PAK vs BAN: Mohammad Rizwan continues to impress as Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 21 runs

0

Mohammad Rizwan continued his rich vein of form as Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by 21 runs to win the first T20I of the seven-match tri-series at the Hagley Oval on Friday. Having won the toss and choosing to bowl first, Bangladesh failed to chase down the required 168-run target.

Rizwan, who had finished as the highest run scorer during Asia Cup 2022, and had also impressed in the recently concluded 7-match T20I series against England at home, picked up from where he left off, scoring an unbeaten 78 run knock in 50 balls.

Shan Masood also contributed 31 runs, while skipper Babar Azam could only muster up 22 runs in 25 balls. The Men in Green scored 167 runs in their respective 20 overs, but they successfully restricted the Bangla Tigers to a score of 146 runs.

Yasir Ali’s unbeaten 42-run inning was the pick of the lot, however, the Pak pacers, including Mohammad Wasim and Mohammad Nawaz breathed fire with the ball as they combined for five wickets between them.

Pushed into batting first, Rizwan and captain Babar Azam (22 off 25 balls) added 52 runs for the first wicket in 7.1 overs. The ever-consistent opener, who hit his sixth half-century in last eight T20I innings, then added 42 more runs with Shan Masood, who made 31 off 22 deliveries.

Shan Masood (31 off 22) was Pakistan’s other key contributor, as Haider Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed and Asif Ali couldn’t contribute much to reduce the tension around Pakistan’s fragile middle order. Despite this, Pakistan managed to score 51 runs off the last four overs to post a competitive total against Bangladesh, playing without talismanic all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

In defence of their total, Pakistan pacers were too hot to handle for the Bangladesh openers in the first six overs. Wasim struck in the fifth over as he dismissed Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 10. In the next over, Sabbir Rahman fell for 14 after a simple caught and bowled dismissal off Haris Rauf.

Litton Das made 35 off 26 balls before Nawaz dismissed him and Mosaddek Hossain on successive deliveries in the 13th over. Afif Hossain made 25 off 23 balls while Yasir Ali top-scored for Bangladesh with 42 not out off 21 balls, hitting five fours and two sixes.

After dismissing Taskin Ahmed and Nasum Ahmed on the first two balls of the penultimate over, Wasim finished with impressive figures of 3/24 while Nawaz returned with figures of 2/25 in a collective bowling performance for Pakistan where all bowlers kept their economy rate below 10 despite a 20-run final over.Pakistan will be next seen in action when they take on hosts New Zealand tomorrow in the second match of the tri-series.

Jammu And Kashmir | Thousands queue up for ‘Agnipath’ recruitment rally in Samba

JAMMU, October 7: An Indian Army recruitment rally for Agniveers began in Jammu’s Samba district on Friday.
Thousands of candidates participated in the rally. Rohit Singh, a candidate for Agniveer recruitment said, “Those who prepared well have been selected. I want to serve the country, am thus opting for the Army.”
The Union Cabinet on June 14 approved a recruitment scheme for Indian youth to serve in the three services of the Armed Forces called ‘Agnipath’ and the youth selected under this scheme will be known as ‘Agniveers’.
The Agnipath scheme allows patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Armed Forces for a period of four years. The Agnipath scheme has been designed to enable a youthful profile of the Armed Forces.
‘Agnipath’ is a pan-India merit-based recruitment scheme for enrolling soldiers, airmen and sailors. The scheme provides an opportunity for youth to serve in the regular cadre of the armed forces. All those recruited under the ‘Agnipath’ scheme will be called ‘Agniveers’.
‘Agniveers’ will be enrolled for a service duration of 4 years including the training period. After four years, only 25 per cent of the Agniveers will be retained or re-enlisted in the regular cadre based on merit, willingness and medical fitness.
The Agnipath scheme has been brought to strengthen India’s security. The ‘Agniveers’ will be given a good pay package and an exit retirement package after four years of service. The first four years, served under a contract, are not likely to be considered for the fixation of the final pensionary benefits.
The other 75 per cent ‘Agniveers’ will be demobilised, with an exit or “Seva Nidhi” package of Rs Rs 11-12 lakh, partly funded by their monthly contributions, as well as skill certificates and bank loans for help in their second careers.
The Indian Army organised a two-month pre-training for youth residents of the villages located at the border areas of Uri subdivision along the Line of Control (LOC) in the Baramulla district of Kashmir for enrolment in the Army under the Agnipath scheme in September.
Earlier on August 14, a similar recruitment rally for the ‘Agniveers’ began in Haryana’s Hisar, which went on for a few days.
The first-ever examination for the recruitment in Indian Air Force through the new ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme began across the country on July 24 amid tight police security. This exam was conducted in many parts of the country including Delhi, Kanpur and Patna. (Agencies)

No assurance on transfers, Kashmiri Pandit staff disappointed as Amit Shah’s UT visit concludes

Jammu, October 7:

The Kashmiri Pandit and Dalit employees, who have been protesting in Jammu for nearly four months demanding their relocation out of Kashmir, have been left disheartened with the conclusion of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s three-day UT visit. They were expecting Shah to come up with some announcement regarding their transfer from the Valley to safe areas. They have urged the government to pay heed to their demands at the earliest.

The protests by Dalit and Kashmiri Pandit employees have been going on at different places in Jammu since militants began targeting employees, mostly non-Muslims, in the Valley.

It was the 128th day of protest by the Dalit employees who have been demonstrating under the banner of the All Jammu Based Reserve Category Employees Association, Kashmir. The employees from the community fled to Jammu after terrorists killed a Dalit teacher, Rajni Bala, in Kulgam on May 31 this year.

Similarly, Pandit employees had intensified their protest after a revenue clerk, Rahul Bhat, was gunned down in his office in Chadoora, Budgam, in May this year.

Amit Shah was in J&K from October 3 to 5 and addressed two rallies in Rajouri and Baramulla. The employees were expecting that he would announce their transfer to Jammu.

Naresh Bhagat, a Dalit employee, said, “Some officials of rural, forest and health departments are forcing the employees to resume their duties. They have also warned of strict action despite continuous targeted killing of minorities and policemen. The distressed employees are being further victimised by the officials.”

He said the employees believed that Amit Shah would pass directions to the administration for redressal of their concerns, but to no avail.

Another Dalit employee, who didn’t wish to be named, said Shah should have announced shifting of Hindu employees from Kashmir to Jammu. “It has become clear that frequent terror attacks on non-locals can’t be stopped by the security establishment as these have been going on for long. The only way is to relocate the protesting employees,” he said.

Kashmiri Pandit employees submitted a memorandum through the administration to Amit Shah regarding their transfer to Jammu.

Rubon Saproo, a Kashmiri Pandit employee, said a memorandum was submitted to the Home Minister. “We expect the government to take action on our demand soon. It is understood that the Home Minister was busy in other important matters of J&K during his visit,” said Saproo.

Demonstration goes on for months

The employees intensified their agitation after a clerk, Rahul Bhat, was gunned down in Budgam and a schoolteacher, Rajni Bala, was killed in Kulgam by militants in May this year.

Motive behind J&K DGP (Prisons) Hemant Kumar Lohia’s murder still unclear

Jammu, October:

Yasir Ahmed, accused of murdering DGP (Prisons) Hemant Kumar Lohia, has been sent on a seven-day police remand. At the same time, senior police officials remain tight-lipped about the reason behind the crime.

Yasir was arrested from fields in Kanachak area on Tuesday. He is being questioned by an SSP-level official. While the police have stated that Yasir had confessed his crime, the reason has not yet been disclosed.

DGP Dilbag Singh and ADGP Mukesh Singh didn’t respond to a query on the murder reason. Mukesh Singh has already informed that there has been no terror angle. Unconfirmed reports stated that Yasir was earlier working as a domestic help with a senior IAS official of J&K. Later, he began working for Rajiv Khajuria at whose house Lohia was murdered.

The police are also awaiting the forensic report on fingerprints on the broken glass bottle that was used to kill Lohia and other evidences in the room where the crime was committed.

The police had earlier informed that after having dinner on Monday evening, Lohia asked Yasir to apply balm on his foot that was swollen. Yasir locked the room from inside and killed Lohia.

Farooq issues 5-page ‘dossier’ on J&K development under National Conference

ational Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday rejected Union home minister Amit Shah’s charge on regional parties’ links with separatism in Jammu and Kashmir, saying the NC made sacrifices and many of its leaders and workers were killed by terrorists during the past 35 years.

“I do not want to be sidetracked by some of the other things that Shah said about guns and stones. The sacrifices of my colleagues over the last 35 years where scores of NC leaders and workers have been killed or injured by these very guns Amit Shah ji accused us of distributing is the only answer this accusation needs,” Abdullah said in a five-page statement.

At a rally on Wednesday, Shah had said there were two models available for the people — one of Prime Minister Modi which talks about development, peace and unity, and increases employment avenues, and the other one is the Gupkar model which let the Pulwama attack happen.

Abdullah issued a white paper on development undertaken in Jammu and Kashmir during the rule of “Abdullah and Sons” — as Shah referred the family in his speech at a rally in Baramulla district — to counter the allegations of corruption.Enumerating major steps taken by National Conference founder and his father Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as the head of the state, Farooq said this list is by no means complete but just a snapshot of some of the works done. Among other things, he listed the institution of single-line administration, abolition of landed estates and giving land to landless peasants, free education up to university level, establishment of the University of Jammu and Kashmir, adult education centres, Jabri schools for children and constitution of district development boards constituted in 1970s.The other steps taken by the NC government included setting up the Gujjar and Bakarwal advisory board, tertiary care hospital SKIMS, agricultural universities in Jammu and Srinagar, government colleges for women and 50% reservation for women in medical and dental colleges, he said.

The incumbent regime has and may again claim credit for all of this but propaganda and facts are two different things, he added.
