India is witnessing death of democracy: Rahul Gandhi

Aug 5: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that India is witnessing the “death of democracy” and anybody who stands against the onset of dictatorship is “viciously attacked”.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here ahead of the nationwide protest by the Congress, Gandhi said the sole agenda of the government is that people’s issues such as price rise, unemployment and violence in society must not be raised.
There is no democracy in India and there is a dictatorship of four people, he alleged.
What we are witnessing is the death of democracy. That is what India is witnessing. What India has built brick by brick, starting almost a century ago, is basically being destroyed in front of your eyes,” Gandhi said.
All of you know it, all of India knows it. Anybody who stands against this idea of the onset of dictatorship, does not matter who he is, where he comes from, which state, which religion, male or female, that person is viciously attacked, put in jail, arrested, beaten up,” he said.
The idea is that people’s issues, whether they are price rise, unemployment, violence in society, must not be raised, Gandhi said.
He alleged that the government is being run to protect the interests of four-five people and this “dictatorship” is being run in the interest of “two-three big business people by two people”.
The Congress is set to hold nationwide protests and will also ‘gherao’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence against price rise, unemployment and GST hike on some essential items.
Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs of the party will also hold a “Chalo Rashtrapati Bhavan” (march to Rashtrapati Bhavan) from Parliament to register the protest against price rise and unemployment.
In all capital cities, the state units would organise a gherao of Raj Bhavans in which MLAs, MLCs, former MPs and senior leaders will participate. (Agencies)

DSS Strongly Condemns Derogatory Remarks Against Maharaja Hari Singh in a Programme Broadcast by Akashvani/All India Radio

Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak, President, Dogra Sadar Sabha, Jammu
and Kashmir, Jammu, chaired an urgent meeting of the prominent Dogras
representing various Sabhas and other organisations of Jammu province
regarding  working out modalities for Celebration of Birth Anniversary of
Maharaja Hari Singh ji this year on 23 September and to deliberate upon
the methodology and pace of work adopted for revival and protection of
Dogra Heritage, by the agencies engaged by the UT government.
Earlier, on the sidelines of the meeting, Thakur Gulchain Singh Charak,
President Dogra Sadar Sabha addressed the media personnel of within
and outside J&K to convey deep resentment of the civil society over the
manner in which the noble, patriotic and just rule and character of Maharaja
Hari Singh Ji has been projected recently in a programme broadcast by All
India Radio/ Akashvani. Shri Charak lambasted Akashvani for broadcasting
such a defamatory, baseless and ridiculous programme in which the
Maharaja has been described as a cruel ruler whereas, some other
persons of unknown character and personality have been projected as
heroes of the freedom struggle.
Shri Charak expressed deep anguish on behalf of the civil society of
Jammu over the casual approach of the UT administration in revival of
Dogra heritage and protection and conservation of historical monuments,
despite of loud claims by the entire government led by Hon’ble Prime
Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the Centre and Hon’ble Lt. Governor Shri
Manoj Kumar Sinha in the UT regarding commitments for conservation of
indigenous culture, traditions and heritage. He said that at the ground level
the work on restoration of historical monuments like Mubarak Mandi

complex is going on at a snails pace and it appears that people engaged
are not specially qualified or skilled for the job. The roofs of the palaces
halls have been dismantled and walls of these unique monuments are
crumbling in this rainy season. The appeals of DSS and the voice of
Jammuites in this regard continues to be ignored.
In the meeting, which was attended by prominent citizens and leaders of
different social groups and organisations, following resolutions were
passed after thorough deliberations:
The derogatory references to Maharaja Hari Singh Ji in a programme of the
Akashwani were strongly and unequivocally condemned by all speakers. It
was stressed by all speakers that the Maharaja is a Dogra Icon
and any disrespect to his honour shall not be tolerated at any cost. It was
emphasized that Dogra history should be fairly projected and Government
should hold an inquiry into how the derogatory remarks were made against
the Maharaja, who was one of the earliest and strongest votaries of Indian
Independence and then, a signatory to the Instrument of Accession with
India.
It was appealed to the Government that the culprits, who made the
programme and allowed it to be broadcast, should be identified and
punished. Otherwise, it would be construed that the Government is hand in
glove with the miscreants.
It was also resolved that all Jammu based leaders of political parties
including Dr. Karan Singh Ji, Shri Ajatshatru Singh, Shri Vikramaditya
Singh and the Members of Parliament, leaders of religious and social
organizations and groups should come forward and condemn the remarks
against the late Maharaja in a programme broadcast by Akashvani/ All
India Radio in the strongest possible terms so that such mistakes are not
repeated in future.
It was further resolved that all Jammu based Members of Parliament
should vigorously raise the issues in respective houses of the Parliament,
of lackadaisical approach of the agencies engaged by the government in
restoration and revival of Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex and other
declared protected monuments of Jammu,, and appeal to the government
to gear up in true spirit of the works.
It was also resolved that DSS and like-minded people will strive to bring
together different organisations of Jammu region to celebrate the
forthcoming Birth Anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji and demanding

holiday on the Day unitedly. Further, a befitting tribute shall be paid to the
late Maharaja on the Independence Day this 15th of August.

Dhankar’s knowledge of law should serve him well in RS

The National Democratic Alliance has declared Mr Jagdeep Dhankar its candidate for the office of the VicePresident of India, the second highest constitutional office in the country. Given the numbers of the NDA in Parliament, Mr. Dhankar will most probably be elected as the Vice-President of India. The BJP president J. P. Nadda called him a “Kisan Putra” who had established himself as a “People’s Governor”. He will be the second Jat leader to reach high constitutional office in the country, after Chaudhary Charan Singh who had become the Prime Minister of India in 1979 for a short period. For the community of farmers, it is indeed a matter of great pride that a farmer’s son will be elected to the office of the Vice-President of India. In Indian social life, the sons and daughters of farmers face several difficulties and hurdles in getting good opportunities.

Mr. Dhankar’s election will certainly boost the collective confidence of the farming community. As Mr. Dhankar is a lawyer by profession, the lawyer’s community will also be elated about his election as the Vice-President of India. Mr Dhankar belongs to Rajasthan. He was born in a farmers’ family in 1951 in district Jhunjhunu. He comes from a humble background and is considered a self-made man who achieved all heights because of his hard work, sincerity, and commitment. After earning his LL.B. degree from the University of Rajasthan, he started the legal practice at the High Court of Rajasthan. He has been in public life for more than four decades. The first time he was elected as a Member of the Lok Sabha was in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket at a young age and was lucky to get the guidance of farmers’ leader, Chaudhary Devi Lal, popularly known as Tau Devi Lal in Parliament. Mr. Chandra Shekhar was also fond of him. This is the reason he was selected as Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs in his government.

When the Chandra Shekhar government came out of office, Mr Dhankar returned to law practice in the Rajasthan High Court but did not change his political commitments as most politicians do after losing power. He continued his mission for the welfare of farmers and weaker sections of society and never hesitated to speak for them. He also remained a Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from the Kishangarh constituency in Alwar. After a long time, he became active in politics once again and joined the BJP because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and image. After joining the BJP, Mr. Dhankar got a very responsible position as the Governor of West Bengal in 2019, mostly considered a tough state. His training as a lawyer helped him to keep a constitutional check on the TMC government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He made headlines several times for his gubernatorial statements. He visited several places in West Bengal and acted as an active Governor who keeps himself busy in public service. He had differences with Mamata Banerjee on various issues including the law-and-order situation in the state and utilized all his powers to check the government. However, the media and the TMC also accused him of exceeding his constitutional limitations many times. He effectively used his powers under Article 167 of the Constitution to monitor the functioning of the TMC government and kept the Union Government informed about the West Bengal government. He got full support from the Union Government and sent a strong message that the Governor is not a rubber stamp. For him, it was not an easy task to work as a Governor in West Bengal as often his remarks were met with severe criticism by the TMC leadership in West Bengal.

The BJP leadership got impressed with his work as the Governor of West Bengal and selected him for the office of the Vice-President of India. As Mr. Dhankar is going to occupy the office of the Vice-President of India, people have many expectations from him. His main function as the Vice-President of India will be centered on and around Rajya Sabha as its chairperson. Thus, he will have to make a balance in the House and treat all political parties equally. He will be a link between the government and the opposition and would have to facilitate a decent discussion in Rajya Sabha.

He needs to protect the interests of the minorities and weaker sections in parliamentary dialogues. It is believed that he will conduct the Rajya Sabha proceedings effectively since he has been a lawyer of the Supreme Court and High Courts and is well-versed in the constitutional and parliamentary laws relating to the conduct of proceedings in Parliament. In his media statement, Prime Minister Modi also appreciated his contribution to the legal profession. “He is also well-versed with legislative affairs. I am sure that he will be an outstanding chair in the Rajya Sabha and guide the proceedings of the House with the aim of furthering national progress”, PM Modi said at the time of the announcement of Mr Dhankar’s name for the office of VicePresident.

To a great extent, the negative effects of air pollution and noise pollution on the human body are reduced. Along with this, the temperature of the earth also stops rising, that is, trees and plants help us in many ways, but still nowadays trees are being cut indiscriminately.
