New Delhi, Dec 7: India recorded 166 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases declined to 4,255, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The total tally of Covid cases stands at 4.46 crore (4,46,73,949).
The death toll climbed to 5,30,638 with five fatalities which includes three deaths reconciled by Kerala. One death each has been reported from Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours, the data updated at 8 am stated. The active cases comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.80 per cent, the ministry said.
A decrease of 90 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,39,056 while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent. According to the ministry’s website, 219.94 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive. India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23 last year. It crossed the four-crore mark on January 25 this year. (AGENCIES)

Pahalgam records coldest night of season as cold wave tightens grip over Kashmir
Srinagar, Dec 07: Pahalgam, a famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded coldest night of the season at minus 5.6 degree celsius.
The night temperature remained below freezing point in other parts of the Valley.
News agency Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported that in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, mercury settled at minus 3.0 degree celsius.
Gulmarg, a world famous ski-resort, recorded a low of minus 4.0 degree celsius while Kupwara and Kokernag recorded minus 1.9 and minus 3.1 degrees celsius respectively on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile, an independent weather forecaster, Faizan Arif has said a fresh Western disturbance is affecting Jammu and Kashmir from December 09.
He said under its influence light snow over plains and lower reaches and light to moderate snow over middle and higher reaches is expected from December 09 evening to December 10 evening.
Recruitment test for 1,200 police SI posts begins in J&K on Wednesday
JAMMU, Dec 7: The recruitment exam to fill 1,200 posts of Sub-Inspectors in Jammu and Kashmir Police starts in the union territory on Wednesday.
After allegations of question paper leakage surfaced up, this test was cancelled earlier this year and the investigations were handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In the ongoing investigation, the CBI has so far arrested more than a dozen people in the question paper leakage.
Those arrested include one commandant-level officer of the Border Security Force, one assistant sub-inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force, an official of the State Service Recruitment Board and two constables of the local police.
The Lieutenant Governor-led administration intervened and cancelled the previous exam immediately after its result was declared.
The fresh recruitment exam that starts on Wednesday will end on December 20 as the test has been spaced to accommodate a large number of candidates taking the exam. (AGENCIES)
‘Blast like sound’ heard at Sidhra Bridge in Jammu: SSP
Srinagar, Dec 07: Police on Wednesday said that a blast like sound was heard late evening on Tuesday near Sidhra Bridge checking point in Jammu district.
Quoting SSP Jammu Chandan Kohli, news agency GNS reported that, late evening a blast like sound was heard near Sidhra Bridge checking point.
A thorough search is being carried on the spot to verify the matter. Any further detail shall be shared accordingly.So far no injury or any damage was being reported in this incident.
Light intensity earthquake occurs in J&K
JAMMU, Dec 7: A light intensity earthquake measuring 3 on the Richter scale occurred in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
There was no report of casualty or damage to property.
Officials of the disaster management department said that an earthquake measuring 3 on the Richter scale occurred at 9.15 a.m. in the union territory.
The epicentre was in Kathua district with longitude 75.65 degrees east and latitude 32.71 degrees north.
Officials said no casualty or damage to property was reported from anywhere. (Agencies)
Delhi civic body polls: AAP edges past BJP in neck-and-neck contest
In a neck-and-neck contest so far, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has gained an edge over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as per the initial trends in the counting of votes for the Delhi civic body polls on Wednesday.
As per the official data by the Election Commission till 10 am, the AAP which was trailing since the counting began at 8 am, gained a lead over the ruling BJP. The latest data shows the AAP leading in 114 municipal wards as against the BJP which is leading in 110.
Congress, which was trailing since morning on the third spot, maintains its position with its lead in 11 wards, while the BSP is leading 1n 1 ward. 4 independents are also leading.
The high-decibel battle which was fought in the election campaign ahead of the polling on December 4, witnessed the claims and counter-claims by both parties (BJP, AAP) of winning the elections, however, it all boils down to December 7 when the outcome of the election would be revealed.
The polls for 250 wards in the national capital were held on December 4 with about 50 per cent voter turnout and a total of 1,349 candidates were in the fray. However, the low voter turnout may not be an indicator of pro-incumbency with the exit polls predicting the AAP win in the MCD polls.
Congress, which is mostly focussing on the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, was not predicted (in the exit polls) to be a prominent challenger in the recently conducted polling. The party is predicted to get only a handful of seats.
However, the high-stakes civic polls are largely seen as a three-way contest between the BJP, the AAP and the Congress.
For the counting, the Commission has set up 42 counting centres across the city. 68 Election Observers have already been deployed by the Commission under whose supervision the counting of votes shall be carried out by the Returning Officers in the presence of candidates or their representatives.
Further, the Commission has also deployed 136 engineers from Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL) at these counting centres to attend to any technical issues regarding the EVMs which may arise during the counting of votes.
Special Media Rooms to facilitate viewing of live results on the Commission’s web portal on the LED screens at these 42 counting centres.
These centres are under multi-layered security and entry of persons authorized by the Commission shall only be allowed by the security personnel deployed at these centres.
Delhi had witnessed highly charged campaigning by AAP and BJP which made top leaders, including Union ministers, chief ministers of BJP-ruled states and MPs hit the streets for door-to-door campaigning and meetings to garner public support.
The BJP, which has governed the civic body in Delhi since 2007, is looking to maintain its winning streak.
This was the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise. There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations – NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC in Delhi from 2012-2022 that later reunified into an MCD that had formally come into existence on May 22.

NDPI seeks enquiry into leak of list of 56 Kashmiri Pandit employees
National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) J&K UT president Rajesh Gupta expresses concern over threat by The Resistance Front to KP employees working under Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package
It is surprising to see the fresh list of 56 Kashmiri Pandit employees getting leaked and reaching the TRF’s blog Kashmir Fight. This is a security breach as terrorists have a clear idea about their place of posting,” Gupta said in a statement issued here.
NDPI Chief said the government must take strong note of it and find out who has leaked the list of 56 migrant KPs at a time when targeted killings are taking place in the Valley.The NDPI leader said officers involved in the act must be reprimanded and action should be taken against them.
He said KPs working under PMRP are living in fear due to the killing of their colleagues and the fresh threat has added to their woes.
He urged the government to take the fresh threats seriously and address the issue on priority while chalking out a fresh strategy.The NDPI on Tuesday urged police to conduct an enquiry on the militant threat to the 56 Kashmiri Pandit employees and stressed the administration to ensure their security.
Rajesh Gupta expressed serious concern over the threat given by a militant outfit, The Resistance Front (TRF) to the KP employees working under Prime Minister’s Rehabilitation Package (PMRP).

BOSE extends dates for submission of online exam forms for classes 10, 11, 12
Jammu: J&K Board of School Education on Tuesday extended the date for the submission of online Forms for classes 10, 11 and 12 Annual (Regular) examinations 2023, and renewal registration returns of classes 11 and 12.
For submission of exam forms for said classes without last fee was extended to 17 December, 2022, and for submission of exam forms with late fee and additional fee for 1st count of 10 days was extended to 27 December, 2023.
