J&K’s Development Directly Linked To Its Youth: LG Sinha

0

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday described the human mind as the “greatest miracle of life,” emphasizing that the future of Jammu and Kashmir’s development is directly connected with the empowerment and creativity of its youth.

Addressing a gathering, the Lieutenant Governor said, “Jammu and Kashmir ka vikas seedha yuva shakti ke saath juda hua hai. We have to build such an environment that can turn them into innovators, problem-solvers, and leaders of tomorrow.”

Highlighting the power of the human intellect, LG Sinha said that a child who learns simple calculations like addition, subtraction, and multiplication early in life develops sharper life skills and decision-making abilities. “These basic skills help young minds to think analytically and make quick, effective decisions,” he added.

The LG went on to cite a fascinating example from the tech world, referring to Google’s initiative to count books across libraries worldwide. “Google had started counting the books in libraries and found that there are nearly 13 crore unique books in the world.

The knowledge contained in these 13 crore books can fit into the brain of a human being,” he said, underlining the limitless potential of the human mind. “If any person learns to use his mind fully, the knowledge of the entire world can go into his brain,” LG Sinha said, adding, “Harnessing this mental potential can pave the way for innovation, wisdom, and progress.”

Calling upon the youth to think beyond boundaries and use their intellect for nation-building, LG Sinha said that empowering young minds with curiosity, knowledge, and discipline would determine the Union Territory’s march toward a prosperous future. (KNO)

Bombay High Court Sacks Two Lower Court Judges For Misconduct

The Bombay High Court has dismissed two lower court judges accused of corruption for misconduct and behaviour unbecoming of officials of the judiciary.

The decision to dismiss additional sessions judge Dhananjay Nikam and civil judge Irfan Shaikh was taken following an inquiry by a disciplinary committee.

While Nikam has been accused of bribery, Shaikh, who presided over cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, allegedly indulged in corruption and misappropriated narcotic substances seized during investigations.

A petition filed in the high court against Shaikh is still pending.

The high court ordered their dismissal on Friday.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had registered a case against Nikam, Satara district and sessions judge, for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh to grant bail in a cheating case.

In January, he approached the high court seeking anticipatory bail, claiming that he was innocent and had been implicated in the case.

The high court denied him pre-arrest bail in March.

As per the complaint lodged by a woman, her father, a civilian defence employee, is in judicial custody for allegedly cheating someone under the pretext of offering a government job.

After a lower court denied his bail, the woman filed a fresh bail application in the Satara sessions court, and Nikam heard the plea.

The ACB has alleged that one Kishor Sambhaji Kharat from Mumbai and Anand Mohan Kharat from Satara demanded Rs 5 lakh from the woman at Nikam’s behest for a favourable order.

The probe agency claimed that the bribe demand was verified during their investigation between December 3 and 9, 2024, confirming that Nikam, in collusion with the Kharats, sought the bribe.

The ACB has booked Nikam, the Kharats, and an unidentified individual under the Prevention of Corruption Act. (Agencies)

Economic Offences Wing Registers Case In Fake NHM Selection List Scam

0

The Economic Offences Wing (Crime Branch Kashmir) has registered a case in connection with the circulation of a forged selection list allegedly issued under the National Health Mission (NHM) JK.

The EOW said the case was registered after the State Nodal Officer, NHM J&K, reported that a fake order purportedly signed by the Mission Director was being widely circulated on social media, creating confusion among aspirants.

The fraudulent order, titled “Provisional Selection List of Candidates for Different Posts (Kashmir Division) against Notification No. SHS/NHM/J&K/HR/10259 dated 10.05.2021.

Following the complaint, a preliminary probe was initiated at Police Station Crime Branch Kashmir (now Economic Offences Wing).

During the investigation, it surfaced that during the COVID-19 pandemic, an NGO, J&K Health Care Services, was approved by the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir for providing voluntary manpower in various medical blocks of Kashmir to overcome the staff shortage.

“However, the management members of the said NGO, under a well-planned conspiracy, took undue advantage of this approval. They fraudulently approached volunteers, obtained their documents on the pretext of securing permanent engagement under NHM, and also collected money from them. Subsequently, they prepared a fake selection list by forging the signatures of the Mission Director, NHM J&K,” the EOW said.

The accused were identified as Abdul Qayoom Naik of Check Feroz Pora, Tangmarg Baramulla; Abdul Qayoom Khan of Harwan at present Ompora, Budgam; Mohammad Ashraf Hurrah of Saria Bala, Srinagar; Mushtaq Ahmad Sofi and Hilal Ahmad Bahar both residents of Shadipora, Sumbal, Bandipora

“Their acts prima facie disclose commission of offences punishable under sections 420, 468, 471, 120-B RPC read with Section 66-D of the IT Act. Accordingly, cognizance has been taken and a formal case has been registered,” the statement said. (Agencies)

Army Chief Dwivedi Warns Pakistan: Stop Sponsoring Terrorism or Risk Your Place on World Map

Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Friday issued a stern warning to Pakistan, saying the neighbour must stop sponsoring terrorism on its soil if it wishes to retain its standing on the global stage. Speaking to troops at Anupgarh in Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar district, he added that the restraint shown by India during Operation Sindoor would not necessarily be repeated in any future conflict.

“India, as a country, is fully prepared this time. And this time, it will not show the restraint that it showed during Operation Sindoor 1.0. This time we will take a step forward and act in a manner that will make Pakistan think whether it wants to remain on the world map or not,” Gen. Dwivedi said.

He urged soldiers to stay ready: “Keep yourselves fully prepared now, if God wills, the opportunity will come soon.” The Army chief also said India had exposed evidence of terrorist hideouts in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor — evidence that, he said, might otherwise have been concealed.

Gen. Dwivedi said the international community stood with India after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and described strikes carried out under Operation Sindoor: nine targets inside Pakistan were hit — seven by the Army and two by the Air Force — aimed at terrorist bases, not ordinary citizens. He reiterated that as long as Pakistan sponsors terrorists, such targets will be struck.

Addressing civilians near the international border, the Army chief called them partners in the nation’s defence, saying border populations stand “shoulder to shoulder” with soldiers and urging their continued support in any future struggle.

Police Attach Property of Terrorist Handler in Handwara

In a firm action against the terror ecosystem, Handwara police attached the property of a terrorist handler in Palpora village of Kralgund on 4th March 2023. This action underscores a strong commitment to dismantling the local support structures for terrorism.

A police spokesperson revealed that the operation connected to FIR No. 73/2011 of Police Station Kralgund. Investigations identified Nazir Ahmad Ganai, a resident of Palpora who currently operates from Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), as actively involved in managing and guiding terror activities in the region.

“Following due legal procedures and obtaining sanctions from the competent authority, Ganai’s land in Palpora was attached in the presence of police and revenue officials,” the spokesperson affirmed. This attachment symbolizes a fortified stance against individuals undermining local peace and security.

Police assured that they will continue their rigorous measures to dismantle terror networks persisting in the area. Such actions not only target individuals like Ganai but also aim to disrupt the broader connectivity of terrorist activities.

The police stated that these efforts reflect their resolve to act strictly against handlers and anti-national elements. They urged the community to collaborate in maintaining law and order, emphasizing that strict legal action would follow anyone found supporting such anti-national activities.

As part of ongoing operations, police hope that this decisive measure will serve as a warning against supporting any form of terrorism. Members of the community can play a critical role by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities.

Mehbooba Mufti Criticizes Police Move on Geelani’s House

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday criticized the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s decision to attach the Hyderpora residence of the late separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. This house, also the headquarters of his outfit Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, is located in central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

Mufti labeled the action as “unfortunate and inhuman” during a press conference in Anantnag. She pointed out that Geelani’s 80-year-old widow continues to reside there. “Today is Gandhi Ji’s day,” she remarked, adding that, “He once saw a ray of light in Kashmir when all of Asia was burning. Now, this same Kashmir is perceived as criminal, with its people being branded as criminals, and their homes and businesses treated as such.”

The PDP president accused the government of criminalizing normal Kashmiris. “Geelani Sahib has left this world, but his widow still lives there. You might disagree with him, as we do with RSS ideology, but attaching his home is inhuman. The BJP protests across Bihar over an insult to ‘mother,’ yet here, even an 80-year-old widow faces such treatment,” she stated.

Mufti warned that the police’s actions would further alienate the people of Kashmir. “By attaching Geelani’s house, you aren’t narrowing distances but rather widening them. You’ve banned JEI schools, targeted madrasas, and now you attach homes. What have you made of Kashmir?” she questioned, highlighting the continuing tensions in the region.

She drew comparisons with other global conflicts, suggesting that even groups like Israel and Hamas engage in dialogue, while in Kashmir, the situation worsens. “In Kashmir—where people stood with you in 1947—you are criminalizing them. This is very bad,” she lamented.

On Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir Police announced that the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat headquarters had been attached under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Officials noted that the three-story building, built on one kanal and one marla of land, served as Geelani’s base for running his organization. The Union Home Ministry had banned Tehreek-e-Hurriyat in 2023, stating it was involved in “fomenting terrorism and spreading anti-India propaganda.” Geelani passed away in September 2022 and was buried near the same residence.

In her remarks, Mufti further criticized the ruling BJP, arguing that the party incites communal hatred to divert attention from its governance failures. “They have no jobs, no hospitals, no roads. So they divide Hindus and Muslims to seek votes. What should I say about Yogi Ji, Bulldozer Baba? May God grant them wisdom,” she said, reflecting on the state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir.

Snow Leopard Population in Himachal Pradesh Soars 62% in Four Years

The population of rare snow leopards in Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude tribal regions has grown by an impressive 62 per cent over the past four years, according to a newly released wildlife survey. The count, which stood at 51 in 2021, has now increased to 83, officials from the state Forest Department’s Wildlife Wing announced on Friday.

The survey, conducted over the previous year, marks a significant milestone in the successful implementation of long-term conservation strategies that actively involve local communities. Released on the first day of Wildlife Week (October 2–8), the report revealed that this count excluded cubs and exceeded the upper confidence estimate of 73 from the 2021 survey. This suggests a possible expansion of habitats for these elusive creatures.

The winter survey utilized a thorough camera-trapping exercise across six sites, encompassing nearly 26,000 sq km. These stunning landscapes included regions of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Pangi Valley, with notable sightings reported both within and beyond protected areas like Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, Great Himalayan National Park, Sechu Tuan Nallah Wildlife Sanctuary, and Asrang Wildlife Sanctuary.

In addition to snow leopards, officials mapped populations of crucial prey species such as blue sheep, Himalayan ibex, and musk deer. Other mammals including Himalayan wolves, brown bears, leopards, red foxes, and martens also featured prominently in the survey results.

Noteworthy discoveries included the first official sighting of Pallas’s cat in Kinnaur and the rediscovery of the woolly flying squirrel in Lahaul, underscoring the biodiversity richness within the state.

Officials emphasized that the success of this survey significantly stemmed from active community involvement. Local youth and women from Kibber village participated in camera trap deployments and data analysis, while forest officers collaborated with villagers to support field operations. In contrast to the earlier survey which took three years for completion, this assessment was concluded in just one year.

Based on its cost-effective methodologies, the survey has managed to create a scalable framework for long-term snow leopard monitoring in India. With its comprehensive approach, Himachal Pradesh has positioned itself as the first state in the country to carry out a second statewide snow leopard assessment, reinforcing its commitment to wildlife conservation.

IAF Chief Confirms Destruction of 4-5 Pakistani F-16s in Operation Sindoor

0

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has confirmed the destruction of 4 to 5 Pakistani fighter jets, believed to be F-16s, during a decisive military operation named Operation Sindoor. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh communicated these developments at a press conference held in New Delhi on Friday.

Singh revealed that the IAF executed precision airstrikes on multiple Pakistani airbases, significantly damaging crucial military infrastructure. Key targets included radars, command centres, runways, hangars, and a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. Notably, a C-130-class transport aircraft, along with potentially a high-value surveillance plane, also sustained damage during these operations.

“We targeted a substantial number of their airfields and installations…radars at four locations, command centres at two sites, two runways, and three hangars were destroyed. We have unequivocal evidence of hitting one C-130 aircraft and at least 4–5 fighters, likely F-16s, that were undergoing maintenance at the time,” stated the Air Chief Marshal.

The operations noted the deployment of newly procured long-range SAMs, which effectively hindered the operational capacity of the Pakistan Air Force within its own airspace. This mission achieved a historic milestone, marking the longest successful missile strike of over 300 kilometres, severely crippling Pakistan’s aerial response capabilities.

Describing the operation as a decisive and time-bound success, Singh remarked, “This was a conflict initiated with a clear objective and concluded efficiently once we accomplished our aims. In contrast to protracted global warfare, India demonstrated that clarity and precision can compel an adversary to seek a ceasefire.”

Singh also asserted that the outcomes of Operation Sindoor should serve as a crucial lesson for the international community. The operation underscores a strategic approach at a time when various global conflicts appear to remain unresolved.

Siraj and Bumrah Rattle Windies; Rahul Steadies India Day 1

0

Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah showcased their bowling prowess on Thursday, as they rattled the West Indies batting lineup for just 162 runs, setting India on a strong footing on the opening day of the first Test. The duo’s exceptional performances at Wankhede Stadium have put India firmly in control of the match.

Siraj, with remarkable figures of 4 for 40, ignited the day with three early wickets, dismantling the Windies batting order. He returned after lunch to claim one more wicket, further crippling the visitors. Bumrah complemented him effectively, bowling with his trademark yorkers to end the innings with 3 for 32. Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar also contributed with two and one wicket, respectively, as the Windies struggled to build any substantial partnerships.

The West Indies fought valiantly, with only a few batsmen crossing the 30-run mark. Justin Greaves top-scored with 32 runs, while Shai Hope contributed 26 runs, and skipper Roston Chase managed 24. However, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure from India’s fiery bowling attack.

In response, India faced an early challenge but ended Day 1 comfortably at 121 for 2, leaving them just 41 runs behind. KL Rahul anchored the innings superbly, notching up 53 not out off 114 balls, with a solid approach that kept the opposition bowlers at bay. His calm demeanor helped steady the ship after a faltering start.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal added a brisk 36 runs before edging a delivery from Jayden Seales. Meanwhile, debutant B Sai Sudharsan had a disappointing outing, contributing only 7 runs before falling to Chase. Captain Shubman Gill provided competent support to Rahul, remaining unbeaten on 18.

Despite a brief rain interruption that threatened to derail the batting side, Rahul’s composed knock ensured that India ended the day on a high note. The visitors now face a steep challenge if they are to compete effectively in this two-Test series.

This performance by Siraj and Bumrah not only highlights India’s bowling depth but also sets a competitive tone for the rest of the match. As the series progresses, the focus will remain on how the West Indies respond to this daunting start, while India looks to maintain its momentum in front of a passionate home crowd.
