Jammu, Sep2: The traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended again on Tuesday amid torrential rains which lashed wide parts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The traffic on the 250-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was suspended after the rains triggered mudslides and shooting of stones from the hillock at various places between Samroli and Banihal sector, the officials said.

A traffic department official said vehicular movement could not be allowed as a precautionary measure in view of the bad weather and heavy rain forecast.

In a forecast issued on Monday evening, a spokesman of the meteorological department predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of Jammu division on September 2 and 3.

“There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi and moderate to heavy rainfall over Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, Kishtwar in Jammu region and Anantnag and Kulgam in south Kashmir mainly towards late night of September 2 or early morning of September 3 till late afternoon,” the spokesman said.

There is a possibility of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides or shooting of stones from hillocks at many vulnerable places and rise in water level in rivers and streams, he said, asking people to stay away from water bodies and avoid landslide-prone areas.

The highway was opened for partial traffic only on Monday after remaining closed for six days and accordingly most of the stranded traffic, including trucks carrying essential commodities to Kashmir were cleared, the officials said.

The downpour was continuing in most parts of Jammu region when last reports were received, they said.

According to the MET department, Kathua district recorded the highest 25.2 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours ending 8.30 am Tuesday followed by Jammu (17.8 mm), Batote in Ramban (17.6 mm) and Katra (15.8 mm).

In Kashmir valley, Qazigund along Jammu-Srinagar national highway recorded overnight rainfall of 23.2 mm, Gulmarg in north Kashmir (14.8 mm), Pahalgam in south Kashmir (11.4 mm) and Srinagar (6.1 mm), the spokesman said.

However, the rains stopped before the start of the dawn and later the morning sun shone brightly in the valley. (AGENCIES)

Jammu, September 1: Abhay Kumar Mahajan, IPS (Retd), Co-convener of J&K BJP Senior Citizen Cell and Chairman of the National Advisory Board NFJM, has hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strong and clear message at the 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), held in Tianjin, China.

Mahajan praised the Prime Minister for firmly exposing Pakistan’s support to terrorism while addressing more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations. PM Modi recalled the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed, and underscored that terrorism, remains the biggest challenge to global peace.

Highlighting India’s approach towards SCO, the Prime Minister outlined three core pillars — Security, Connectivity, and Opportunity. He stressed that while India seeks cooperation under these pillars, terrorism, separatism and extremism pose serious obstacles. “Terrorism is not only a challenge to the security of one country, but a common threat to entire humanity,” he said.

PM Modi also raised concern over terror financing and radicalisation, pointing out that India has been facing the brunt of terrorism for over four decades. He expressed gratitude to friendly nations that stood with India after the Pahalgam attack, noting the immense loss of innocent lives to terrorism.

The Prime Minister further reiterated India’s resolve to move ahead with the mantra of Reform, Perform and Transform, turning challenges such as the Covid pandemic and global economic instability into opportunities. He also suggested the creation of a Civilizational Dialogue Forum under SCO to promote people-to-people ties and showcase ancient civilizations, art, literature, and traditions on the global stage.

Calling for peace, security, and stability as the foundation of prosperity, PM Modi urged member countries to take firm and coordinated action against terrorism in all its manifestations. Without naming any country, he underlined that there should be no double standards in dealing with terrorism and stressed accountability for those supporting cross-border terror.

Mahajan said the Prime Minister’s “clear and bold stand” at the SCO sends out a strong message that terrorism must be opposed in all forms and colors, adding that it reflects India’s duty towards humanity and its commitment to global peace.

“No Double Standards” on terrorism: PM Modi at SCO Summit in China

CHINA, SEPT 1: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday delivered a strong message against terrorism at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, declaring that double standards on the issue are unacceptable and urging member nations to unite in the global fight against the menace.

Referring to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed at least 26 lives in April, PM Modi said it was an open challenge to all nations that believe in humanity. He added that India, a long-standing victim of terrorism, has faced its worst manifestations in recent years.

“I express gratitude to the nations who stood with us against terrorism,” PM Modi said, stressing that the world must raise its voice in unison. “Double standards in this regard are unacceptable. We must oppose terrorism in every form and colour. This is a duty towards humanity.”

Underscoring India’s policy of zero tolerance for cross-border terrorism, PM Modi said the foundation of a peaceful and prosperous region rests on three pillars — security, connectivity, and opportunity.

“Terrorism and separatism pose grave challenges to development. No country or society is safe in its clutches,” the Prime Minister warned. “Therefore, India emphasizes unity against terrorism.”

He also highlighted India’s firm response following the Pahalgam bloodshed, noting that Operation Sindoor was launched to target terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir (PoJK).
