New Delhi, Oct 21: Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid homage to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty on Police Commemoration Day.

Expressing deep gratitude for their service, Shah highlighted the significance of the day, acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by the police and their families to keep the nation safe. “On Police Commemoration Day, I bow to our martyrs, immortalized by their supreme sacrifices in the line of duty,” he posted on X.

Police Commemoration Day, observed annually on October 21, marks the memory of 10 policemen who lost their lives during an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh in 1959. The day is dedicated to honoring their bravery and remembering all police personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Rupee Edges Up by 1 Paisa to 84.06 Against US Dollar in Early Trade

Mumbai, Oct 21 : The rupee gained 1 paisa to reach 84.06 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, rebounding slightly from its previous levels. The recovery was supported by positive trends in domestic equity markets and a softer US dollar, according to forex traders.

However, the rupee’s gains were capped by continued foreign fund outflows and rising crude oil prices. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 84.06 against the greenback, marking a slight improvement from its previous close of 84.07.

The US dollar index, which measures the strength of the dollar against six major currencies, dipped 0.05% to 103.25. Meanwhile, Brent crude futures rose 0.33% to USD 73.30 per barrel, adding pressure on the local currency.

On the domestic equity front, the Sensex surged by 457.90 points, or 0.56%, to 81,682.65, while the Nifty advanced 97.70 points, or 0.39%, to 24,951.75.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers on Friday, offloading shares worth Rs 5,485.70 crore, as per exchange data. Additionally, the Reserve Bank of India reported that India’s forex reserves dropped by USD 10.746 billion to USD 690.43 billion for the week ending October 11, following a decline of USD 3.709 billion the previous week.

New Delhi, Oct 21 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to combat terrorism, infiltration, and efforts to incite religious tension, despite the relative peace established in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeast, and Naxal-affected regions. Speaking at a function on Police Commemoration Day, Shah expressed that the sacrifices made by police martyrs will not be forgotten and reaffirmed the nation’s goal to become fully developed by 2047.

“In the past decade, we have achieved relative peace in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northeastern region, and areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE). However, our fight continues against challenges such as narcotics, cybercrime, infiltration, and terrorism,” Shah stated.

The Home Minister highlighted that since independence, 36,438 police personnel have lost their lives in service to the nation, including 216 in the past year. He assured the families of these martyrs that their sacrifices would not be in vain and that India would remain safe and resilient in achieving its developmental goals.

Shah also discussed the recent implementation of three new criminal laws, which took effect on July 1. He noted that infrastructure work for these laws commenced five years ago and is expected to be completed within the next three years. “India’s criminal justice system will become one of the most modern in the world, ensuring that full justice can be delivered within three years of an FIR registration,” he asserted.

In addressing the welfare of police personnel, Shah announced that under the ‘Ayushman CAPF’ scheme, police and their families can now receive treatment at any Ayushman hospital. He also mentioned the approval for the construction of 13,000 houses to improve living conditions for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel, with 11,276 homes expected to be ready by March next year.

The Police Commemoration Day event took place at the National Police Memorial, where Shah paid floral tributes to the police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. He reflected on the tragic event of October 21, 1959, when ten policemen were ambushed and killed by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh, a moment that led to the annual observance of this day to honor the martyrs and all police personnel who have fallen while serving the nation.

Islamabad, Oct 21 : In a significant move, Pakistan’s National Assembly passed a controversial judicial amendment bill early Monday, limiting the tenure of the chief justice to three years. Following an overnight debate, the 26th Constitution Amendment Bill received support from 225 out of 336 members in the assembly, despite opposition claims that the bill seeks to undermine the independence of the judiciary.

The amendment had previously been approved by the Senate with a vote of 65-4, achieving the necessary two-thirds majority. The ruling coalition required 64 votes in the upper house to pass the amendment, which has now moved to the president for assent and will become law after his signature under Article 75 of Pakistan’s Constitution.

The bill introduces a series of constitutional changes, including the establishment of a special commission responsible for appointing the chief justice from among the three senior-most judges of the Supreme Court. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, who presented the bill in the Senate, emphasized that this “new-face” commission would consist of the Chief Justice, four senior-most Supreme Court judges, two senators, and two National Assembly members—one from each opposition party. He claimed these changes aim to expedite the delivery of justice by the apex court.

A key feature of the amendment is its prohibition of the automatic elevation of the senior-most Supreme Court judge to the chief justice position following the retirement of the incumbent. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq oversaw the proceedings in the National Assembly, which culminated in the bill’s passage.

Following the bill’s approval, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed that the amendment represents not just a legislative change but a demonstration of national solidarity and consensus. He remarked, “A new sun will rise, emanating across the nation.”

However, the opposition vehemently criticized the amendment, suggesting it was designed to prevent Justice Mansoor Ali Shah from ascending to the chief justice role when the current Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa retires on October 25. PTI leader Hammad Azhar condemned the amendment as “a death blow to the independence of the judiciary,” arguing that granting the government the power to appoint judges would politicize the judicial system.

Another PTI figure, Salman Akram Raja, described this moment as “the bleakest in our parliament’s history,” alleging it effectively hands control of the judiciary to the executive branch. PTI leader Ali Zafar raised concerns about coercion within his party, stating that many senators were absent out of fear of abduction.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, chief of the Pakistan People’s Party and a key advocate for the amendment, affirmed the government’s commitment to proceed with the amendment regardless of the PTI’s position. He declared, “We have waited for as long as we could, and today, under any circumstance, this work will be completed.”

New Delhi, Oct 21 – The Congress on Monday strongly condemned the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal, describing it as an “inhumane and despicable act” of targeted violence that will not hinder India’s efforts to develop key infrastructure projects in the region.

The attack, which occurred at a tunnel construction site on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Ganderbal, resulted in the deaths of a doctor and six labourers, according to officials. The terrorists launched the assault late in the evening as the workers had returned to their camp.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a post on X, expressed his outrage, saying, “We strongly condemn the cowardly terror attack in Ganderbal, where several construction workers and a doctor have been killed.” He emphasized that this violence would not deter India’s mission to build critical infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir. “As a nation, we stand united in our fight against terrorism,” Kharge added, offering heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the attack in a post on X, calling the killings of a doctor and migrant labourers a “cowardly and unpardonable crime.” He extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and expressed hope for the recovery of the wounded. Gandhi reiterated that the terrorists’ actions will not disrupt the development process or shake the trust of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “The entire country is united in the fight against terrorism,” he stated.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra echoed similar sentiments, condemning the attack and describing the act of killing innocent civilians as a crime against humanity. In a post in Hindi on X, she said, “Spreading violence and terror among the general public is a heinous act, and the entire nation stands together against it.” She also extended her condolences to the victims’ families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

The Congress leaders collectively reaffirmed the country’s resolve to continue its developmental projects in Jammu and Kashmir, undeterred by the terror attacks.

New Delhi, Oct 19 : Senior AAP leader Satyendar Jain stated on Saturday that his future political responsibilities will be determined by the party and its convener, Arvind Kejriwal. Jain’s remarks came after his release from Tihar Jail on Friday night, where he spent 18 months in connection with a money laundering case.

“I will do whatever our party and Arvind Kejriwal say,” Jain told PTI Videos when asked about his upcoming political role. The Rouse Avenue court granted him bail on Friday afternoon. Jain, once a prominent figure in the AAP government, held various portfolios before his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in May 2022.

Jain condemned the circumstances surrounding his arrest, claiming it was an “atrocity” reminiscent of British rule. He accused the BJP of obstructing the work of the Kejriwal government, particularly initiatives like Mohalla Clinics and the cleaning of the Yamuna River. “It is very unfortunate for the country. All parties need to work in unity for progress,” he remarked.

After his release, Jain met Kejriwal at his residence on Firozshah Road, receiving a warm welcome from party leaders, including Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh, who were present outside Tihar Jail to greet him. Kejriwal shared photos of their meeting on X, expressing, “Welcome back Satyendar!”

Imphal, Oct 19 : Fresh violence erupted in Manipur on Saturday when militants attacked a village in the Jiribam district, an official confirmed. The assault, which occurred around 5 am near the Borobekra police station, involved militants using sophisticated weapons and firing indiscriminately at the village. Bombs were also reportedly deployed during the attack.

In response, personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and local police engaged in a heavy exchange of gunfire with the assailants. Additional security forces were dispatched to the area to reinforce the response.

As a precaution, security forces began evacuating elderly individuals, women, and children to safer locations amid the chaos. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.

Borobekra, situated approximately 30 km from Jiribam town, is enveloped by dense forests and mountainous terrain, making it a challenging area for security operations. The region has seen a series of violent incidents since ethnic clashes erupted in the state in May last year.

This latest outbreak of violence comes just days after discussions were held in New Delhi between legislators from the feuding Meitei and Kuki communities, aimed at reaching a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Bomb Threats Hit Three Vistara Flights; One Diverted to Frankfurt for Emergency

New Delhi, Oct 19: Three international flights operated by Vistara received bomb threats that ultimately turned out to be hoaxes. As a precaution, one aircraft was diverted to Frankfurt, officials reported on Saturday.

A Vistara spokesperson stated that the flights departing from Delhi to London, Paris, and Hong Kong received security threats via social media on Friday. Following protocol, the airline promptly alerted all relevant authorities.

“Vistara flight UK17, operating from Delhi to London, was diverted to Frankfurt as a precautionary measure. The aircraft landed safely at Frankfurt Airport, where we fully cooperated with authorities to complete the necessary checks. The flight was subsequently cleared to continue its journey,” the spokesperson said. The flight later landed in London around 11:40 PM local time on Friday.

The spokesperson also confirmed that flight UK21, en route from Delhi to Paris, landed safely at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. The aircraft was taken to an isolation bay for mandatory security checks and was later cleared to resume operations. Similarly, flight UK161, flying from Delhi to Hong Kong, also landed safely at Hong Kong International Airport, adhering to all security procedures.

In a related incident, Akasa Air announced on Saturday morning that its flight QP 1366, scheduled to fly from Bengaluru to Mumbai on Friday, received a security alert shortly before departure. “As per safety and security procedures, all passengers were deplaned while local authorities followed necessary protocols. We appreciate your understanding as our ground team worked diligently to minimize inconvenience,” the airline stated in a post on X.

Additionally, an Air India Express flight from Dubai to Jaipur made an emergency landing at Jaipur airport early Saturday morning due to a bomb threat, which was later confirmed to be a hoax. Authorities declared an emergency at the airport, and the flight, carrying 189 passengers, landed safely at 1:20 AM. A thorough inspection of the aircraft revealed no suspicious items.

In recent days, over 40 flights operated by Indian carriers have received bomb threats that turned out to be hoaxes. In response, the Civil Aviation Ministry is working to implement stricter regulations to deter such incidents, including adding perpetrators to a no-fly list.
