our country faced horrors of terror long before world took serious note of it. Over the decades terrorism in different forms tried to hurt India but we’ve fought terrorism bravely,” he said.

The Prime Minister also underlined the need to strike at the “root of terror financing”.

“Nobody likes an area that is constantly under threat. And due to this, the livelihood of people is taken away. It is all the more important that we strike at the root of terror financing,” PM Modi said.

He said that there is no place for “ambiguous approach while dealing with a global threat” calling terrorism an attack on humanity, freedom and civilization.

“In today’s world, ideally, there should be no need for anyone to remind the world of the dangers of terrorism, However, there are still certain mistaken notions about terrorism in some circles. The intensity of the reaction to various attacks cannot be based on where it happened. All terrorist attacks deserve equal outrage and action. Further, sometimes, there are indirect arguments made in support of terrorism to block action against terrorists. There is no place for an ambiguous approach while dealing with a global threat. It is an attack on humanity, freedom and civilization,” PM Modi said.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s office (PMO) said the conference will offer a unique platform for participating nations and organizations to deliberate on the effectiveness of the current international regime on Counter Terrorism Financing as well as steps required to address emerging challenges.

The conference will build on the gains and learnings of the previous two conferences held in Paris in April 2018 and in Melbourne in November 2019. It will also work towards enhancing global cooperation to deny finances to terrorists and access to permissive jurisdictions to operate.

“It will be attended by about 450 delegates from across the world, including Ministers, Heads of Multilateral organisations and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) Heads of Delegations,” the PMO said.

During the Conference, deliberations will be held in four sessions which will focus on ‘Global Trends in Terrorism and Terrorist Financing’, ‘Use of Formal and Informal Channels of Funds for Terrorism’, ‘Emerging Technologies and Terrorist Financing’ and ‘International Co-operation to Address Challenges in Combating Terrorist Financing’.

PM Modi earlier today inaugurated the conference while Union Home Minister Amit Shah will conclude the event, conveying India’s determination in its fight against terrorism and its support systems for achieving success against it.

On Thursday, India said that confirmation from China is still awaited while Pakistan and Afghanistan are not participating in the international event.

However, a total of 78 countries and multilateral organisations, including Ministers from 20 countries, have confirmed their presence at the two-day conference being organised on November 18 and November 19 here in the national capital.
