Chenab River Flows In Spate, Akhnoor Villages Submerged; 40 Trapped, Rescue On

0

The Chenab River crossed the danger mark at Akhnoor area of Jammu division on Wednesday after incessant rainfall, inundating a temple and cutting off several villages in the region, officials said.

An official said that many houses in Kotli village were flooded as the river overflowed, while in Hamirpur the water entered the residential areas, severing road connectivity and leaving the village completely cut off.

Jammu (Rural) Police issued a public advisory, urging people to stay away from riverbanks and ensure children remain indoors.

“Rescue operations were launched after around 40 members of the Gujjar community were stranded in Garkhal Gram Panchayat. A major rescue operation has been launched by the administration to shift and evacuate them to safer places,” the officer said, adding that teams are on the ground to monitor the situation.

The old bridge in Akhnoor was closed after the Chenab river’s water level rose, and the administration urged commuters to use alternate routes, an official said.

Heavy rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir continued since Tuesday, triggering the spate.

According to the Meteorological Department, Reasi received 203 mm, Katra 193 mm, Batote 157.3 mm, Doda 114 mm, and Bhaderwah 96.2 mm of rainfall between 08:30 am Tuesday and 05:30 am Wednesday. Jammu observatory recorded 81 mm during the same period.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, with families in flood-prone areas advised to exercise extreme caution until water levels recede. (KNO)

Mata Vaishno Devi Base Camp Records Highest Rainfall In Jammu Region, Pilgrimage Remains Suspended

0

The pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills remained suspended for the ninth day on Wednesday as the base camp Katra recorded a rainfall of over 200 mm — highest in Jammu region — during the past 24 hours, officials said.

The yatra to the shrine was suspended on August 26, a couple of hours before a major landslide triggered by rains struck the old route near Ardhkuwari and killed 34 pilgrims and injured 20 others.

Though the pilgrimage remains suspended, the shrine itself is open with its priests performing daily prayers and rituals.

With the yatra cancelled, some pilgrims who have reached Katra are offering prayers at ‘Darshani Deodi’ (main entrance on the way to the shrine).

Darshani Deodi represents the first ‘darshan’ of the shrine.

Pramod, a devotee who had come from Nagpur in Maharashtra, told PTI, “I booked my flight, train and hotel tickets about three months ago to offer my prayers at the shrine. But the pilgrimage is suspended, so I am offering my prayers from here (Darshani Deodi) before returning home.” However, he said he was not disappointed and vowed to return and “wait for a call from the Mata”.

The incessant rains have led to an increase in water level in the rivers and streams, especially the Banganga river, which passes through the town.

The officials said a decision to resume the yatra will be taken once the conditions improve and the 12-km twin track to the hilltop shrine is cleared for the devotees. (Agencies)

Modi Govt Won’t Rest Till All Naxals Surrender, Caught Or Eliminated: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said the Modi government will not rest until all Naxals either surrender, are caught, or are eliminated.

Felicitating the CRPF, Chhattisgarh Police, District Reserve Guard (DRG), and CoBRA jawans who successfully carried out ‘Operation Black Forest’ on Karregutta hill in Chhattisgarh, Shah said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is committed to making India Naxal-free.

“The Modi government will not rest until all the Naxalites either surrender, are caught or eliminated,” he said.

Shah said the bravery and valour displayed by the jawans during Operation Black Forest will be remembered as a golden chapter in the history of anti-Naxal operations.

Despite the heat, altitude, and threat of IEDs at every step, security forces carried out the operation with high morale and successfully destroyed a major Naxal base camp, he said.

The material dump and supply chain of the Naxals established on Karregutta hill were valorously destroyed by personnel from the Chhattisgarh Police, CRPF, DRG, and CoBRA, he added.

The home minister said Naxals have inflicted severe damage on some of the country’s least developed regions, disrupting schools, hospitals, and obstructing government welfare schemes.

Due to continued anti-Naxal operations, there has been a “new sunrise” in the lives of 6.5 crore people across the region stretching from Pashupatinath to Tirupati, he said.

Shah also said the Modi government is taking all necessary steps to support security personnel who have suffered serious injuries during anti-Naxal operations, ensuring their lives are made easier.

The government is committed to eliminating Naxalism from the country by March 31, 2026, he added.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Dev Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma were also present on the occasion.

13 Killed, 30 Injured In Suicide Bombing Near Political Rally In Southwestern Pakistan

QUETTA, Sept 3: A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a stadium Tuesday (September 2, 2025) night as supporters of a nationalist party were leaving a rally in insurgency-hit southwest Pakistan, killing at least 13 people and wounding 30 others, police and hospital officials said Wednesday.

Local police chief Majeed Qaisrani said the blast occurred near a graveyard close to the stadium on the outskirts of Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province. The body parts of the attacker were recovered, he said.

Waseem Baig, a spokesman for a government hospital, said it had received 13 bodies and dozens of wounded, some in critical condition.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The rally was held to mark the anniversary of the death of Sardar Ataullah Mengal, a veteran nationalist leader and former provincial Chief Minister.

The leader of the Balochistan National Party, Akhtar Mengal, was unharmed in the attack, but some of his supporters were among the dead and wounded, senior police officer Usama Ameen said. Mr. Mengal is a vocal critic of the government and often holds rallies to demand the release of missing Baloch nationalists.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti condemned the bombing as a “cowardly act of the enemies of humanity,” ordering the best possible medical care for the wounded and a high-level probe to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In Islamabad, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also denounced the attack, blaming “India-backed terrorists and their facilitators” for trying to destabilize the country by targeting civilians. He offered no evidence to back up the allegation.

Pakistan’s government and Mr. Bugti in recent months have frequently accused India of backing both the Pakistani Taliban and Baloch separatists, a charge New Delhi denies.

Balochistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency, with groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) demanding independence from the central government. The separatists have largely targeted security forces and workers from Pakistan’s Punjab province.

Although authorities say the insurgency has been subdued, violence in the region continues.

In July, gunmen abducted and killed nine people after stopping two passenger buses on a highway in Balochistan as the buses traveled from Quetta to Punjab province. Most such previous attacks have been claimed by the outlawed BLA group. (Agencies)

Heavy rains have triggered multiple landslides across Rajouri district, severely affecting normal life and posing danger to residential areas.

A major landslide struck the Jammu–Rajouri–Poonch National Highway at Kallar in Rajouri, where 2–3 residential houses have been left highly vulnerable to damage and possible collapse. Locals reported that nearly ten feet of land has sunk at a sharp turn, exposing these houses and leaving families terrified.

Meanwhile, the Teryath–Mougla–Kalakote road has also been blocked today due to continuous rainfall and fresh landslides. Authorities confirmed that rainfall is still continuing in the region.

In another incident, a landslide and tree fall occurred on the circular road near Shiv Mandir Rajouri. Police and SDRF teams rushed to the spot and are working to clear the debris and restore movement.

Many link roads across the district have also been cut off due to landslides and sinking patches, adding to the hardships of residents.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until clearance operations are completed.

Unrelenting rains piled misery on north India, reeling under serial cloudbursts and floods for the past few weeks, as swollen rivers inundated the plains, crippled rails and road traffic, and forced school closures.

The situation in Punjab, battling its worst floods since 1988, remained precarious as the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi rivers and seasonal rivulets remained swollen due to heavy rains in their upstream. Twelve districts have been hit by the floods that have already claimed 29 lives, besides impacting more than 2.56 lakh people.

Among the Himalayan states, Uttarakhand faced another rainy day on Tuesday with various regions lashed by heavy showers.

Two women died in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday as heavy rains continued to trigger landslides and flash floods, closing over 1,000 roads. An orange alert, warning of heavy rains, has been issued for Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur and Kinnaur districts.

In Shimla, all government and private educational institutes, including coaching centres and nursing institutes, have been ordered to remain shut. JAMMU: A woman and her daughter were killed in a house collapse, while 40 persons were trapped in a flooded village as torrential rains pounded Jammu region for the second day on Wednesday, officials said.

The heavy rains led to increase in the water level in rivers, streams and rivulets which are flowing close or above danger mark, while major roads, including all-weather Srinagar-Jammu national highway, remained closed for the second day owing to multiple landslides and landslips between Udhampur and Banihal, the officials said.

About Jammu-Srinagar national highway, he said the stretch of land on the upper side of road has been sunk at Tharad in Udhampur while landslides, mudslides and shooting of stones were reported at multiple places, prompting suspension of the traffic for the second day.

The spokesman said one tube each of Lankhanpur-Madhopur and Sahar Khad bridges along Jammu-Pathankot road in Kathua district were damaged by floods last week but the traffic on the highway is continuing through the second tube.

Police and SDRF personnel were seen using a public addressing system to inform people living in low lying areas adjoining the river banks in Jammu to relocate to safer places.

Police and district administration have also issued advisors asking people to remain cautious and stay away from the swollen water bodies and vulnerable areas prone to landslides, while the authorities extended the closure of all government and private schools on Wednesday.
