0

In a verdict delivered on Tuesday, a court in Thalassery, Kerala, sentenced nine RSS workers to life imprisonment for the murder of a CPI(M) worker 19 years ago. The case has been a long-standing reminder of the political tensions in the region.

The Incident

On October 3, 2005, Rijith Sankaran, a 25-year-old member of CPI(M) from Kannapuram Chunda, was brutally attacked and killed near a temple in Chunda. The incident occurred during a period of heightened political unrest between the CPI(M) and the RSS in the area.

Rijith was ambushed by the accused, armed with weapons, while he was walking home with friends. The attack left three of his friends injured and resulted in his tragic death.

The Convicts and Charges

The court convicted nine of the ten accused, as one of them had died in a road accident during the trial. The convicts include:

  • Sudhakaran (57)
  • Jayesh (41)
  • Ranjith (44)
  • Ajeendran (51)
  • Anilkumar (52)
  • Rajesh (46)
  • Sreekanth (47)
  • Sreejith (43) (Sreekanth’s brother)
  • Bhaskaran (67)

The convicts were found guilty under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:

  • Section 143: Unlawful assembly
  • Section 147: Rioting
  • Section 341: Wrongful restraint
  • Section 324: Voluntarily causing hurt with weapons

The Verdict

On January 4, the Additional District Sessions Court in Thalassery pronounced the accused guilty, culminating in Tuesday’s sentencing. The life imprisonment sentences underscore the severity of the crime and the judiciary’s commitment to delivering justice.

Background Context

The case is emblematic of the violent political rivalries in north Kerala, especially between the RSS and CPI(M), which have often resulted in clashes and casualties over the years. Rijith’s murder was a flashpoint in this history of conflict.

This ruling brings a measure of closure to the victim’s family and highlights the consequences of politically motivated violence.

Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail to Asaram on Medical Grounds

0

In a significant development, the Supreme Court on Tuesday granted interim bail to the controversial self-styled godman Asaram in a 2013 rape case, citing medical grounds. The bail is valid until March 31, with strict conditions attached to his release.

Medical Considerations and Conditions

A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal acknowledged that the 86-year-old Asaram suffers from multiple age-related health issues, including a severe heart ailment. Taking these factors into account, the apex court agreed to grant him temporary relief.

However, the court imposed a strict directive:
🔹 Asaram must not meet any of his followers during his bail period.

This condition aims to prevent any undue influence or potential misuse of his release.

Background of the Case

Asaram was convicted by a Gandhinagar court in 2023 in connection with a rape case filed by a woman who had lived in his ashram near Gandhinagar when the crime occurred in 2013. He is currently serving a life sentence in this case, apart from being incarcerated in Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan for another rape conviction.

The Supreme Court clarified that its decision to grant bail would be restricted solely to medical considerations, setting aside other aspects of his conviction.

Timeline of Legal Proceedings

  • August 29, 2024: The Gujarat High Court rejected Asaram’s plea seeking suspension of his life sentence, finding no grounds to provide relief.
  • January 2023: The Gandhinagar trial court convicted Asaram in the 2013 case.
  • Current Plea: The Supreme Court sought a response from the Gujarat government regarding his petition, focusing only on his medical condition.

Future Outlook

Asaram’s interim bail period will expire on March 31, and the court has emphasized the temporary nature of this relief. Further hearings will determine the continuation or cessation of his sentence suspension based on health evaluations.

This interim decision reflects the court’s attempt to balance compassion for health issues with strict adherence to legal accountability.

In a significant transition within Indian athletics, Asian Games gold medalist and former shot putter Bahadur Singh Sagoo was elected unopposed as the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Tuesday. Sagoo takes over from Adille Sumariwalla, who held the top position for over a decade.

A New Chapter for AFI

He clinched the men’s shot put gold at the 2002 Busan Asian Games with a throw of 19.03m and participated in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. With a lifetime best of 20.40m, Sagoo’s contributions to Indian athletics were recognized with the Padma Shri award.

His election was confirmed during the two-day Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the AFI. As a member of the AFI Athletes Commission, Sagoo emerged as the sole candidate after Anju Bobby George, the incumbent senior vice president, chose not to contest.

Leadership Updates

  • Sandeep Mehta: Former senior joint secretary of the outgoing council, Mehta has been elected unopposed as the new AFI Secretary.
  • Stanely Jones: Appointed as the Treasurer.

The elections for other posts were similarly uncontested, continuing a trend seen in the previous AGM in 2020.

Legacy of Adille Sumariwalla

Sumariwalla, who served as AFI president since 2012, was ineligible to contest under the National Sports Code. During his tenure, Indian athletics saw historic achievements, including Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and a silver at the Paris Games.

Sumariwalla’s influence extends beyond national borders, as he is currently a member of the executive board of World Athletics, a position of global significance.

Looking Ahead

Sagoo’s election marks the beginning of a new era for the Athletics Federation of India. With his extensive experience as an athlete and administrator, expectations are high for continued progress in Indian athletics on both domestic and international stages.
