SRINAGAR, Feb 9: The MeT office on Thursday forecast rain or snow in Kashmir division and rain in Jammu division during the next 24 hours.
“Light to moderate rain/snow is likely in Valley and rain in Jammu division during the next 24 hours”, a MeT department official said.
On Wednesday, the weather was dry and cloudy in the union territory.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded 0.8 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 2.4 and Gulmarg minus 4.2 degree as the minimum temperature.
In Ladakh region, Kargil registered minus 15 and Leh minus 10.
Jammu clocked a low of 9.9 degrees, Katra — 9.1, Batote –5.7, Banihal and Bhaderwah as 2.6 and 3.7 respectively as the minimum temperature.

Pak Drone Spotted Near IB In Punjab’s Gurdaspur, Returns After BSF Troops Open Fire
CHANDIGARH, Feb 9: A Pakistani drone was spotted close to the International Border in Gurdaspur district of Punjab, a BSF official said on Thursday.
The unmanned aerial vehicle flew back to Pakistan after the Border Security Force troops fired at it.
The drone was spotted near Adia border outpost in Gurdaspur at around 9:40 pm on Wednesday, said the official.
The BSF troops fired 16 rounds at the Pakistani drone and also used an illumination bomb, said the official.
A search operation was underway, said the official. (Agencies)
NDPI holds a massive protest
against AAP burns Kejriwal’s effigy
National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) J&K UT on Wednesday held a massive protest against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at Dogra Hall Jammu. The NDPI protesters were shouting slogans against AAP and its leader Arvind Kejriwal “Aam Aadmi Party ko Jammu se dafa karo dafa karo” Deshdrohi Kejriwal ko girfatar karo girfatar karo”. NDPI protesters also burnt an effigy of Arvind Kejriwal.
NDPI J&K UT Chief Rajesh Gupta while addressing to media said, that nobody will be allowed to disturb peace or resort to secessionist activities in the state. “We are not going to allow anybody to create such atmosphere where peace and tranquility is disturbed in Jammu and Kashmir,” Gupta said here. “It is very unfortunate that some leaders belong to Aam Aadmi Party tried to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of peaceful Jammu. National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) has taken a very serious cognizance against the AAP’S activities said, Gupta. “The AAP and its leaders were involved in all those big scams which tarnished the image of India,” he added.
NDPI leader strongly condemned the worst act to break the democratic values of the country and particularly in Jammu by Aam Aadmi Party. He slammed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which was trying to hide the facts of AAP leader Mehraj Malik.
Gupta said there is no need to hide the facts if AAP is real nationalist party then doesn’t do the advocacy of anti-national elements like Mehraj Malik who deliberately instigated the mob at Malik Market Jammu. The Aam Aadmi party is based on the twin pillars of corruption and protecting the corrupt, he said.
Rajesh Gupta maintained that Malik is a very shrewd politician and police did very well by registering an FIR against him. I appeal to LG Manoj Sinha to impose Public Safety Act (PSA) on Mehraz Malik and put him behind the bars. He not only instigated the mob but hurt the democratic values to disturb the peaceful brotherhood between various communities of Jammu. In my view Yudhvir Sethi has not hurt any body’s sentiments nor instigated anyone. He is proud Nationalist and clean person. Other senior leaders those joined the protest were S.Kuljit Singh, Umesh Manhas, Sandeep Anand, Rajiv Luthra, Tilakraj and others.

J&K Set To See Completion Of JJM By June ‘23; CS J&K Takes Feedback From People
JAMMU, Feb 08: Chief Secretary, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta conducted virtual tour of works taken up under the central flagship programme Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) across the UT of J&K. He interacted with public and officials of the department for taking first hand appraisal of the progress made in the mission so far.
The virtual tour took place in a meeting attended by Principal Secretary, Jal Shakti Department; Mission Director, JJM; Deputy Commissioners; Special Secretary, JSD; Director Finance, JSD; Chief Engineers; Superintending Engineers; Executive Engineers and other officers of the Jal Shakti Department.
At the outset, the Chief Secretary asked the officers about the progress of the mission and asked them to meet the deadlines without any fail. He directed them to tender all the components of each scheme to complete them fully. He also urged them to expedite the tendering of remaining works so that these are taken up before March this year.
He impressed upon them to involve the local people so that the scheme runs successfully in future as well.
He enjoined upon the officers of the mission to augment the monitoring mechanism for the effective implementation of this mega mission. He also stressed on third party evaluation of the works besides greater role for public representatives and Paani Samities in monitoring progress.
He laid stress on using techniques like Critical Path Method (CPM) and Resource Management System for better control and understanding of the priority areas and discerning the way forward to complete each work on time.
He instructed the officers to carry out the capacity building of the field workers so that the mission worth Rs 11000 Cr is implemented efficiently. He maintained that such missions provide golden opportunity to departments to enhance their efficiency in terms of capacity of their employees and addressing the manpower requirements as well.
Dr Mehta also asked about the pace of water testing under JJM and the remedial measures taken in case of poor quality of water found anywhere. He exhorted upon them to involve people and PRI representatives in the testing process and give the testing kits to PaaniSamities for quality check of the tap water.
The Principal Secretary, Shaleen Kabra informed the Chief Secretary that the mission is under implementation from 2019 and has achieved a substantial progress till now. He informed the meeting that all rural institutions like schools, Anganwadi centres and health institutions has been provided piped water under this mission.
He revealed that every remaining rural household would get the tap water connection under this mission by June this year as most of the targets would be completed by then. In the presentation he threw light on all the aspects of the mission. He gave detailed analysis of the objectives, procedures, progress and way forward to take the mission to its logical conclusion.
It was further given out that of 6774 works 6712 had already been tendered out and 3696 works stands allotted till date. It was further revealed that 1893 works are currently under progress and 284 works stands completed in the UT. It was given out that all the works of the Mission would be allotted till March this year.
The meeting was apprised that in order to enhance the transparency and monitoring of the works NGOs have been empanelled as Implementation Support Agencies (ISAs). These ISAs are going to work across villages and help in capacity building of Gram panchayats, PaniSamities and perform other support activities as well.
187 terrorists killed in J-K in 2022: Govt
New Delhi, Feb 8: A total of 187 terrorists were killed and 111 counter-terror operations carried out in Jammu and Kashmir in 2022, Union Minister of State for Home Nityan and Rai said in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Rai said 125 terrorists initiated incidents and 117 encounters took place in Jammu and Kashmir in 2022.
As many as 180 terrorists were killed and 95 counter-terror operations were carried out in Jammu and Kashmir in 2021, he said, replying to a written question of BJP member Sushil Kumar Modi. Altogether 100 encounters and 129 terrorists initiated incidents were also reported in the Union Territory in 2021, he said.
232 dog bite cases reported in Leh in 2023: CMO
Leh/Jammu, Feb 8 : The union territory Ladakh’s Leh district has reported over 230 dog bite cases so far this year, prompting authorities to call for an action plan, including a dog census to deal with the menace.
As many as 232 cases of dog bites have been registered so far in 2023, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Leh, Dr Nurzin Angmo said.
The officials said that a total of 22,145 stray dogs have been sterilised by the Department since 2013.
Dr Angmo further said that a total of 2,000 dog bite cases were registered at SNM hospital in 2022 from all over the union territory.
Secretary of the Department, Ravinder Kumar, who chaired a meeting to deliberate on the issue, called for an immediate action plan to tackle the menace caused by stray dogs and assured the required financial support for implementing the plan of action.
Kumar called a meeting with all the stakeholders to discuss and develop means to deal with threats by stray dogs in a constructive and time-bound manner.
He also stressed the need to involve the villagers and local communities in the endeavours once the plan is chalked out.
Detailed deliberations were also held on controlling feral dogs causing uncountable loss to livestock.
The issue of stray dogs has been a constant and rising concern in Ladakh despite various initiatives implemented in the past years, officials said.
Secretary directed municipal Committee Leh to set up an exclusive team of stray dog catchers while ensuring their safety by vaccinating them and providing them with the proper gear, and equipment.
Feasibility studies for space tourism done Govt
New Delhi, Feb 8 : The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has carried out feasibility studies for a sub-orbital space tourism mission, which could be taken up after the success of the Gaganyaan mission, India’s maiden human space flight, the government informed Parliament on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh said the ISRO is engaged in the development of various technologies that are essential building blocks for human space missions.
“The objective of the Gaganyaan programme is the demonstration of human spaceflight capability to low earth orbit. Future missions will be taken up after the accomplishment of Gaganyaan mission,” Singh said in response to questions from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Sanjay Kaka Patil and YSRCP member Madilla Gurumoorthy.
“ISRO has also carried out a few feasibility studies for a sub-orbital space tourism mission onboard a liquid propellant stage booster,” the minister said.
Patil and Gurumoorthy had sought to know whether the government is taking measures to augment domestic capacity for future realisation of space tourism.
Replying to a separate question, Singh said the ISRO’s planetary and astronomy missions have provided scientific insights regarding the surface, sub-surface and exosphere of the moon, including detection of water molecules on the lunar surface, elemental mapping of the lunar exosphere and the physics of the solar flares.
The AstroSat mission has solved the mystery of a cosmic source, which is bright in both infrared and ultraviolet frequencies, providing a better understanding of various astrophysical processes through simultaneous multi-wavelength observations, he said.
Singh said the AstroSat data has resulted in the publication of more than 750 articles and 12 PhD theses.
J&K eviction drive: Police fouls Mehbooba’s Parliament march, detains her
JAMMU: The Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are set to get the Geographical Indications (GI) tag for nine products.
“The GI applications of all these products have been filed at the GI Registry in Chennai. The Consultative Group Meeting of all these products has already been successfully held and the products are in the final stage of being granted the tag. The final GI tag is expected soon,” a spokesperson said.
The products in line to obtain the GI tag include the famous Basohli paintings (Kathua), Basholi pashmina woolen products (Kathua), Chikri wood craft (Rajouri), Bhaderwah rajma (Doda), Mushkbudji rice (Anantnag), Kaladi (Udhampur), Sulai honey (Ramban), Anardana (Ramban) and Ladakh wood carving (Ladakh), he said.
GI tag grants legal protection to the original producers and prevents their unauthorised use by third parties. It also boosts exports, promotes the goods at the international level and brings economic prosperity to producers and stakeholders.
“Only an authorised user has the exclusive right to use the GI tag in relation to goods in respect of which it is registered. As a result, no person can copy it from beyond the geographical area,” the spokesperson said.
The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development took the initiative to identify unique products from Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, in consultation with various stakeholders. It sanctioned a project for GI tag registration of products from both the Union Territories, he added.
PM Modi wears jacket made from recycled plastic bottles
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday came to parliament wearing a jacket made from recycled plastic bottles giving a message about sustainability.
The Prime Minister chose to wear a sky-blue bandhgala jacket when he came to the Rajya Sabha today. Later in the day, PM Modi is likely to reply to the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha. Under the ‘Unbottled’ initiative of Indian Oil, the Prime Minister on Monday had launched the uniforms made from recycled plastic at the ongoing India Energy Week 2023 in Bengaluru.
During the event, PM Modi had linked India’s effort for Green Growth, and Energy Transition with Indian values of where the circular economy is part of every Indian’s lifestyle and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are part of the culture.
He said initiatives of recycling plastic bottles into uniforms will strengthen Mission LiFE.
“These huge efforts of India towards green growth and energy transition also reflect our values. Circular economy, in a way, is a part of the lifestyle of every Indian. The mantra of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle has been ingrained in our values. Today, we got to see an example of this here. You have seen uniforms made by recycling plastic waste bottles. It does not lack anywhere as far as the world of fashion and beauty is concerned. The target of recycling 100 million such bottles every year will go a long way in protecting the environment,” PM Modi had said.
Guided by the vision of the Prime Minister to phase out single-use plastic, Indian Oil has adopted uniforms for retail customer attendants and LPG delivery personnel made from recycled polyester (rPET) & cotton.
Each set of uniforms of Indian Oil’s customer attendant shall support recycling of around 28 used PET bottles.
Indian Oil is taking this initiative further through ‘Unbottled’ – a brand for sustainable garments launched for merchandise made from recycled polyester. Under this brand, Indian Oil targets to meet the requirement of uniforms for the customer attendants of other Oil Marketing Companies, non-combat uniforms for the Army, uniforms/ dresses for Institutions & sales to retail customers.
At the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had committed to an ambitious five-part “Panchamrit” pledge, including reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, to generate half of all energy requirements from renewables, to reduce emissions by 1 billion tons by 2030.
India also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent.
Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070. Notably, India banned several single-use plastics starting July 2022. ingle-use plastics are typically items that are discarded after being used only once and do not go through the recycling process.
