PM Modi Begins 25th Year As Head Of Govt, Says Improving Lives His Constant Endeavour

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday began his 25th year as the head of a government, asserting that improving the lives of people and contributing to the progress of this great nation have been his constant endeavour.

He noted in a post on X that he had taken oath on this day in 2001 as Gujarat’s chief minister for the first time.

“Thanks to the continuous blessings of my fellow Indians, I am entering my 25th year of serving as the head of a Government. My gratitude to the people of India,” Modi said.

He added, “Through all these years, it has been my constant endeavour to improve the lives of our people and contribute to the progress of this great nation that has nurtured us all.”

After spearheading the BJP to victory in three consecutive assembly polls in Gujarat, he has led the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance to win in three successive national elections.

As an incumbent, Modi has never faced an electoral defeat and holds the record as the longest head of a government, including as chief minister for more than 12-and-a-half years, among all prime ministers. (AGENCIES)

Gold Futures Climb Rs 651 To Record Rs 1,20,900/10 G As Global Jitters Fuel Safe Haven Rush

0

Gold prices on Tuesday jumped Rs 651 to hit a fresh peak of Rs 1,20,900 per 10 grams in the domestic futures market, buoyed by strong global cues amid the prolonged US government shutdown and growing bets of rate cuts by Federal Reserve at its upcoming meeting.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), the yellow metal futures for December delivery appreciated by Rs 651, or 0.54 per cent, to hit a record high of Rs 1,20,900 per 10 grams.

The February 2026 contract for gold futures increased by Rs 648, or 0.53 per cent, to hit a lifetime high of Rs 1,22,231 per 10 grams.

“Gold prices rose to an all-time high on US economic and political uncertainties and expectations of further interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve,” Manav Modi, Analyst – Precious Metal Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, said.

Meanwhile, silver futures gained Rs 281, or 0.19 per cent, to trade near their record high of Rs 1,47,800 per kilogram. The white metal had hit its peak of Rs 1,47,977 per kg on Monday.

The March 2026 contract for silver futures advanced Rs 327, or 0.21 per cent, to Rs 1,49,500 per kg, after touching a lifetime high of Rs 1,49,605 per kilogram in the previous session.

Globally, Comex gold futures for December delivery breached the key USD 4,000 per ounce mark for the first time, by rising nearly 1 per cent on Tuesday.

However, silver futures for December delivery were quoting marginally lower at USD 48.43 per ounce.

Analysts said the ongoing US government shutdown has disrupted key federal programmes and delayed the release of crucial economic data, including the September jobs report. The absence of official US macroeconomic indicators, coupled with rising expectations of two Federal Reserve rate cuts this year, has further strengthened demand for the yellow metal.

“Additionally, sustained gold buying by global central banks also continues to power the record rally in the precious metal prices,” an expert said.

The latest data from the World Gold Council (WGC) showed that central bank gold buying rebounded in August, with global reserves rising by 15 tonnes during the month.

According to data from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), the country’s gold holdings totalled 74.06 million fine troy ounces at the end of September, up from 74.02 million in the previous month, as the central bank expanded bullion purchases for the 11th straight month.

Manav Modi of Motilal Oswal Financial Services said traders will closely watch comments from several Federal Reserve officials later in the day for further cues on the monetary policy outlook.

“Focus this week will also be on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes and Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech on Thursday for fresh insights on the US economy and the Fed’s path forward on interest rates,” he added. (Agencies)

Major Highways, Roads Closed Due To Heavy Rain, Snowfall In Jammu And Kashmir

The traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar and Srinagar-Leh national highways along with Mughal and Sinthan top roads was suspended on Tuesday following multiple landslides triggered by heavy rain and snow accumulation in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The high-altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall, while the plains were lashed by heavy overnight rain, resulting in a considerable drop in the mercury.

A traffic department official said the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country, was closed for vehicular movement on Tuesday morning due to landslides and shooting of stones at multiple locations between Udhampur and Banihal.

Road clearance agencies have been mobilised to make the road trafficable as soon as possible, the official said, adding that they are hopeful of clearing the traffic, which has been stopped at Nagrota in Jammu, by late afternoon.

The traffic on the highway is plying alternatively from the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu in view of the ongoing repair work after the arterial road suffered heavy damage following record rainfall in August-September. Traffic was scheduled to ply from Jammu to Srinagar during the day.

The 434-km Srinagar-Leh National Highway along with Mughal and Sinthan roads that provide alternative connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country are also closed due to snow accumulation, the spokesman said.

He said people are advised not to travel till the roads are fully restored.

Officials said the Zojila pass along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway recorded six inches of snowfall.

The Peer Ki Gali along the Mughal road, connecting the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri in Jammu with south Kashmir’s Shopian district and the Sinthan top in Kishtwar district witnessed three to four inches of snowfall.

Reports of snowfall were also received from the upper reaches of Doda, Ramban, Kishtwar, Kathua, Rajouri and Poonch districts in the Jammu region.

The weather department has predicted improvement in the overall weather from Wednesday, with no possibility of rain or snowfall during the next fortnight.

The pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi temple atop the Trikuta Hills in Reasi district and the Machail Mata shrine in Kishtwar district remained suspended for the third day on Tuesday owing to inclement weather.

Both the pilgrimages are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

All government and private schools remained closed for the second day across the Jammu division on Tuesday.

Udhampur in Jammu division recorded the highest rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am Tuesday at 100.2 mm, followed by 98.2 mm in Batote and 75.8 mm in Banihal, 44 mm in Katra – the base camp for the pilgrims visiting Vaishno Devi — and 38.6 mm in Jammu city, a spokesman of the meteorological department said.

Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of of 21.3 degrees Celsius, 11.1 degrees below normal during this part of the season, while the minimum temperature also fell almost by six degrees to 15 degrees Celsius, the weather department said. (Agencies)

India Defeats Pakistan by 88 Runs in Women’s World Cup

0

In a thrilling ICC Women’s World Cup encounter, India dominated Pakistan with an impressive 88-run victory in a high-stakes match on Sunday at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This commanding win saw India continue its unbeaten run against Pakistan, extending the record to 12-0 in ODIs.

The match saw contrasting performances from two Indian players, with Harleen Deol scoring a composed 46 off 65 balls and Richa Ghosh contributing an explosive 35 off just 20 deliveries. Their efforts helped India post a solid total of 247 all out on a difficult pitch, despite initial confusion during the toss which mistakenly awarded Pakistan the decision to bowl first.

In reply, Pakistan struggled against a disciplined bowling attack led by Kranti Gaud, who took 3 wickets for 20 runs. Alongside her, Deepti Sharma and Shree Charani added further pressure on the Pakistani batsmen. The results were catastrophic for Pakistan, as they collapsed to 159 all out in 43 overs.

Despite a valiant effort from Sidra Amin, who scored 81 runs off 106 balls, the team failed to mount a serious challenge. Amin’s effort stood as a lone flicker of hope amid a faltering batting line-up.

The match unfolded with its fair share of drama, starting with a significant toss blunder. Furthermore, Pakistan faced a bizarre run-out and a surprising 15-minute delay due to a swarm of bugs invading the field. Following the game, India adhered to their “no-handshake” policy, maintaining the tension between the teams.

Pakistan’s innings got off to a disastrous start. Muneeba Ali, who scored 2 runs, was run out in a comical fashion after misjudging a live ball. Deepti Sharma’s26 for 3.

While Amin and Natalia Pervaiz (who added a short-lived 33 runs) created a brief resistance with their 69-run partnership, their dismissal saw the remaining batters collapse quickly.

Earlier in the match, India’s innings revolved around Deol’s steady knock and Ghosh’s explosive finish. Pratika Rawal set the pace with a quick 31 runs while hitting three boundaries in a row against Diana Baig, but fell victim to the well-planned deliveries by Fatima Sana, who took 2 wickets for 38 runs.

Diana Baig later wreaked havoc on India’s batting order with her impressive bowling, ending with figures of 4 for 69. Despite several ups and downs, India’s middle order showed resilience, with Harmanpreet Kaur (19 runs) and Jemimah Rodrigues (32 runs) putting up solid partnerships, anchoring the innings sensibly.

Just when Pakistan envisioned the tide turning in their favor, Richa Ghosh unleashed her attacking game, hitting three fours and two towering sixes in a critical attempt to push India beyond 250 runs.

Ultimately, the Indian bowlers translated their solid batting performances into a decisive victory, emphasizing their dominance in the match and sealing the win with clinical accuracy.

Brief Scores:

India Women: 247 all out in 50 overs (Harleen Deol 46, Richa Ghosh 35*, Jemimah Rodrigues 32; Diana Baig 4/69, Fatima Sana 2/38).

Pakistan Women: 159 all out in 43 overs (Sidra Amin 81; Kranti Gaud 3/20, Deepti Sharma 3/45, Shree Charani 2/38).

Result: India won by 88 runs.

Unity Run Celebrates 150th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Patel

0

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister and renowned freedom fighter, on October 31 with a nationwide initiative called the ‘Sardar@150’ Unity Run. This initiative will feature padyatras across all 779 districts of the country, running from October 31 to November 25.

During a launch event at the Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi on Monday, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State for Defence Nikhil Khadse emphasized the purpose of the Unity Run. Mandaviya noted,

Sardar@150 is not merely a commemoration but a national movement to engage youth in nation-building. Just as Sardar Patel united over 560 princely states to forge a strong and united India, this initiative seeks to channel the energy of young Indians towards strengthening national unity.

The event comprises three-day padyatras in each parliamentary constituency, covering 8 to 10 km daily. Mandaviya reiterated that all 779 districts will honor Sardar Patel’s memory and his unparalleled contributions to national integration.

When questioned about participation from opposition-ruled states, including flood-affected West Bengal, Mandaviya remarked that the initiative is “beyond politics.” He expressed confidence that there would be full participation, irrespective of political affiliations.

“This has got nothing to do with politics, and I am sure there will be wholehearted participation irrespective of who is in power,”

he added.

Leading the padyatras will be Union Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, and supported by volunteers from organizations like My Bharat, NSS, and NCC. These volunteers will help coordinate logistics and cleanliness drives during the events.

On a national scale, a special padyatra will take place from November 26 to December 6, traversing 152 km from Karamsad in Gujarat, Sardar Patel’s birthplace, to the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, the world’s tallest statue erected in his honor.

In this symbolic padyatra, 150 young leaders, selected through a national-level quiz competition, will honor the legacy of the Iron Man of India with their participation.

ED Attaches ₹40 Crore in Karnataka MUDA Corruption Probe

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken significant action against corruption in Karnataka by attaching fresh assets worth ₹40 crore linked to the Karnataka MUDA money laundering investigation. This latest attachment occurs amid an ongoing probe into serious allegations of financial misconduct.

This provisional attachment order affects 34 immovable properties, which include several sites owned by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA). The agency issued the order on October 4 under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

With the market value of these recently attached assets estimated at ₹40.08 crore, the total value of properties attached by the ED has now reached a staggering ₹400 crore as part of this extensive investigation.

The investigation stems from an FIR filed by the Karnataka Lokayuktha Police, highlighting the deep-seated corruption affecting MUDA’s operations. Former MUDA Commissioner GT Dinesh Kumar, arrested in September, remains in judicial custody while the investigation continues.

The ED’s probe has revealed a systematic method of layering and routing funds, which allegedly constituted “undue gratification” received by Kumar. Reports indicate that the crime proceeds were used to acquire properties in the names of Kumar’s relatives and associates.

“Such proceeds of crime were used for purchasing immovable properties in the name of relatives and associates of GT Dinesh Kumar. Further investigation also found illegal allotment of 31 MUDA sites by Kumar,”

the agency stated, underscoring the gravity of the allegations. Furthermore, the ED alleges a profound connection between MUDA officials and real estate businessmen, claiming substantial cash transactions for site allotments and approval processes, indicating a widespread corruption network.

Significantly, this case has also drawn attention due to its implications for Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Reports suggest potential irregularities related to land allotment granted to Parvathi, his wife. However, in a pivotal ruling, the Supreme Court upheld a Karnataka High Court order in July 2024, which quashed ED proceedings against her.

The Justice P.N. Desai Commission, initiated by the state government to investigate this matter, notably exonerated Siddaramaiah and his family. Additionally, the Lokayuktha Police has provided a clean chit to Siddaramaiah, Parvathi, and two other individuals, citing a lack of substantial evidence against them.

As the ED continues its crackdown on financial malpractice, many observers are watching closely to see how this investigation unfolds further. The agency’s ongoing focus on property attachments aims to disrupt the financial networks tied to this high-profile case, casting a spotlight on corruption within Karnataka’s urban development structure.

The counting of votes will take place on November 14, with the entire process concluding by November 16. This announcement has triggered significant interest as millions prepare to participate in this crucial democratic exercise.

Kumar, emphasizing the election’s importance, referred to it as the “mother of all elections”. He underscored the Election Commission’s commitment to transparency and integrity during the election process across all constituencies. This upcoming election cycle is poised to shape the political landscape of Bihar significantly.

According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, a total of 121 Assembly constituencies will go to the polls in the first phase on November 6. The second phase will cover 122 constituencies on November 11. The counting process is crucial, as it determines the future leadership of the state, and the Chief Election Commissioner has stressed that postal ballot counting must precede final count rounds.

“It is mandatory to complete counting of postal ballots before the last two rounds of counting of votes,”

said the Chief Election Commissioner, clarifying procedures critical to ensuring reliable election outcomes.

The nomination process for candidates opens the door to various contenders, with significant deadlines approaching. For the first phase, the last date for filing nominations is set for October 17, followed by scrutiny on October 18. Candidates must withdraw their nominations by October 20.

In the second phase, candidates must submit their nominations by October 20. Scrutiny will unfold on October 21, and the final date for withdrawal is October 23. These dates are critical for the political parties as they strategize their approaches and candidates for the elections.

The term of the current Bihar Legislative Assembly ends on November 22, making this election not only necessary but urgent. With 243 Assembly constituencies in total—including two reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 38 for Scheduled Castes (SC)—the elections will reflect the diverse representation of the state’s population.

The upcoming Bihar Assembly elections are drawing the attention of political analysts, parties, and the public as they prepare for a robust electoral contest. The implications of these elections could resonate through Bihar’s governance and political direction in the years to follow.

AICC Launches Signature Campaign Against Vote Chori Nationwide

0

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) launched a nationwide signature campaign today, aiming to collect 5 crore signatures to petition the President of India regarding allegations of ‘Vote Chori’ and other electoral malpractices. This initiative kicked off on September 15 and will run until October 15.

Addressing media at Omoh, Verinag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag, AICC General Secretary G.A. Mir highlighted that the campaign focuses on increasing public awareness about voting rights amid claims of malpractices. Mir emphasized that their drive aims to combat what he describes as the ‘theft of votes orchestrated through collusion’ between the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP.

During his statement, Mir raised alarms over alleged deletions of approximately 65 lakh votes in Bihar, calling it a “murder of democracy.” He said, “Our petition underscores the critical importance of every vote and the need for vigilant electoral rights protection—this is a first for our democracy since Independence.”

“We are aiming for 5 crore signatures to present the petition to the President. Our campaign has made people aware of the importance of their vote and sensitized them to the protection of electoral rights,” noted Mir.

Mir continued, asserting that across India, voters experience harassment, with reports of both deletions and additions of votes and difficulties in reaching polling booths. “Vote Chori is a crime, a blot on democracy, and a direct assault on the electoral rights of people,” he asserted.

He further stated that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been vocal in exposing systematic manipulation including both deletion of genuine voters and registration of fake votes. This manipulation appears prevalent in states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and now Bihar under the SIR.

Mir affirmed that the AICC, under the guidance of Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, will relentlessly combat the alleged ‘ECI-BJP nexus’ to defend voter identity and electoral rights.

“Powerful start to the Signature Campaign against ‘Vote Chori’ today in Doru Constituency, Anantnag! Hundreds of committed workers joined from my own polling booth to safeguard our democracy. Every signature counts! We won’t let our voices be stolen,” Mir expressed on social media.

MLA Nizam Ud Din Bhat also participated in the campaign, calling it an “indigenous people’s movement” initiated by Rahul Gandhi to defend democracy and the rights of voters. The campaign has garnered support from various corners, urging citizens to come forward and safeguard their democratic rights amidst growing concerns of electoral integrity.

Dr. Jitendra Singh Calls for Transforming Cleanliness Drive into a Nationwide Mass Movement

0

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology; MoS PMO; Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh, called upon ministries and departments to transform the Government’s ongoing cleanliness initiative into a mass movement that combines public participation, innovation, and private sector engagement.

At a high-level review meeting on the implementation of Special Campaign 5.0, Dr. Singh emphasized the need to move beyond symbolic efforts and institutionalize cleanliness, space optimization, and record management as part of day-to-day governance.

“We should integrate technology, community engagement, and private sector collaboration to ensure that the campaign sustains itself throughout the year,” he said.

The Minister supported the idea of leveraging corporate partnerships and MSME collaborations through NASSCOM to bring innovative waste management solutions, particularly in urban clusters, hotels, and government establishments. He noted that the integration of digital technologies and smart recycling models, such as automated waste segregation and electronic scrap management across ministries and sections of society, could not only improve operational efficiency but also generate new livelihood opportunities.

Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted the importance of sharing best practices across ministries, suggesting that successful cleanliness models — from public spaces to educational campuses — be documented and disseminated nationally through a central repository. He also called for identifying innovative initiatives such as electronic file disposal, smart waste reuse, and repurposing cleared government land to set new governance benchmarks.

The Minister observed that the involvement of youth and women could lend renewed energy and creativity to the campaign. “When young people and women join the movement, it becomes more vibrant and impactful,” he remarked, urging that Swachhata messages be amplified through schools, colleges, and My Bharat volunteers to foster a culture of collective responsibility.

Referring to the success of past editions, Dr. Jitendra Singh said the Special Campaign had evolved from a short-term cleanliness drive to a transformative governance model promoting efficiency, transparency, and citizen-centric administration. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to sustaining this momentum under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced that innovative best practices emerging from the campaign would be shared with States, PSUs, and autonomous bodies.

Earlier in his address, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, underscored the importance of behavioural change and youth participation in realizing the vision of “Swachh Bharat.” He suggested appointing student and youth ambassadors from across colleges and universities to spread awareness and motivate communities to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in their surroundings.

The meeting was attended by V. Srinivas, Secretary, DARPG; Sarita Chuhan, Joint Secretary, DARPG; and other senior officials from the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and representatives from allied departments and partner organizations.
