Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday emphasized that peace serves as a fundamental prerequisite for the growth of tourism and sports in Jammu and Kashmir. Speaking to reporters, Abdullah highlighted the need for a secure environment to ensure thriving development.

“For development in tourism or sports, we need peace for everything. If we talk about having day and night matches, and if the situation is not good, who will come to play in the evening?” Abdullah stated. His remarks reflect an urgent call for stability within the region.

The Chief Minister made these comments during the launch of the Real Kashmir Football Club’s special edition jersey, designed in cooperation with the renowned Danish sportswear brand Hummel. Abdullah articulated that the initiative symbolizes a message of peace, aiming to unite the community through the universal spirit of sports.

On the previous day, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha addressed similar concerns, reiterating that peace is imperative for the overall development of Jammu and Kashmir. Sinha also noted the lingering effects of terrorism in the region, highlighting significant challenges that need addressing.

Abdullah asserted that establishing peace should not be solely his government’s responsibility. “Those who are responsible should fulfill their duty,” he declared. He expressed frustration that often, his administration gets blamed for law and order issues, despite peace being a broader concern beyond their control.

The Chief Minister described ongoing efforts to boost sports infrastructure throughout the Union Territory. “There is hardly any assembly segment where some sports infrastructure is not being developed by our government. We aim to build infrastructure based on the interests of the youth in every region,” he remarked.

Abdullah aims to create facilities that empower youth to actively participate in sports. “Tournaments and races are being organized at district and sub-district levels, and I invite athletes from across the country to join the second edition of the Kashmir marathon scheduled for November 2 in Srinagar,” he added.

Regarding infrastructural setbacks, Abdullah commented on the state of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which suffered damage due to recent landslides. “We haven’t completed black-topping on the 300-meter stretch that washed away. We will address this soon, allowing vehicles to move freely. However, currently, no vehicles remain stranded,” he assured.

At the ceremony unveiling the ‘Peace Jersey’, Abdullah emphasized that sports have the unique ability to foster peace and community spirit. The jersey’s design pays tribute to Kashmir’s cultural heritage and aspirations. Inspired by the historic Hari Parbat Fort—a symbol of communal harmony—the kit features a serene sky-blue base, signifying peace.

“Real Kashmir FC exemplifies how football can inspire and unite communities. Sports are a vital bridge for peace,” Abdullah remarked, underlining the significant role of athletics in promoting integration and harmony across Jammu and Kashmir.

Modi criticized the previous Congress-led government for continuously escalating taxes amidst rising living costs. “Congress imposed a heavy tax burden that stifled economic growth. Our government has responded by gradually reducing taxes and extending relief to the populace,” he highlighted.

Moreover, Modi accused former Congress administrations of neglecting border villages, which resulted in the migration of residents seeking better opportunities.

He claimed that Arunachal Pradesh received less attention because it holds only two Lok Sabha seats. “When I took office in 2014, my mission was to liberate the nation from the Congress mindset. Our focus is not on political gain through votes but on prioritizing national interests. We uphold the principle of ‘Nagrik Devo Bhava’ (the citizen is God),” Modi said.

Additionally, he maintained that the underprivileged regions that had been historically disregarded are now at the forefront of developmental initiatives. “Since 2014, Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as a key area for development, receiving financial backing of Rs 1 lakh crore from the Centre in the last decade—16 times greater than during the Congress rule,” he boasted.

This accident raises questions regarding traffic management and safety measures in such treacherous terrains where vehicle collisions are not uncommon. Authorities have begun an investigation to ascertain the causes behind the incident.

As per police, they are actively reviewing the circumstances surrounding the accident. They urge local drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations, especially in challenging areas like Zojila Pass.

This article is inspired by the experience shared with me by a student, Happy Singh. His journey made me reflect deeply on the unfinished role of many school counsellors in India’s education system.Happy once told me about his career counselling sessions in school. He was a bright student with diverse interests, particularly in sustainability and data sciences. Yet, when he sat with his counsellor, the only options seriously discussed were engineering or medicine. “I felt like I wasn’t being heard,” Happy said. “It was as if my counsellor didn’t know that careers beyond the traditional ones even existed.”Happy’s story is not unique. He recalled how one of his classmates wanted to pursue biotechnology but was advised to “pick commerce first and then figure it out.” Another friend who dreamt of studying abroad was discouraged because the counsellor wasn’t updated on international admission requirements. “We had to do most of the research ourselves,” Happy admitted. “The counselling we received often left us more confused than confident.”Listening to him, I realized this is not just about one school. Across many top schools in India, counsellors are still confined to outdated frameworks. They rarely highlight India’s own world-class universities or the exciting range of opportunities available globally. This gap denies students like Happy true exposure to the future that awaits them.Happy also shared how his school counsellor was overburdened handling teaching duties, event coordination, and administrative work along with counselling. “She wanted to help us, but she just didn’t have the time,” he said. As a result, counselling became more of a side activity rather than a structured, impactful process.What struck me most was when Happy said: “Teachers have exams like CTET, professors face UGC-NET, but our counsellor didn’t need any certification. Yet, she was shaping some of the most important decisions of our lives.” That statement stayed with me. If students are to trust the process, shouldn’t counsellors go through a professional certification system covering psychology, career knowledge, Indian higher education, and global admissions?Happy’s experience also highlighted something else mindset. “Counselling felt more about getting someone into a foreign university than about helping us discover what we really wanted,” he said. What he and his peers truly craved was empathy: someone to listen, guide, and help them align their strengths with meaningful opportunities.His words reminded me that counselling must shift from being admission-driven to student-centric. Students like Happy don’t just need lists of universities; they need mentors who understand their aspirations, who see them as individuals and not as checkboxes.If counselling is to be credible, it must be treated as a profession with rigour, expertise, and empathy. Policy interventions from the Ministry of Education and state boards could set guidelines, eligibility standards, and accreditation norms for school counsellors. That would ensure students across India, like Happy Singh, get informed, ethical, and future-ready guidance.Happy’s story is not just his own, it’s the story of countless young people who deserve better. And it’s time we listened.At the same time, I must acknowledge that there are also counsellors across the country who are doing their work at par excellence—bringing empathy, updated knowledge, and true mentorship into students’ lives. To those counsellors, I make a humble request: please guide, mentor, and inspire others in the profession so that together, we can build a stronger ecosystem of support for our students.

India must become self-reliant for global peace, stability, prosperity: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that India’s dependence on foreign countries remains one of its biggest enemies. He said it is high time that India stands before the world as a self-reliant nation to realise the vision of a developed India by 2047.

The Prime Minister was addressing the ‘Samudra Se Samriddhi’ programme in Bhavnagar today. Unveiling his government’s vision to make India a maritime superpower, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the country aims to triple its share in global maritime trade by 2047. He said, for global peace, stability, and prosperity, the world’s most populous country must become self-reliant.

He cautioned that reliance on others compromises national self-respect. Mr Modi asserted that the future of 140 crore Indians cannot be left to external forces, nor can the resolve for national development be based on foreign dependency. He declared that the solution to a hundred problems is one-building an Atmanirbhar Bharat. To achieve this, India must confront challenges, reduce external dependence, and demonstrate true self-reliance.

During the programme, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple projects worth over 32,000 crore rupees. Mr Modi also inaugurated the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal along with several major maritime projects valued at more than 7,800 crore rupees. The Prime Minister said the country is now working rigorously to reclaim its legacy and emerge as a global maritime power. India’s coastlines have always been a symbol of prosperity and now its sea shores will become gateways of India’s future growth, the Prime Minister said. India’s maritime sector is undergoing next-generation reforms. He announced that the sector would soon adopt a “One Nation, One Port Procedure,” aiming to simplify port procedures across the country. He described the recent passage of five maritime-related bills in Parliament as a “game-changer” that will modernise port governance

He also held previous governments responsible for weakening the maritime sector, stating that the license raj system and post-globalisation policies led to an increased dependency on foreign nations.

Later, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the ancient town of Lothal near Ahmedabad and reviewed the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex, NMHC.

He inspected completed works and chaired a review meeting with officials. The NMHC is being developed at a cost of 4,500 crore rupees at the historic site, which was once a significant trading centre of the Indus Valley Civilisation. It aims to showcase India’s rich maritime legacy to the world. Prime Minister also undertook an aerial survey of Dholera Smart City.
