Supreme Court Dismisses Plea on Internet Price Regulation

0

New Delhi, February 2025: The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking regulation of Internet prices in the country.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar dismissed the plea filed by Rajat, stating that consumers had multiple options for availing Internet services.

“It’s a free market. There are several options. BSNL and MTNL are also giving you Internet,” the bench observed.

The petitioner alleged that the majority of the market share was controlled by Jio and Reliance, raising concerns about monopolistic practices.

The bench responded by stating,

“If you are alleging cartelisation, then go to the Competition Commission of India.”

However, the top court clarified that if the petitioner wished to seek recourse through appropriate statutory remedies, he was at liberty to do so.

JKPCC Chief Tariq Hameed Karra Slams BJP Over Statehood Commitment

Jammu, February 2025: Claiming that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are suffering badly due to the absence of powers with the elected Government, JKPCC chief Tariq Hameed Karra today asked BJP to explain whether the commitment to restore Statehood was another ‘Jumla’ of the Modi Government.

Addressing a workers’ convention of District Jammu Rural in the Muthi area of Jammu, Karra questioned the local BJP for its silence over the neglect of the most popular demand of the people of J&K. He criticized the BJP for failing to fulfill promises made before Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the people of J&K during recent Assembly elections.

Karra further asserted that the Congress Party would not rest until the Central Government fulfills its commitment to restore Statehood. He also pointed out the silence of local BJP leaders and MLAs despite securing a huge mandate from the people.

“Is this not a continued deceit of the Centre over the most fundamental demand of the general public and their rightful claim?” he questioned.

He emphasized that people in J&K are suffering due to the lack of an elected government, and various sections, including unemployed youth, daily wagers, contractual employees, adhoc workers, NHM employees, Anganwadi and Asha workers, and SPOs, continue to wait for justice from the government.

Karra highlighted that Dogras are the worst affected, having lost their identity, status, dignity, and rights to protect their land, jobs, and natural resources. He accused the BJP of allowing outsiders to exploit the region and suppressing Dogra culture, language, and peaceful co-existence.

“Congress has a history of sacrifices before and after independence, with two Prime Ministers sacrificing their lives, while the BJP carries a legacy of ‘Mafinama’ politics and now seeks certificates of nationalism from Congress,” he added.

Congress Leaders Speak on People’s Rights

Addressing the gathering, Tara Chand spoke about the Congress Party’s role in uniting people and uplifting the downtrodden, ensuring that Dalits occupied prime positions in government through constitutional reservations.

Raman Bhalla referred to the large-scale development during the ten years of UPA rule and coalition government in J&K, but lamented that the Modi Government arbitrarily snatched the region’s identity and rights while now attempting to mislead the people.

Delhi CM-Designate Rekha Gupta Assures Rs 2,500 Monthly Financial Aid for Women

0

Delhi Chief Minister-designate Rekha Gupta on Thursday assured that the BJP government would fulfill its poll promise to provide Rs 2,500 monthly financial assistance to women. Gupta confirmed that the first installment of the monthly support would be credited to women’s accounts by March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

During the election campaign, the BJP’s manifesto aimed to surpass the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) pledge of Rs 2,100 monthly support, should it come to power. Gupta, who was elected leader of the BJP legislature party on Wednesday, emphasized that delivering on their promises was her top priority.

“Fulfilling the dream of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the responsibility of all 48 BJP MLAs in the capital. We will definitely fulfill all our promises, including financial support for women. Women will 100% get monetary support in their accounts by March 8,” she said.

The BJP’s victory in the Delhi Assembly elections was decisive, with the party winning 48 out of 70 seats, bringing an end to the AAP’s decade-long rule.

Gupta, a former Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president and municipal councilor, will be sworn in as Delhi’s fourth woman CM at a grand ceremony at Ramlila Maidan in the afternoon, in the presence of Prime Minister Modi and other dignitaries.

Batting first after Pakistan won the toss, New Zealand posted a challenging total of 320/5 in their 50 overs, powered by brilliant centuries from Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118 not out). Glenn Phillips also contributed with a blistering 61 off 39 balls to further boost the total.

In reply, Pakistan could only manage 260 all out in 47.2 overs. Key contributions came from Babar Azam (64) and Khushdil Shah (69), with Salman Agha providing some resistance with a quick-fire 42 off 28 balls. However, it wasn’t enough as the New Zealand bowlers restricted Pakistan’s chase.

Will O’Rourke was the standout bowler for New Zealand, picking up 3/47 and playing a crucial role in dismantling Pakistan’s batting order.

India’s Crucial Opening Match Against Bangladesh in Champions Trophy

0

India enters the Champions Trophy with a turbulent recent cricketing past, making a strong performance imperative, particularly in their opening match against a tricky Bangladesh. This encounter will serve as the first test in addressing several existential questions surrounding this Indian team.

Key Questions for India

Despite being pre-tournament favorites, India’s lineup faces multiple uncertainties. Questions loom over the Indian bowling unit’s ability to cope with the absence of pace stalwart Jasprit Bumrah, whose injury has created a void. Similarly, can Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma rediscover their former glory, or will the pressure of the competition prove too much for these iconic players? Furthermore, the pressure is on young talents like Shubman Gill to deliver consistently under the spotlight of a multi-nation event.

For India, the Champions Trophy provides the ideal setting for their stars, particularly in the ODI format, where their experience and skill can shine. It’s essential that they perform well, both as a team and individually, to restore confidence.

A High-Stakes Tournament

With the recent setbacks against New Zealand and Australia, players like Kohli, Rohit, and even head coach Gautam Gambhir—who is only six months into his tenure—are under pressure. The losses have created shockwaves that have yet to subside, making a solid showing in the Champions Trophy critical for all involved.

Positive Signs Ahead

On a positive note, Rohit Sharma recently made a century against England, and Virat Kohli scored a half-century. Additionally, Gambhir has overseen dominant victories in recent T20Is and ODIs, with a 4-1 win in T20Is and a 3-0 win in ODIs. Moreover, Shubman Gill has been in exceptional form, winning Player of the Series after scoring two fifties and a century in three ODIs against England.

However, the competition in the Champions Trophy will be much tougher than the more comfortable home series. Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand—India’s opponents in Group A—are highly motivated teams, and even a single defeat could dramatically change the equation in the league stage.

India’s Selection Dilemmas

India’s team management faces a few selection conundrums as they prepare for their first match against Bangladesh. One of the primary decisions involves KL Rahul’s batting position. Will he bat at No. 5, his most productive slot, or will he be shifted to No. 6, with Axar Patel moving up one place? Rahul batted at No. 6 in the first two matches against England before returning to No. 5 in the final ODI. The team management could remain flexible, taking a call based on match conditions.

A bigger challenge, however, lies in India’s bowling lineup. With Bumrah’s injury, the team faces an uphill task in finding a new-ball partner for Mohammed Shami, who will need to raise his game. It’s expected to be a toss-up between Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana. Rana has impressed with his pace and bounce, but Arshdeep’s left-arm angle and variety make him the likely candidate to partner Shami.

India is also likely to go with three spinners, including Hardik Pandya as the fast-bowling all-rounder. The third spinner remains a point of contention, with a choice between Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy. Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner, seems to have the edge based on recent form, but Kuldeep has shown his readiness with impressive performances in the nets.

Bangladesh’s Weaknesses

While Bangladesh is facing turmoil with the absence of star player Shakib Al Hasan, they remain a formidable opponent. However, India will not take any chances, as Bangladesh has historically been a potential “banana peel” for them in global events, often causing upsets.

Teams for the Match

India: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakravarthy.

Bangladesh: Nazmul Hossain Shanto (c), Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan, Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, MD Mahmud Ullah, Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Rishad Hossain, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Parvez Hossai Emon, Nasum Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Nahid Rana.

Over 50 Lakh Nepalese Devotees Attend Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj, Participate in Sacred Rituals

0

Over 50 lakh devotees from Nepal have gathered at Prayagraj to take part in the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest cultural gathering. The devotees participated in the sacred ritual of taking a holy dip in the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers, as per official sources.

A Global Gathering at Maha Kumbh

The event, organized under the leadership of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has drawn millions of devotees from across the world, with Nepali pilgrims playing a significant role in the occasion. Sources revealed that Nepali devotees brought holy Akshat (rice) and other sacred offerings from Janakpur — the hometown of Maa Sita, Lord Ram’s wife, to offer at the Bade Hanuman Temple at the Sangam. In return, they are carrying back Ganga water and sacred sand from the confluence, which they consider an invaluable spiritual heritage.

Pilgrimage to Ayodhya and Kashi

Apart from the holy dip in Sangam, many Nepali devotees are visiting Ayodhya to witness the construction of the grand Shri Ram Temple and are also making pilgrimages to Kashi, home to the famous Baba Vishwanath Temple. The sacred Ganga water and sand from Sangam are being taken back to Nepal, where they are used in various religious ceremonies, further strengthening the spiritual bond between the two nations.

Devotees Bring Sacred Offerings

Ram Sigdel, President of the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Banke Chapter), shared that the Akshat brought from Janakpur was offered at the Bade Hanuman Temple on the banks of Sangam. He emphasized the significance of Sangam’s sand and Ganga water, describing them as priceless heritage for Nepali devotees.

Appreciation for Arrangements

The arrangements made by the Yogi-led UP government for the Maha Kumbh Mela have been widely appreciated, with many visitors, including the Nepali devotees, acknowledging the seamless management of the event. The well-organized facilities have ensured a smooth and hassle-free experience for pilgrims coming from across the globe.

Gifts from Nepal and Cultural Prosperity

Devotees have also brought gifts from Nepal to enrich the religious prosperity of the event. These include new clothes, jewelry, fruits, dry fruits, and traditional items like dhoti-kurta and towels. These symbolic gifts, representing the cultural and spiritual wealth of Nepal, add to the sacred atmosphere of the Maha Kumbh.

With the growing importance of religious sites like the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the Vishwanath Dham Corridor in Kashi, Nepalese devotees are increasingly drawn to visit these spiritual landmarks. The convergence of lakhs of devotees from Nepal to the Sangam has further amplified the divine aura of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, making it an unforgettable religious and cultural experience.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new BJP government, led by Gupta, is set to take place on Thursday afternoon at the iconic Ramlila Maidan, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries will be present. This ceremony will mark a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape.

BJP’s Historic Victory

Gupta’s leadership comes after the BJP secured a decisive win in the recently concluded 70-member Delhi Assembly elections. The party claimed 48 seats, effectively ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) decade-long rule in the capital. Gupta will also become the fourth Chief Minister from the BJP in Delhi, following in the footsteps of Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj.

Notably, Gupta will be the only incumbent woman Chief Minister in any BJP-ruled state. Her leadership signals a significant shift in Delhi’s political dynamics and the BJP’s growing influence in the national capital.
