Varsha Gaikwad Criticizes Congress State Leadership for Missing Opportunity to Secure Better Deal for LS Seats in Mumbai
Mumbai, Apr 11 ; Mumbai Congress President Varsha Gaikwad expressed disappointment on Thursday over the seat-sharing arrangement among the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) allies for the Lok Sabha polls, suggesting that the party’s Maharashtra leadership should have pushed for equal distribution of seats among the allies to secure a better deal for Mumbai.
Under the announced seat-sharing deal, the Congress received two Lok Sabha seats out of the six in Mumbai, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) secured four seats.
Gaikwad, while addressing reporters, stated, “Previously, Congress contested five seats in Mumbai, leaving only Mumbai North-East to the undivided Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). So, this time, we were advocating for equal seat-sharing.”
Although Gaikwad refrained from directly expressing her discontent over the seat allocation, she stressed the importance of addressing the sentiments of the party cadre. She emphasized her consistent efforts to convey the demand for equal seat-sharing to the state and central leadership.
Gaikwad highlighted the party’s strong presence in constituencies like Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai North-West, and Mumbai North-Central, suggesting that the Congress should have been allocated these seats based on its performance and candidate merit.
While acknowledging the organizational strength of the party in Mumbai, Gaikwad suggested that the state leadership could have negotiated a better deal for the Congress. She expressed her hope for a reconsideration of seat allocation, especially regarding the Mumbai North seat.
Responding to a query about a demand made by Sena (UBT) leader Vinod Ghosalkar regarding the Mumbai North seat, Gaikwad mentioned the possibility of swapping seats, subject to leadership decisions.
The Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra are scheduled to be held in five phases from April 19 to May 20.

Atishi Claims ED Failed to Establish Money Trail Against Any AAP Leader Despite Multiple Raids
New Delhi, Mar 23 : The ED has not been able to establish a money trail against any AAP leader despite multiple raids, arrests and two year-long investigations in the alleged excise policy scam, Delhi Minister Atishi claimed on Saturday.
The AAP leader also said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday merely based on the statement of one Sharad P Reddy.
Reddy, of Aurobindo Pharma, was arrested by the ED in November in connection with the excise policy case. He gave crores of rupees to the BJP through electoral bonds, she claimed.
A local court on Friday remanded Kejriwal in ED custody till March 28 “for his detailed and sustained interrogation” regarding his role in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.
Atishi also challenged the ED to file a case against the BJP, saying the money trail of the so-called excise policy scam leads to the saffron party.
The Delhi minister alleged that the BJP received “proceeds of crime” in its bank accounts and said the central agency should arrest the saffron party’s chief JP Nadda in the matter. -

UK Leadership Addresses Extremism Amid Political Turmoil
New Delhi, March 02, 2024: In an address from Downing Street, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has issued a stark warning against extremists seeking to undermine the United Kingdom’s foundational principles of a multi-faith democracy.
Sunak’s speech, particularly delivered from a lectern outside No. 10—a setting traditionally reserved for major declarations—emphasized the existential threat posed by both Islamist and far-right extremists. Labelling them as “two sides of the same extremist coin,” the Prime Minister accused these groups of harbouring a deep-seated hatred for Britain, a sentiment that undermines the nation’s democratic fabric.
The backdrop of Sunak’s address is a landscape of heightened tension and division, not only within the political arena but also among the public. This tension has been further exacerbated by ongoing protests related to the Israel-Gaza conflict, which Sunak highlighted as a point of concern.
The protests, according to the Prime Minister, have at times descended into intimidation and violence, threatening the country’s peace and security.
While Sunak’s speech was rich in rhetoric against extremism, it was thin on specific policy announcements. This approach underscores a strategic choice to emphasize solidarity and determination against threats to national unity, rather than immediately unveiling new legislative measures.
The timing of Sunak’s address follows a controversial by-election in Rochdale, where the victory of George Galloway—a candidate criticized by Sunak for dismissing the significance of recent events in Israel—prompted the Prime Minister to denounce the outcome as “beyond alarming publicly.”
This incident, among others, highlights the charged atmosphere of UK politics, where issues of security, democracy, and extremism intersect with domestic and international concerns.
In his speech, Sunak also took a broader stance against all forms of hatred, including antisemitism and anti-Muslim sentiments, while advocating for a balanced approach to handling protests. He promised support for law enforcement in managing demonstrations and announced plans for a new robust framework to address these challenges.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to bolstering the Prevent program, a key counter-terrorism initiative, and called on universities and other institutions to actively combat extremist activities.
The political reaction to Sunak’s speech has been mixed, with opposition leaders acknowledging the importance of unity and condemnation of intimidation but also critiquing the Conservative Party’s historical contributions to division.
The recent events and Sunak’s subsequent address highlight the complex landscape of UK politics, where the balance between freedom and security, unity and division, remains a central challenge.
As the country navigates through these tumultuous times, the leadership’s ability to confront extremism while preserving the principles of democracy and inclusivity will be closely watched both domestically and internationally.
