Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Hirdesh Kumar Singh has clarified at the all-party meeting that the actual number of new voters for the assembly election would be known only after the summary revision of electoral rolls in the Union Territory.

The CEO was trying to clear the air on the controversy created by his earlier statement in which he had told the media that 25 lakh new voters would become eligible for the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K.

Sources told IANS that during the meeting, which held on Monday, the CEO said that the figure of 25 lakh new voters had no sanctity as the actual number would be known only after the revision of the electoral rolls.

Representatives of BJP, National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Congress, BSP, Peoples Conference (PC), Apni Party, JK National Panthers Party and Ikkjutt Jammu party attended the meeting.

The inclusion of non-locals in the revised electoral rolls was opposed by the participants other than the BJP and the Ikkjutt Jammu party while the CEO said that the eligibility of voters would be determined as per the provisions of the Representation of the Peoples Act of 1950-1951.

The CEO made it clear to the participants that only those who are eligible as per the Representation of The Peoples Act-1951 would be registered as voters.

Ratan Lal Gupta of the NC told reporters that the CEO had assured them that no non-local would be included in the revised electoral list.

Yogesh Sawhney of the Congress said that the CEO had clarified that 25 lakh as the new eligible voters would be those who attained the age of 18 on and after September 1, 2022.

Meanwhile, P.K. Ganju of the National Panthers party also said that the CEO assured that no non-local would be in the revised electoral rolls.

Similarly, Ankur Sharma of Ikkjutt Jammu party said that the CEO informed the meeting about safeguards in place for the new voters. “If someone resides, say for over six to seven months for livelihood or other purposes, they can vote here provided they cancel their vote from other places and give an undertaking in the form of an affidavit,” Sharma said.

However, the PDP leader said that there was no clarity on 25 lakh new voters during the CEO’s meeting.

Abhinav Sharma of the BJP said that since the Representation of People’s Act 1951 has been extended to J&K, any ordinarily residing person has the option to become a voter.

”Body of Hussain was handed over to Pakistan by the Indian Army in the presence of police and civil officers at Chakan Da Bagh crossing point on the LoC in Poonch district,” an army official said.
He said this is probably the first instance in recent past of Pakistan accepting the body of a terrorist.
Pakistan has always declined to accept the bodies of their nationals involved in terror acts in Jammu and Kashmir, the official said.
Hussain, a trained Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) guide and Pakistani Army agent, attempted to infiltrate into this side in Nowshera sector of Rajouri on August 21 when he was shot at and critically injured by the Indian troops.
He was later shifted to military hospital Rajouri where he underwent a surgery during which the soldiers donated three units of blood to save his life. However, he suffered a fatal cardiac arrest on September 3.
All the medico-legal formalities, including postmortem of the deceased, were completed on Sunday and accordingly, Pakistan army was contacted for return of the body, the official said.
On August 24, Army’s 80 Infantry Brigade Commander, Brigadier Kapil Rana said Hussain confessed about his plan to attack the Indian Army post along with two others who, however, fled back after they were intercepted on the LoC in Nowshera sector.
”Hussain revealed that he was sent by a Colonel of Pakistan intelligence Agency named Col Yunus Chaudhry who had paid him Rs 30,000 (Pakistani currency). Hussain also revealed that he, along with other terrorists, had carried two to three close recces of Indian forward posts with an aim to target them at an opportune time.
”The go ahead to target the Indian post was given by Col Chaudhry on August 21,” the brigadier had said.

Delhi liquor scam: Anurag Thakur calls AAP ‘bewdi sarkar’

0

Amid the ongoing faceoff between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the alleged liquor scam, Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Monday called AAP a “bewdi sarkar” and alleged that Delhi Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were involved with the mafia in the liquor scam.

Speaking to media persons in Hamirpur, the Union Minister said they are encouraging the liquor mafia. “The Health Minister of Delhi government is in jail, while the Health Minister of AAP-led Punjab government was also in jail. Imagine the condition of the government whose ministers are in jail for corruption. They are encouraging the liquor mafia. AAP doesn’t have an answer to it. It is a corrupt government. This is the identity of Arvind Kejriwal-led Bewdi sarkar,” said Thakur.

“The AAP government is known for their corruption,” he added, stating,

“Manish Sisodia is involved in a huge scam while Arvind Kejriwal is the kingpin of corruption. AAP is unable to provide an answer till today. Its silence on the liquor scam for 15 days now says a lot,” he said.

The excise policy was passed in Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Cabinet in the middle of the deadly Delta Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. The Delhi government’s version is that the policy was formulated to ensure the generation of optimum revenue, and eradicate the sale of spurious liquor or non-duty paid liquor in Delhi, besides improving user experience.

The Delhi government’s version is that the policy was formulated to ensure the generation of optimum revenue, and eradicate the sale of spurious liquor or non-duty paid liquor in Delhi, besides improving user experience.

The CBI had filed a case against alleged corruption in the 2021-22 excise policy. The excise policy was subsequently withdrawn by the AAP government.

Earlier this month, CBI raids on Manish Sisodia’s official residence in connection with the alleged corruption in the implementation of Delhi’s Excise Policy.

Sisodia was among 15 others booked in an FIR filed by the CBI. Excise officials, liquor company executives, dealers, some unknown public servants and private persons have been booked in the case.

It was alleged that irregularities were committed including modifications in the Excise Policy and undue favours were extended to the license holders including waiver or reduction in licence fee, an extension of L-1 license without approval etc.

However, Sisodia and the AAP have said the corruption allegations are politically motivated. Sisodia had alleged on August 22, that he has received an offer by the BJP to join them by splitting the AAP in return for getting the cases of CBI and ED against him closed.

‘Party is united, we don’t silence anyone’: Congress

NEW DELHI, Sep 5: The Congress Monday asserted it is a united and democratic party, and allows its to leaders express their views openly, rejecting BJP barbs and criticism by former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The assertion came after the BJP took a jibe at it and former Congress leader Azad stated the party should undertake “Congress jodo” before “Bharat Jodo”.
Asked about the BJP swipes, Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said the party is strong and united.
“Those who are disgruntled in the Congress, they keep giving statements. But I think the party is united today. Yesterday the rally was very successful and every worker is committed, there is excitement, energy and our sole aim is to undertake the Bharat Jodo Yatra,” Ramesh told reporters.
“The Congress is a big family and there are people of different views. We are a democratic party, people air their views openly — some write letters, some tweet, some give an interview — and this shows democracy. There is no dictatorship in our party, we don’t silence anyone,” Ramesh said.
He said efforts are made to assuage concerns of leaders “but some people leave despite that, hurling abuses”.
“I don’t want to say anything about them, I have already spoken about them,” he said in an apparent reference to Azad.
“But to say that ‘Congress jodo’ should be our priority, that is wrong, for us the priority is to unite the country,” he asserted. (Agencies)

Good teachers can make complex principles easy to explain: Pres Murmu

0

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, President of India, Droupadi Murmu on Monday conferred National Awards on 45 teachers from across the country at a function held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said, “Science, research and innovation are the basis of development in today’s knowledge economy. The foundation stone for further strengthening India’s position in these areas will be built through school education.”

She said that, in her view, the development of original talent in science, literature, or the social sciences can be more effective through the mother tongue.

“It is our mothers who teach us the art of living in our early lives. That is why mother tongue is helpful in developing natural talent. After the mother, the teachers carry forward our education in our lives,” stated Murmu.

The President also said if teachers also teach in their mother tongue, then students can develop their talent with ease.

“That is why in the National Education Policy 2020, emphasise has been laid on the use of Indian languages for school education and higher education,” she said.

The President said that it is the responsibility of teachers to generate interest in science and research among their students.

“Good teachers can make complex principles easy to explain with the help of living examples that exist in nature,” added Murmu.

She quoted a famous saying about teachers and said “the mediocre teacher tells; the good teacher explains; the superior teacher demonstrates; and the great teacher inspires.”

Murmu said that an ideal teacher has all four qualities. Such ideal teachers build a nation in the true sense by building the lives of the students.

The President urged teachers to encourage the habit of asking questions and expressing doubts in the students. She said that by answering more and more questions and solving doubts, their knowledge would also increase.

On the occasion, President also remembered her teachers and said that they not only taught her but also gave her love and inspiration.

She said that she always feels indebted to her teachers for whatever she has achieved in life.
