Jammu Hits Season High with Scorching 44.8°C Temperature

Jammu, May 29: The mercury continued its upward trend across the district, with Jammu city recording the season’s highest temperature at 44.8 degrees Celsius, nearly 5.7 degrees above the average, according to the Meteorological Department on Wednesday. The region has been experiencing an extreme heatwave for the past week, with temperatures consistently rising above 40 degrees Celsius since May 16, MeT department officials reported.

Wednesday’s day temperature in Jammu city was notably higher, nearly 5.7 degrees above the seasonal average and 5 degrees higher than Tuesday’s 39.3 degrees Celsius. Other regions also recorded significant temperatures, with Katra, the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, reaching 40 degrees Celsius, and Leh city clocking in at 21 degrees Celsius.

Kathua, known as the gateway to Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a scorching 46.1 degrees Celsius, followed by Samba at 44.7 degrees Celsius, Udhampur at 42 degrees Celsius, and Reasi at 41.7 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Srinagar’s maximum daytime temperature was reported at 32.6 degrees Celsius.

In response to the heatwave, the district administration deployed water tankers to sprinkle water jets on the roads for the second consecutive day. Police tankers have also joined the initiative. Additionally, several organizations have set up stalls providing water and lemon water to people in various areas of Jammu city to help combat the extreme heat.
