Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra scripts another history, becomes Diamond League champion

ZURICH, SEPTEMBER 9: Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra on Thursday achieved yet another historic feat as he became the first Indian to win the prestigious Diamond League Finals title here. Chopra began with a foul but jumped to the top spot with a throw of 88.44m — his fourth career best — in his second attempt, and that turned out to be his winning effort. He had 88.00m, 86.11m, 87.00m and 83.60m in his next four throws.
Olympic silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic finished second with a best throw of 86.94m which he registered in his fourth attempt. Julian Weber of Germany was third with a best of 83.73m
The 24-year-old Indian superstar is now the Olympic champion, World Championships silver medallist and Diamond League champion. All these he had achieved in just 13 months. He had won the Olympic gold on August 7 last year in Tokyo.
He has produced 88m-plus throw six times this season which showed his consistency. He holds the national record of 89.94m, which he achieved this season.
Chopra also ended his international season with a history-scripting performance. The Diamond League Finals can be considered as the most prestigious competition outside of Olympics and World Championships.
It was Chopra’s third appearance in the Diamond League Finals. He had finished seventh and fourth respectively in 2017 and 2018.
Chopra was also awarded a Diamond Trophy, $30,000 prize money and a wild card for the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
He, however, has already qualified for the World Championships as his Lausanne-leg winning throw breached the 85.20m qualifying mark.
The Diamond League encompasses 32 Diamond Disciplines, following a championship style model. Athletes earn points at the 13-series meet to qualify for the final of their respective disciplines.
Chopra had made a spectacular return from a one-month injury lay-off by winning the Lausanne-leg of the Diamond League series on August 26 and qualifying for the Finals here.
He had become the first Indian to clinch a Diamond League meet title in Lausanne with his third career-best throw of 89.08m.
He had missed the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (July 28 to August 8) due to a minor groin injury he had suffered during his silver-winning performance in the World Championships in U.S.A. in July.
The six-man field in Zurich was without world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada, who is recovering from injuries after he was assaulted inside a boat in his country last month.
With Thursday’s win, Chopra has beaten the 31-year-old Vadlejch for the fifth time since winning gold in Tokyo Olympic Games in August last year.
Vadlejch was sixth and fourth when Chopra finished second in Paavo Nurmi Games (June 14) and Stockholm Diamond League (June 30).
While Chopra won silver in World Championships in Eugene, Vadlejch clinched a bronze before the pair again clashed in Lausanne on August 26. (Agencies)

Every citizen should be proud of India becoming world’s fifth largest economy, says PM Modi

0

NEW DELHI, Sept 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 8, 2022 said India has become the fifth largest economy in the world and this is not an ordinary achievement.
“Every Indian is feeling proud of it. We need to maintain this enthusiasm,” Mr. Modi said.
He was virtually addressing beneficiaries of various government schemes and those present at a mega medical camp organised in Olpad area of Surat city in Gujarat, where the Assembly polls are due later this year.
The Prime Minister interacted with some of the beneficiaries and appealed to farmers to switch to natural farming, saying this will result in better yield at minimum cost.
He lauded the Gujarat government and referred to the BJP-led state and the Centre as “double engine government”.
“Recently, India has become the fifth largest economy in the world. This achievement gave us confidence to work even harder and achieve bigger goals in this Amrit Kaal. This progress is not ordinary. Every Indian is feeling proud about it. We need to maintain this enthusiasm,” the Prime Minister said.
Referring to the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, Mr. Modi said, “As many as three crore houses were built by the government across the country for the poor during the last 8 years. Of these, nearly 10 lakh houses were constructed in Gujarat alone.”
Mr. Modi praised the health infrastructure in Gujarat, saying the state has a robust network of multispecialty hospitals.
“The number of medical colleges has gone up from 11 to 31 in the last two decades. An All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is coming up (in Rajkot) and several new medical colleges are also proposed for the state,” he said.
The entire event and the medical camp were organised by Gujarat Minister of State for Agriculture, Energy and Petrochemicals Mukesh Patel, who is the MLA from Olpad in Surat.
On the occasion, Modi urged doctors deployed at the medical camp to talk to patients about their lifestyle and the importance of having nutritious food, which can keep people away from many illnesses.
He said nearly four crore people in the country, including 30 lakh in Gujarat, have already availed benefit of the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme, which provides health cover of up to Rs five lakh per family in a year.
Praising the Gujarat government, Modi said 97 per cent of rural homes in the state are now getting drinking water through the ambitious ‘Nal Se Jal’ scheme.
“Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, farmers across the country have received Rs two lakh crore through direct transfer so far. Sixty lakh farmers from Gujarat and nearly 1.25 lakh farmers from Surat have availed the benefit of this scheme,” he said.
He said farmers earlier used to get nothing despite tall promises made by previous governments at the Centre.
“But, the interests of farmers are always a priority for our double engine government. That is the reason why farmers of the country and Gujarat give us their blessings,” he said.
Before the address, Modi virtually interacted with some of the beneficiaries of the state and centrally sponsored schemes, such as the widow pension, Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.
While talking to Sukhdevsinh Rana, a differently-abled farmer, the PM appealed to all cultivators to switch to natural farming, saying this would provide better yield with minimum cost.
During his interaction with Kanchanben Patel, a widow from Olpad taluka, Mr. Modi asked if coastal villages in Olpad are now getting clean drinking water.
Patel informed the Prime Minister that the government has resolved the issue.
Talking to another widow Kirtiben Patel, Mr. Modi appealed to her to spread awareness about various government schemes in her village so that no eligible person is left behind in getting the benefits. (Agencies)
