RSS Launches ‘Dhwaj Yatra’ from Kashmir to Kanyakumari to Address Misconceptions About Organisation

0

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Friday launched a nationwide ‘Dhwaj Yatra’ (flag rally) from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, saying the initiative aims to address what it described as “misgivings” and misconceptions about the organisation among sections of the public.

The yatra was symbolically flagged off from Srinagar’s historic Lal Chowk and concluded locally at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), from where participants departed in vehicles for the onward journey to different parts of the country.

Participants said the outreach programme is intended to present the organisation’s perspective, history and activities directly to the people. “The aim of this yatra is to clear the misgivings that the RSS is against some people. We also want to convey the real history to people, who have been fed a distorted version so far,” one of the participants, Veer Kapoor, said.

Organisers said the rally is part of a broader series of events being planned to mark 100 years of the RSS. As part of the centenary outreach, a film titled Shatak, based on the organisation’s journey and contributions, has been produced and is scheduled for release on February 19.

The yatra is expected to pass through multiple states as part of a pan-India public engagement campaign.

Karra Seeks Clear Timeline for J&K Statehood Restoration, Calls for All-Party Panel on Pandit Rehabilitation

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday urged the Centre to announce a clear timeline for restoring statehood to the Union Territory, saying the continued uncertainty has weakened public trust in governance.

Participating in the motion of thanks on the Lieutenant Governor’s address in the Legislative Assembly, Karra said the core political demand of the people — restoration of statehood — remains unaddressed. He noted that while the issue found mention in the previous address, it was absent this time.

“The LG spoke of participatory governance and public trust, but how can such trust exist when the people’s core demand — restoration of statehood — remains unresolved,” Karra said. He added that the present Assembly came into existence only after the intervention of the Supreme Court ensured the restoration of the democratic process.

Referring to statements by the Centre that statehood would be restored at an “appropriate time,” the Congress leader asked the government to define a timeframe. “What is the right time? What is its measure and standard? How long will the people of Jammu and Kashmir have to wait?” he said.

Karra said senior Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, have raised the demand for immediate restoration of statehood in Parliament and through formal communication with the Prime Minister.

In an apparent swipe at the BJP, he said that while most people want full statehood restored to a united Jammu and Kashmir, some voices are advocating separate statehood for Jammu. He cautioned that such proposals could deepen regional mistrust and weaken collective strength.

The Congress leader also said the LG’s address did not adequately address humanitarian concerns relating to the rehabilitation of migrant Kashmiri Pandits and refugees from 1947, 1965 and 1971.

He called for a comprehensive and dignified rehabilitation plan for Kashmiri Pandits, stating that symbolic or purely economic measures would not be sufficient. He proposed the formation of an all-party committee of MLAs to initiate structured dialogue with the Kashmiri Pandit community and prepare a practical roadmap for their safe return.

On West Pakistani refugees, Karra said the one-time assistance package of Rs 30 lakh per family approved during the previous UPA government should be fully implemented, noting that only Rs 5 lakh per family has been disbursed so far. He also demanded the creation of a dedicated welfare board to address their pending land, settlement and livelihood issues.

LG Manoj Sinha Attends Idol Installation Ceremony in Haridwar, Highlights India’s Spiritual and Cultural Renaissance

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday attended the idol installation ceremony of Swami Satyamitranand Giri Ji Maharaj in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, and spoke on what he described as India’s ongoing economic, cultural and spiritual renaissance.

The Spiritual, Cultural and Sadguru Memorial Celebration was organised under the guidance of Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj, Acharya Mahamandaleshwar of Juna Akhara, and was attended by saints and devotees from across the country.

Addressing the gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said a new consciousness is emerging in society driven by spiritual values and cultural resurgence. He said that with the blessings of revered saints, people are moving steadily toward the vision of building a modern and transformed India.

Sinha noted that the principles envisioned by India’s ancestors thousands of years ago are now gaining global acceptance, pointing to the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — as a guiding idea for peace and harmony.

“Since time immemorial, our tradition has championed the welfare of all humanity. It has gifted us the expansive vision of the world as one family. Our ancient culture has never sown division; it has always promoted unity, individual well-being and prosperity for all,” he said.

He added that India has redefined spirituality, universal welfare and patriotism for the world, and described the country as the cradle of one of the most advanced civilizations and cultures capable of guiding global peace and harmony.

The Lieutenant Governor also said that India’s soft power and spiritual heritage are increasingly being recognised worldwide, with yoga and meditation becoming part of daily life in households across many countries.

It added that the growth rate during this period was higher than Delhi and Himachal Pradesh and marginally above Haryana.

Per capita income in the Union Territory is projected at Rs 1,68,243 in 2025-26, with a growth rate surpassing several northern states and Union Territories, including Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana over the last five years. J&K currently contributes around 0.8 per cent to the national GDP.

Sector-wise, the primary sector is expected to contribute 20.45 per cent to Gross State Value Added (GSVA) in 2025-26 and continues to support livelihoods for about 42.99 per cent of the workforce. The secondary and tertiary sectors are projected to contribute 18.52 per cent and 61.02 per cent, respectively.

Under employment schemes such as PMEGP and JKREGP, more than 10,800 units were set up in 2024-25, generating self-employment for around 85,000 youth. Over 36 lakh unorganised workers were registered on the e-SHRAM portal till November 2025.

The survey highlighted a shift in agriculture towards high-value crops, organic farming and exotic varieties under programmes such as the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and J&K Competitiveness Improvement Project (JKCIP). Horticulture area expanded to 3.47 lakh hectares, with production rising by 12.5 per cent. Almond and walnut exports reached Rs 602.53 crore in 2024-25.

Tourism remained a major growth driver, with 1.78 crore visitors, including about 36,000 foreign tourists, visiting Jammu and Kashmir in 2025, the report said.

Industrial growth was described as robust, with 2,227 units becoming operational over the past seven years and attracting investments worth Rs 15,940 crore.

In the social sector, the neonatal mortality rate declined to 9.8 and infant mortality rate to 14, while life expectancy increased to 74.3 years. Institutional births reached 99.7 per cent and full immunisation coverage touched 100 per cent.

The report said more than 87.64 lakh Ayushman Bharat Golden Cards have been issued, and about 19 lakh treatments delivered under the AB-PMJAY-SEHAT scheme, resulting in estimated savings of Rs 3,435 crore for beneficiaries.

In education, total enrolment crossed 26.17 lakh students in 2024-25, alongside falling dropout rates and improved transition levels. The survey added that hydropower capacity is being doubled to 3,014 MW by 2028, while power transmission and distribution capacity has risen by 44 per cent over the past six years.

J&K Reports 2.06 Lakh Dog Bite Cases in Two Years; Jammu District Records Highest Incidents

More than 2.06 lakh dog bite cases were reported across Jammu and Kashmir during 2024 and 2025, with Jammu district emerging as the worst affected, the government informed the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a question from National Conference MLA Mubarak Gul, Health Minister Sakina Itoo said that 2,06,460 dog bite incidents were recorded across the Union Territory over the two-year period. Of these, 93,765 cases were reported in 2024 and 1,12,695 in 2025.

The Jammu division accounted for the larger share, reporting 1,26,844 cases. Jammu district alone registered 76,824 incidents, followed by Kathua with 17,129 and Udhampur with 8,179 cases. Other districts in the division included Rajouri (7,140), Samba (5,332), Doda (4,111), Reasi (2,752), Poonch (2,023), Ramban (1,772) and Kishtwar (1,582).

In the Kashmir division, 79,616 cases were recorded during the same period, including 38,902 in 2024 and 40,714 in 2025. Srinagar reported the highest number at 35,174 cases, followed by Baramulla (12,882) and Anantnag (10,818). Budgam logged 5,523 cases, Kulgam 3,925, Kupwara 3,725, Bandipora 2,914, Pulwama 2,197, Ganderbal 1,695 and Shopian 462.

The minister said the figures were compiled from data provided by the Directorate of Health Services, Government Medical Colleges and SKIMS. She added that the government is strengthening prevention and treatment systems to deal with the rising number of dog bite incidents.

On stray dog population, the minister said there is no official report indicating an increase within Jammu Municipal Corporation limits. However, a scientific survey conducted by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation in 2023 estimated around 64,416 stray dogs in Srinagar.

To address the issue, the SMC is implementing an Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Vaccination (ABC-ARV) programme and is setting up a third sterilisation and vaccination centre at Ahal Chatterhama to significantly enhance capacity. Authorities said all measures are being carried out in line with Supreme Court guidelines mandating sterilisation, vaccination and release as the approved method for managing stray dog populations.

HAL Says Five Tejas Mk-1A Jets Ready for Delivery to IAF Amid Engine Supply Delays

0

State-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Thursday said that five Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft are fully ready for delivery to the Indian Air Force (IAF), even as overall deliveries remain impacted by delays in engine supplies from US-based GE Aerospace.

In a statement, an HAL spokesperson said the five aircraft are complete and meet the contracted specifications. “HAL confirms that five aircraft are fully ready for delivery, incorporating major contracted capabilities in accordance with the agreed specifications,” the spokesperson said.

An additional nine Tejas Mk-1A aircraft have already been built and flown, HAL said, and will be prepared for delivery once the required engines are received. The company added that all identified design and development issues are being addressed in an expedited manner.

The delivery schedule of the Tejas Mk-1A fleet has been affected primarily due to GE Aerospace missing multiple deadlines for supplying the aero engines needed to power the jets. According to HAL, five engines have been received so far from GE, and the outlook for future supplies is now described as positive and aligned with the company’s delivery plans.

HAL said it is in active discussions with the IAF to ensure early delivery of the aircraft and expressed confidence in meeting its production guidance for the current financial year.

The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter aircraft designed for air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike missions, and is capable of operating in high-threat combat environments.

In February 2021, the Defence Ministry signed a Rs 48,000 crore contract with HAL for procurement of 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets for the IAF. The induction of these aircraft is considered important for the Air Force, whose fighter squadron strength has declined to around 30 against an authorised strength of 42 squadrons.

BharatGen Multilingual AI Engine to Complete Text Services for 22 Languages This Month: Jitendra Singh

0

The government’s sovereign multilingual artificial intelligence engine, BharatGen, is expected to complete its text-based services across all 22 official Indian languages by the end of this month, Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh informed the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Replying to a question by BJP member Bhubaneswar Kalita, the minister said the development of the BharatGen AI platform is a dynamic and evolving process, with scope to include more languages and dialects in future phases.

“We have already completed 15 languages. We will be completing 22 official languages in this month itself. So all the 22 will have text completed by this month and 15 will also have the speech and the vision module,” Singh said.

He noted that while text capabilities will be available in all official languages shortly, speech and vision modules — including voice and image-based processing — have already been developed for 15 languages.

Launched in October 2024, BharatGen is a flagship government initiative aimed at building a sovereign AI ecosystem tailored to Indian linguistic diversity. The platform is designed to support services such as Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) across Indian languages, enabling wider digital access and inclusion.

Officials say the project seeks to strengthen India’s indigenous AI capacity and reduce dependence on foreign language models by building scalable tools suited to local linguistic and governance needs.

Supreme Court to Hear PIL in March Seeking Action Against Poll-Time ‘Freebie’ Promises by Political Parties

0

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to list for hearing in March a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking directions to seize the election symbol or deregister political parties that promise or distribute “irrational freebies” to voters ahead of elections.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi gave the assurance after petitioner-lawyer Ashwini Upadhyaya mentioned the matter and urged early listing. He told the court that notices had already been issued to the Centre and the Election Commission of India (ECI) in 2022 but the matter had not yet been taken up for detailed hearing.

Calling it a serious concern, Upadhyaya submitted that political parties promise excessive benefits during elections to attract voters. “Except Sun and Moon, everything is promised by political parties to voters during elections and this amounts to corrupt practice,” he told the bench. The Chief Justice responded that the issue was important and asked the petitioner to mention the matter again for listing in March.

Earlier, on January 25, 2022, a bench headed by then Chief Justice N V Ramana had sought responses from the Centre and the ECI on the plea, observing that the issue of election freebies was serious and that at times “freebie budget is going beyond regular budget.”

The petition seeks a declaration that promises of “irrational freebies” from public funds before elections unduly influence voters, disturb the level playing field, and vitiate the purity of the electoral process. As an alternative, it asks the court to direct the Centre to enact a law regulating such promises.

Filed through advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey, the plea argues that the growing practice of offering freebies with an eye on elections threatens democratic values and the constitutional framework. It describes such promises as akin to bribing the electorate at public expense.

The petitioner has also sought directions to the Election Commission to amend the Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968, by adding a condition that a recognised political party should not promise or distribute irrational freebies from public funds before elections.

According to the plea, distributing private goods or services that are not for public purposes from government funds violates constitutional provisions, including Articles 14, 162, 266(3) and 282. It contends that unchecked freebie promises undermine free and fair elections and have led to alarming trends in the electoral process.

PM Modi Highlights India–Sri Lanka Spiritual Ties as Holy Devnimori Buddha Relics Display Opens in Colombo

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday underscored the deep civilisational and spiritual ties between India and Sri Lanka as he thanked Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake for inaugurating the exposition of the sacred Devnimori relics of Lord Buddha in Colombo.

The first-ever international exposition of the Devnimori relics — discovered at the Devnimori archaeological site in Gujarat’s Aravalli district — is being held at the Gangaramaya Temple from February 4 to 11. The relics are open for public veneration from February 5 onward.

The exposition was inaugurated on Wednesday by President Dissanayake in the presence of Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Chief Incumbent Ven. Kirinde Assaji Thero at the Gangaramaya Temple.

Welcoming the relics, President Dissanayake said in a post on X that he deeply appreciated Prime Minister Modi and the Government of India for enabling the sacred exposition in Sri Lanka and fulfilling their commitment. He described the occasion as a significant spiritual event for devotees and shared photographs from the inauguration ceremony.

Responding to the message, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the Sri Lankan President for inaugurating the exposition and recalled that the decision to bring the relics to Sri Lanka was taken during his State Visit to the island nation in April 2025. He said the exposition gives people an opportunity to pay their respects and reflects the enduring spiritual connection between the two countries. The Prime Minister also noted that Lord Buddha’s message of compassion, peace and harmony continues to guide humanity.

The Indian High Commission in Colombo said the exposition reflects the deep-rooted spiritual and civilisational links between India and Sri Lanka. It added that the arrival of the relics on February 4 — coinciding with Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day — gave special significance to the event.

This marks the first public veneration of the Devnimori relics outside India. Previously, India organised expositions of the Kapilavastu relics in Sri Lanka in 2012 and the Sarnath relics in 2018.

The Devnimori relics are originally enshrined at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in Vadodara and were transported to Sri Lanka aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft with full state honours.
