Babubhai Jesangbhai Desai Raises Concern Over Rising Lung Cancer Among Non-Smokers in Rajya Sabha

BJP MP Babubhai Jesangbhai Desai on Friday raised serious concerns in the Rajya Sabha over the increasing incidence of lung cancer among non-smokers, attributing the trend to deteriorating air quality and urging the government to initiate a national screening programme for early detection.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Upper House, Desai cited findings from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, which indicate that out of nearly 1,00,000 new lung cancer cases reported annually in India, about 40 per cent occur in individuals who have never smoked.

“This completely challenges traditional beliefs and reflects the changing nature of this disease,” he said.

Highlighting the role of air pollution, Desai identified PM2.5 particulate matter as a major risk factor. He noted that rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and increasing vehicular emissions are steadily degrading air quality, posing a significant threat to public health.

The MP also pointed out that All India Institute of Medical Sciences is currently conducting detailed research involving around 3,200 individuals to better understand the link between air pollution and cancer.

Desai flagged delayed diagnosis as a major challenge, stating that most lung cancer cases are detected at advanced stages, leading to nearly 70 per cent of patients dying within a year of diagnosis.

“This exposes gaps in healthcare preparedness as well as public awareness,” he added.

While acknowledging the government’s efforts under Ayushman Bharat Yojana for cancer care, he called for urgent measures to curb air pollution, implement a targeted nationwide screening programme, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure and awareness initiatives.

Ram Navami Celebrated with Devotion and Peace Across Kishtwar

The festival of Ram Navami was celebrated on Thursday with deep religious fervour, enthusiasm, and in a serene and peaceful atmosphere across Kishtwar district.

Ram Navami, observed on the ninth day (Navami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Chaitra, marks the birth of Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Thousands of devotees thronged the historic Gauri Shankar Temple at Sarkoot, from where a grand religious procession (Jhanki) commenced and proceeded towards Ram Mandir Kishtwar.

Local temples across the district also witnessed a large influx of devotees, who offered prayers for peace, progress, and prosperity of the district and the Union Territory.

Elaborate arrangements, including security and essential services, were put in place by the civil and police administration to ensure smooth, safe, and orderly celebrations across the district, including at subdivision and tehsil levels.

Local MLA Shagun Parihar, Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma, and SSP Naresh Singh joined devotees at the Gauri Shankar Temple, where the main celebrations were held. They also accompanied the procession and supervised security and overall arrangements.

Among others present were ADC Pawan Kotwal and Dy SP Headquarters Dr. Ishan Gupta, along with other officers from the civil and police administration.

The dignitaries extended greetings on the occasion and prayed for peace, tranquility, integrity, communal harmony, and brotherhood in the district and across the Union Territory.

They also urged the public to uphold values of unity and harmony, calling upon all sections of society to work collectively for sustained peace in the region.

Omar Abdullah Urges Public Not to Panic Over Fuel Supply

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today appealed to the public to refrain from panic buying and avoid crowding petrol pumps, assuring that there is no shortage of fuel, LPG, or essential commodities.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Jammu Marathon Expo, he expressed concern over long queues at fuel stations driven by rumours. He cautioned that such unnecessary panic could create artificial shortages where none exist.

“I earnestly request people to stop camping outside petrol pumps. If this situation continues, I may be forced to shut all petrol pumps for a few days until this cycle of rumours stops,” he warned.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the government has conducted a thorough review and confirmed adequate availability of petrol, diesel, LPG cylinders, and other essential supplies. He added that no directives have been issued to limit consumption.

Addressing the broader situation, Omar said he will participate in an online meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow at 6:30 PM. The meeting will include Chief Ministers of all States and Union Territories and will focus on developments in West Asia, particularly tensions involving Iran and neighbouring regions, and measures to ensure uninterrupted supply chains.

He also expressed concern over misinformation spreading on social media, noting that rumours often gain more traction than official statements.

“It is regrettable that when the Government speaks, no one listens, but everyone believes rumours,” he said.

On Pakistan’s potential role as a mediator in the West Asia conflict, Omar said any effort that contributes to peace should be welcomed.

“If Pakistan helps in ending the war through dialogue, there should be no objection. What matters most is restoring stability in the region,” he added.

Reiterating his assurance, the Chief Minister said there is currently no shortage of petroleum products across the country and urged citizens to act responsibly.

CM Omar Abdullah Says Iran War ‘Unjust And Illegal’, Asks PM To Intervene

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday condemned the “unjust and illegal war imposed on Iran” and requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his influence to end the war in the interest of humanity.Maps

Abdullah made the statement in the Legislative Assembly as the Leader of the House after several National Conference members pressed for a brief statement, despite opposition from the BJP MLAs who said the Iran crisis is an international issue and does not fall in the domain of this House.

“On behalf of myself and my colleagues, I strongly condemn this unjust and illegal war imposed on Iran. I express my deepest condolences over the loss of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his associates and all those who have lost their lives in this conflict,” the chief minister said.

“I also make a sincere appeal to our prime minister to use all available diplomatic channels and relationships to help end this war at the earliest. This will benefit not just us, but humanity as a whole,” Abdullah said. (Agencies)

BJP MLAs’ Protest Over Law University Demand Disrupts Assembly Proceedings

0

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators on Friday staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu as the second phase of the Budget Session commenced.

The BJP MLAs raised slogans while seeking clarity from the government on the proposed location of the university. They said Jammu has long been deprived of premier educational institutions and called for an immediate decision.

The legislators held placards inside the House and continued sloganeering as proceedings began, briefly disrupting normal business.

The second leg of the Assembly’s Budget Session opened amid protests, with opposition parties expected to corner the government over poll promises, regional concerns, and the issue of restoration of statehood.

Meanwhile, in a post on X, Sajjad Lone wrote, “In October last year, CM Omar Abdullah assured the Assembly that National Law University would start functioning from Ompora, Budgam, Kashmir, from 2026. Why no notification has been issued yet to establish Law University in Ompora, Budgam, Kashmir, as per Section 3 of J&K’s NLU Act?

The authority to establish the University rests with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir. If J&K opts for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) conducted by a consortium of more than 20 Law Universities across the country for admissions in these varsities, then chances of starting classes in 2026 are impossible because this examination has already been conducted,” he said. National Conference (NC) leaders, led by Tanvir Sadiq, on Friday staged a protest outside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly expressing solidarity with Iran amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Speaking to the media, Tanvir Sadiq said, “We stand in solidarity with Iran. The entire National Conference and the J&K government stand together. Just as Omar Abdullah had earlier condemned the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, we are here today united. I have given a call attention and moved an adjournment motion.”

“We believe no country has the right to attack another, and the killing of a religious leader in such a manner is condemnable. The top leadership of the country should also condemn it,” MLA Tanvir said.

The protest highlighted the party’s stance on international issues and called for a unified condemnation of violence against religious and political leaders. (KNC)

India Among 5 Nations Granted Passage Through Strait Of Hormuz By Tehran

Iran allowed India and a number of other “friendly nations” including China and Russia to use the Strait of Hormuz for commercial shipping, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has said.

Global oil and gas prices have surged after Iran virtually blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping lane between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, that handles roughly 20 per cent of global oil and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas).

West Asia has been a major source of India’s energy procurement.

“We have permitted certain countries that we consider friendly to pass through (Strait of Hormuz). We allowed China, Russia, India, Iraq, and Pakistan to transit,” Araghchi said, according to Iranian State TV.

At the same time, the Iranian foreign minister made it clear that ships linked to Iran’s adversaries will not be allowed to transit through the strategic waterway.

“We are in a state of war. The region is a war zone, and there is no reason to allow the ships of our enemies and their allies to pass through. But it remains open to others,” he said.

There have been growing global concerns over disruptions in commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, with US President Donald Trump warning Iran of severe consequences if it does not fully reopen the waterway.

In the last couple of weeks, India has made diplomatic efforts focused on ending the conflict in West Asia as soon as possible and ensuring the unimpeded flow of energy through the Strait of Hormuz.

New Delhi thinks there could be serious ramifications for fuel and fertiliser security for many countries including India if the blockade of the shipping lane continues. (Agencies)

Chaitra Navratri has drawn a huge rush of pilgrims to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, with over 2.69 lakh devotees offering prayers at the cave shrine during the ongoing festival.

“The yatra is going on smoothly. There is a huge rush. As many as 2,69,716 pilgrims have paid obeisance at the temple till March 25,” a senior official of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board said.

Hundreds of devotees, chanting ‘Jai Mata Di’, are trekking along the serpentine pathway to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple to pay obeisance.

Chaitra Navratri, being observed from March 19 to March 27, is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Navdurga and holds special significance at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, which records one of its highest pilgrim footfalls during this period.

According to the data, 31,815 pilgrims paid obeisance at the temple on the first day of Navratri on March 19, while 34,805 devotees visited the shrine on March 20, 41,078 on March 21, 43,482 on March 22, 45,478 on March 23, 38,158 on March 24 and 34,900 on March 25.

The registration of pilgrims was suspended twice for brief periods to manage the heavy rush of pilgrims, they said.

Katra, the twin routes and the Bhawan temple area, dazzling with lights and flower-decked decorations, resonate with spiritual fervour and traditional gaiety as the nine-day-long festival of Chaitra Navratri began amid multi-tier security.

Authorities have put in place multi-tier security arrangements at the Katra base camp and en route to the shrine to ensure a safe yatra.

The Board has deployed volunteers to guide pilgrims, manage the anticipated rush and ensure smooth movement along the 13-km yatra route, the official said.

This year, the Shrine Board introduced wireless communication to enhance coordination and communication along the yatra route. A multi-tier security grid involving the police, CRPF, other paramilitary forces and quick-response teams (QRTs) is in place throughout the festival, officials said.

The sacred Shat Chandi Maha Yagya commenced at the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine on March 19, heralding the auspicious beginning of Chaitra Navratri, officials said.

The divine vibrations of Vedic chants and rituals at the holy cave are invoking blessings of peace, prosperity and well-being for all humanity, they said.City & Local Guides
