Saroori Visits Margi Cloudburst Victims, Accuses Government of Neglect

0

Margi Warwan, September 2: A Congress delegation led by senior leader and former minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori visited Margi Warwan to meet the families affected by the recent devastating cloudburst.

While interacting with the victims, Saroori said the administration, under the supervision of SDM Dr. Mohammad Ashraf, was present on the ground to extend relief and support. He informed that he had already briefed the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar about the problems being faced by the people of Margi.

Terming the tragedy a natural calamity, Saroori urged people to pray to the Almighty for protection from such disasters in the future. At the same time, he strongly criticized the Lieutenant Governor’s Administration, the Chief Minister, and the Central Government for “ignoring Margi and failing to reach out to its victims.” He questioned why relief efforts were focused on Chishoti while Margi was left unattended. “It was commendable that leaders reached Chishoti, and we pray that such a tragedy never occurs again. But the fact that neither the L.G. Administration, nor the Chief Minister, nor any minister came to Margi is deeply unfortunate,” he added.

Saroori demanded that financial assistance should reach the genuine sufferers without discrimination. He emphasized that those whose houses have been completely damaged must be compensated adequately, and priority should be given to the most affected families. He called for relief distribution on the “principles of justice” and urged the administration to verify damages carefully.

The Congress leader also confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner had announced assistance under the SDRF, amounting to ₹1.38 lakh for fully damaged houses. “Congress is committed to serving the people, and I assure you of all possible help,” he added.

Earlier, SDM Marwah Dr. Mohammad Ashraf, who has been camping in the affected area, briefed the gathering about the measures taken by the administration. He assured the victims that the government and its officials from various departments were with them during this crisis. “Our teams will verify the needy, and we will continue to stay in this village until every affected family receives the required assistance,” he said, urging people to cooperate with the relief efforts.

Locals expressed gratitude to Saroori for visiting them in their hour of need but also raised concerns about the functioning of the Revenue Department. They demanded that higher authorities be deputed to assess the losses as many families had lost everything in the disaster. They also urged that the Revenue Department make public the list of affected families to remove doubts and ensure transparency.

Among those present during the visit were DySP Marwah Vijay Bhagat, Tehsildar Marwah, TSO, BDO, and officials from Revenue, PHE, and RDD departments.

JAMMU, SEPTEMBER 02:In the aftermath of the visit of the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to Jammu yesterday to personally assess the extent of damage caused by the recent flash floods, Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, today chaired a high-level meeting with Administrative Secretaries and Divisional Administration to review the swift and time-bound implementation of the directives issued by the visiting Minister.

At the outset, the Chief Secretary underscored the urgent need for seamless inter-departmental coordination to bring immediate relief to the affected people and ensure early restoration of essential services, including power supply and potable water, in the shortest possible timeframe.

Placing particular emphasis on connectivity, he directed that all efforts be undertaken on a war-footing to restore damaged road links at the earliest, as road connectivity forms the backbone for other relief, rehabilitation, and restoration measures.

He instructed the respective Divisional and District administrations to prepare a comprehensive action plan for the restoration of damaged infrastructure across the flood-affected areas, ensuring strict adherence to timelines.

Highlighting the importance of public health, the Chief Secretary directed that all water sources be tested for contamination prior to supply, so as to prevent any outbreak of water-borne diseases.

He further instructed the Health Department to organize health camps in all affected villages, with medical teams conducting vital health checks and ensuring the availability of essential medicines to the local population.

In addition, he called for a detailed safety audit of all public infrastructure in the flood-hit regions, particularly educational and health institutions, bridges, and government offices, to ensure structural stability and safeguarding of human lives.

Stressing that these measures hold the highest priority, the Chief Secretary made it clear that the directives emanate directly from the Union Home Minister and must, therefore, be implemented with the utmost urgency and seriousness.

The Chief Secretary further reiterated the government’s commitment to not only providing immediate relief and rehabilitation to affected families but working towards long-term resilience through better infrastructure planning, disaster preparedness, and preventive measures to mitigate the impact of such calamities in the future.

Sanjay Manhas Demands Urgent Relief for Flood-Hit Families in Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu, 02/09/2025 — Social activist Sanjay Manhas has called for urgent government intervention to provide relief and rehabilitation for thousands of families affected by the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the situation, Manhas said the devastation caused by the floods has left communities in despair, with people struggling for food, drinking water, medicines, and shelter. He urged the administration to ensure the swift distribution of essential supplies and deployment of adequate medical teams in the worst-hit areas.

“The ground reality is alarming. People have lost homes, crops, and livelihoods. Relief must reach them on time, without bureaucratic delays,” Manhas stated, adding that transparent monitoring of aid distribution is critical to avoid misuse of resources.

He further appealed to non-governmental organizations, youth volunteers, and local business houses to come forward and support the victims with donations and on-ground assistance.

Apart from immediate relief, Manhas stressed on the need for long-term disaster management planning, including improved drainage systems, stronger embankments, and community awareness programs to minimize damage from future calamities.

Residents in several affected areas have echoed these concerns, saying that timely help will decide how quickly they can rebuild their lives after the floods.

NC Govt failed people, BJP stands with flood-affected families, announces Rs 28 Cr

Leader of Opposition in J&K Assembly, Sunil Sharma, today addressed a press conference at the BJP headquarters, Trikuta Nagar, Jammu, accompanied by Dr. Narinder Singh, BJP National Secretary & MLA, Sham Lal Sharma, MLA Jammu North, and Dr. Devinder Kumar Manyal, MLA Ramgarh. BJP spokesperson Balbir Ram Rattan was also present on the occasion.

Sunil Sharma expressed deep concern over the widespread devastation caused by incessant rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods that have disrupted normal life across the Jammu region. He informed that the disaster began with the cloudburst in Chashoti village on August 14, followed by another in Kathua on August 16, and further aggravated by continuous rains from August 24 to 26, leading to severe destruction in Jammu, Samba, Udhampur, Reasi, and other districts.

Highlighting the proactive role of BJP representatives, Sharma said, “BJP leaders and MLAs have stood shoulder to shoulder with the people, participating in rescue and relief operations. This is not a favour but our duty towards society.” He added that BJP representatives have consistently taken up the public’s concerns with the government and coordinated with officials of the concerned departments to ensure prompt relief measures.

However, Sharma strongly criticized the NC-led J&K government for its lack of seriousness and inadequate response, terming their efforts as mere “lip service” and “eyewash.” He said that the government demonstrated a perfect example of step-motherly treatment with the Jammu region in this tragedy. He said that despite having control over essential departments like electricity and water supply, the government failed to act on a war footing.

In contrast, Sharma praised the Union Government and the LG administration for their prompt and committed response as was evident in timely rescue operations in Mata Vaishno Devi route tragedy. He recalled that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the region recently, and now, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ji, accompanied by senior officers of the Army, Police, CAPFs, and civil administration personally reviewed the ground situation. The Union Home Minister also met affected families, local MLAs, and BJP leaders to chalk out a comprehensive relief strategy.

Outlining the immediate measures, Sharma informed that the Union Home Minister directed the MLAs and senior leaders to interact with affected families on September 4–6, organize medical camps on September 9, and conduct cleanliness drives on September 10–11. He further added that rehabilitation of nearly 200 families affected by the cloudburst in Margee village of Warwan has been requested.

In a significant announcement, Sharma revealed that all 28 BJP MLAs have contributed ₹1 crore each, amounting to ₹28 crore, for relief efforts. Additionally, BJP MPs have also pledged ₹2.5 crore each, taking the total to ₹35.5 crore.

The Union Government has already released ₹209 crore to the UT Disaster Response Fund (UT-DRF) and constituted a high-level committee to submit a report within two days, following which a relief package will be finalized and released within shortest possible time. The Union Home Minister has also asked the CMs of other states to contribute economically to recover from this tragedy, said Sunil Sharma.

Sharma further said that the Army, CAPF, and others will promote the people of health on a mission basis. He stressed that the Union government has made it absolutely clear that every possible maximal help will be provided to the people.

Sunil Sharma also shared that a request has been made to allow the farmers to sell the accumulated aggregates on their fields on their own. The free ration to all the affected people is requested, which will be conveyed to FCI by the Union Home Minister. He added that all the union ministers of departments related to flood affected fields, will visit and organize meetings with the J&K government.

Sunil Sharma reiterated that the NC government in J&K has miserably failed the people in their hour of crisis, while the BJP, Union Government, and LG administration remain fully committed to ensuring maximum relief and rehabilitation.

Mufti Demands Dedicated Train Service Between Kashmir, Delhi For Relief To Fruit Industry

0

Srinagar, Sep 2: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti Tuesday appealed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to introduce a dedicated train service between Kashmir and Delhi to mitigate the challenges faced by fruit growers in the valley in the wake of the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.

“Fruit growers have been facing severe financial losses every year due to the closure of NH 44. Unfortunately, this year, the road has once again been closed, leaving hundreds of fruit-laden vehicles stranded, resulting in inevitable losses,” Mufti said in a post on X.

She said a dedicated train service between the valley and Delhi would bring much needed relief to the fruit industry.

“I appeal to the Union Railway minister @AshwiniVaishnaw to introduce a dedicated train service between the valley and Delhi to mitigate the challenges faced by the growers. Such a measure would bring much needed relief to everyone involved in the trade,” she added.

Later, talking to reporters here, Mufti, a former chief minister of the erstwhile state of J-K, said the people were facing a lot of difficulties because of the closure of the national highway.

“The biggest problem is for the fruit growers because there are several trucks stranded along the highway and there is no space in the fruit mandis and cold storages,” she said.

The PDP president said tourism was hit after the Pahalgam attack and the fruit industry has kept J-K alive in the most difficult times.

“Today, there is a need for a special cargo train so that the fruit is transported from J-K to Delhi. It is the need of the hour as the fruit growers should reap the benefits of the train services,” she said.

“I appeal to the Railway minister to arrange a special cargo train so that the fruit is transported to the mandis across the country as soon as possible,” she added.

Mufti said the recent floods, especially in Jammu, have already wreaked havoc in J-K and it will be disastrous for the UT if the fruits rot. (AGENCIES)
