Reconciliation only way forward, bringing more troops will make issue more complex: Mehbooba
Jammu: Former Chief Minister and President People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mehbooba Mufti Thursday taking into consideration the recent civilian killings in Dangri Rajouri terrorist attack said that reconciliation is the only way forward.
She said that giving arms to locals in border districts of Jammu and bringing more troops here will make the issue more complex, besides there is no dearth of armed forces in the Union Territory.
In response to recent terrorist assaults in Rajouri district that resulted in the deaths of civilians, the Central Reserve Police Force would send an additional 18 companies (or 1800 troops) to Jammu & Kashmir.
In the districts of Poonch and Rajouri, personnel will be stationed.
In a bid to enhance security setup in the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, authorities on Wednesday are deploying a large number of CRPF companies to secure minority areas in the region.
The development comes in view of twin terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district in which six people including two children were killed and 11 others were injured.
Moreover, as per sources, eight CRPF companies would be deployed very soon from adjacent deployment zones in Jammu and Kashmir, while ten CRPF units are being hurried from Delhi.
The decision was prompted by a recent directive issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in response to intelligence of a terror strike in the Jammu region, as per the sources.
Since Sunday evening, about a dozen individuals have allegedly been injured in two terrorist incidents in the border district.
For last 30 years, the security agencies have been managing to maintain peace in J&K, but there is no military solution to this issue, Mehbooba said.

As India embarks on its digital journey with full steam, Microsoft wishes to move in and provide every part of its tech stack to the country and its innovators, to help it become the $1 trillion digital economy as the country spends more on its tech sector, the company’s Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said here on Thursday.
Nadella told IANS that India’s tax spend as a percentage of its GDP is becoming normalised when compared to the developed world, and is now among the top 10 countries.
“I ask, what happens if India spends more on its tech sector? What is the productivity gain that the world can benefit from? And here, we want to move in with our world-class offerings,” Nadella said during a closed-door session.
“We want to be the infrastructure provider. We want to be the developer amplifier. We want to provide every part of our tech stack to basically help the country gain that leverage towards becoming a $1 trillion digital economy soon,” he emphasised.
At the opening ceremony of the BRICS Business Forum in virtual mode last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India’s digital sector valuations will cross $1 trillion soon.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in November that over the next 5-7 years, “we will surely see our trillion-dollar digital economy goal become reality.”
The IT and BPM sector has become one of the most significant growth catalysts for the Indian economy, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP and public welfare.
According to India Brand Equity Foundation, the IT industry accounted for 7.4 per cent of India’s GDP in FY22 and is expected to contribute 10 per cent to India’s GDP by 2025.

China under-representing true impact of Covid-19, related deaths: WHO
Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) warned that China is “under-representing the true impact” of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country, especially the exact number of deaths.
In a statement on Wednesday, Michael Ryan, Executive Director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme, said: “We believe that definition (of a Covid death) is too narrow,” the BBC reported.
Amidst the ongoing outbreak, China has stopped publishing the single-day tallies for Covid-19 cases and deaths.
In December 2022, the country changed the criteria for what constitutes a Covid death, meaning only those who die of respiratory illnesses are counted.
In his statement, Ryan added that China had increased its engagement with the WHO in recent weeks, and said he looked forward to receiving “more comprehensive data”, reports the BBC.
But he also suggested individual healthworkers could report their own data and experiences.
“We do not discourage doctors and nurses reporting these deaths and these cases. We have an open approach to be able to record the actual impact of disease in society,” the top WHO official was quoted as saying.
The UK science data company Airfinity estimates more than two million Covid cases a day in China, and some 14,700 deaths.
Since China lifted key parts of its “zero-Covid” strategy almost a month ago, there have been reports of hospitals and crematoriums being overwhelmed.
More than a dozen nations, including India, have introduced travel restrictions on travellers from China — a move criticised by Beijing as being politically motivated and threatened to retaliate.
No new Covid variants have been detected in China, despite the surge in cases.

Centre declares Afghan-based Islamic State J-K operative Aijaz Ahanger designated terrorist under UAPA
Jammu, January 5 : The government has named Afghanistan-based chief recruiter of Islamic State J&K (ISJK) Aijaz Ahmad Ahanger as designated terrorist under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, officials said on Thursday.
Ahanger alias Abu Usman Al-Kazhmiri, born in Nawakadal, Srinagar, in 1974, and based in Afghanistan, has been declared an “individual terrorist” under the Fourth Schedule of the UAPA, the officials said.
In a notification, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said, Ahanger “is wanted by J&K Police” for his links with Al-Qaida and other global terrorist groups. He is alleged to have been engaged in re-starting the ISIS channels in India, the MHA said in the notification.
Ahanger is also accused of providing traction to militancy in Kashmir Valley and has initiated an online India-centric ISIS propaganda magazine.

Govt Efforts Alone Cannot Be Successful, People’s Participation Required: PM Modi
NEW DELHI, Jan 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underlined the importance of people’s participation in the efforts for water conservation and said the governments’ attempts alone cannot be successful. In his virtual address at the first national conference of water ministers from states, Modi said water should be a subject of cooperation, collaboration and coordination among states and asked them to plan in advance in view of the fast pace of urbanisation.
His remarks assume significance as disputes over water-sharing have lingered among several states for decades.
The prime minister said he thinks that under the MGNREGA maximum work should be done on water as he called for spreading awareness among people for its conservation.
Water is most consumed in sectors such as industry and farming, and awareness should be spread among them, he said, advocating for crop diversity and natural farming.
Modi also urged states to work on waste management and sewage treatment to stop water bodies from being polluted, and said they can use the ‘Namami Gange’ scheme as a template.
People’s participation in any programme develops a sense of ownership among them which, he said, is a key to success. Modi cited the ‘Swachh Bharat’ (clean India) campaign as a successful example of this.
The all-India water ministers’ meet on the theme ‘Water Vision@2047’ brings together key policy makers to discuss “ways to harness water resources for sustainable development”, the government has said.

NEET-PG 2023 to be conducted on March 5
NEW DELHI, Jan 5: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NMEMS) will conduct the 2023 National Eligibility cum Entrance Test-Post Graduate (NEET-PG) on March 25, 2023.
A notice by the NBEMS also included several important dates. The Information Bulletin will be available from January 5 onwards, whereas the online submission of the application form opens at 3 p.m. on January 5, until January 25 (11:55 p.m.).
The result following the 2023 NEET-PG will be declared on March 31, 2023.
