Chenab Rail Bridge Becomes Aerial Sensation Among Air Travellers

Days after its grand inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6, the world’s highest railway-arch bridge over the Chenab river in Jammu and Kashmir has become an instant sensation — not only on the ground, but also in the skies.

According to a press release by the Ministry of Railways, air passengers flying over the majestic valleys of Jammu and Kashmir are now being treated to a breathtaking view of the iconic Chenab Bridge, with flight pilots making special in-flight announcements to highlight the engineering marvel.

The Chenab Bridge draws admiration from every altitude, where pride rises from the earth and echoes through the clouds,” said Dilip Kumar, Executive Director of Information and Publicity, Railway Board. “These days, every flight over the Chenab Valley becomes a moment of national pride. The pilot’s voice echoes through the cabin: ‘Below you is the world’s tallest railway-arch bridge — the Chenab Bridge’.”

The announcement triggers excitement among passengers, who rush to the windows, capturing the view on their mobile phones and sharing the once-in-a-lifetime moment on social media. Applause, cheers, and smiles fill the cabin — a tribute to Indian engineering excellence.

On the ground, the enthusiasm is equally electric. Locals from nearby villages and mountainous regions have been flocking to vantage points to photograph and record videos of the bridge. “Many are live-streaming the scenes, while others are posting their visuals across Instagram and Facebook,” said a railway official.

Soaring 359 metres above the riverbed, the Chenab Bridge stands taller than the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres and nearly five times the height of Delhi’s Qutub Minar. Part of the ambitious Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the bridge spans 1,315 metres in total, with its central steel arch alone stretching 467 metres.

To withstand extreme weather and wind speeds of up to 266 km/h, the bridge was constructed using 28,000 metric tonnes of steel and supported by a first-of-its-kind cable-crane assembly system. This sophisticated mechanism featured massive cable cars and over 100-metre-tall pylons to bridge the 915-metre-wide gap across the Chenab Gorge.

“It’s a historic moment where India carved through the Himalayas to script an engineering triumph,” said Kumar. “The Chenab Bridge has become more than a project — it is a symbol of national pride and resilience.”

With both tourists and locals celebrating its completion, the bridge is not just a key infrastructure milestone but also a rising symbol of unity, achievement, and aspiration in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

India Avenges Pahalgam Attack: LG Sinha Says Pakistan Taught a Lesson by Armed Forces

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today declared that Pakistan has been decisively taught a lesson by the Indian Armed Forces following decades of cross-border terrorism and the recent brutal killing of civilians in Kashmir. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Dhunseri Polyfilm Industrial Unit at village Dohlian Jattan in Kathua district, the LG reflected on the pain Jammu and Kashmir has endured over the past 30–35 years.

“Over 50,000 innocent lives have been lost to terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir,” said Sinha. “India tried all options with our neighbour, but Pakistan was not ready to mend its ways until a decisive response was given under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

The LG recalled that he was originally scheduled to attend the Kathua event on April 30, but plans were postponed following the tragic killing of 26 civilians—including 25 tourists—by Pakistani-sponsored terrorists in Baisaran, Pahalgam, on April 22.

In retaliation, Sinha revealed, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor on the intervening night of May 6 and 7. “On the Prime Minister’s directions, nine terror camps across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) were destroyed. Civilian and military infrastructure was not targeted—only terror camps and their operatives.”

He added that Pakistan responded by shelling civilian areas in Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Uri, and Tangdhar. “Several civilians were martyred in the unprovoked shelling. But our forces sent a clear message—no Pakistani installation is out of our reach. Within three days, Pakistan was forced to back down.”

Sinha hailed the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces and the effectiveness of indigenous defence systems developed under the Make in India initiative. He called the Pahalgam attack an “unholy attempt” to damage Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism sector, disrupt communal harmony, and destabilize the region’s growing economy.

The LG also emphasized that despite repeated provocations, the Centre remains committed to the development of Jammu and Kashmir. “Two days ago, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that the march of progress in the Union Territory will not stop, come what may.”

He concluded by urging citizens to stay vigilant against the divisive designs of anti-national forces. “Our adversaries are trying to sow discord and halt our progress. It is up to all of us to safeguard the peace, prosperity, and unity of Jammu and Kashmir

Joy Turns to Tragedy: 11 Dead, Over 30 Injured in Stampede Outside Chinnaswamy Stadium During RCB Victory Celebrations

What was meant to be a historic night of celebration for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans ended in unimaginable grief, as a massive stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed at least 11 lives and left more than 30 injured on Wednesday evening.

Over two lakh jubilant fans had gathered near the stadium to witness RCB’s first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) championship felicitation, turning the area into a sea of red and gold. However, the overwhelming crowd quickly became unmanageable, leading to panic and a deadly rush at multiple gates.

▶️ Chaos at the Gates

“More than 2–3 lakh people came. No one expected this much crowd,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said at a press conference, confirming the fatalities and announcing ₹10 lakh compensation to the kin of each deceased. “The stadium accommodates only 35,000. The incident is deeply unfortunate,” he added.

According to police, the stampede occurred as thousands of fans — many without tickets — surged toward gates 10, 12, and 13 hoping to catch a glimpse of their cricketing heroes. With security forces overwhelmed, authorities were forced to shut the gates, further escalating tensions.

▶️ Heartbreaking Visuals, Heroic Rescue

Shocking visuals flooded social media: unconscious fans being carried on shoulders, people administering CPR to collapsed victims, and ambulances rushing through crowded streets. Many of the injured were rushed to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, where doctors cited suffocation and blunt trauma as possible causes of death.

▶️ ‘Ultimate Joy Turned into Sorrow’

Despite the tragedy outside, the felicitation ceremony went ahead inside the stadium — packed to capacity — drawing criticism from many quarters. “We came to watch our heroes. We bought tickets, stood in line, but ended up getting beaten and blocked,” said Prashant Shetty, a student left bruised and disillusioned.

▶️ Condolences and Political Reactions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “absolutely heartrending.” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other top leaders echoed similar sentiments.

The BCCI and IPL authorities also responded. “It’s most unfortunate. The organisers should have planned better,” said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal clarified it was not a BCCI-led event but called for a thorough inquiry.

The tragedy has also sparked a political storm, with the opposition BJP slamming the Congress-led state government over crowd mismanagement.

▶️ The Bigger Picture: India’s Stampede Tragedies

This latest incident adds to a long and tragic list of stampedes in India. In just the past year, over 100 people have died in similar incidents — from temples to railway stations to religious gatherings.

The scale of the tragedy recalls some of India’s worst stampedes, including the 2024 Hathras satsang stampede that claimed over 100 lives, and the infamous 2008 Chamunda Devi temple stampede in Rajasthan that killed nearly 250.

▶️ A Call for Change

As Bengaluru mourns, calls grow louder for better crowd control planning, especially at large public gatherings. From hastily arranged ticketing to lack of coordination between police and stadium officials, the flaws have come under sharp scrutiny.

“We must ensure such a tragedy never repeats,” said Deputy CM D. K. Shivakumar, announcing a magisterial probe into the incident.

🕯️ In memory of the lost:
Let us not allow the joy of sport to become a cause of sorrow again. It’s time for stadiums, authorities, and fans to unite — not only in celebration, but in responsibility.
