Pontevedra [Spain], October 19: India’s truncated squad at the U-23 World Wrestling Championship saw glory after India’s Greco-Roman wrestler Sajan Bhanwala bagged a historic Bronze in the 77kg division on Tuesday.
Sajan won India’s first Greco-Roman medal in U-23 Wrestling World Championship.The wrestler got the better of Ukraine’s Dmytro Vasetskyi in the repechage round to win the historic medal.
The Indian secured a 10-10 victory by points over his Ukrainian counterpart.
After securing a 3-0 win in the first round against Lithuanian Aistis Liaugminas, the athlete lost to Moldova’s Alexandrin Gutu in the pre-quarters 0-8.
However, Sajan got shy at the bronze medal via the repechage system after Gutu made it into the finals of the 77 kg round.
The ace athlete grabbed the opportunity with both hands to create history for India.
India suffered a major blow in the U-23 World Wrestling Championships after 21 members of the 30-member squad were denied visas to Spain by the Spanish embassy.
According to reports in the media, the reason for the denial of the visa is due to the intentions of the players to leave the territory before the expiry of the visa.
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had picked a 30-member squad for the World Championship but only nine were granted after the embassy of Spain denied visas to 21 of the wrestlers.
Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman Brijbhushan Sharan Singh termed the denial of visas to 21 members of the 30-strong Indian squad for the U-23 World Wrestling Championships by the Spanish Embassy as highly unfortunate.
“This has happened for the very first time. When a tournament is assigned to a country, there is a condition that they would not stop players from any country from coming, not even players from countries with which they have strained relations,” told the chairman to ANI.
“It is highly unfortunate that it has happened. Asian Championships happened two years back and back then we had highly tensed relations with Pakistan. Despite that, we gave visas, hotel and security to Pakistan players and dropped them safely at the Wagah border after the tournament,” he added.
Brijbhushan pointed out that nine out of 30 players have got their visas and the ones who have been denied a visa have supporting documents from the government and the organisers of the championships. (Agencies)

Srinagar, Oct 19: A Lashkar-e-Taiba “hybrid terrorist”, who was arrested following the death of two labourers in a grenade blast in Shopian, has been killed in an anti-terror operation in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.
“Based on disclosure of arrested hybrid terrorist and in continuous raids by police and security forces, another contact has been established between terrorists and SFs at Nowgam, Shopian, in which hybrid terrorist Imran Bashir Ganaie (was) killed by firing of another terrorist,” Kashmir Zone police said in a tweet on Wednesday.
It said incriminating material, including arms and ammunition, were seized from the encounter site.
“The search operation is still going on,” police said.
Two labourers from Kannauj area of Uttar Pradesh were killed in a grenade attack early Tuesday at Harmain in Shopian. Police arrested two people, including Ganaie, for their involvement in the incident.
“Hybrid terrorists” are unlisted radicalised people who carry out terror strikes and slip back into their routine lives often without leaving any trace. (Agencies)

J&K | LG Manoj Sinha condemns killing of migrant workers in Shopian
SRINAGAR, Oct 18: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha on Tuesday condemned the killing of two migrant workers in Shopian, saying that “words can’t adequately condemn the barbaric terror attack” while maintaining that the security forces have been given “full freedom to crush the terror ecosystem.”
“Words cannot adequately condemn today’s barbaric terror attack on Manish Kumar and Ram Sagar from Kannauj, UP. My deepest condolence to their families. One terrorist has been arrested & hunt is on for the others. Security apparatus has been directed to launch coordinated CT ops,” LG Sinha said, in a tweet.
He said the district administration Shopian has deputed senior officers to make arrangements for transportation of the mortal remains of the slain to their respective villages with full honours.
“We have intensified our efforts to crush terrorists and terror ecosystem and have given full freedom to the security forces. Terrorism is a curse for the civilised society. 2 Arrested In Connection With Killing Of Migrant Labourers: ADGP Kashmir
SRINAGAR, Oct 18: The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday said that accomplice of the main accused behind the grenade blast, leading to the death of two non-locals in Harmain Shopian, has been also arrested in the South Kashmir district.
Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar said that the main attacker was arrested during the night and later his associate has also been arrested within hours of the incident.
“Further investigation is going on,” he said while talking to reporters at the scene of the incident, adding, “The attacker was working for Lashker Commanders Danish and Abid.”
He said non locals remain a soft target as they don’t have security. “We will give befitting reply. Hardcore terrorists behind the attack will be neutralized soon,” he said. “We have carried raids at hideouts disclosed by the arrested hybrid terrorist and further investigation is going on.”
Two migrant labourers were killed in the grenade blast at their rented accommodation in Hermain area of district, police said on Tuesday and immediately claimed arrest of “hybrid” Lashker-e-Taiba behind it. (Agencies)
4 Pilgrims, 2 Pilots Killed As Helicopter Crashes Near Kedarnath
Kedarnath, Oct 18: Six people, including two pilots, were killed after a helicopter carrying the pilgrims crashed near Kedarnath in Uttarakhand today, officials have said.
The helicopter crashed near Garu Chatti, they said, adding that six bodies have been recovered so far and a rescue operation is underway.
The helicopter caught fire briefly after taking off from Kedarnath.
Yasin Malik Likely To Appear In-Person Before Special TADA Court In Jammu
NEW DELHI, Oct 18: Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) founder Yasin Malik, who is lodged in Tihar Prisons, is likely to appear before a Special TADA Court in-person for the cross-examination of persecution witnesses in two cases – the killing of four Indian Air Force (IAF) officers and the abduction of Rubaiyya Sayeed.
The IAF officials’ case will be listed before the Jammu special court on October 19, and the Rubaiyya Sayeed case on October 20.
Additional advocate general Monika Kohli, who is the public prosecutor in the two high-profile cases, said, “After Malik sought physical appearance before the Special TADA Court, it issued production warrants to Tihar Prison authorities directing them to produce him in court in connection to the two cases in Jammu.”
“Whether he is produced before court is yet to be seen. So far, we do not have any intimation from the prison authorities in Tihar. The court will start hearing cases from 10 am or 10.30 am,” added Kohli.
On September 21, a special TADA Court had issued production warrants to ensure physical presence of Malik before the court on October 19 and 20 to cross-examine prosecution witnesses and Rubaiyya Sayeed.
56-year-old Sayeed, who had been kidnapped in December 1989 to secure the release of five militants, had identified Malik and three others in the abduction case. However, on August 23, a special TADA Court had issued bailable warrants against Sayeed after she had failed to appear before court in-person. (Agencies)
IED Case | SIU Conducts Searches at Multiple Locations In J&K”s Pulwama
SRINAGAR, Oct 18: Special Investigation Unit of J&K on Tuesday morning conducted raids at multiple locations regarding IED case in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
A senior Police officer told that SIU ( Which is Investigation Agency of Police on District Level) is conducting raids in Jandwal, Armulla, Nilloraand Bandzoo villages of Pulwama regarding recovery of 30 KG IED in August.
The officer further stated that already few people have been arrested earlier in connection with this case.
It’s pertinent to mention that An IED weighing approx. 25 to 30 Kgs was recovered near Tahab Crossing on Circular road in Pulwama by Police and Security Forces in August. (Agencies)
PM Modi to address 90th Interpol General Assembly today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the 90th Interpol General Assembly today. The Interpol General Assembly was last held in 1997. PM Modi will address at around 1:45 pm in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the 90th General Assembly of Interpol will be held from October 18 to 21.
The meeting will be attended by delegations from 195 Interpol member countries comprising Ministers, Police Chiefs of countries, Heads of National Central Bureaus and Senior police officers. The General Assembly is Interpol’s supreme governing body and meets annually to take key decisions related to its functioning.
Union Home Minister, Interpol President Ahmed Naser Al Raisi and Secretary General Jurgen Stock, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director will also be present on the occasion.
“The Interpol General Assembly meeting is taking place in India after a gap of about 25 years – it was last held in 1997. India’s proposal to host the Interpol General Assembly in 2022 at New Delhi coinciding with celebrations for the 75th year of India’s independence was accepted by the General Assembly with an overwhelming majority,” the PMO said in a statement.
Targeting gangs-terror nexus: NIA raids multiple places in northern India
New Delhi, October 18: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on early Tuesday carried out searches at multiple locations in various states across northern India in an ongoing case against gangs and their nexus with terror groups, sources said.
The raids were conducted in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to dismantle and disrupt the emerging nexus between terrorists, gangsters, drug smugglers and traffickers based in India and abroad.
Separate teams of NIA in coordination with state police forces conducted these raids simultaneously at certain locations of the gangsters based on some specific inputs, a source privy to the development said.
On September 12, the NIA had conducted similar searches at 50 locations in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and NCR region.
The NIA crackdown followed the launch of investigations against this nexus by the anti-terror agency after the re-registration of two cases, earlier registered by Delhi Police, on August 26 this year. A few of the most desperate gang leaders and their associates based in India and abroad, who are spearheading and carrying out such terror and criminal activities were identified and booked.
“The recent sensational crimes and extortion calls by criminal syndicates and gangsters to businessmen, professionals including doctors etc., had created a widespread scare among the people,” the NIA had said earlier.
“These gangs were using cyber-space to publicise these crimes to create terror among the public at large.”
The NIA investigations also revealed that such criminal acts were not isolated local incidents but there was a deep-rooted conspiracy amongst terrorists, gangsters and drug smuggling cartels and networks, who were operating from both within and outside the country.
“Many gang leaders and members had fled from India and were now operating from foreign countries, including Pakistan, Canada, Malaysia and Australia,” said the NIA when it first time carried out a mega raid against such gangs.
Ongoing probes by the NIA in cases being investigated by the Agency, such as the killing of Shaurya Chakra Awardee Comrade Balwinder Singh in Punjab also revealed that most of these conspiracies were being hatched from inside Jails of different States and were being executed by organized network of operatives based in abroad, the NIA has said
“Preliminary Investigations have revealed that these gangs were carrying out targeted killings, including those of prominent people, to terrorise the general public to extort money for running and promoting their criminal syndicates and activities. These gangs were also raising funds to carry out such criminal activities through smuggling of drugs and weapons.”
In raids conducted last month to dismantle these transnational terror and crime networks, the NIA had conducted searches at 50 locations in Fazilka, Fairdkot, Mukhtsar Sahab, Moga, Taran Taaran, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Mohali Districts of Punjab, East Gurugram, Bhiwani, Yamuna Nagar, Sonepat and Jhajjar districts of Haryana, Hanumangarh and Ganganagar districts of Rajasthan and Dwarka, Outer North, North West, North East and Shahdara Districts of Delhi/ NCR.
The NIA then searched the premises of Goldy Brar (Canada), Lawrence Bishnoi, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, Varinder Pratap alias Kala Rana, Kala Jathedi, Vikram Brar, Gaurav Patyal alias Lucky Patyal (who was earlier arrested in Armenia), Neeraj Bawana, Koushal Chaudhary, Tillu Tajpuria, Amit Dagar, Deepak Kumar alias Tinu, Sandeep alias Bandar, Umesh alias Kala, Irfan alias Cheenu Pahalwan, Ashim alias Hashim Baba, Sachin Bhanja and their associates.
During the searches then, the NIA seized six Pistols, one revolver, one shotgun along with ammunition. Besides, drugs, cash, incriminating documents, digital devices, details of benami property and threat letters were also seized by the NIA in the operation conducted last month. (Agencies)
