The officers of District Doda through a Press Statement have come together to issue a strong statement of solidarity with Shri Harvinder Singh, IAS, Deputy Commissioner Doda, while strongly condemning the circulation of an objectionable video by the Hon’ble MLA, Mr. Mehraj Malik.

The officers commended Harvinder Singh for his exceptional service, integrity, and dedication to public welfare, describing him as “a true embodiment of integrity, humility, and commitment, whose down-to-earth demeanor and compassionate approach have made him a beacon of hope for the people of Doda.”

They underlined his exemplary track record, including his role in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections in the district. His recognition by the Government of India, none less than by the Hon’ble President of India, was highlighted as testimony to his tireless efforts for development, inclusive governance, and grassroots service. Expressing deep anguish at the contents of the said video, the officers termed the use of abusive language and baseless allegations against the Deputy Commissioner as “unfortunate, deplorable, and unacceptable.”

“Attempts to malign the image of such an outstanding officer are not only an affront to his impeccable character but also a disservice to the people of Doda, who hold him in the highest esteem,” the officers stated.

They further reminded that the Hon’ble MLA, as a public representative who has taken oath on the Constitution of India, is expected to uphold the highest standards of conduct. “He should behave in a civilised and responsible manner.

It would be in the larger public interest if he mends his behaviour,” the officers suggested. The collective note also underscored the role of the executive.

Reaffirming their united support for the Deputy Commissioner, the officers praised his resilience, people-centric approach, and unwavering focus on public service despite such unwarranted criticism. They concluded with a note of admiration.

“The people of Doda, and indeed the nation, are fortunate to have an officer of Harvinder Singh’s caliber leading with such grace, determination, and dedication.”

5 Dead, 42 Injured As Youths Clash With Police Over Social Media Ban In Nepal; Army Deployed

0

Five people were killed and 42 others injured on Monday as violent demonstrations led by youths against a Nepal government ban on social media sites intensified in Kathmandu, prompting authorities to deploy the army to control the situation, officials said.

Thousands of youths, including school students, under the banner of Gen Z, clashed with the riot police in front of the Parliament building in Kathmandu.

The protests turned violent when some agitators entered the Parliament complex, prompting police to resort to baton charges, tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, eyewitnesses said.

Forty-two people, including security personnel, were injured and are currently undergoing treatment in the Civil Hospital of Kathmandu, a Nepal Police spokesperson said.

Five people were killed in the violence, hospital sources said.

However, there is no police confirmation on the death toll.

The Army has been deployed to control the situation, military officials said.

The Kathmandu District Administration issued a prohibitory order from 12:30 pm to 10:00 pm in areas surrounding the Parliament building to curb the unrest.

“No movement of people, demonstration, meeting, gathering or sit-in will be allowed in the restricted zone,” Chief District Officer Chhabi Lal Rijal said in a notice.

The local administration later extended the restrictive order to various areas surrounding Rastrapati Bhawan, the Vice-President’s residence and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Although the government has clarified its stance that the social media sites were banned to bring them under regulation. But the general perception among the masses is that this will lead to an attack on free speech, and it may lead to censorship. (Agencies)

Jammu-Srinagar Highway Restoration in Final Phase; Vaishno Devi Yatra Suspended for 14th Day

0

The restoration of a 250-meter-long stretch of the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, which had been blocked for a week, has entered its final phase, officials said on Monday.

This restoration aims to reopen the only all-weather road connecting Kashmir to the rest of the country.

The highway has been closed since August 26 due to multiple blockades following torrential rain, flash floods, and landslides. However, it was reopened for traffic for a few hours on August 30. In total, the highway has been closed for 13 days.

“The work on restoring the washed-out stretch of highway in Udhampur has entered the final phase to make the highway trafficable. The Thard stretch is quite difficult as the highway had to be rebuilt here,” a National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official stated.

Officials anticipate the highway will reopen for traffic by Monday night, as work is progressing rapidly. Crews have successfully blasted and removed six large rocks that were the main obstacles, and they have excavated three additional rocks to assist in clearing further hindrances, officials mentioned further.

“This has been a considerable challenge. However, the road is beginning to clear, and we expect the blocked highway to be opened for traffic soon,” officials noted.

Despite these efforts, intermittent rainfall hindered the NHAI’s work to restore traffic on the landslide-affected 250-meter Thard stretch on Sunday. While most landslides, mudslides, and debris in Ramban and Udhampur have been cleared, the Thard area remains buried under a hill following the washing away of parts of the highway.

The 270-kilometre-long highway has been closed for vehicular traffic for the seventh consecutive day due to ongoing clearance operations. Meanwhile, traffic on the inter-regional Mughal Road, which connects Poonch district in the Jammu region with Shopian district in Kashmir, is moving smoothly.

“The highway is still closed for vehicular movement from Jakheni (Udhampur) towards Srinagar and vice versa due to road blockages between Jakheni and Bali Nallah. No vehicular movement shall be allowed from Nagrota (Jammu) towards Reasi, Chenani, Patnitop, Doda, Ramban, Banihal, Srinagar, and vice versa,” a traffic police advisory said.

Additionally, commuters travelling to Katra and Udhampur towns are advised to carry photo ID cards to verify their identities, facilitating smoother movement.

The closure of highways and other inter-regional roads to Kashmir has resulted in over 4,000 vehicles becoming stranded across various locations, including Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Udhampur, Ramban, the Kashmir Valley, and Punjab. Many inter-district roads, including the Katra-Reasi road, remain closed.

The army and locals are providing stranded highway travellers, mostly truckers, with rations and food daily in various districts.

Meanwhile, the pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta Hills also remained suspended for the 14th consecutive day.

Derogatory remarks row: AAP MLA Mehraj Malik Detained in Doda

0

Doda, Aug 28: The political atmosphere in Doda district grew tense on Monday after the administration detained AAP MLA Mehraj Malik and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Harvinder Singh filed an FIR against him for allegedly using abusive language, officials said.

Videos circulating on social media purportedly show Malik verbally abusing the DC, prompting the administration to cite law-and-order concerns for his preventive detention at the Dak Bungalow. Officials said the move was aimed at preventing escalation of tensions in the area.

Earlier, Malik, known for his fiery speeches, accused the administration of misusing officials to enforce a strike, vowing to “come openly and with full strength.” Sources said this was not the first such incident, as similar videos of the MLA targeting officials had surfaced in recent days.

The AAP has yet to issue a formal statement, though party insiders indicated the detention and FIR may be viewed as attempts to stifle dissent.

Meanwhile, authorities have increased security in Doda to prevent protests and maintain order.

LG calls for landslide warning sensors in Himalayan region using nanotechnology

0

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday called on the scientific community to explore possibilities of developing soil sensors using nanotechnology for the Himalayan region, as part of an early warning system to address the dangers of landslides.

“Keeping in mind the challenges of climate change, we should focus on creating nanomaterials that can reduce pollution in chemical manufacturing. We must also explore the new possibilities to develop soil sensors specifically for the Himalayan regions,” Sinha said in his address to the inaugural session of the international conference on nanotechnology for better living at the University of Kashmir here.

Sinha emphasised that these sensors would be integral to an Advanced Early Warning System, capable of alerting authorities about potential landslides based on changes in soil saturation levels.

He further noted that these projects will prove to be game changers in preventing losses from natural disasters in India’s Himalayan region in the future.

The five-day mega event, organised by the University of Kashmir in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, brought together leading scientists and researchers to showcase recent advancements in nanotechnology and its applications for sustainable living.

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted how advancements and breakthroughs in nanotechnology are reshaping lives and work environments while ensuring a better standard of living.

“Today, evolution in nanoscience and nanotechnology is having a transformative impact across various sectors. The cutting-edge research in the future will address critical global challenges in industries, healthcare and the environment,” he said.

In his address, Sinha urged scientists and experts to establish a group dedicated to developing an Advanced Early Warning System for flash floods, focusing on creating more sensitive and accurate sensors through nanotechnology.

He also called upon nanotechnology experts to contribute significantly to the defence sector, especially in the production of lighter components for defence equipment. “Nanotechnology experts and scientists must join this effort and strengthen the self-reliance campaign in the defence sector,” he said.

The Lieutenant Governor called for devising a plan to incentivise talent in nanotechnology across academic institutions.

“Our focus should be on developing and using nanotechnology for the benefit of humanity. We simply cannot ignore the daunting challenges of climate change that confront us. Our inventions and initiatives show how quickly we are leading various areas of nanotechnology,” he added.

Gold Retreats From Record Highs; Declines Rs 606 To Rs 1,07,122/10 G On Profit-Booking

0

Gold prices retreated from record highs by declining Rs 606 to Rs 1,07,122 per 10 grams in the domestic futures market on Monday, as investors booked profits in tandem with a weak trend in the international markets.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures for October delivery declined Rs 606 or 0.56 per cent to Rs 1,07,122 per 10 grams. It had surged to a lifetime high of Rs 1,07,807 per 10 grams on Friday. Similarly, the precious metal futures for December delivery slipped Rs 612 to Rs 1,08,176 per 10 grams.

Silver too witnessed a pullback after touching a fresh peak last week.

The white metal futures for December delivery dropped Rs 977 or 0.78 per cent to trade at Rs 1,23,720 per kilogram. Silver had scaled a record Rs 1,26,300 per kg on September 3.

On Saturday, bullion prices in the spot markets rose to hit fresh peaks in the national capital.

Gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent advanced Rs 900 each to hit a fresh high of Rs 1,07,870 per 10 grams and Rs 1,07,000 per 10 grams, respectively, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

Silver prices jumped Rs 1,400 to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,27,000 per kilogram in New Delhi.

In the overseas markets on Monday, Comex gold futures for December delivery fell 0.68 per cent to USD 3,628.35 per ounce after scaling a record USD 3,655.50 per ounce in the previous session. Spot gold eased to USD 3,584.40 per ounce in the global markets.

Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities, said, “China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), increased its gold holdings for a 10th straight month in August as it continues to diversify its reserves away from the US dollar.” The PBoC on Sunday said it has added purchases of gold to its reserves in August, extending it into a 10th consecutive month, as per the official data.

China’s gold reserves stood at 74.02 million fine troy ounces at the end of August, up from 73.96 million at the end of July.

The gold reserves were valued at USD 253.84 billion as compared to USD 243.99 billion at the end of the previous month, according to the data.

Trivedi noted that the US administration on Friday moved to exempt gold, along with some other metals, from its country-based tariffs, a step expected to lend further support to demand.

Also, Comex silver futures slipped 0.7 per cent to trade at USD 41.26 per ounce in the international markets. Spot silver eased by 0.88 per cent to USD 40.64 per ounce.

Last week, gold and silver continued their upward momentum, with the precious metal touching a fresh record high and silver scaling a 14-year peak in global markets.

Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities, Mehta Equities, said disappointing US job numbers have raised expectations of an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve, bolstering safe-haven demand for the bullion prices.

“Growing global uncertainties and a weakening dollar index further fuelled safe-haven demand, while a weaker rupee lent additional support to gold and silver in domestic markets,” Kalantri added.

According to the World Gold Council, central banks’ purchases of gold globally have slowed as prices surged, although geopolitical risks are likely to sustain demand.

On the market outlook, global investment bank Goldman Sachs said in a note that gold could rally towards USD 5,000 per ounce if the Fed’s independence comes under threat and investors move even a small share of holdings from Treasuries to bullion. (Agencies)
