India Elevates Kabul Mission to Embassy Status, Strengthening Ties

India officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to the status of a fully functional embassy on Friday, a pivotal move that reinforces its diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan. This decision came during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s discussions with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi.

Following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, India withdrew its diplomatic staff from Kabul. To maintain a connection, it redeployed a small technical team in June 2022. Now, with this upgrade, India intends to enhance its cooperation with Afghanistan, emphasizing humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and regional security efforts.

“Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan,” Jaishankar remarked during the meeting. “As a contiguous neighbour and a well-wisher of the Afghan people, India has a deep interest in your development and progress.” This statement highlights India’s commitment to supporting Afghanistan in various sectors.

Jaishankar reflected on the renewed partnership, mentioning the execution of numerous significant projects in Afghanistan over the years. He noted the Taliban administration’s positive response to India’s security concerns, especially following the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Such considerations underline the complexities of India’s diplomatic approach towards Afghanistan.

Both nations recognize the shared challenges posed by cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” Jaishankar stated, underlining the urgency of collaboration between India and Afghanistan in addressing this common threat.

Expressing gratitude, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi characterized India as a crucial regional partner that has continually extended support to the Afghan populace. He valued India’s humanitarian contributions and emphasized Kabul’s eagerness to broaden cooperation in trade, infrastructure, and education.

The upgrade of India’s diplomatic mission to embassy status marks a significant yet calculated re-engagement with the Taliban-led government. This decision stems from India’s concerns over security, regional stability, and its long-standing relationship with the Afghan people. As India navigates the complexities of this partnership, it remains committed to fostering stability and development in Afghanistan.

SC Gives Centre Four Weeks To Reply On Pleas Seeking Jammu And Kashmir Statehood

0

The Supreme Court on Friday gave the Centre four weeks to file its response to a batch of petitions seeking restoration of statehood to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, according to PTI.

A bench comprising Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran was hearing multiple pleas, including those filed by academician Zahoor Ahmad Bhat and socio-political activist Ahmad Malik, which pressed for implementation of the Centre’s assurance to restore statehood “at the earliest”

Counsel for the petitioners referred to the undertaking recorded in the Supreme Court’s December 2023 judgement that upheld the abrogation of Article 370 and directed that assembly elections be held in the Union Territory by September 2024, with statehood to be restored “at the earliest”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told the bench that consultations were underway with the Jammu and Kashmir administration regarding the restoration of statehood. “This is a sui generis (unique) problem and there are wider concerns involved. Of course, there was a solemn undertaking but several factors need to be considered,” he submitted, PTI reported.

The Solicitor General also alleged that some people were spreading a specific narrative and portraying a grim picture of the Union Territory.

On 11 December 2023, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370, which had accorded special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The judgement ordered that assembly elections be held in the Union Territory by September 2024 and its statehood be restored “at the earliest”.

Last year, a plea was filed in the top court seeking directions to the Centre for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir within two months.

Haryana Cop’s Wife Asks For Change In FIR To ‘Reflect Names Of All Accused’, ‘Appropriate Sections’

0

A day after an FIR was registered in connection with the alleged suicide of senior Haryana police officer Y Puran Kumar, his bureaucrat wife Friday wrote to the police questioning “incomplete information” in it, and asked for it to be amended “to accurately reflect the names of all accused”.

In a letter to Chandigarh police SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, Amneet P Kumar, a senior IAS officer, has also sought that “diluted sections of the SC/ST Act” that have been added in the FIR should be amended.

Chandigarh police late Thursday evening registered an FIR, with charges of abetment to suicide and some provisions of the SC/ST Act on the basis of a ‘final note’ by the deceased police officer who had named many senior IPS officers, and specifically referred to Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya for allegedly harassing and maligning him.

Puran Kumar allegedly shot himself dead at his Chandigarh residence on Tuesday and left behind a ‘final note’.

“An FIR under Section 108 rw 3(5) (abetment of suicide) and 3 (1) (r) POA (Prevention of Atrocities) SC/ST Act, has been registered against the accused mentioned in the final note. Further investigations is underway,” Chandigarh police said in a brief statement on Thursday evening.

Puran Kumar’s wife Amneet Kumar has so far allegedly refused to give permission for the post-mortem of her husband’s body till justice is delivered, according to sources.

In the column meant for naming the accused, the FIR mentions “as per final note”. The FIR has also reproduced the ‘final note’ and the complaint submitted by Amneet Kumar on Wednesday.

In her letter to Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police on Friday, Amneet Kumar titled her communication “regarding incomplete FIR copy and imposition of proper sections of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act”.

“This is to bring to your notice that you personally came to my residence in Sector 24 Chandigarh, to hand over a copy of FIR dated October 9, time 22:22 hrs. However, the said unsigned FIR copy provided to me contains incomplete information,” Amneet, who is also Commissioner and Secretary in Haryana government, wrote.

She said “the names of the accused persons have not been mentioned clearly, and the document lacks the necessary details required for a fair and transparent probe”.

“As per my complaint, the names of the accused (1) (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur (2) Narendra Bijarniya (Rohtak SP) persons have not been entered in the FIR, that was trigger point for his suicide,” she wrote.

“As per the prescribed FIR document format, all the accused should be clearly listed under Columns No 7. It is therefore requested that the FIR be amended to accurately reflect the names of all accused individuals in the proper section,” Amneet wrote.

She said the “diluted sections” of the SC/ST Act that have been added should be amended in the FIR to reflect the appropriate section.

The body of Kumar (52), a 2001-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, who was recently posted as the inspector general of the Police Training Centre (PTC) in Rohtak’s Sunaria, was found with a gunshot wound in a room at the basement of his Sector 11 house. (Agencies)

Govt Cuts 307 House Physician Posts, Creates 121 Senior Resident Posts; AIMSA Terms Move ‘Unfair’

0

The Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered the creation of 121 posts of Senior Residents and Tutors in Government Medical Colleges Srinagar and Jammu by abolishing 307 posts of House Physicians and House Surgeons, drawing criticism from the medical fraternity.

As per Government Order No. 663-JK (HME) of 2025, issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, 54 posts of Senior Residents/Tutors have been created in GMC Srinagar by reducing 137 posts of House Physicians/House Surgeons. Similarly, 67 Senior Resident/Tutor posts have been created in GMC Jammu by reducing 170 such posts.

The order, issued by Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, Secretary to the Government, follows the Council of Ministers’ decision dated September 23, 2025.

However, the move has sparked strong opposition from medical students. Reacting to the development, All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan termed the decision “really unfair.”

“The government has cut 307 House Physician posts to create 121 SR posts, a net loss of 186 jobs. This kills MBBS job opportunities,” Dr. Khan said.

He urged the administration to review the decision, saying it would adversely impact hundreds of MBBS graduates awaiting short-term postings and clinical experience in government hospitals. [KNT]

No one forced me to retire, it was my personal decision: Ashwin

0

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has clarified that his decision to retire from the game was a personal call and “no one forced” him to call it quits midway into the Test tour of Australia tour last year.

Ashwin, 39, stunned the cricket fraternity by announcing his retirement after the third Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane last year.

Subsequently, he also announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) in August this year.

“No one told me that you should go, no one told me that there is no place for you in the team. Actually before I took the decision 2-3 people told me not to take it but I took my decision. In fact, they wanted me to play more,” Ashwin said on his youtube channel.

“Rohit Sharma (the then captain) also told me to think about it, Gauti bhai (Gautam Gambhir) also told me to think again. But I didn’t talk much about it (retirement) with Ajit Agarkar (chairman of selectors).

“The decision is very personal when it comes to retirement. These are all very individual decisions,” he added.

His assertion puts an end to speculation that he was forced to take the decision by the team management.

Ashwin has, however, stated earlier that he didn’t want to be a traveller with the team if he wasn’t going to be picked in the playing XI.

Talking about the senior duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Ashwin felt the team management and the selectors should have clear communication with them.

Both Rohit and Kohli, who have retired from Test and T20 cricket, have been included for the upcoming three ODIs against Australia.

But Rohit, who was the ODI skipper, has been replaced by Shubman Gill in the leadership role.

“Virat Kohli is a bonafide ODI legend. The way he and Rohit batted in 2023 World Cup, they have nothing to prove. I really hope that the conversation happened. Whatever needs to be discussed with Virat and Rohit Sharma must have happened. There should clear communication with them,” Ashwin said.

Ashwin said both Rohit and Kohli have a lot of cricket left in them.

“I don’t think any selector or coach will have it in them to say that Virat and Rohit’s services are no longer needed. That experience you cannot buy in a store,” he said.

“If there is any doubt as to whether they will be able to make it until the 2027 World Cup, then I think the direction they have taken seems to be fair. You cannot go leading up to the World Cup with so many question marks.

“There is no doubt that both Rohit and Virat want to be there (in the 2027 WC). The preparation that we are seeing from them, it is an investment they are putting into their bodies to be ready for the World Cup,” Ashwin added.

Hope Supreme Court Understands Sentiments Of J&K People: Dy CM Surinder Choudhary

0

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to place their trust in the Constitution of India and its democratic institutions, including the Supreme Court.Jammu real estateJobs in Jammu

Speaking to the media, Choudhary said that the residents of J&K have always believed in India’s democratic system and expressed hope that the Supreme Court will take into account the concerns and expectations of ordinary citizens, especially those living in remote and rural areas.

He highlighted the challenges faced by farmers, labourers, and shopkeepers, noting that their daily struggles should be understood by the country’s top court. One of the most pressing concerns, he said, is unemployment among youth in Jammu and Kashmir. “Nearly every household has at least one unemployed young person, and their voices — along with those of their families — deserve to be heard,” he remarked.

Choudhary said that parents across J&K work tirelessly with hopes that their children will find employment and live with dignity. He urged that the Supreme Court must consider these ground realities while deciding matters related to the Union Territory’s governance.Jammu real estateJobs in Jammu

Referring to the political landscape, the Deputy CM pointed out that Jammu and Kashmir has had an elected government for the past year, led by Omar Abdullah, contrasting it with what he described as a previous period of nominated or selected governance.

“The current situation raises an important question — should Jammu and Kashmir be governed by leaders elected by the people or by individuals who have held power without an electoral mandate?” he asked.

Choudhary added that the Supreme Court’s decision will not only have legal implications but will also carry a deep message for the people of the region, who have participated in the democratic process and placed their faith in elected representatives.Jammu real estateJobs in Jammu

He concluded by saying that the aspirations of ordinary people — farmers, drivers, workers, and parents — must remain central to all decisions concerning Jammu and Kashmir’s governance.

Supreme Court To Hear J&K Statehood Pleas Tomorrow

The Supreme Court will hear petitions seeking the restoration of Jammu & Kashmir’s statehood on Friday.

The petitions are listed at serial number 17 before the Court of Chief Justice of India (CJI). “The case is listed for hearing on October 10 before a bench headed by the Chief Justice of India,” advocate Soayib Qureshi said.

On August 14, during the hearing of a petition for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court had stated that the real situation on the ground must be considered and that incidents such as the Pahalgam attack cannot be overlooked.

“You must also take into account the ground realities; you cannot ignore what happened in Pahalgam,” said a bench comprising Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran.

The petitioners have argued that the continued delay in restoring statehood violates the principle of federalism, which is part of the basic structure of the Constitution.

They have also submitted that no steps have been taken to lay out a clear timeline or implement the Supreme Court’s December 2023 directive that ‘restoration of statehood shall take place at the earliest and as soon as possible’. (KNO)
