Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remains closed for vehicular traffic for third consecutive day

In Jammu and Kashmir, the 270 km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, (NH44), the only all-weather surface link which connects Kashmir valley with the rest of the country remained closed for vehicular traffic for the third consecutive day today, February 11.

AIR Correspondent reports that amid landslides and shooting stones at Mehad, Panthiyal and Cafeteria Morh in Ramban district, the strategic National Highway was blocked and was closed for vehicular traffic on Thursday evening. About 500 trucks and 400 LMVs are stranded at different locations on the National Highway highway between Nashri and Banihal in the Ramban.

As many as 94 stranded passengers have been sheltered at different shelter sheds in Ramsu and 40 in Ramban tehsil of the Ramban district. These stranded passengers were provided with free food and heating arrangements besides blankets and mattresses in the lodgement centres. However, the road clearance operation is underway on war footing level to make the road clear and vehicular movement on the National Highway will resume up to the evening today.

The authorities have advised the commuters to undertake the journey on the National Highway only after confirming the status of the road from the Traffic Control Units of Ramban, Srinagar and Jammu. The historic Mughal road, the alternate National Highway connecting the twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch of Jammu region with the Shopian district of Kashmir valley is already closed since December last year.

India records 132 fresh Covid cases

New Delhi, Feb 11: India recorded 132 new coronavirus infections, pushing the tally to 4.46 crore, while the active cases increased to 1,820, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.
The death toll stands at 5,30,750, data updated by the ministry at 8 am stated.
The daily positivity was recorded at 0.10 per cent while the weekly positivity was pegged at 0.09 per cent, the ministry said.
The active cases comprise 0.01 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate increased to 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry website.
So far, the country has recorded a total of 4.46 crore (4,46,83,994) Covid cases.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,51,424, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.19 per cent.
According to the ministry’s website, 220.62 crore doses of vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 inoculation drive.
India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19, 2020.
The country crossed the grim milestone of two crore cases on May 4, three crore on June 23 last year and four crore cases on January 25 this year.

“US would welcome any effort….end of hostilities in Ukraine,” White House on PM Modi to convince President Putin

White House on Friday (local time) reiterated that the US would welcome any effort that could lead to an end of hostilities in Ukraine when asked if there is still time for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop the war or convince President Vladimir Putin.

White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, “I think there’s still time for Putin to stop the war. I think there’s still time for it. I will let PM (PM Modi) speak to whatever efforts he’s willing to undertake. The US would welcome any effort that could lead to an end of hostilities in Ukraine.”

Notably, PM Modi’s statement, this is not the era for war during his interaction with Russian President Vladimir Putin, was a statement of principle he believes is right and was welcomed by the US and resonated widely in Europe in a very positive way.

On the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s summit, PM Modi said, “Today’s era is not of war and I have spoken to you about it on the call. Today we will get the opportunity to talk about how we can progress on the path of peace.”

Prime Minister spoke about this during a bilateral meeting in Uzbekistan’s Samarkand.

This statement was accepted by world leaders and was praised by international media.

PM Modi’s “Today’s era is not of war” became a part of the outcome statement of the G20 joint declaration at Bali in Indonesia.

Kirby meanwhile blamed President Putin for the Russia-Ukraine war. He said, “The single person responsible for what the Ukrainian people are going through is Vladimir Putin and he could stop it right now.”

“Instead, he’s firing cruise missiles into energy and power infrastructure and trying to knock out the lights and knock out the heat so the Ukrainian people suffer even more than they already have,” he added.

Kirby, however, said that the end of hostilities should come, “in keeping with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s objectives and leadership, his determination of what is acceptable to the Ukrainian people. Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”

“So that when President Zelenskyy determines it’s time to negotiate and he’s the only one that can make that determination he can do it with the strongest hand possible,” he added.

Kirby also highlighted US President Joe Biden’s efforts to end the devastating war between Russia and Ukraine.

“So President Biden has said these gosh dozens of times. We think this war could end today, should end today,” he said.

Speaking about US military aid to Ukraine, he said, “And since he’s (President Putin) not willing to do that, clearly we’ve got to make sure we can help the Ukrainians succeed on the battlefield.

Reacting to a viral video, the participant said that we arrived yesterday around 11 pm, we are unable to manage accommodation, however some officials reached out us at late night and provided accommodation. We are happy with the arrangements made by administration, he said.
We arrived late yesterday due to which we were not able to find accommodation but in a prompt response the concerned District administration Baramulla reached out us and managed the accommodation, another participant said.
We have been provided refreshment and other necessary things, we are thankful of District administration Baramulla for such hospitality and sufficient arrangements, he added.

Delhi liquor policy scam: ED arrests YSR Congress MP’s son

In the ongoing Delhi Excise policy case probe, Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Raghav Magunta, son of YSR Congress party MP from Ongole Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy on Saturday.

According to officials, Raghav Magunta was taken into custody on Friday evening under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

He will be produced before a local court, where the ED will seek his custody.

This is the ninth arrest by the ED, in connection with this case. Raghav’s arrest is the third this week.

Propaganda says JK Sports Council on reports of not providing transportation, accommodation to athletes

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has refuted the reports of not providing adequate accommodation and transport facility to athletes who are taking part in the third edition of Khelo India Winter Sports Games at famous ski resort of Gulmarg.

Taking to official Twitter handle Sports Council termed the reports as mere propaganda and those involved will be dealt with as per the law.

“Fake news about the accommodation of the players is being circulated by some media people. J&K Sports Council is providing all possible support and help to the athletes. This propaganda shall be duly dealt with the relevant law,” it tweeted.

Notably, a video had gone viral on a social media handle late last night wherein a few persons claiming to be participants at Khelo India Event alleged they were not provided transportation and accommodation.

Meanwhile, an official told that all those athletes who have registered for the event are being fully taken care of and is a proper communication channel has been set up to address any issue.

The Sports Council has also issued helpline numbers for accommodation, transport and medical assistance for all the athletes participating in the event.

Srinagar, Feb 11: The MeT office on Saturday predicted dry weather in Jammu division and rain and snow in Kashmir during the next 24 hours.

“Dry weather in Jammu division and scattered to fairly widespread rain/snow is likely to occur in the Valley during next 24 hours”, an official of the MeT department said.

Srinagar recorded 0.5 degree Celsius minimum temperature, Pahalgam minus 2.4 and Gulmarg minus 8.3 degrees.

In Ladakh region, Drass town registered minus 7.7 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 6.7 degrees and Leh minus 10.4 degrees.

Jammu had 9.5, Katra 8.8, Batote 2.4, Banihal 1.8 and Bhaderwah 1.1 as the minimum temperature.

Rain and snow occurred in J&K during the last 24 hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be addressing the Indian Association of Physiotherapist (IAP) National Conference in Ahmedabad via video conferencing.

The Prime Minister’s Office informed on Saturday that PM Modi will address IAP at around 9:40 am. “In a short while from now, at around 9:40 AM, PM @narendramodiwill share his remarks at the Indian Association of Physiotherapist (IAP) National Conference in Ahmedabad via video conferencing,” the PMO statement read.

Flight operations hit by snowfall, low visibility at Srinagar airport

Srinagar, Feb 11: Air travel to and from Srinagar International Airport was hit due to snowfall this morning as authorities diverted a few flights due to reduced visibility.

A senior airport officer told GNS that visibility has reduced to 500 M while it was continuously snowing. “No flight operations have taken place since morning,” he said, adding, “We are waiting for weather to improve.”

Already a few flights expected to arrive at the airport had to be diverted to New Delhi or Amritsar, he said.
