PDP Chief Urges J&K Govt to Take Swift Action Against Army Personnel for Civilians’ Ill-Treatment

Srinagar, Nov 22: Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday called on the Jammu and Kashmir government to take immediate action against Army personnel involved in the alleged ill-treatment of civilians during an anti-terror operation in Kishtwar district.

Reports suggest that five civilians were reportedly beaten by soldiers during an operation in the Mughal Maidan area on November 20, leaving them injured. Following the allegations, the Army has launched an investigation into the matter.

Mufti condemned the incident, saying, “Allegations of severe torture have emerged from Kishtwar, reminiscent of the disturbing events in Bafliaz Surankote earlier this year.” She specifically mentioned that four men—Sajad Ahmad, Abdul Kabir, Mushtaq Ahmad, and Mehraj-ud-Din from Kuath village—were allegedly summoned to the Army camp for questioning, where they were subjected to extreme physical abuse. According to her, the victims were severely injured and unable to walk, requiring assistance to reach the hospital.

The former chief minister urged the Union Territory government to take swift and decisive action against those responsible, emphasizing the need for accountability to prevent such human rights violations in the future.

In response, the Army’s White Knight Corps issued a statement on Thursday, confirming the operation was launched based on specific intelligence regarding the movement of terrorists in the Kishtwar sector on November 20. The statement acknowledged reports of alleged ill-treatment of civilians during the operation and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted, with appropriate follow-up action taken based on the findings.

Jammu and Kashmir: Two Journalists Booked Over Alleged False Reporting

0

Srinagar, Nov 21: Two media persons from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir have been booked for allegedly publishing false and misleading reports, police said on Thursday.

According to a police official, the incident occurred in Sopore, where the journalists, identified as Mueeb ul Haq from Sopore and Suhail Khan from Delina Baramulla, were accused of misrepresenting a hit-and-run case as a murder case on social media platforms.

The official stated, “On Wednesday, Sopore Police Station received credible information that the two individuals had resorted to wrong reporting, posting frivolous news on social media that misrepresented facts. This misinformation rapidly spread across Sopore, creating the potential for law and order issues. It also hurt public sentiments and cast unwarranted doubt on the investigating agency.”

Following this, an FIR was registered under relevant legal sections, and both journalists were arrested.

The case pertains to an incident on November 5, when Azhar Janwari was injured in a hit-and-run accident. Janwari succumbed to his injuries on November 18 at SKIMS hospital in Srinagar. The accused driver, Nadeem Badam from Sopore, was traced and confessed to the offense, officials said.

Sopore police have urged both the public and the media to avoid spreading unverified information, emphasizing that such actions can disrupt public peace and hinder ongoing investigations.

Trump Nominates Bondi for Attorney General Following Gaetz’s Withdrawal

0

Washington, Nov 22 – President-elect Donald Trump has announced Florida’s former Attorney General, Pam Bondi, as his nominee for U.S. Attorney General. The announcement came hours after Matt Gaetz, Trump’s initial choice, withdrew his name following controversy over allegations of sexual misconduct.

“Today, I am proud to announce Pam Bondi as our next Attorney General of the United States,” Trump said in a statement on Thursday. He praised Bondi’s two decades of experience as a prosecutor and her tenure as Florida’s first female Attorney General, during which she tackled violent crime and led efforts to combat drug trafficking and the Fentanyl crisis.

“Pam will refocus the Department of Justice on fighting crime and Making America Safe Again. She is smart, tough, and an AMERICA FIRST Fighter,” Trump stated, adding that Bondi would help restore the DOJ’s integrity after alleging it had been weaponized against Republicans.

Gaetz, a former Congressman, withdrew his nomination earlier in the day, citing concerns that his confirmation process had become a distraction. “While the momentum was strong, it’s clear my confirmation was unfairly becoming a needless distraction from the critical work of the Trump Transition,” Gaetz wrote on social media.

He emphasized his ongoing commitment to Trump’s vision, stating, “I will forever be honored that President Trump nominated me and remain committed to his success as our President.”

Trump acknowledged Gaetz’s withdrawal and praised his dedication. “Matt has a bright future ahead, and I look forward to seeing all the great things he will accomplish,” he said.

The nomination of Bondi signals Trump’s intent to reshape the Department of Justice as part of his administration’s broader agenda.

Srinagar Shivers at -1.2°C, Season’s Coldest Night Recorded in J&K

0

Srinagar, Nov 22: Night temperatures in Kashmir have continued to drop, with Srinagar recording its coldest night of the season so far, plunging to a chilling minus 1.2°C on Friday. The Meteorological Department reported further drops across the Valley, signaling the onset of harsher winter conditions.

In addition to Srinagar, Pahalgam saw the mercury dip to minus 2.3°C, while Gulmarg recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.6°C. As the cold deepens, residents are flocking to stores, with blankets, quilts, warm clothing, and woolen wear flying off the shelves in Srinagar and other towns. Local vendors on the streets are doing brisk business, with shoppers bargaining for winter essentials.

The drop in temperatures has led to morning frost, with water taps freezing, causing inconvenience for residents who struggle to thaw them. Many people are gathering around small fires to warm themselves and defrost taps. Commuters are facing difficulty as vehicle windscreens are covered with a thin layer of frost, adding to the morning chill.

Kashmiris are preparing for the upcoming 40-day winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ which begins on December 21 and lasts until January 30. During this time, temperatures plummet further, and roads, streets, and pedestrian paths become treacherously slippery, prompting many to stay indoors until the thaw begins.

Areas like Gurez, Tulail, and Zojila Pass have seen intermittent snowfall over the past two weeks, further intensifying the cold. Daytime temperatures hover around 5 to 7°C, making both day and night extremely cold throughout the ‘Chillai Kalan’ period.

Meanwhile, in the Jammu division, temperatures are comparatively milder. Jammu city recorded a minimum of 11.3°C, Katra 10.4°C, Batote 5.6°C, Banihal 2°C, and Bhaderwah 2.6°C.

Imran Khan Arrested in Protest Case Just Hours After Bail in Corruption Case

0

Islamabad, Nov 21: The prospects for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan faded as he was arrested in a protest case just hours after securing bail in an alleged corruption case.

On Wednesday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted Khan bail in the second Toshakhana case, which involved the purchase of an expensive Bulgari jewelry set at a significantly discounted price. This decision sparked hopes of his imminent release.

However, late Wednesday night, Khan was re-arrested by Rawalpindi police in connection with a protest case filed at the New Town Police Station. The police accused Khan of instigating a protest in Rawalpindi on September 28, despite being incarcerated at Adiala Jail.

The charges against him include violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act, defying a government ban on public gatherings, obstructing police duty, damaging police vehicles, and endangering public safety. A police spokesperson confirmed the arrest and stated that a team had been assigned to investigate the case.

Even before the formal arrest, Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar dismissed the possibility of Khan’s release, highlighting that the former prime minister faced charges in eight other cases related to the May 9, 2023 violence. He stressed that Khan would need to secure bail in these cases before being released.

Khan faces a total of nearly two dozen cases across Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad. According to Islamabad police, 62 cases have been registered against him in the capital, while his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party claims that an additional 54 cases have been filed in Punjab province.

In another development, an accountability court held a hearing on the GBP 190 million case at Adiala Jail, where Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were informed that they had not yet submitted responses to the questionnaires issued to them. Bibi was granted an exemption from attending the court on medical grounds, and the hearing was adjourned until November 22.

Meanwhile, the Lahore High Court dismissed a petition filed by Khan’s sister, Noreen Niazi, seeking bail for her brother in all cases against him in Punjab and Islamabad. The court noted that bail petitions must be personally filed by the defendant.

Since Khan’s ousting in April 2022, dozens of cases have been registered against him, which his party claims are politically motivated

NIA Raids 8 Locations in J&K Over Terrorist Infiltration Case

0

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), Nov 21 : The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out raids at eight locations in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as part of an investigation into a terrorist infiltration case.

The raids took place across multiple districts, including Reasi, Doda, Udhampur, Ramban, and Kishtwar, targeting individuals and locations linked to the ongoing probe.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the NIA arrested Muneer Ahmad Banday, a key accused in a 2020 narco-terrorism case involving banned Pakistan-based terrorist organizations. Banday had been evading arrest for four years and was allegedly part of a conspiracy to generate funds for promoting terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of India.

The conspiracy, linked to operatives from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), came to light in June 2020 when Handwara (Kupwara) police intercepted a vehicle at Kairo Bridge. The search led to the seizure of 2 kilograms of heroin and ₹20 lakhs in cash.

According to the NIA, the funds raised through narcotic sales were meant to support terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir via a network of over-ground workers (OGWs).

The agency is intensifying efforts to dismantle the narco-terror network and eliminate terror financing, with a focus on disrupting such activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Investigations are ongoing.
