Sonia Gandhi Slams Centre’s Silence on Gaza, Calls Modi Government’s Stand ‘Morally Reprehensible’

: Launching a sharp attack on the Narendra Modi-led government, Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday criticised the Centre’s continued silence over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing its stance as “morally reprehensible” and “strategically inexplicable.”

In an opinion article published in The Indian Express, Gandhi accused the government of abandoning India’s long-standing commitment to justice, peace, and support for the Palestinian cause. She argued that New Delhi’s silence has weakened India’s diplomatic standing while distancing the country from its historical allies, including Palestine, Iran, and several nations across the Middle East.

Gandhi alleged that India has failed to respond to growing international concern over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, despite increasing global criticism and legal scrutiny. Referring to findings of a United Nations Commission of Inquiry, she highlighted reports documenting the large-scale destruction of civilian infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and the heavy toll on children during the conflict.

She stated that India’s traditional foreign policy had always been guided by anti-colonial solidarity, respect for sovereignty, and humanitarian values. According to Gandhi, the present government’s silence has undermined those principles and isolated India from the broader international community.

The Congress leader also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic engagement with Israel, describing his visit ahead of the Israel-Iran conflict as a “bewildering strategic decision.” She argued that India has sacrificed both its moral standing and strategic interests while allowing Pakistan to project itself as a mediator in regional affairs.

Gandhi further claimed that several countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, and Latin American nations, have taken stronger positions on the Gaza conflict, while India has remained largely silent despite its historical leadership role among Global South nations.

Calling for a reassessment of India’s foreign policy, Gandhi urged the government to reclaim its independent diplomatic tradition and speak with “moral clarity” on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed Gandhi’s views, stating that her article serves as a reminder that India’s current foreign policy has alienated the country from its long-standing partners in the Middle East. Rahul Gandhi also shared the article, asserting that India should uphold humanitarian values and restore its independent voice in international affairs.

Action Begun on Ayodhya Ram Temple Donation Embezzlement Case, Guilty Will Not Be Spared: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday said action has commenced against those accused in the alleged embezzlement of donations received at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, following the submission of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report.

Addressing a public gathering in Deoria, the Chief Minister asserted that anyone found guilty of misappropriating temple donations would face strict legal action and no one would be granted immunity.

Referring to his earlier announcement made in Ayodhya on June 19, Adityanath said the State Government had constituted an SIT to investigate the allegations and had assured that action would begin immediately after the report was submitted.

“The SIT report has been received, and action has started without delay. As I had promised, the truth will be separated from falsehood, and justice will be ensured,” the Chief Minister said.

Describing Ayodhya as a sacred symbol of Sanatan Dharma and the faith of millions, Adityanath warned against any attempt to undermine public trust or exploit religious sentiments.

“Ayodhya represents the faith of every devotee. No one will be allowed to play with the sentiments of the people. Whoever tampers with the faith of Sanatan Dharma will have to face the consequences,” he said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the government remains committed to maintaining transparency and accountability and emphasized that those responsible for any wrongdoing in connection with temple donations would not be spared under any circumstances.

Shafali Verma’s Blazing Fifty Powers India to Five-Wicket Win Over Bangladesh in Women’s T20 World Cup

Opener Shafali Verma smashed a brilliant half-century as India defeated Bangladesh by five wickets in their Women’s T20 World Cup Group A match at Old Trafford on Thursday, keeping their semifinal hopes alive despite another disappointing fielding display.

Chasing a target of 137, India reached 137/5 in 16.5 overs, thanks largely to Shafali’s explosive 53 off 34 balls, which included an array of attacking strokes against both pace and spin. She brought up her second Women’s T20 World Cup half-century in just 29 deliveries, giving India a commanding start.

After Smriti Mandhana departed early, Shafali dominated the Bangladesh bowlers and guided India to 63/1 in the powerplay. Her innings ended in an unusual manner when she was stumped after attempting a non-existent single off spinner Nahida Akter.

A brief slowdown in the middle overs was overcome by Jemimah Rodrigues, whose quickfire 26 off 15 balls ensured India comfortably crossed the finish line.

Earlier, Bangladesh posted 136/8 after India’s fielding once again came under scrutiny. The Indian side dropped four straightforward catches inside the powerplay, continuing a worrying trend after similar lapses in the previous defeat against South Africa.

Bangladesh opener Juairiya Ferdous was the biggest beneficiary of India’s poor fielding, receiving three reprieves before eventually scoring 33 off 31 balls. Indian fielders Nandni Sharma, Yastika Bhatia, and Radha Yadav were among those guilty of missed opportunities.

Despite the fielding errors, India’s bowlers managed to restrict Bangladesh. Radha Yadav starred with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 28 runs, including the crucial dismissals of captain Nigar Sultana (32) and Sobhana Mostary (22). Spinner Shree Charani delivered an excellent final over, picking up two wickets while conceding just three runs, while Renuka Singh Thakur, making her first appearance in the tournament, struck in her opening over.

India’s discipline with the ball, however, remained a concern as they conceded seven wides and three no-balls.

With the victory, India remain in contention for a place in the semifinals but face a must-win clash against Australia on June 28 to keep their campaign alive.

Powerful Earthquakes Kill 164 in Venezuela; Rescue Operations Intensify Amid Widespread Destruction

Rescue teams continued intensive search and rescue operations across Venezuela on Thursday after two powerful earthquakes struck the country, killing at least 164 people, injuring nearly 1,000, and trapping many beneath collapsed buildings.

The twin earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck within a minute of each other on Wednesday evening, making them among the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century.

According to Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, rescue teams from across the country have been deployed to the worst-hit coastal state of La Guaira, which has been declared a disaster zone due to extensive structural damage and multiple building collapses.

Television footage showed emergency responders using heavy equipment and power tools to search through debris, while three children were successfully rescued alive from the rubble in La Guaira.

The earthquakes caused widespread panic in the capital Caracas, where residents rushed out of swaying buildings and spent the night in parks, parking lots, and other open spaces due to fears of aftershocks. Authorities have urged people not to return to buildings showing signs of structural damage.

The country’s main gateway, Simón Bolívar International Airport, suffered damage and has been temporarily closed. Power outages, disruptions to mobile communication, suspension of metro services, and shutdown of natural gas supplies were also reported in several parts of Caracas.

The Ministry of Education announced that schools will remain closed for several days, with several educational institutions being converted into temporary shelters and relief distribution centres.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck near Morón on Venezuela’s Caribbean coast at a depth of 22 kilometres. A second, stronger 7.5-magnitude quake followed just one minute later at a depth of 10 kilometres, further intensifying the devastation.

Authorities have appealed to private companies to provide heavy construction equipment for rescue operations, while United Nations-certified search and rescue teams are expected to join relief efforts.

Rescue operations remain underway as officials fear the death toll could rise with many people still believed to be trapped beneath collapsed structures.

India Seek Middle-Order Revival Against Bangladesh in Crucial Women’s T20 World Cup Clash

India will look to overcome their middle-order batting struggles and fielding lapses when they face Bangladesh in a crucial Group A encounter of the Women’s T20 World Cup on Thursday.

While India’s top-order concerns have largely eased thanks to impressive performances from openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, the team’s middle order has emerged as a major area of concern heading into the business end of the tournament.

Mandhana has been in excellent form, scoring 159 runs in three matches, while Shafali has contributed 92 runs. Both batters have maintained strike rates above 154, consistently providing India with strong starts.

However, the middle order has failed to capitalize on those solid foundations. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Yastika Bhatia have struggled to maintain the momentum created by the openers, putting additional pressure on finishers Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma.

The statistics reflect India’s concerns. Harmanpreet and Jemimah have managed only 11 boundaries between them in three matches and are yet to hit a six in the tournament. Yastika has struck just three fours in two innings, highlighting the lack of aggression in the middle overs.

Apart from batting issues, India’s fielding standards have also come under scrutiny, with missed opportunities proving costly in key moments.

With a place in the knockout stage at stake, India will be aiming for a complete performance against Bangladesh and hope their middle order finds form at the right time.
