Final Track Work Completed for Tunnel T-33 Connecting Katra to Reasi

Historic Milestone Achieved in Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project

The ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project marked a historic milestone today with the completion of the final track work for Tunnel T-33, connecting Katra to Reasi.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the news via social media, stating, “The ballast-less track work for the 3.2-km-long Tunnel T-33, located at the foothills of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine and connecting Katra to Reasi, was successfully completed today at 02:00 hrs.”

Project Nears Completion

Official sources confirmed that with the completion of this track work, the USBRL project is expected to be fully operational by the end of this month. The Commissioner of Railway Safety is scheduled to inspect the site on December 16-17. Following six to 12 trial runs of the train along the 17-km stretch between Reasi and Katra Stations, the certification process is anticipated to conclude before year-end.

Excavation for Tunnel T-33, spanning 3,209 meters, was completed last December. Despite challenges such as a shear zone and high water ingress, progress has surged ahead, culminating in this remarkable achievement.

Prime Minister to Inaugurate Final Phase

Spanning a total of 272 km, the USBRL project is a national endeavor to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India through a broad-gauge railway line. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the 17-km stretch between Katra and Reasi in January. The inaugural train is poised to bridge Kashmir and Delhi, covering an 800-km journey in under 13 hours.

Journey of the USBRL Project

The USBRL project has seen a phased development:

  • Phase I: Qazigund-Baramulla (118 km) inaugurated in October 2009.
  • Phase II: Banihal-Qazigund (18 km) inaugurated in June 2013.
  • Phase III: Udhampur-Katra (25 km) inaugurated in July 2014.
  • February 2024: First electric train trial conducted on the Banihal-Katra section.

The project comprises 38 tunnels (total length 119 km) and 927 bridges (total length 13 km), including the iconic Chenab Bridge. This engineering marvel boasts an arch span of 467 meters and a height of 359 meters above the river bed, making it taller than the Eiffel Tower and the world’s highest railway bridge.

Future Prospects

Completion of the USBRL project not only strengthens India’s infrastructure but also enhances connectivity to Jammu and Kashmir, opening doors for tourism and economic development. The electrification and signaling processes are on track for completion, ensuring a smooth rollout of train operations in the new year.

Season’s First Snowfall Brings Chill to Kashmir Valley Minimum Temperatures Drop Across Region Following Snowfall

0

A day after plain areas in Kashmir experienced the season’s first snowfall, minimum temperatures dropped significantly across the valley on Friday, officials reported. The meteorological department has forecasted a cold wave across many areas over the next four days.

Night temperatures plummeted following the snowfall in the higher reaches and some plains of the region. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius, a sharp decline from the previous night’s minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.

Weather Department’s Forecast

The meteorological department indicated that the cold wave is likely to persist in the coming days, urging residents to prepare for colder nights. The snowfall, while welcomed by winter enthusiasts and tourists, has also brought challenges for locals, including disruptions in daily life and transportation.

Regional Impact

Higher altitudes witnessed heavier snowfall, while plains received a moderate layer of snow, transforming the valley into a picturesque winter landscape. The drop in temperatures has increased demand for heating supplies, adding to the region’s seasonal challenges.

Authorities have advised caution, especially for travelers and those residing in remote areas, as road conditions may deteriorate due to icy surfaces.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw: ‘One Nation, One Election’ Is a Positive Step for Development

0

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the benefits of the “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE) initiative on Thursday, describing it as a “positive thought” that would allow India to focus more effectively on development by reducing the frequency of elections. Speaking at the India Economic Conclave organized by Times Now, Vaishnaw elaborated on the advantages of simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.

“There is nothing wrong about it. It is a very positive thought and it is very good for the country,” said Vaishnaw, who also serves as the Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

Cabinet Approval and Legislative Process

The Union Cabinet recently approved a bill to facilitate the implementation of ONOE. While Vaishnaw did not confirm whether the bill would be introduced during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament, he noted that the BJP had clearly outlined its commitment to ONOE in its election manifesto.

“When the bill comes, you will come to know,” he remarked, emphasizing the need to prioritize nation-building over prolonged election cycles.

A Clear Path for Progress

“Why should the country waste so much time in conducting elections when the time for building our nation is the most important priority?” Vaishnaw questioned. He underscored the need for India to focus on its developmental goals for the next 10-15 years without frequent electoral disruptions.

Historical Context and Expert Views

Vaishnaw highlighted that since 1983, there have been 26 instances where the Law Commission, parliamentary committees, or the Election Commission of India have spoken in favor of simultaneous polls. He also mentioned a report on ONOE by a committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which incorporated input from a broad range of stakeholders.

The minister’s comments underscore the government’s intention to advance the ONOE initiative as a transformative step for governance and development in India.

India Backs UN Resolution for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

0

In a significant move, India joined 157 other nations in voting in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, introduced by Indonesia, was approved during the 10th emergency special session of the 193-member assembly on Wednesday.

The resolution called for an end to hostilities, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and compliance with international law, particularly in protecting civilians. Among the nine nations opposing the resolution were Israel and the United States, while 13 countries, including Albania and Ukraine, abstained.

Key Highlights of the Resolution

  • Ceasefire and Hostage Release: The resolution demanded the immediate implementation of a ceasefire, the release of hostages, the exchange of prisoners, and the return of the remains of those killed.
  • Humanitarian Assistance: It emphasized urgent access for the civilian population in Gaza to essential services and humanitarian aid, rejecting any efforts to starve the population.
  • Compliance with International Law: All parties were called upon to adhere to international law, particularly regarding the treatment of detainees and the protection of civilians, including women and children.
  • Two-State Solution: The resolution reaffirmed the commitment to a two-state solution, envisioning Israel and a sovereign Palestinian State living side by side in peace and security.
  • Territorial Integrity: It rejected any attempts at demographic or territorial changes in Gaza and stressed the importance of unifying Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

India’s Stance on Palestine

This vote aligns with India’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Last week, India also voted in favor of another General Assembly resolution titled “Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine,” which called for Israel’s withdrawal from territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. The resolution, tabled by Senegal, received broad support with 157 votes in favor and only eight against.

Humanitarian Focus

The General Assembly’s resolution highlighted the urgent need for unimpeded humanitarian assistance in Gaza. It demanded safe and unhindered delivery of aid across all regions, particularly for civilians in besieged areas. The resolution also stressed the importance of allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes and ensuring the full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

International Reactions

The vote underscores the global community’s call for an end to the escalating violence in Gaza. However, the opposition by Israel and the United States reflects the complexities of achieving consensus on such measures.

India’s affirmative stance reinforces its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause while advocating for a peaceful and just resolution in the Middle East. This vote underscores New Delhi’s commitment to upholding international law and addressing humanitarian concerns amid the ongoing crisis.
