New Delhi, Jul 31: India’s COVID-19 case rally rose by 19,673 in a day to reach 4,40,19,811 while active cases reached 1,43,676, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Sunday.
The death toll has climbed to 5,26,357 with 39 more fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.
Active caseload increased by 292 in a day and comprise 0.33 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.48 per cent, the ministry said.
The number of people who have recuperated from the viral disease surged to 4,33,49,778 while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.20 per cent.
The daily positivity rate was 4.96 per cent and the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 4.88 per cent.
According to the Union Health Ministry, 204.25 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far.
India’s COVID-19 case tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 last year, three crore on June 23 and four crore on January 25 this year.
The 39 new fatalities include seven in West Bengal, four in Maharashtra, three in Delhi, two each from Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and one each in Assam, Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Uttarakhand. RAJOURI, JULY 30: Deputy Commissioner, Vikas Kundal today inaugurated Eklavya Model Residential school Gurdhan Balla at Rajouri.
Officers who were present on the occasion were ADDC, Pawan Kumar; ACR, Imran Rashid Kataria; CPO, Mohammad Khurshid; SDM Thanamandi, Vikas Dhar; CEO Education, Shailash Kumari; DSWO, Wakeel Ahmed Bhatt; students and their parents.
It was informed that as many as sixty tribal students have been admitted in the EMRs during the first session and they will be provided proper bording and lodging facilities in the EMRs.
Pertinently, Tribal Welfare Department under the overall guidance of Secretary Tribal Affairs, Dr Shahid Iqbal Chowdhary is working tirelessly for the welfare of the tribal community. It is because of these efforts that two EMRs have been sanctioned in the district, the proposal for three more EMRs also stands submitted and the land for these newly proposed EMRs campuses has also been identified.
Scores of initiatives for ensuring quality education to the tribal students including opening of new Gujjar and Bakerwall hostels, transit accomodations, modernization of schools in tribal areas and many others have been launched.
Speaking at the event, the DC said that Eklavya Model Residential school is an ambitious initiative of the Government of India to facilitate the tribal students to get quality education and to enable them to compete with the students of the rest of the country.
He also directed the concerned officers to work with proper dedication and added zeal to ensure that quality education is provided to the tribal students.
DC also stressed upon the concerned officers to ensure that all the basic facilities are made available to the students in the EMRs so that they don’t face any inconveniences.
Dumper catches fire inside Nashri tunnel in Udhampur, no casualty reported
Banihal July 30: A dumper mysteriously caught fire inside Nashri Chennai Tunnel in J&K’s Udhampur district on Saturday with timely action by the Fire and Emergency Services averting a major mishap.
As per officials, as soon as the mishap was reported, Fire tenders were pressed into service and they doused the fire. The timely action by the Fire and Emergency Services averted a major tragedy inside the tunnel.
2 persons dead, 4 others injured as seasonal ‘Kotha’ house collapses in Reasi
Two persons died while four others sustained injuries after a seasonal house—commonly known as ‘Kotha’– collapsed in Khanikote area of Reasi district. Livestock was also killed in the incident.
Divulging details a police official told GNS that at about 0400 hours in the wee morning the ‘Kotha’ suddenly collapsed in Khanikote area, resulting into the onspot death of two persons and injuries to four others. Three sheep, three goats and two oxes also got killed in the incident.
He identified the deceased as Madan Singh, 22, son of Gyan Chand and Joja Devi, 42, wife of Rattan Singh, both residents of Khanikot and at present Monimal (Kotha).
The injured have been identified as Surjeet Singh, Sunil Singh, Lacho Devi and Kako Devi, all residents of the same area.
Meanwhile, SHO Arnas Jeet Singh confirmed the incident to GNS and said that the injured have been shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.
Stop unnecessary ‘harassment’ of youth by making recruitment process transparent: Kavinder

JAMMU, July 29: Senior BJP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister, Kavinder Gupta on Friday urged the government to stop unnecessary harassment of youth by ensuring a transparent recruitment process in the Union Territory of J&K.
He was speaking during a public grievances camp at Party Headquarters after interacting with a deputation of Library and Information Science (LIS) aspirants led by Karan Kumar. Sham Chowdhary former Minister and Munish Sharma incharge BJP all morcha also accompanied Kavinder during the camp.
Kavinder said that recent unfortunate incidents wherein scams have been exposed in the recruitment process are unacceptable and the government should come up with a failsafe mechanism to provide transparent and accountable environment especially in case recruitment process as youths have already faced hardships due to discriminatory policies of successive governments.
Scores of people visited the party office to put forth their woes pertaining to basic amenities, civic infra etc and sought intervention of the BJP leadership. Most of the people highlighted issues related to the development in their respective areas besides some personal matters.
The deputation of Library and Information Science (LIS) aspirants led by Karan Kumar and comprising Prince Pratap Singh, Anu Sharma, Mehmood Ayaz, Amit, Vivek and others took up the matter of eligibility issue with the former deputy chief minister. They also submitted a memorandum with regard to their demands.
They apprised the senior BJP leader that the Minimum Qualification required for the aforesaid post is Certificate course in Library Science but this course is outdated and obsolete as both the universities in J&K viz KU and JU have stopped these courses way back in 1985 and 1983 respectively and therefore there is no fun in making the same as criteria for recruitment.
Consequently, Kavinder contacted SSB Chairman Rajesh Shavan and placed the matter before him. Thereupon, the officer concerned assured to look into the matter at the earliest assuring that the interests of the aforesaid aspirants will remain his priority.
Kargil war: Point 5140 named as ‘Gun Hill’
To commemorate the victory of Indian armed forces and pay tribute to the supreme sacrifice of the gunners in ‘Operation Vijay’, Point 5140 at Drass in Kargil has been christened as ‘Gun Hill’, a defence spokesman said on Saturday.
The Regiment of Artillery, with lethal and accurate firepower, was able to have a telling effect on the enemy troops and their defences, including Point 5140, which was the key factor in the early completion of operations in the 1999 Kargil war, he said.
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of ‘Operation Vijay’, declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle with Pakistani troops on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.
On behalf of the Regiment of Artillery, a wreath was laid by Lieutenant General T K Chawla, Director General of Artillery, at Kargil War Memorial, Drass, the spokesman said, adding veteran gunners who had participated in the operation were present on the occasion.
Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding of Fire and Fury Corps, also laid a wreath on the solemn occasion, he said.
The ceremony was conducted in the presence of veterans from all artillery regiments, which got the honour title “KARGIL” in Operation Vijay. Serving officers of the gunner fraternity were also present during the event, he added. PTI MIJ AQS
34th batch of over 500 Amarnath Yatra pilgrims leave Jammu base camp
Jammu, Jul 30: Over 500 more pilgrims on Saturday left here for the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas, officials said.
A total of 597 pilgrims of the 30th batch left base camp Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in the city in a convoy of 30 vehicles amid heavy CRPF security in the morning, they said.
The officials said 155 pilgrims heading for Baltal base camp were the first to leave in eight vehicles, followed by the second convoy of 22 vehicles carrying 442 pilgrims for the Pahalgam base camp of the annual pilgrimage.
The number of pilgrims visiting the cave shrine has drastically fallen in the past three days mostly due to bad weather conditions, they said, adding Saturday’s was the lowest batch of pilgrims in past one week.
While 3,862 pilgrims left for the cave shrine from Jammu on Monday, 2,189, 1,147, 1,602 and 835 devotees and left for the pilgrimage from here on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively, the officials said.
The annual 43-day Amarnath Yatra commenced from the twin base camps — traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag and 14-km shorter Baltal in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal — on June 30.
Over 2.7 lakh pilgrims have so far offered prayers at the cave shrine, housing the naturally formed ice-shivlingam, the officials said.
A total of 1,41,950 pilgrims have left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp for the Valley since June 29, the day the first batch of pilgrims was flagged off by Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
The yatra is scheduled to end on August 11, on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.
A total of 36 people, mostly pilgrims, have died during the ongoing yatra.
Besides, 15 pilgrims were killed in the flash floods at the Amarnath cave shrine on July one. (Agencies)
NATIONALYaseen Malik back in Tihar, still on Hunger strike
New Delhi, Jul 30: Convicted Kashmiri separatist Yaseen Malik was discharged after remaining admitted at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here for four days and has returned to Tihar Jail, IANS reported.
“He (Malik) came back to Tihar on Friday,” news agency IANS quoted Director General (Prisons), Sandeep Goyal as saying.
Malik was hospitalised by the prison authorities after his health deteriorated on July 26 following his ongoing hunger strike.
After returning to his cell, Malik has decided to continue with his hunger strike and is still not having any food.
“He is still on intravenous fluids,” the top prison official said.
The jailed separatist leader, who is currently lodged at Jail No. 7 of the Tihar Prison, went on the hunger strike on July 22.
When asked the reason behind his hunger strike, the official refrained from divulging any details. However, prison sources said that the Kashmiri separatist is protesting against the agencies that are investigating his cases.
Recently on July 15, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s sister Rubaiya Sayeed identified Malik as her abductor three decades back.

Listed as a witness for the prosecution, Rubaiya Sayeed appeared before the CBI court in Jammu and identified Malik and three other accused as her abductors.
Malik is in custody since 2019 when NIA arrested him in a terror funding case. He is currently lodged at Jail No. 7 of the Tihar Jail.
The NIA Court in its order had awarded two life sentences and five punishments of 10 years of ‘Rigorous Imprisonment’ each to the convict.
Rigorous imprisonment means confinement of the offender in a manner that increases the hardship of the jail term based upon the nature of the offence by subjecting the offender to special arrangements in the jail.
However, despite Court orders, Malik was not given any work inside the prison due to security reasons.

two from Bhaderwah Campus were selected to undergo 4 Week Internship
under Dr. Ashok Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer
Science and IT, Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, Jammu.
This is first Time in J&K, a four week long programme for PG/PhD
Students sponsored by DST SERB has been conducted in the state
university.
During the Internship , Participants have worked on various tools
