Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is slated to present the national budget, including UT-specific grants, in the Parliament on February 1, adding to the anticipation surrounding the financial year.

Mysterious Deaths in Badhaal Village Discussed

The Cabinet meeting also addressed the concerning issue of 17 mysterious deaths in Badhaal village, Rajouri district. 1. Payment of Pending Dearness Allowance (DA): This will benefit government employees and pensioners, ensuring timely payouts.
  2. Three-Tier Faculty Structure for Dental Colleges: The Cabinet approved a new structure for dental colleges in Jammu and Srinagar to ensure better academic quality.
  3. Draft Excise Policy-2025: A new policy framework to streamline excise processes in the region.
  4. Post-Interview Reforms: The Cabinet moved to eliminate oral tests/interviews for posts in Pay Level-6, as recommended by the Services Selection Board.
  5. Amendments to J&K GST Act 2017: Aimed at simplifying and improving the functioning of the Goods and Services Tax system in Jammu and Kashmir.
  6. Environmental & Infrastructure Projects: The Cabinet gave a nod to key initiatives aimed at environmental conservation, such as pollution abatement for Rivers Jhelum and Banganga, and the remediation of legacy waste at Achan dumping site in Srinagar.
  7. Infrastructure Development at SMHS Hospital, Srinagar: A proposal to construct a new hospital block for the emergency operation theatre was also approved.

Looking Ahead: Legislative and Administrative Developments

As the Cabinet proposals make their way to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for approval, the government remains committed to advancing key administrative and legislative reforms. Omar Abdullah’s maiden budget presentation is expected to be a pivotal moment, setting the tone for the financial direction of Jammu and Kashmir in the coming years.

Congress Reaffirms Commitment to Constitution, Demands Apologies from Bhagwat and Shah

0

Ahead of its ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ rally in Belagavi, Karnataka, the Congress party on Monday accused the Constitution of India of being under siege and reiterated its demand that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat must apologise for his “anti-national statement” regarding India’s freedom movement. The rally, which was initially scheduled for December 27, 2024, but postponed due to the passing of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, is set to take place on January 21, 2025.

In a statement on social media platform X, Congress General Secretary for Communications, Jairam Ramesh, recalled that Belagavi was historically significant as the location where Mahatma Gandhi assumed the presidency of the Indian National Congress on December 26, 1924. He stressed that the rally is a reaffirmation of Congress’ commitment to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

“Mahatma Gandhi is being insulted. Dr. Ambedkar is being attacked. The Constitution of India and its values are under assault,” Ramesh stated, reflecting the party’s strong stance ahead of the rally. The event in Belagavi will be followed by another rally at Mhow — Dr. Ambedkar’s birthplace — on January 27, 2025, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Constitution and the founding of India’s republic.

Ramesh also demanded an apology from Mohan Bhagwat, accusing him of delivering an “atrocious, anti-national” statement regarding the freedom movement during a recent speech. Bhagwat had controversially stated that India’s “true independence” was established on the day of the Ram temple’s consecration in Ayodhya, claiming that the country had faced centuries of “para chakra” (enemy attacks) and that the consecration marked the true moment of independence.

The Congress party swiftly condemned Bhagwat’s comments, with Ramesh calling for an apology, labeling the statement as “anti-national.” The party also continued to target Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding that he resign and apologise for his remarks in Parliament on December 17, 2024, which the Congress claims insulted Dr. Ambedkar and his legacy.

Last week, Ramesh had already slammed Bhagwat’s statements, calling them an affront to India’s history and its struggle for independence. The Congress leadership, in a strong and unified voice, has continuously accused the BJP and RSS of undermining the values championed by Ambedkar, especially in light of Shah’s controversial comments during a Rajya Sabha debate on the Constitution.

The Mhow rally on January 27 will commemorate not only the 75th anniversary of India’s Constitution but also address what Congress views as ongoing attacks on the legacy of Babasaheb Ambedkar by the current ruling regime. The party has warned that these events will highlight the growing concerns over the BJP’s attitude toward the Constitution and the ideals that it represents.

Following the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh on December 26, the Congress party had announced a seven-day period of mourning, cancelling all official programs, including the foundation day celebrations. Singh, who was 92, was a key figure in shaping India’s modern economic landscape, and his death marked a significant moment in Indian politics.

The Congress party’s rallies are shaping up to be a strong statement in defense of the Constitution and a call for accountability from those whom the party accuses of undermining its core values.

Shruti Kotwal Eyes 2026 Winter Olympics Qualification at Asian Winter Games

0

Indian speed skater Shruti Kotwal is gearing up for the upcoming Asian Winter Games (AWG) in Harbin, China, set to take place from February 7 to 14. The event will serve as a crucial platform for Kotwal to qualify for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Italy.

Currently training in the United States, Kotwal will lead a 41-member athlete contingent representing India at the AWG. Speaking about her preparations and the upcoming competition, Kotwal emphasized the significance of the event as a major opportunity to test herself against some of the best skaters globally.

“I’m focusing on the 500m and 1000m events for Olympic qualification. The timing requirements are incredibly challenging – sub-40 seconds for the 500m and under 1:20 for the 1000m. My Indian national record is 41.97 seconds, and I need to skate under 40 seconds to qualify,” Kotwal shared with SAI Media.

This will be Kotwal’s second appearance at the AWG after participating in the 2017 edition, which was held in Japan. Reflecting on her previous experiences, Kotwal acknowledged the stiff competition posed by countries like South Korea, Japan, and China, known for producing technically and physically exceptional skaters.

“Countries like South Korea, Japan, and China consistently produce strong skaters who are technically and physically exceptional. I’ve faced some of these competitors in previous events and understand their strengths. It’s a tough field,” said the 33-year-old from Pune.

Indian speed skaters have been training in Korea in preparation for the AWG, with athletes from at least 24 nations expected to compete in the event.

Kotwal also highlighted the importance of the Khelo India Winter Games as a key platform for aspiring skaters to make their mark internationally. “Khelo India Winter Games brings everybody together. It really helps to promote the sport. We didn’t have that when we started and I think the skaters now are very lucky,” she said.

The first leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 is scheduled to begin in Ladakh on January 23. The skating events will be held at the NDS Stadium and the Gupuks Pond in Leh, where at least 150 ice speed skaters will showcase their skills.

As Kotwal prepares for the Asian Winter Games and her pursuit of Olympic qualification, the country watches with anticipation, hoping for another remarkable achievement on the global stage.

Kolkata Court Sentences Sanjay Roy to Life Imprisonment for Rape and Murder of Doctor

0

In a landmark decision, a Kolkata court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment till death for the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah passed the sentence on Monday, after Roy was convicted of the heinous crime committed on August 9, 2024.

The brutal incident, which shocked the city and the nation, led to widespread and prolonged protests, especially among medical professionals, as the victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was assaulted while performing her duties at the hospital. The case sparked debates and demands for stricter punishments for crimes against women.

During the proceedings, Judge Das stated that while the crime was horrific, it did not fall under the “rarest of the rare” category, which would have warranted a death penalty. As a result, Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment, with no possibility of release. The judge also ordered the state government to pay a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the victim’s family for their loss.

Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was convicted under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (punishment for causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In the court’s final statement, it acknowledged the gravity of the crime and emphasized the necessity of ensuring justice for the victim’s family.

In a brief statement after the sentencing, the family of the deceased doctor expressed their satisfaction with the court’s verdict. They, however, reiterated their call for stronger laws and better protection for healthcare workers, particularly women, working on the frontlines of the medical profession.

The trial had drawn significant attention and was seen as a pivotal moment in the fight for women’s safety in India. Medical professionals, activists, and members of the public had rallied in support of the victim’s family, calling for swift and just action against the perpetrator.

As the city absorbs the shock of the verdict, the attention now turns to ensuring better protection and safety measures for women in public service and healthcare, so that such a tragic incident is never repeated.

Congress Confident of Delhi Poll Victory, Promises Key Guarantees

0

Ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Congress leader Sachin Pilot expressed confidence that his party will emerge as the “better option” for voters, amidst the ongoing power struggle between the AAP-led Delhi government and the BJP-led central government. Pilot, speaking to the press, stated that the people of Delhi have been suffering due to the battle for supremacy between these two political entities.

He assured that Congress is prepared to deliver a strong performance in the elections, citing the party’s track record of development under the leadership of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. “There is a battle of supremacy between the Delhi government and the central government, and the people are suffering in this,” Pilot remarked. “The Congress party has emerged as the better option, and the people of Delhi will vote for us,” he added confidently.

Congress’ Five Guarantees for Delhi Voters

In a bid to address the concerns of the citizens and secure their mandate, Congress has promised five key guarantees for the Delhi polls:

  • LPG Cylinders at Rs 500
  • Free Ration Kits and 300 Units of Free Electricity
  • Monthly Grant of Rs 2,500 for Women under ‘Pyaari Didi Yojana’
  • Free Health Insurance Cover of Up to Rs 25 Lakh under ‘Jeevan Raksha Yojana’
  • Financial Assistance of Rs 8,500 per Month for Educated Unemployed Youths for One Year

Pilot emphasized that these guarantees aim to uplift the citizens of Delhi, particularly women and the youth, while also addressing key concerns like inflation and unemployment. The former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan also reminded voters of the significant development achieved during the Congress-led government under Sheila Dikshit, which left a lasting impact on the city’s infrastructure and public welfare.

Opposition Unity and The INDIA Bloc

Regarding the broader opposition alliance, the INDIA bloc, Pilot praised the leadership of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi for uniting various opposition parties to challenge the NDA in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He noted that this collective effort had resulted in positive outcomes, reinforcing the idea that the opposition can effectively compete with the ruling BJP-led alliance.

Delhi Elections: A Tough Battle Ahead

As the 70-member Delhi Assembly prepares for elections on February 5, 2025, all eyes are on the performance of the key contenders. In the previous two elections, the AAP had secured overwhelming victories, winning 67 seats in 2015 and 62 seats in 2020. The BJP, while consistently securing seats, has not been able to mount a significant challenge in the capital, winning just three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020. Congress, on the other hand, failed to secure a single seat in both elections but is hopeful that this time, with its new promises and strong campaign, it will make a significant comeback.

The results of the Delhi Assembly elections will be announced on February 8, 2025, and the political landscape in Delhi could undergo significant changes as Congress seeks to regain its foothold in the city’s governance.

India Takes Global Lead in Disaster Management: Amit Shah Highlights Achievements and Future Goals

0

Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised India’s remarkable strides in disaster management, noting that the country has emerged as a global leader in the sector through resilient infrastructure and a proactive approach. Speaking at the 20th Foundation Day celebrations of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) at Kondapavuluru, Shah highlighted the country’s commitment to a “zero casualty” goal during disasters, a major shift from the traditional relief-centric approach.

India’s Shift to a Rescue-Centric Approach

Amit Shah emphasized the Modi-led government’s transformation of disaster management strategies. Previously, disaster management was primarily relief-driven, but now, under the current administration, the focus has shifted to saving lives with a “rescue-centric” approach. This 360-degree change in methodology has significantly contributed to reducing casualties in the wake of natural calamities, he added.

India’s success in disaster-resilient infrastructure was underscored by the establishment of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), which now includes 48 countries. The efforts of the NDRF and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in this direction have earned India global recognition, with the NDRF’s impact felt beyond national borders, in countries such as Nepal, Indonesia, Turkey, and Myanmar.

NDRF’s Global Recognition and Achievements

Shah praised the NDRF for its credibility and effectiveness, both within India and internationally. He recounted the tragic toll of past cyclones, citing a deadly cyclone in Odisha that claimed 10,000 lives, compared to more recent disasters where the “zero casualty” goal was achieved despite severe conditions.

The Home Minister also highlighted the Modi government’s substantial investments in disaster management, referencing the allocation of Rs 61,000 crore for disaster management through the 14th Finance Commission, a significant increase compared to the Rs 12,500 crore allocated during the 12th Finance Commission. These investments have empowered the NDRF and NDMA to act swiftly and effectively during calamities.

Support for Andhra Pradesh: Over Rs 3 Lakh Crore in Projects Approved

During the event, Amit Shah also affirmed the central government’s unwavering support for the development of Andhra Pradesh. He announced that the Centre had approved over Rs 3 lakh crore in projects for the state in just the past six months. Shah detailed specific financial provisions for key state projects, including Rs 27,000 crore for the development of Amaravati, the capital city, through HUDCO and the World Bank.

Strengthening Ties with Andhra Pradesh

Shah also took the opportunity to address political developments in Andhra Pradesh, urging the state’s citizens not to dwell on the previous administration’s shortcomings. He expressed confidence that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, along with Prime Minister Modi, would accelerate efforts to further develop the state. The Union Minister reiterated the central government’s firm support for Andhra Pradesh’s growth and recovery, pointing to the ongoing efforts for the revival of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and funding for the Polavaram Irrigation Project.

National Police Academy Initiatives

Further emphasizing the government’s focus on strengthening national infrastructure, Shah virtually laid the foundation for an Integrated Indoor Shooting Range at the National Police Academy (NPA) in Hyderabad. This new facility will enhance the training capabilities of IPS probationary officers in firearm skills, further bolstering the preparedness of India’s police forces.

A Vision for the Future

As the event concluded, Shah confidently predicted the continuation of the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) political success, asserting that after recent victories in Maharashtra and Haryana, the NDA is poised to form the government in Delhi in early 2025. His speech reaffirmed the government’s resolve to serve the people, both in the face of natural and man-made crises.

With continued investments in disaster management, infrastructure development, and security, India remains committed to becoming a resilient, disaster-prepared nation, while ensuring rapid recovery and sustainable development for all states, especially Andhra Pradesh.

A Glimmer of Hope for Dessa: Road Survey Underway After 75 Years of Isolation

Dessa, a remote village nestled in the hilly terrain of Doda district, has endured over seven decades of isolation without proper road connectivity, leaving its population of more than 25,000 people to live amidst continuous struggles. The absence of roads has created immense hardships, particularly in accessing essential services such as healthcare, education, and emergency transport. However, a recent development has brought new hope to this long-forgotten region.

The Struggle: A Life in Isolation

The harsh winters in Dessa have made the lack of road connectivity even more dangerous. Villagers often find themselves forced to carry critically ill patients on makeshift stretchers over several kilometers to the nearest motorable road. These treacherous journeys have, in the past, led to tragic losses. Despite these challenges, the people of Dessa have remained resilient, enduring isolation without any substantial support from authorities for many years.

For decades, promises of development and road construction have been made but never fulfilled. With most of its hamlets remaining disconnected from the road network, Dessa’s scenic beauty and moderate climate have gone unnoticed, leaving it as an untouched gem with untapped potential.

A Ray of Hope: Road Survey Under PMGSY

In a much-awaited move, the government has initiated a road survey in Dessa under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). The news has sparked a sense of optimism among the villagers, who have long yearned for better infrastructure. The elderly, sick, and children, who have suffered immensely due to the lack of connectivity, now pin their hopes on this development.

Advocate Sunnet Thakur, a prominent voice from Dessa, expressed the long-held frustration of the village. “The people of Dessa are excited that, after 75 years, a road survey has finally been conducted. We urge the Government to start the construction of these roads as soon as possible. Without proper connectivity, elderly people, the sick, and pregnant women are facing severe difficulties every day,” Thakur said, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.

Dessa’s Dream for Development

Dessa, located approximately 40 kilometers from the district headquarters, has witnessed little to no development over the years. While the villagers have remained steadfast, many have been forced to migrate to urban areas in search of better opportunities for their children. Those who remain continue to live under difficult circumstances.

Shakti Parihar, the newly elected Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Doda West, acknowledged the failure of previous governments in addressing the region’s infrastructure needs. “It is unfortunate that successive Governments have neglected the road connectivity issues in Doda district. During my previous term as MLA and Minister, I worked to connect many remote villages to the main road network. Now, we are committed to providing road connectivity to every single hamlet with a population of at least 250 people in the fourth phase of PMGSY,” Parihar said.

A Commitment to Change

The ongoing road survey, part of PMGSY Phase-4, aims to connect areas like Dessa, Kashtigarh, Marmat, and Khellani to the main road network. Harvinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Doda, confirmed the plan to bring road connectivity to areas with populations of 250 or more. “The survey is not limited to Doda but extends to all areas that still lack roads,” Singh explained.

With the preliminary survey expected to be completed by January 31, 2025, Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will soon follow, setting the stage for the construction of much-needed roads in the region.

The Path Forward: A Connected Future

The villagers of Dessa now have renewed hope that their years of isolation are coming to an end. “We were waiting for this moment all our lives. After electricity came to our village after 75 years, this road survey feels like another positive sign after decades of isolation,” said Ramesh Kumar, a resident of Dessa. The villagers are cautious but hopeful, wishing for roads to be constructed without causing damage to their homes or the environment.

As the region prepares for a brighter future, the promise of road connectivity represents the first step in a larger vision for development. Advocates like Sunnet Thakur continue to press for further improvements, such as mini hydroelectric power plants, proper schools, a degree college, and a micro Primary Health Centre (PHC) to ensure that the residents of Dessa can lead dignified lives.

The Road Ahead: A Community’s Vision

With this road survey, a long-standing promise of development is finally within reach. The community of Dessa is poised to embrace the future, with hopes that their long-awaited dream of a connected, prosperous life will soon be a reality. With the survey underway and the promise of road construction on the horizon, Dessa’s isolation may soon be a thing of the past.
