Cricket Set for Olympic Comeback at LA28, ICC Welcomes Venue Announcement

0

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially welcomed the announcement of the Fairgrounds in Pomona, Southern California, as the venue for cricket’s long-awaited return to the Olympic stage at the Los Angeles 2028 Games (LA28).

This marks a historic moment for the sport, which will be returning to the Olympics after a 128-year hiatus. The cricket competition at LA28 will feature six teams each in both the men’s and women’s T20 formats — the version of the game globally recognized for its fast pace and growing mass appeal.

ICC Chair Jay Shah hailed the development as a significant step forward for the sport’s global outreach. “We welcome the announcement of the venue for cricket at Los Angeles 2028 as it is a significant step towards the preparation for our sport’s return to the Olympics,” said Shah.

“Although cricket is already one of the most popular sports in the world, featuring it in the Olympics through the dynamic T20 format is a golden opportunity to take the game beyond its traditional strongholds and captivate new audiences,” he added.

Expressing gratitude towards the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and LA28 organisers, Shah reaffirmed ICC’s commitment to making cricket a resounding success at the Games. “We look forward to working closely with the IOC, LA28, and our Members in the lead-up to this monumental event,” he said.

Cricket last featured in the Olympics in 1900 at the Paris Games, making LA28 its long-overdue return. The sport was officially included following an IOC session in Mumbai in October 2023.

At LA28, cricket joins four other new additions to the Olympic programme: baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.

The T20 format, which has played a vital role in the sport’s global expansion, has previously featured in multi-sport events such as the Asian Games (2010, 2014, and 2023) and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, where a women’s competition was held.

As preparations begin for LA28, cricket’s inclusion is being seen as not only a nod to its vast global following but also a strategic move to broaden the Olympic Games’ global appeal.

Congress Protests ED Chargesheet Against Gandhis in National Herald Case

0

Congress workers staged a protest outside the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters at 24, Akbar Road, denouncing the recent Enforcement Directorate (ED) chargesheet against senior party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

The ED filed the chargesheet on April 9, implicating Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, and Suman Dubey in a money laundering case related to the National Herald newspaper. The charges are under Sections 3 and 4 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), which pertain to money laundering and its associated penalties.

Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, present at the protest, criticized the government’s actions, stating, “This is a 12-year-old case where not a single penny has been exchanged. The government is targeting the Gandhi family and the Congress, but we will fight them tooth and nail.”

The ED’s move comes shortly after initiating proceedings to seize immovable assets worth ₹661 crore linked to the National Herald and its publisher, Associated Journals Limited (AJL). Notices were issued to property registrars in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow to take over AJL assets under the PMLA.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh condemned the chargesheet, labeling it as “politics of vendetta” and accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of misusing investigative agencies. He asserted that the Congress and its leadership would not be silenced.

The National Herald case centers on the alleged acquisition of properties worth over ₹2,000 crore by AJL, which were later transferred to Young Indian, a company in which Sonia and Rahul Gandhi each hold a 38% stake. The case originated from a 2014 complaint by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and has been upheld by both the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi have been out on bail since 2015 in connection with this case.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne has taken cognizance of the chargesheet, with the matter scheduled for hearing on April 25.

Inauguration of Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Train Postponed Due to Weather Conditions

The much-anticipated inauguration of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express, initially scheduled for April 19, has been postponed due to adverse weather forecasts. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was set to flag off the inaugural run of this high-speed train, marking a significant milestone in connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. However, the India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall and inclement weather conditions in the region on April 18 and 19, leading to the deferment of the event.

New Inauguration Date to Be Announced

The Prime Minister’s Office has stated that a new date for the inauguration will be announced soon. The decision to postpone was made considering the safety and logistical challenges posed by the expected weather conditions. The Prime Minister was also scheduled to inaugurate the Chenab Rail Bridge and the Anji Khad Bridge during his visit, both of which are engineering marvels on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

Successful Trial Runs Completed

Despite the postponement, the Indian Railways has successfully conducted trial runs of the Vande Bharat Express on the Katra-Sangaldan section of the USBRL. These trials are part of the final preparations for the full commissioning of the 272-km rail line, which aims to enhance connectivity and promote economic development in the region.

Engineering Feats: Chenab and Anji Khad Bridges

The USBRL project includes the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, and the Anji Khad Bridge, India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. These structures are set to become iconic symbols of India’s infrastructural prowess and are expected to boost tourism and facilitate easier pilgrimages to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra.

Awaiting a Historic Milestone

The inauguration of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express is eagerly awaited by the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, as it promises to significantly reduce travel time and enhance accessibility to the region. The new date for the inauguration will be communicated in due course, and the authorities are committed to ensuring the safety and success of this landmark event

Chief Secretary Urges Cultivation of Land Between Fence and International Border

Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, during a high-level meeting with civil and security officials, emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to encourage farmers to cultivate land situated between the security fence and the International Border (IB). The meeting included top officials from the Agriculture Production Department (APD), Home Department, BSF, and district administrations of Kathua, Jammu, Samba, Poonch, and Rajouri.

Dulloo stressed that all arable land between the IB and the fence should be brought under cultivation, regardless of land ownership status, to enhance the local food supply. He said that the Agriculture Department should extend full support to farmers, while security forces must provide safety assurances to instill confidence in them.

The Chief Secretary urged officials to offer technical guidance on suitable crops and fodder and ensure all assistance is in place so that cultivation can begin from the next sowing season. He directed senior Agriculture officers to visit the concerned districts and resolve issues on-site in collaboration with the local administration and border security forces.

Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Production Department, Shailendra Kumar, reiterated the department’s commitment to provide handholding support to farmers. He asked Deputy Commissioners to complete ground-level assessments in advance to ensure smooth operations during field visits.

IG, BSF, presented a comprehensive report on land usage between the IB and the fence, highlighting both opportunities and local demands for effective cultivation. He also assured full cooperation from the BSF to support farming activities in the border areas.

Rupee Strengthens by 33 Paise Against Dollar Amid Market Rally and Weak US Currency

0

The Indian rupee extended its gains for a second consecutive session, rising by 33 paise to close at 85.77 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday. The rally was driven by a strong performance in domestic equity markets and a weaker dollar globally amid ongoing uncertainties.

According to forex traders, the rupee was also supported by several key factors:

  • A decline in global crude oil prices
  • Favourable inflation data from India
  • The US government’s recent decision to suspend an additional 26% tariff on Indian goods until July 9

At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 85.85 and touched an intraday high of 85.59 before settling at 85.77, marking a 33 paise gain from Friday’s close of 86.10. Forex markets were shut on Monday due to Ambedkar Jayanti.

Anuj Choudhary, Research Analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, noted that the rupee’s rise was fueled by a decline in the US dollar index and a surge in local markets. “Falling crude oil prices and positive macroeconomic indicators also supported the currency, though foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows limited further gains,” he added.

Looking ahead, Choudhary said the rupee may find support from overall weakness in oil prices. However, increased demand for dollars by importers and continued FII selling could limit sharp appreciation. He expects the USD-INR pair to trade in the ₹85.40–₹86.00 range in the near term.

The latest data from the government showed that wholesale price inflation dropped to a six-month low of 2.05% in March, as prices of food items like vegetables and potatoes declined.

Meanwhile, the dollar index — which tracks the greenback against six major currencies — was slightly down by 0.02% at 99.38, a level last seen on March 1, 2022.

In global energy markets, Brent crude slipped by 0.11% to USD 64.81 per barrel, marking a four-year low — a level last touched in April 2021.

On the domestic front, Indian equities witnessed a strong rally:

  • The BSE Sensex surged 1,577.63 points (2.10%) to close at 76,734.89
  • The NSE Nifty jumped 500 points (2.19%) to end at 23,328.55

Despite the upbeat mood, FIIs remained net sellers, pulling out ₹2,519.03 crore from Indian equities on Friday, as per exchange data.
