Fresh landslide blocks Jammu-Srinagar National Highway; Doda bridge closed for safety inspection

A fresh landslide on Monday blocked the 250-km Jammu–Srinagar National Highway in the Udhampur district, while the main bridge in the Doda district was temporarily closed to vehicular movement after suspected cracks triggered a safety inspection, officials said.

A massive landslide struck the strategic Jammu–Srinagar National Highway at Dewal in the Udhampur district early Monday, forcing authorities to suspend vehicular traffic from both directions, a traffic department official said.

He said the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) had deployed men and machinery to clear the debris and restore traffic at the earliest.

“Commuters are advised to avoid travelling on the highway until it is declared safe and reopened for traffic, as there is a risk of further landslides and shooting stones. People are also urged not to pay heed to rumours and to rely only on updates issued through the Traffic Police’s official social media handles for the latest road status,” the spokesman said.

However, officials said a fresh batch of 3,823 Amarnath pilgrims, travelling in a 140-vehicle convoy to the Baltal base camp under tight security, was allowed to cross the affected stretch after authorities restored one-way traffic on the highway.

Officials said normal traffic would resume once the second tube becomes operational within the next few hours. They said the temporary suspension of vehicular traffic was intended to enable the restoration agency to carry out the work swiftly and without any disruption.

Traffic on the highway had resumed on Sunday after remaining suspended for three days due to multiple landslides and shooting stones triggered by heavy rainfall. However, following the passage of the Amarnath Yatra convoy, vehicular movement was once again suspended for almost the entire day to facilitate landslide clearance operations in the Gangroo area along the Ramban–Banihal stretch.

Authorities closed the Pul Doda bridge late Sunday night after reports of visible cracks raised safety concerns.

Executive Engineer, Public Works Department (PWD), Anil Mehra said an inspection by engineers found that the markings were not structural cracks but were likely caused by concrete overlap at shuttering joints during construction.

“There were speculations that cracks had developed on the bridge (following recent heavy rainfall). As a precautionary measure and from a safety point of view, we closed it to vehicular traffic during the night. After a detailed inspection this (Monday) morning, our initial assessment indicates that these are not structural cracks,” he said.

He said an expert team from Design Inspection and Quality Control had also been called in to independently assess the bridge and conduct quality checks to ensure there were no structural defects.

“Once the bridge is certified as safe, it will be reopened for vehicular traffic. At present, traffic has been diverted through the alternate Ganpat bridge. If the expert team identifies any defect, it will be rectified immediately before the bridge is reopened,” he said.

‘System downright murderous against students”: Rahul Gandhi steps up offensive against govt over police action on students

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Monday launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, accusing the administration of being “murderous” towards the student community.

Taking to social media platform X, the Congress leader alleged that the government is using extreme force, including AK-47s and pellet guns, to suppress student voices across various states.

    Capture

“The entire system is downright murderous against students. News is coming in that AK-47 bullets have been fired at protesting students in Bihar, and hundreds of students have been arrested with FIRs being filed against them,” Gandhi said in his post.

Questioning the Prime Minister over previous assurances regarding the treatment of student protesters, the Leader of Opposition asked, “Mr. Modi, where did your promise go that no FIRs would be filed against students and they would be released? Instead, deadly attacks and brutality are being unleashed on them.”

Gandhi further highlighted what he described as a nationwide pattern of state-led crackdowns on students. “In Delhi, pellet guns were fired at students, and in Bihar, AK-47s. Whether it’s Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, or Delhi the pattern is the same everywhere. I’ve said it before: this government is dishonest. Real reform is beyond their capability. They’ll backtrack on their words and use every trick in the book to suppress students’ voices,” he added.

Concluding his statement, the Congress leader demanded an unconditional apology from the Prime Minister and called for accountability for the security forces involved.

“Mr. Modi, apologize to the country’s students. And take action against those who attacked and crushed the students not against the students themselves,” Gandhi stated.

“Toh fayda kya hua?” Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slams reports of FIR on students in states; says new exam bill ‘pointless’

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday questioned the purpose of the new anti-paper leak bill if students are allegedly still being targeted with FIRs.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, the Congress General Secretary mentioned receiving unverified reports of continued police action against students in Bihar and West Bengal following the NEET and CBSE examination protests.

“I have heard that FIRs are still being filed against students in Bihar and Bengal. I have heard this, it’s not verified yet. So, I mean… what’s the point then?” Gandhi remarked.

  • SKUAST-K becomes Kashmir’s first University to hold fully Paperless PG Semester Exam

SKUAST-K becomes Kashmir’s first University to hold fully Paperless PG Semester Exam

SRINAGAR, JULY 25: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has become the first university in the Kashmir Valley to conduct a completely paperless postgraduate semester examination, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of higher education in the region.

On July 25, the University successfully conducted a tablet-based digital examination for 150 postgraduate students enrolled in the course “Statistical Methods for Applied Sciences”, replacing the conventional pen-and-paper examination system with a secure digital platform.

The initiative was envisioned by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, as part of the University’s broader mission to modernize academic administration through technology-driven, sustainable and student-centric practices. The transition reflects SKUAST-K’s commitment to creating a future-ready academic ecosystem that aligns with global standards in digital education.

The implementation was coordinated under the supervision of Prof. K. N. Qaisar, Controller of Examinations; Prof. Raihana Habib Kanth, Dean, Faculty of Horticulture; and Prof. Imran Khan, Head, Division of Agricultural Statistics, who ensured that the examination was conducted in accordance with prescribed academic standards and robust data security protocols.

The examination was monitored on-site by Dr. Aziz Mujtaba Aezum, Dr. M. Iqbal Jeelani and Dr. Immad A. Shah, who managed real-time classroom operations, technical support and student facilitation to ensure a seamless examination experience.

Prof. Ganai described the successful conduct of the examination as a landmark achievement in the University’s digital transformation journey. He said the initiative demonstrates SKUAST-K’s resolve to adopt innovative technologies that enhance academic quality while promoting sustainability and operational efficiency.

“This transition is not merely about replacing paper with digital devices. It is about preparing our students for a technology-driven future while making academic processes more transparent, efficient and environmentally responsible,” he said.

The University had earlier introduced the paperless examination system for undergraduate end-term examinations. Its successful expansion to the postgraduate level marks another major step towards fully digitising the University’s evaluation system.

The digital examination platform offers several advantages over conventional examinations. It significantly reduces paper consumption, printing requirements and physical storage, contributing to environmental sustainability. The system also streamlines examination logistics through secure digital distribution of question papers, encrypted submission of answer scripts and faster evaluation, enabling quicker declaration of results.

To uphold examination integrity, the platform operates in a secure locked environment that prevents access to external resources during the examination. Digital audit trails, including automated timestamps and activity logs, further strengthen transparency and accountability throughout the assessment process.

The initiative also familiarises students with computer-based assessments, helping them build digital confidence and preparing them for national competitive examinations such as ICAR-NET, GATE, CSIR-UGC NET and Civil Services, which are conducted through computer-based testing. The platform additionally supports accessibility through features such as adjustable font sizes and enhanced screen visibility.

The successful conduct of the 150-candidate postgraduate examination establishes a scalable model for digital assessments in higher education. SKUAST-K plans to gradually extend the paperless examination system across all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, reinforcing its position as a leader in technology-enabled agricultural education and academic innovation.
