PDP concerned over prevailing power crisis

Srinagar: Peoples Democratic Party leader and constituency incharge Habba Kadal Arif Laigaroo Sunday expressed concern over the “slack and negligent attitude” of the incumbent administration about the prevailing power crisis in Kashmir.

In a statement issued here, Laigaroo said they received several complaints about the erratic power supply and inconsistent water deliverance in the area.

“The people of Kashmir, especially those living in Srinagar city are appalled at the electric supply playing ‘hide and seek’. No power schedule is being followed by the Power Development Department here,” he said.

Laigaroo said that if the state of affairs was that awful in Srinagar city than what would be the situation in small towns, hamlets, and higher reaches of J&K.

“The incumbent administration is slumber ridden, the current situation demands action. The power crisis should be dealt with on priority basis to ensure that people don’t suffer during the winter,” he said.

Shraddha Walkar murder case: Plea in Delhi HC seeks transfer of case to CBI

A plea has been moved in the Delhi High Court seeking a transfer of investigation in the Shraddha murder case from Delhi Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The plea, which has been moved by a practising lawyer of Delhi, stated that investigation by Delhi Police, in this case, cannot be efficiently carried out due to administrative/staff paucity as well as lack of sufficient technical and scientific equipment to find out the evidence and the witness as the incident had taken place about six months back.

It further stated that the minute and sensitive details of the investigation by the Delhi Police have been revealed to the public through the media.

The presence of media and other public persons at the place of recoveries, court hearings etc. of any accused amounts to their interference with the evidence and witnesses in the present case.

It also stated that the Delhi Police have not sealed the alleged place of the incident to date which is continuously being accessed by the public and media personnel.

The plea stated that in the present case, pertaining to a heinous and sensitive offence u/s 302/201 IPC and in the same sensitive information pertaining to the Investigation regarding recoveries, evidences etc. are being leaked continuously by the Police Station Mehrauli on a daily basis jeopardizing every material evidence and witness so far gathered, it added mentioning that the alleged crime scenes and scene of recoveries are being contaminated by public persons and media personnel on a daily basis due to the unfiltered disclosure of information by the Delhi Police.

“The forensic evidence in the present case has not been preserved properly by the Delhi Police since all the alleged recoveries are being touched and accessed by different public persons and media personnel within the Mehrauli Police Station, alleged scene of crime i.e. house of the deceased, place of recoveries i.e. Mehrauli, Chhattarpur forest etc. which are clearly evident in the various news coverage of the present case,” the plea read.

Due to faulty investigation, most of the heinous crimes result in the acquittal of the accused since as per the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, 2021 only 44 per cent of murder cases result in a conviction, stated the plea.

The accused Aftab Amin Poonawalla was produced before a Delhi court through video conferencing last week, after five days of custody. The court then extended his police custody for another five days.

Aftab is accused of strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walker and chopping her body into 35 pieces.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 rattled the Indonesian capital Jakarta for several seconds on Monday, the weather and geophysics agency (BMKG) said.

The epicenter was on land in Cianjur in West Java, at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), BMKG said, adding there was no potential for a tsunami.

Some people evacuated offices in the central business district of Jakarta, while others reported feeling buildings shake and seeing furniture move, Reuters witnesses said.

Napier, Nov 21 (PTI) A drastic change in approach is need of the hour for India but question remains if the likes of Umran Malik and Sanju Samson will be tested in third and final T20 against New Zealand here on Tuesday.
India were expected to try out a bunch of players after another World Cup debacle but if the team combination for the second T20 was any indication, they seemed reluctant to start with a clean slate.
Take out the individual brilliance of Suryakumar Yadav, the team would have struggled to post 160 on Sunday, a grim reminder of its travails in the World Cup Down Under.
India’s powerplay approach has been a major concern. Rishabh Pant was tried at the top with Ishan Kishan in the second game but the move did not work. Considering Pant’s class, one can expect him to fire in the series-decider.
Samson is another batter who can make instant impact but the team did not start with him.
Going by skipper Hardik Pandya’s post match comments, the management is unlikely to make too many changes for the third T20. India lead the series 1-0 with the series opener washed out.
“I don’t know (about changes for the next game). I’d like to give everyone in the squad a chance but it’s just one more game, so it’s a bit tough,” said Hardik, who is seen as the next full captain in the shortest format.
Shubman Gill was in the running for opening too in the absence of senior players but the team went ahead with two left-handers. He is likely to get his chances only in the ODI series to follow.
Pandya is keen on having more batters who can bowl in the playing eleven and Deepak Hooda has given him one option.
However, the biggest disappointment was the non-inclusion of Umran Malik in the first game. It has been proved that there is a pressing needed for an out and out pace bowler in T20 cricket and the New Zealand series is crucial to the development of the Jammu and Kashmir-based tearaway pacer.
In Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, Malik, who played three T20s earlier this year, should be exposed to the pressure of playing a top team and given a long run.
Playing his first game in a while, Yuzvendra Chahal showed why he should be a regular in the team but fellow wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav might only get to play the ODIs.
Facing a must win scenario, New Zealand will take the field without their skipper Kane Williamson who will miss the game to due to a pre-arranged medical appointment.
In his absence, the team will rely even more on opener Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips down the order to put the opposition under pressure.
The home bowlers leaked way too many runs in the death overs and they will be looking to correct that. New Zealand will also have to find a way to stop Surya, who is in the form of his life.
“Suryakumar played an in incredible innings out there. Everyone watched in amazement, some of the shots be played. We have had a few discussions already and we will have few more tomorrow before the game around how to combat him,” said New Zealand head coach Gary Stead.

Retired Bureaucrat Arun Goel Appointed Election Commissioner

New Delhi, Nov 21: Former bureaucrat Arun Goel on Monday assumed charge of his new responsibility as an Election Commissioner.
The poll panel said Goel assumed charge this morning.
A 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, Goel took voluntary retirement on November 18. He was on Saturday appointed as an Election Commissioner.
He was to retire on December 31, 2022 after completing 60 years of age.
He has joined Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey on the poll panel.
There was a vacancy in the EC following the retirement of Sushil Chandra as CEC in May this year.
Goel was, till recently, the heavy industries secretary. He has also served in the Union Culture ministry.
His appointment comes days before Gujarat goes to two-phase polls on December one and five.
The poll panel will have its full strength when it decides the election schedule for Nagaland, Meghalaya, Tripura and Karnataka in the coming months. (Agencies)

Srinagar, Nov 21: A two-day live workshop was conducted at Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences(SKIMS),Soura by the department of CVTS in collaboration with department of cardiac surgery, Max hospital, New Delhi on complex heart diseases, a public relations officer of the Institute said on Monday.

Three patients were diagnosed with complex coronary artery disease with valvular heart disease and severe LV dysfunction.

The officer said that all the patients were successfully operated during the live workshop by Dr.  Rajesh Malhota, Prof G.N.Lone, Dr.Ratna Mallik Dr. Ab. Majeed,  Dr. Farooq Ganie, Dr. Zubair Ashraf, Dr. Nadeem-ul-Nazeer,  Dr. Haroon Naqshi  and other team members.

“The Anesthetic backup was provided by Dr. Sanjoy Kumar Majhi (Max, Hospital), Prof  Showkat Gurkoo,  Dr. Iqra Nazir (SKIMS) and their other team members,” the officer said. 

She said that the team was technically assisted by Lateef Kurpal, Firdous Ahmad, Asif Ahmad, Shameem, Meema, Mehak, Shakeela, Sabzar, Bilal, Rafia, Lekhraj, Irfan and others. 

Head CVTS informed that all the three patients were operated at the cost of approximately Rs. 1.5 lacs which is  much lower than the cost incurred in other cardiac centers of the country. 

“All the 3 patients are doing fine and will be discharged within a few days. Dr. Lone has expressed his gratitude to administration, all his team members, ministerial staff and supportive departments like cardiology, anesthesiology and others for their support during the workshop,” the PR official said.

Active Covid cases in country decline to 6,402

New Delhi, Nov 21: India logged 406 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,46,69,421, while the active cases dipped to 6,402, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.
The death toll climbed to 5,30,586 with 12 fatalities which includes 11 deaths reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.One death has been reported from Rajasthan in a span of 24 hours.
The active cases comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.80 per cent, according to the ministry website. A decrease of 87 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,32,433, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry’s website, 219.86 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23 last year. It crossed the four-crore mark on January 25 this year. (Agencies)

Kulgam, Nov 21: An ancient sculpture carved in a black stone has been recovered in Devsar village of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Sunday afternoon, an official said.
An official said that today a digging for Construction of bridge was started by JCB at Lankarpombay area of Devsar during which a black stone was spotted by some workers, who accordingly informed the police.
He said that soon after getting information, Police rushed to the spot and took the carved stone into their possession.
Meanwhile, a police official said the sculpture is carved in a black stone. “It is being handed over to the department of Archives, Archaeology & Museums, J&K Government,” he said. (KNO)

Srinagar had 3.7, Pahalgam minus 3.5 and Gulmarg minus 3.4 degrees Celsius as the minimum temperature today.

PM Modi to address rallies in Gujarat’s Surendranagar, Jabusar and Navsari today

Ahead of the Gujarat Assembly polls scheduled for next month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday will address three back-to-back Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Vijay Sankalp Sammelan rallies in the poll-bound state.

PM Modi’s first rally on the day will be in Surendranagar at 11 am, the next will be in Jabusar at 1 pm, and then in Navsari around 3 pm.

On the other side, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to hold four public meetings in Dwarka, Somnath, Junagadh and Kutchh districts of the state.

At around 11 am, Shah will address the first meeting in the Khambhaliya Assembly constituency in Dwarka district. Then at 1 pm, in Somnath at Kodinar, he will address another rally.

The other two meetings that the Home Minister will address are at 3 and 4 pm in the Mangrol Assembly constituency in Junagadh and Bhuj Assembly constituency in Kutchh respectively.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who is also a BJP’s star campaigner for the Gujarat elections, will also address a public meeting in the Mahemdavad assembly constituency.

Earlier on reaching his home state on Saturday, PM Modi held a road show in Valsad and also addressed the people.

The Prime Minister, who had four scheduled public meetings, started his campaign on Sunday from Somnath. Later he also held election rallies in Dhoraji, Amreli and Botad.
Speaking at the rally in Dhoraji, the Prime Minister took an apparent swipe at Rahul Gandhi and said that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the Congress leader walked with a woman who tried everything to derail the Narmada Project.

The Voting for the 182-member State Assembly will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. The results will be announced on December 8.
