Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday mobilized citizens across Jammu and Kashmir to join a significant public uprising against drug abuse, announcing a Mega Padyatra to be held on May 3 at the TRC Football Stadium in Srinagar. The initiative aims to foster a drug-free society in the region, appealing especially to the youth.

Sinha expressed optimism as he noted, “I am witnessing a strong and inspiring momentum across the Union Territory towards eliminating the menace of drug abuse.” Calling for collective action, he emphasized the crucial role community involvement plays in the campaign.

“Let us unite and work together to create a safer and healthier Jammu and Kashmir for future generations,” he added. His message highlights that community participation is essential to the success of the anti-drug initiative.

This padyatra contributes to ongoing government efforts to enhance awareness and intensify action against drug abuse throughout the Union Territory. It addresses a critical issue affecting many families and communities.

The administration encourages widespread public participation, recognizing that a united stand will amplify the campaign’s impact and sustainability. Authorities believe that involving citizens in the padyatra will fortify their resolve to combat drug abuse effectively.

As preparations begin for the Mega Padyatra, local organizations and youth groups eagerly await the opportunity to participate in this pivotal movement. The event will serve as a platform for raising awareness about the dangers of drug use and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Experts point out that drug abuse poses serious health risks and threatens the social fabric of communities. By engaging with citizens in open discussions during the padyatra, the government aims to shine a light on the necessity for collective action against this crisis.

Several similar initiatives in the past have proven that community-led efforts can create significant strides in public health issues. By raising awareness and mobilizing citizens, the Sinha administration hopes to replicate successful outcomes from other campaigns.

The Mega Padyatra will not only serve as a demonstration of solidarity against drugs but will also foster a sense of community and responsibility among participants. It marks an important step towards ensuring the future generation leads a drug-free life.

Seven AAP Rajya Sabha MPs Including Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal Quit Party; To Join BJP

In a massive jolt to the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday, seven of its Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak and Ashok Mittal, quit the party.
Addressing a press conference, Chadha, flanked by Pathak and Mittal, said that two-thirds of the Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MPs have quit the party and will join the BJP as a faction.
Chadha said that party MPs Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal are also quitting the AAP.
“AAP, that I nurtured with my blood and sweat and to which I gave 15 years of my youth, has completely strayed from its principles, values and core morals,” he said.
Chadha was recently removed as the deputy leader of AAP in the Rajya Sabha and was replaced by Mittal in the Upper House.
“In the Rajya Sabha, the Aam Aadmi Party has 10 MPs. More than two-thirds of them are with us in this initiative.
“They have already signed, and this morning we submitted all the required documentation, including signed letters and other formal paperwork, to the chairman of the Rajya Sabha,” Chadha told reporters.
Hitting out at Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP, Chadha said that the party is no longer working for the country, but for its own benefit.
“Over the past few years, I have increasingly felt that I am the right person in the wrong party. Today, I announce my decision to move away from AAP and work more closely with the ‘janata’ (public),” he said.
Another Rajya Sabha MP, Sandeep Pathak, said that he had never thought that this situation would arise, but it has.
“For 10 years, I remained associated with this party. And today, I am parting ways with the Aam Aadmi Party,” Pathak said.
On April 15, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids at business entities linked to AAP Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Mittal in Punjab as part of a FEMA probe. (Agencies)

Gold Futures Drops To Rs 1.51 Lakh/10g As Strong Dollar, Oil Surge Weigh On Bullion

Gold prices fell Rs 462 to Rs 1.51 lakh per 10 grams in futures trade on Friday, tracking weak global trends amid a stronger US dollar and rising crude oil rates.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange, the yellow metal for June delivery declined Rs 462, or 0.3 per cent, to Rs 1,51,299 per 10 grams in a business turnover of 8,310 lots.
Analysts said pressure on precious metals came from a firm dollar and elevated energy prices, as well as heightened inflation concerns.
Gold prices declined on Friday. The pressure on the precious metals can be attributed to a stronger US dollar and rising crude oil prices, which have intensified inflation concerns among investors, Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, said.
He added that oil prices were hovering around USD 95.84 per barrel due to geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, which has exacerbated market uncertainty.
In the international market, Comex gold futures for the June contract slipped USD 33.54, or nearly 1 per cent, to USD 4,690.46 per ounce in New York.
Brokerage firm Kotak Securities gold hovered around USD 4,680 per ounce, heading for nearly a 3 per cent weekly loss as prolonged US-Iran tensions and the continued Strait of Hormuz blockade drove oil higher and lifted inflation concerns.
According to analysts, signs of friction between Washington and Tehran persist due to the US Navy’s blockade of Iranian ports.
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, termed the blockade an act of war, while chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said a complete ceasefire would be meaningful only if maritime restrictions are lifted.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump ordered the Navy to act against any vessels laying mines in the crucial shipping route, further dampening hopes for de-escalation.
Analysts said these developments have supported the US dollar’s strength, putting pressure on gold prices in the global markets.
Market participants are now awaiting the final University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment data for further cues on the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy path and the near-term trajectory of bullion prices, Kotak Securities said in a note. (PTI)
