J-K Rahul Priyanka visit Kheer Bhawani temple Hazratbal shrine
Srinagar, Jan 31 (PTI) Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra visited Jammu and Kashmir’s two revered shrines of Kheer Bhawani and Hazratbal on Tuesday, a day after the Bharat Jodo Yatra concluded here, officials said.
The Gandhi siblings first drove from their hotel here to the shrine of Ragnya Devi, popularly known as Mata Kheer Bhawani Temple, in Tullamula area of the central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, the officials said.
The duo, accompanied by some Congress leaders, paid obeisance at the shrine nestled among mighty chinars, 28 kilometres from here, they said.
The temple is a revered shrine for the Kashmiri Pandits who believe that the colour of the sacred spring water, which flows below the temple, indicates to the situation in the valley.
While most of the colours don’t have any particular significance, black or dark colour of the water is believed to be an indication of inauspicious times for Kashmir.
Later, they visited Dargah Hazratbal, on the banks of the famous Dal Lake here. The shrine houses a relic of Prophet Mohammad and is deeply revered among the Muslims in the valley.
The visits were kept a secret due to security considerations, they said.
Air traffic, train services resume in Kashmir; highway remains closed
Srinagar, Jan 31: Air traffic to and fro Srinagar International Airport resumed on Tuesday, a day after poor visibility and continuous snowfall forced cancellation of all 68 scheduled flights.
Quoting official sources, GNS reported that two indigo flights landed at the airport before noon.
Earlier Director, Airport Authority of India (AAI), Srinagar Airport, Kuldeep Singh said that the visibility is good and the surface stands clear of snow for smooth arrival and departure of the flights.
Meanwhile the train services from Banihal to Baramulla and vice versa resumed this morning after a day-long suspension on Monday due to snowfall.
However, Jammu-Srinagar highway, the only surface link connecting Kashmir Valley with the outside world, remained closed. “People are advised not to take any journey on NH-44 (highway) till the restoration work is completed,’ a traffic department official here said.
India’s budget will be ray of hope for world: PM Modi
NEW DELHI, Jan 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said amid global economic turmoil, India’s budget will attempt to meet the hopes and aspirations of common citizens and be a ray of hope for the world.
Addressing the media ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament, Modi said recognised voices in the world of economy were bringing positive messages from all sides.
The prime minister said the Budget, to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday, will strive to fulfil people’s hopes, aspirations and also boost the hopes with which the world is looking at India.
“The ray of hope being seen by the world will glow brighter — for this, I firmly believe the finance minister will make all efforts to meet these aspirations,” Modi said.
He also noted that President Droupadi Murmu was delivering her maiden address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session.
The President’s speech is the pride of the Constitution of India, the pride of India’s parliamentary system, and also an opportunity to respect women and the great tribal traditions of the country, Modi said. (Agencies)
Expecting slowdown in Indian economy to 6.1% in 2023 from 6.8% in 2022, says IMF
WASHINGTON, Jan 31: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on January 31 said it is expecting some slowdown in the Indian economy next fiscal year and projected the growth to 6.1% from 6.8% during the current fiscal ending March 31.
The IMF on Tuesday released the January update of its World Economic Outlook, according to which the global growth is projected to fall from an estimated 3.4% in 2022 to 2.9% in 2023, then rise to 3.1% in 2024.
“Our growth projections actually for India are unchanged from our October Outlook. We have 6.8% growth for this current fiscal year, which runs until March, and then we’re expecting some slowdown to 6.1% in fiscal year 2023. And that is largely driven by external factors,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Chief Economist and Director, Research Department of the IMF told reporters here.
“Growth in India is set to decline from 6.8% in 2022 to 6.1% in 2023 before picking up to 6.8% in 2024, with resilient domestic demand despite external headwinds,” said the IMF’s World Economic Outlook update.
According to the report, growth in emerging and developing Asia is expected to rise in 2023 and 2024 to 5.3% and 5.2%, respectively, after the deeper-than-expected slowdown in 2022 to 4.3 percent attributable to China’s economy.
China’s real GDP slowdown in the fourth quarter of 2022 implies a 0.2 percentage point downgrade for 2022 growth to 3.0%—the first time in more than 40 years with China’s growth below the global average. Growth in China is projected to rise to 5.2% in 2023, reflecting rapidly improving mobility, and to fall to 4.5% in 2024 before settling at below 4% over the medium term amid declining business dynamism and slow progress on structural reforms.
“Overall, I want to point out that emerging market economies on the whole and developing economies seem to be already on their way up. We have a slight increase in growth for the region from 3.9% in 2022 to 4% in 2023,” Mr. Gourinchas said.
“Another relevant point here is that if we look at both China and India together, they account for about 50% of world growth in 2023. So a very significant contribution,” he said.
“I want to say, we had a positive view on India in our October forecast. That positive view is largely unchanged,” Mr. Gourinchas said in response to a question.
In a blog post he wrote that India remains a bright spot. Together with China, it will account for half of global growth this year, versus just a 10th for the U.S. and euro area combined, he added.
For advanced economies, the slowdown will be more pronounced, with a decline from 2.7% last year to 1.2% and 1.4% this year and next. Nine out of 10 advanced economies will likely decelerate, Mr. Gourinchas said.
The U.S.’ growth will slow to 1.4% in 2023 as Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes work their way through the economy. Euro area conditions are more challenging despite signs of resilience to the energy crisis, a mild winter, and generous fiscal support, he said.
“With the European Central Bank tightening monetary policy, and a negative terms-of-trade shock — due to the increase in the price of its imported energy — we expect growth to bottom out at 0.7 percent this year,” Mr. Gourinchas wrote. (Agencies)
“We need to build Aatmanirbhar Bharat by 2047,” President Murmu addresses joint session in Parliament
New Delhi, Jan 31: India has entered Amrit Kaal completing its 75 years of Independence and in this citizens have to focus on their duty towards building an ‘aatmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) India, said President Droupadi Murmu in her pre-budget address to the joint session of Parliament on Tuesday.
“By 2047, we have to build a nation that will be connected to the pride of the past and which will have all the golden chapters of modernity. We have to build an India that will be ‘Aatmanirbhar’ and capable to fulfill its humanitarian duties,” President Murmu said.
In her maiden address to the joint sitting of Lok Sabha and Rajay Sabha in the central hall of Parliament President Murmu said, “India has entered Amrit Kaal completing its 75 years of Independence. Amrit Kaal is a period of 100 years of Independence and making of a developed India. These 25 years is a period for all citizens to focus on duty.”
The President described an India without poverty and full of prosperity.
“That should be an India that will not have poverty, whose middle class will also be prosperous, an India whose youth and women will stand at the front to show a path to society and the country, an India whose youth stays two steps ahead of time,” she said.
President Murmu also lauded India’s growing position on the world stage and said that the country is providing solutions to the world.
“Today, India’s self-confidence is at its highest and the world is looking at her from a different perspective. India is providing solutions to the world,” the President said.
This is President Murmu’s first budget session speech since assuming office in July last year. The President arrived in a ceremonial escort to Parliament to address the joint session at the start of the Budget session
Earlier addressing reporters outside Parliament Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Our Finance Minister will present one more Budget before the country tomorrow. In today’s global circumstances, not only India but the entire world is looking at India’s budget. Amid the unstable global economic situation, India’s Budget will attempt to meet the hopes and aspirations of the common citizens. I firmly believe that Nirmala Sitharaman will make all efforts to meet those aspirations.”
The budget session that began today with the President’s address will take place in 27 sittings till April 6 with a month-long recess to examine the budget papers. The first part of the session will conclude on February 13. Parliament will reconvene on March 12 for the second part of the Budget Session and will conclude on April 6. (Agencies)
Government orders premature retirement of 3 officials of Prison Department
JAMMU: The Jammu and Kashmir government Tuesday ordered premature retirement of 03 officials of Prison Department for their involvement in corruption, underperformance and anti-social activities.
In its endeavor to make the Administration more efficient and transparent, the government prematurely retired 03 personnel of Prison Department on charges of their involvement in corruption and criminal activities.
These personnel conducted their duties in ways which were unbecoming of public servants and in violation of the established code of conduct.
The exercise was conducted as part of regular process of scrutiny of records of officials, who cross benchmarks of age/service period in terms of Article 226(2) of J&K CSRs.
Out of these retirees, one was found involved in a serious criminal case and remained under custody for three years, besides, the official had gained a bad public reputation. Another official was found habitual of violating official channels of communication and has been found guilty of sending fake and frivolous complaints, misusing RTI Act and wasting time of High Court for which he was also fined with Rs.10,000/-by the Court. The official was imposed Major punishment in shape of withholding of three annual increments. Further, one official was found involved in smuggling of contraband substances inside Sub-Jail Reasi.
According to the recommendations of the Review Committee, the performance of these employees was found unsatisfactory and their continuation in the government service was found against the public interest.
During the recent past, as part of its zero tolerance policy towards corruption, various employees have been dismissed from service on account of official misconduct, after rigorously following departmental proceedings against them.
Many cases are under scrutiny with the Empowered Committees constituted for consideration of cases under Article 226(2) of J&K CSRs. Further, many employees have also been terminated from service on account of anti-national activities.
Meanwhile, the government has also initiated several measures for human resource development of its employees in Jammu and Kashmir which includes online Human Resource Management System (eHRMS), induction of officers into the prestigious Indian Administrative/ Police Service, timely DPCs for smooth career progression, updating recruitment rules, fast tracking the recruitment process through recruiting agencies and abolishing of interviews for most of the non-gazetted vacancies referred to the Services Selection Board.
Sonia Gandhi To Attend Prez Address As Kharge, Other Cong MPs Stuck In Srinagar
New Delhi/Srinagar, Jan 31: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi will attend the President’s address to a joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament on Tuesday as party MPs, including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, are stuck in Srinagar due to delayed flights.
Sources said the CPP chairperson will represent the Congress party during President Droupadi Murmu’s first address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament.
Several Congress MPs, including Kharge, will not be able to attend the President’s address due to delayed flights from Srinagar on account of inclement weather, party leader Jairam Ramesh said.
The Congress leaders and MPs are in Srinagar for the concluding events of the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Monday.
They could not attend the meeting of various political parties convened by the government on Monday ahead of the budget session of Parliament.
Senior party MP Naseer Hussain was to attend the meeting but failed to do so as all flights from Srinagar were cancelled due to heavy snowfall.
“Due to delayed flights from Srinagar airport on account of inclement weather conditions, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, @kharge ji & many other Congress MPs will be unable to attend the President’s address to both Houses of Parliament at 11 am today,” Ramesh said in a tweet on Tuesday.
Hussain, who is the Whip CPP in Rajya Sabha, said, due to weather conditions, Kharge, Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdary and several Congress MPs are stranded at Srinagar airport and it may not be possible for them to attend the President’s address at 11 am.
The President addresses members of both Houses in the Parliament’s Central Hall on the first day of budget session every year.
The Bharat Jodo Yatra ended on Monday with leaders of several parties joining Congress leader Rahul Gandhi as he capped his ambitious 136-day journey that covered over 3,000 km from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. (Agencies)
Mainly Dry, Foggy Weather Forecast Till February 4 In Jammu And Kashmir
SRINAGAR, Jan 31: Mainly dry and foggy weather has been forecast till February 4 and light rain and snowfall thereafter for one week in Jammu and Kashmir. However, the weather department has ruled out the possibility of any major snowfall in the next ten days.
“From February 1 to 4, mainly dry weather is expected but fog is likely to develop in Jammu & Kashmir (60% chance),” a meteorological department official here said.
For the subsequent one week, he said, light rain and snowfall is expected at isolated places.
“There is no major snowfall for the next 10 days,” he said.
In last 24 till 0830 hours today, the MeT department official said that Srinagar received 6.29 inches of snow, Qazigund 9.8 inches, Pahalgam 10.56 inches, Kupwara 7.87 inches, Kokernag 7.1 inches and Gulmarg 19.7 inches, Banihal 1.37 inches, Batote 0.4 inches and Bhaderwah 0.8 inches.
Regarding minimum temperature, he said, Srinagar recorded a low of 0.0°C against minus 0.2°C on the previous night. Today’s minimum temperature, he said, was above normal by 0.7°C for the summer capital.
Qazigund, he said, recorded a low of minus 0.4°C against minus 0.1°C on the previous night and it was 1.7°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 4.7°C against minus 1.4°C on the previous night and it was 1.4°C above normal for the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.8°C, the same as on the previous night and it was 1.6°C above normal for the place, the officials said.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8.4°C against minus 4.6°C on the previous night and it was 0.8°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, he said.
In Kupwara town, he said, the mercury settled at minus 0.8°C against minus 0.4°C on the previous night and it was above 1.5°C above normal for the north Kashmir area.
Jammu received 26.6mm of rain during the 24 hours and recorded a low of 7.1°C against 10.4°C on the previous night. It was 1.3°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal, he said, had 39.8mm of rain during the time and recorded a low of minus 0.4°C (below normal by 1.2°C); Batote 52.1mm of rain and recorded a low of minus 0.5°C (below normal by 2.6°C); Katra received 49.4mm of rain and recorded a low of 6.1°C (0.9°C below normal) while Bhadarwah received 27.8mm of rain during the time and recorded minimum temperature of 0.2°C (0.8°C above normal).
Ladakh’s Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 8.0°C and minus 10.2°C respectively, the official said.
While Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21 has ended, Kashmir is under the grip of a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’. It will be followed by a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
Covid-19 | India Records 66 New Infections, Active Cases At 1,755
New Delhi, Jan 31: India saw a single-day rise of 66 new coronavirus cases — the lowest since March 26, 2020 — while the active caseload declined to 1,755, according to Union Health Ministry data on Tuesday.
The total tally of COVID-19 cases was recorded at 4.46 crore (4,46,82,785).
The death toll stands at 5,30,740, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The daily positivity rate was recorded at 0.05 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was pegged at 0.07 per cent.
Active cases now comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has risen to 98.81 per cent, the ministry website showed.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,50,289 while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.
According to the website, 220.48 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered so far under the nationwide drive.
